Manoa has been our weekend go to, so we've been discovering new places to eat in the area. We tried Serg's today and it was pretty good. We got so much stuff. I think my husband purposely orders a lot during lunch because that's the meal I pay for.... So we got tacos, enchilada plate, quesadilla, carne asada fries, and a horchata. We did it to go because be had to hurry home for my daughter's nap. Even after coming home, the food still looked so yummy. I had the enchiladas with red sauce on it. Red sauce is the more milder sauce. Green is the more spicy sauce. The enchiladas was okay. I'm not really a fan of their red sauce, it was different from other places I have tried before. My most favorite was the carne asada fries. It had everything on there: avocado, tomatoes, and sour cream. It tasted really good. I'm glad that we got to pick up lunch from here. Still just as good if not better than I remember it to be! Friday night, long lines, full seating area. I wasn't surprised. We didn't have to wait as long as we thought to order and just as we finished ordering a table opened up. Perfect timing. We ordered chips & salsa, enchiladas with beef, and a chimichanga. The wait for food was not instant, we already knew that, so be prepared to wait. There were tons of to go orders and grubhub orders ahead of us. About 20 minutes later our names were called. Chips were nice and light. Super thin and crispy and came with a side of mild salsa. The mild salsa was so smokey and tomato sauce like. So yum and more complex than I remember it being. Such a good appetizer. I miss the salsa bar they used to have and hope they bring it back so I can get a mixture of salsas. The chimichanga was perfectly fried, not greasy, and filled with so many things including rice, beans, and we opted for chicken. It came with a side of pico de gallo and guacamole over shredded cabbage. Definition delicious. Now for the enchiladas. Amazing! Saucy and again, very tomatoey. The red sauce was more like an italian tomato sauce so that threw me off a bit, but still good. I absolutely loved the rice and black refried beans. It's been years since I patronized this place and definitely not during Covid. My brother and I came on a whim on a Sunday morning. I was hoping for breakfast but we got there 15 minutes late and they said breakfast was over. I always have their nachos but I wanted something different today and therefore ordered the breaded fish tacos. I was excited to try them based on reviews but was sadly disappointed as the fish was cold. Maybe they were frozen prior I am not sure. I should've gone on taco Tuesday as I could've saved a few dollars. The coleslaw was overly wet and sweet. My brother had the beef burrito and was very happy with it considering he is a picky eater. We are both not fans of black beans but I tried his and they were extremely tasty so I finished them off for him. They give you a picture of water if you are eating there which was very much appreciated as we both drink a lot of water. Alright so since my last review we've come here many a times without issue. Husband and I LOVE Mexican food and this has become one of our go tos again, especially when we want a variety of items (e.g., not just tacos, not just a burrito). The sope has been good, crispy, not odd shaped or smashed. Tacos are pretty consistent and I've grown to love the Chile verde and that has been added to our routine order. Chimichanga could be more crispy but nothin air fryer can't fix. The chimichanga and burrito are pretty huge portions which is great for planning leftovers. We were very excited when looking at the menu ordering our food but the excitement just went downhill once we started eating...Altogether we have ordered about 2 dozens of tacos ($2 each and $3 for specialty tacos) with churros and grilled corn. The wait for ok, about 10 to 15 minutes. They packed 12 tacos on one plate and they were all mixed together. So I wasn't exactly sure what I was eating besides the fish and the lengua (tongue). The lengua was very very delicious but everything else was just okay. The fish was too soggy. The others were too salty. Churros tasted stale. Corn was salty and cheese on top was too much. I like the vibe of this place. Outdoor seating with some picnic tables. Actually a very cute place. So I think I'll give it another chance and try other dishes next time. read more

