On a recent Tuesday night, two friends and I were supposed to gather for wine and cheese at Veritas, but it was packed. We ended up at Sette--not a favorite of any member of our group of three, but an OK option. Our two pizzas (one margherita, one with prosciutto, artichokes and mushrooms) and one pasta (cavatelli with sausage and broccoli rabe) were reasonably good. My pasta was cooked a hair too long and generously salted, but it was fine. The service was well-intentioned and eager, but scatterbrained. At times, too rushed (especially when we said we needed more time to peruse the menu--he hovered), and then too slow (a cheese plate arrived before drinks; the server disappeared at check time). Oddly, only two red wines by the glass were offered when we were there-at $9.50 and $15 per glass respectively. My friends opted for beer and I had a glass of prosecco ($11). read more

I'm so surprised to see some low star review here but Sette provides something to the Dupont neighborhood, and really all of DC, everyone should appreciate. Sette is a chic, casual italian eatery with laid back ambiance, a fabulous patio for the warmer weather and a menu full of class "american italian" favorites. Came here saturday night with three girlfriends and were seated for our 9p reservation without issue. There did some to be some kerfuffle with a large party of 10 that had been waiting for over 30 minutes. We watched the girl ( no doubt the reservation maker) yell at the hostess and then proclaim "fine then, we're going to five guys". After hearing that, i really didn't feel so bad about their late reservation. But really, a party of 10 and you don't expect at least a little wait on a saturday night? Anyhoo -- their loss was our gain! We started with a bottle of bubs (an absolutely steal I think the bottle of prosecco was under $30 and quite good, actually) and split the fried calamari (delish with a spicy tomato dipping sauce), foccacia with prosciutto, arugula and cheese (to die for) and tri colore salad (my favorite. refreshing, delicious and fresh). All were excellent. Then came the main courses, all of which were shared. The fettuccine bolognese was delicious and you could tell the pasta was fresh. The margherita pizza crust was crisp, sauce was tangy and just the right amount of cheese. Chicken parm was absolutely glorious. perfect thickness, great coating, delicious sauce....i am hungry now just thinking about it. Pasta with clams was simple and understated but still delicious. We all had the foccacia with nutella for a dessert -- spectacular, easy to share and something I will 100% be replicating one day in my own kitchen. Sette Osteria is certainly not the absolute best italian you'll find in DC but it IS a great neighborhood spot with a solid menu sure to please everyone in your party. With as many restaurants as are in Dupont Circle one would think an establishment would at least feign an attempt at winning your repeat business. Not so at Sette. I made a reservation for 4pm but ended up arriving at 3:15. The restaurant was virtually empty (interesting, considering many in the area had lots of people hanging out despite the odd time) so the host said we could dine early. I told him we had reservations at 4 but he did not check us in, which then prompted Open Table to contact me for neglecting my reservation. Very annoying. The waiter was very rude and left empty glasses and dirty dishes. He did eventually ask my brother if he wanted a refill, but when he said, "No, thank you," the waiter rudely retorted, "Good." I live only a few block away from Sette and have had amazing experiences at most places in the neighborhood that I've tried. With competition like that I don't know how Sette stays in business. Probably the most expensive non-flavorful lunch I have had in a long time... Ordered the calamari (Calamari Fritti - Crispy calamari with spicy tomato sauce) as an appetizer...fried perfectly but it was bland. Created my own sandwich from the Ruspante (Fried chicken breast, Provolone cheese and arugula) but asked for it as chicken parm. I was charged an extra $3.00 for the tomato sauce which I wasn't aware of until I saw the bill. The chicken breast was huge, couldn't eat all of it...and this too was very bland. It was Sunday night and my dad was visiting. Better take him to a place that I couldn't afford, I thought: Sette Osteria. The hostess greeted my dad in Italian, which threw him off a bit. "Hola!" he said, after an awkward pause. She seemed stuffy, but turned out to be nice and accomodating, especially considering that we had told her we were waiting for "2 to 7" other people to join us. What is with the beer selection here? Dos Equis is the darkest you can get...you'd think they'd at least have some Belgians, but this is not the case. I had a disappointing Paulaner, and my dad, who didn't recognize any of the other beers, had the Dos Equis. My dad was