The music was bold and inviting, the staff were very friendly and diligent. However, the Mexico City Style Al Pastor Taco I got was a dealbreaker for me. After eating some pieces of the not-so-high-quality Al pastor meat, which tasted better with the great cilantro and lime that accompanied it, I found that the taco was essentially an inflatable swimming pool holding maybe half a cup of a red-colored oil. After seeing this and fearing for my diet and health, I tried a few more bites of the taco and called it quits. After throwing away most of the taco, I've probably consumed a few tablespoons of the straight red-colored oil and it's not making me nauseous, but it's not something I'd return to if I had a choice. I was in college at the time, but my family lived nearby so during visits home I would stop in for lunch. I was so stoked to have a great Mexican spot in Manoa, and the food was absolutely delicious. So imagine my surprise when I finally moved home and was scouting Mexican food when I noticed Serg's rating on Yelp was 3.5 stars. If my memory served me well, the food deserved at least a 4, possibly a 5, star rating. What gives? After a few visits, I quickly understood the duality of Serg's. Let's start with the food. I've only ever ordered their house specialty, the flauta - a fried tortilla stuffed with a meat of your choice, smothered with salsa and crema, and accompanied with beans and rice. My god. It hits every time. Especially if you can eat it immediately when the tortilla is still crispy. Mmmm. Sooo good. And the beans and rice are some of the best I've had. Incredibly flavorful. I find myself craving just the beans and rice sometimes. Crazy. Today I actually got adventurous and tried the chimichanga. Also a banger. The food here is great. No question about that. But the service? Ooof. Big ooof. My experiences have scared me away from ever trying to eat here on Taco Tuesday. I can't imagine the shitshow. For one, their online portal for ordering is super outdated. It doesn't provide any updates on the status of your order, so you kind of have to guess when its ready. No notifications. Nothing. It's terrible. Second, they just aren't proficient on order management/operations. They very often have no idea how long an order will take to be ready. I've been quoted 20 mins only to have to wait almost an hour. I've received the wrong order. And sometimes when you ask for an update on your order they really just seem not to have any idea what the status may be. And just today, I tried to call in my order and they placed me on hold for five minutes. Finally, I hung up and dialed back, and they immediately picked up. What took me so long to eat at this place I have no idea. Wonderful little spot in Manoa. It looks like this place was a old gas station. The staff was super friendly and so knowledgeable about the menu. On advice, we ordered the Flautas. A flaky,crispy fried flour cylinder filled with pork, topped with avocado salsa and queso Fresca, chopped round onions and cilantro. It's also served with black beans and Mexican rice. Stumbled upon Serg's during a venture to Off the Hook. Hubs doesn't care for poke so when we saw a lunch line at Serg's we got naturally curious! I looked up their menu and noticed al pastor. Now hubs and I are absolutely OBSESSED with a particular taco truck parked off of Lake Merritt in Oakland California. And it's their Al Pastor that had us literally standing in long arse lines at 3am on many occasions! Well, Serg's totally hits that al pastor craving!! We've been here twice so far and have tried all of the following in various meats. They're all so absolutely delicious!! Located in an old gas station with no frills and slightly aggressive birds, this place is a solid option for whatever you're craving. It's never really the first place that comes to our mind when deciding on where to go, but when we end up here, Serg's really delivers on all points: non-frustrating parking, ample outdoor seating, friendly service, good value and great food. Sure, it may not stack up to some of the legendary trucks and restaurants in California and beyond, but it satisfies my taco cravings without pretense or an unnecessary hipster spin on the classics. What I love is that they have a broad menu, so you're sure to find whatever you're in the mood to eat. Most recently, we tried going to Morning Glass for breakfast and coffee but the line of students and tourists was ridiculous. The place was completely overrun. I thought I'd seen Serg's order window open on the way, so I told my wife we should go back. We pulled up right at 10 am when they opened and found that they have breakfast on the weekend! I was super-pumped as I'd been craving chilaquiles for days. My wife isn't a big breakfast person, and the gal there let us know the whole entire menu was available. Perfect. So, I ordered the chilaquiles with carne asada. My wife got a taco, taquitos, and an order of potato tacos for us to share. Man, everything hit the spot! Again, nothing groundbreaking here. Just a big plate of chips smothered in meat and a spicy chile verde, along with onions, cilantro and crema. Serious comfort food. Tacos de papas were simple and perfectly greasy, each bite we dipped in a different salsa to create a delicious variety of heat and flavor. When we arrived, it was very easy to find parking as this spot has their own lot. There is no indoor seating as this is an outdoor experience type of deal. We ordered nachos, tacos, flautas, rice, and beans. The food was good for Hawaii (my bias is that I think California has the best Mexican food). The guacamole was tasty but could've used a hint more salt and pepper. Be careful when ordering the Flautas plate because we ordered 4 plates, and it was way too much food. I feel like it's a good sign of how good a place is by how long the line is. The line got very long. Thankfully, we came before that but we still waiting a little while. We also got lucky and got a parking stall. There is very limited parking so I would suggest looking on the street somewhere. There is a window to order from and then a few tables right in front. Great for outdoor seating right now. However, space is limited. People seem to came and go in a timely manner though. The flautas were suggested to me but I love enchiladas and had to try. I got shredded beef with the green sauce. They were delicious. My boyfriend got the $2 tacos since it was taco Tuesday. He got carne asada, carnitas, and fish. They were all really tasty too. They're very small though and he was still hungry after 6. We didn't want to stand in line again but would have ordered more if we didn't have to wait. So I would suggest ordering more right away. My go-to is the Chili Rellenos & Flauta. (Mouth salivating thinking about it.) They get super busy so I suggest calling ahead of time and placing your order. Usually a 30 minute wait, so call it in & drive into Mānoa.. Should be perfect timing for pick up. They also have some outside dining if you decide to eat it right there. This place could be dynamite. They just don't have it together from front of house to back of house. Again it could have the night we went. It took 1hr to get a taco salad, queso/chips, and two tacos. I've been told their food truck is faster. The tacos were ice cold, good seasoning but definitely had been sitting a while. The taco salad was good. The beef was tender. The queso was decent and I was glad I ordered it because of how bland the tacos were. I would also check your order as the menu states certain toppings, if they don't have them they just serve you the protein in a corn tortilla. Why wait until Tuesday when you can get a taco today? After seeing mouthwatering photos of Mexican cuisine from several SoCal Yelp Friends over the past months, I've been craving tacos or burritos. But, it was fellow local Elite Kelly G's review and photos for Serg's Mexican Kitchen, that pushed me until I just couldn't stand it any longer. In October, my tastebuds' rumblings caused me to bookmark Serg's Mexican Kitchen when I watched a local news story about Serg's Mexican Kitchen. Chef Sergio Arellano had celebrated 11 years at this Mānoa location after moving to Hawai'i to be closer to family. His many years of culinary experiences and time-honored family recipes from Mexico City have kept this restaurant running. Located in a former gasoline station, you can see where the gasoline pumps were by the raised concrete islands, drive-through lanes, and the flat roof canopy weathered by the rainy Mānoa Valley weather. The drive-through lanes were replaced by large communal dining tables and picnic-style benches. But, during COVID-19, all of the seating or dining area options have been removed and the festive decorations have deteriorated to making it look like a ghost town. Ah, but, take-out is available so, I knew that our dine would either be in our car or home or somewhere scenic. Walking up to the order window, we were greeted immediately by a female worker. It took us a few minutes to decide on our choices, but she answered our questions regarding side dishes that we saw on the menu. FOOD: -Mexico City-Style Tacos: I ordered the tripas (small beef intestine), lengua (beef tongue), and carnitas (Mexican slow-cooked pulled pork) tacos. Each taco was served on a grilled 5" white corn tortilla and topped simply with cilantro and onion. The tripas were clean-flavored, tender, and had a pan-fried crispness and brown. Each bite into the tripas yielded a tender chewiness. I added the medium spice level salsa to give this taco a flavor kick and felt that the chilis enhanced the beef flavor. $3.95 + $1.00 (specialty meat) My next taco to bite into was the lengua (beef tongue). The lengua was luscious and melted in my mouth tender. I tasted garlic, onion, bay leaf, and a bit of pepper that was probably used in its cooking liquid. Because the lengua was served in a taco, the meat was chopped and not sliced. I meant to ask for salsa verde but got distracted, so I just used a bit of the salsa that we got. $3.95 + $1.00 (specialty meat) The last taco on my plate to chomp into was the carnitas. This taco seemed to be filled with more meat than the other two even though I paid an extra $1.00 for it. The carnitas was juicy and tender...it hit my porkaholic taste buds. $3.95 -Pork Carnitas: House Specialty plate included beans, rice, pico de gallo, and two corn tortillas. The pork shoulder was tender and slow-cooked with Chef Arellano's special seasoning(s). My husband liked it but to be honest, he wasn't paying attention and was thinking he was getting beef. Tsk... IDK, I think his selective hearing got in the way as I kept telling him it's PORK and he could take a bite of my carnitas taco! $13.95 Service was welcoming and friendly but, we were surprised when we paid for our order to be charged the extra $1 for tripas and lengua. Nowhere on the menu posted did we see that charge AND both items were listed on the taco menu at $3.95. The counter girl didn't mention it either as the charges came upon our receipt. I was about to question it but noticed their Taco Tuesday menu where that additional charge was noted. Sheesh... Anyway, the food was good albeit pricy compared to what I could get in SoCal or at another local Mexican restaurant. Serg's Mexican Kitchen has been a local favorite for consistent great tasting Mexican creations here in the Manoa Valley for as long as I can remember, as a former resident of Manoa. There has been a few try's of expanding their menu with a try at pizza and wings but their authentic Mexican delights have prevailed over everything else. Tonight I was cruising through the area and my craving for some fish tacos and a plate of Chipotle Garlic Shrimp had me dialed in for dinner! The sight of a line formed under their covered outdoor patio reaffirmed that my Serg's urges were justified! I had drove by on Tuesday and realized they still have a Two Dollar Taco Tuesday Special that brings out the college town students as well as the locals. My 5 minute wait to order tonight lead to a 20-30 minute wait after ordering, but was well worth it. I must admit seeing their huge patio without the large picnic-style bench tables due to the pandemic was a bit strange. Masks required and social distancing is the norm. Thank goodness they still have simple but clean bathrooms available on the right side of the building just past the neon "OPEN" sign. I really enjoyed my Garlic Chipotle Shrimp Plate that I ordered (minus rice) add extra lettuce & pico de Gallo. Note: The shrimp are deveined slow cooked with shell on, in a chunky garlicky chipotle house made sauce that took my tastebuds into delight mode. I also ordered 2 grilled fish tacos that were delicious. Their fish tacos are served on corn tortillas and smothered with a Mexican slaw that tastes great but it's sloppy eating. I made my fish taco taste even better by adding a few of my Garlic Chipotle Shrimps inside my Fish Tacos! I usually get a house made flan for dessert but had to pass this visit. A great option for Mexican food! With the limited options available on Oahu it's hard to find a good Mexican restaurant. Serg's has some pretty solid Mexican food. I personally really enjoy the flauta. It's one 12 inch flauta filled with your choice of meat, and served with rice and beans on the side. Everything we've tried so far has been pretty good. They appear to be thriving despite COVID. I'm so glad they are doing well! It looks like they are currently doing takeout only because there are no tables setup, but there is still usually a line whenever we come. I would recommend placing a phone order and picking it up. They are usually super quick, so it's a good option when you want to eat something delicious and fairly quick. The only issue is that the parking is very limited so you might have a hard time finding a space. Also just as a side note, I wish they had pozole! I am on the hunt for a great pozole. They do have menudo but I am not a fan of tripe so that is not for me. Anyway, I will definitely be back several more times to continue to try more of the menu! read more

Serg's has been in Manoa for a while, but I never got around to trying it until now. They have a great taco tuesday special, offering $2 tacos! In Hawaii, that is probably one of the cheapest deals you can get for tacos. I love Mexican street tacos and find it hard to go to an affordable, tasty place in Hawaii. Located in the same lot as the old Boston's Pizza in Manoa, Serg's has parking on both sides of the lot. When we got there, it was crowded so we parked across the street in the residential area. People do come and go out of the lot so it is possible to get parking fairly easily though. The line was pretty long to order so I would recommend calling in a phone order. I noticed that a lot of people who ordered in line had to wait a bit, but phone order customers could just swing by and pick up. Since the lot is pretty big and open air, its easy to social distance and stay apart from others. Although it was crowded, I felt better that we were all outside. Now onto the tacos! I tried the carne asada, carnita, and fish taco. We also ordered a side of chips and pico, extra guac, birria consome, a burrito, and Gorditos, a two layer tortilla taco with beans in between the two tortillas. Street tacos are my absolute favorite. I thought the flavor was great and they gave a good portion of meat per taco. I don't like mayo, so the fish one wasn't as good in my opinion as it came with a slaw made with a lot of mayo. The other two were really tasty though and I could've eaten a bunch more! You can choose your salsa, mild, medium or hot, we chose medium but it is a bit thicker and reminded me of pasta sauce. I wasn't a big fan of their salsa. Our other dishes were also great - the gorditas are a new item. The taco is HUGE and stuffed with a lot of meat and other toppings. It was really filling, but I'm not sure that I would order again. I would rather have 3 more street tacos. If you're looking for a cheap, filling meal though, I would go with it. The birria consome was only $1.50 so we also decided to try that. Birria tacos have been blowing up in Hawaii. Unfortunately they did not have Birria tacos, but we drizzled some sauce over our gordita to try. The broth was rich and flavorful. If it wasn't for the food and decent prices I'd never go here. Service is horrendous- an hour wait for a flauta and an order of taquitos. My fiance went to ask the girl if our order was ready 40 mins into our wait and she was on the phone taking a personal call (he knows this cuz she rolled her eyes and hung up when he came up) and just scoffed "I didn't call your order yet". She was calling so many numbers after ours too. His food tasted like it had been sitting out for a long time, the flauta was super soggy and the crema and beans were hard and dry. Don't listen to what the other reviews say. No indoor seating? No problem--it's Hawaii. it's pouring rain? Doesn't matter--go there anyways. It was so hard for us to find a solid Mexican food place while we were here, so when we found this gem, we didn't want to let it go. We went three days in a row with no regrets. All of the food we tried (California burrito, flautas, and tacos) were all solid. The deep fried Oreos are dangerous. If I lived here, they would likely create some long-term health problems for me. Sergs has become my go-to place when I'm craving a burrito. They carry California burritos which I think basically means there's fries inside the burrito ! I'm a creature of habit so I pretty much have only ordered that , the carne asada fries , and the birria tacos. All three are delicious but the California burrito is what keeps me going back !!! It tastes so good and makes me miss California burritos from California lol. If you ask for hot sauce (the green one) it kicks up the taste ten fold !! So delicious ! Regarding parking , there is actually parking on both sides of the eating area. When I first came I thought it was only on the left side and would struggle every time I came. Placed an online order. Supposed to be ready in 15 minutes. Been over an hour and still no food. I see people place orders in person and get their food many times over......what's the problem! Don't do online ordering if they are going to get forgotten and disrespected. Staff made me feel like I was the one with the issue. I spent $75+ and after a hour....still no food. Ridiculous. In all honesty, I only went here because Los chapporos was closed. Last time I am coming here. Understand being short staffed and slammed but a hour + wait is unacceptable......and many people are getting their food before me. You can tell I'm irritated....and still no food. read more
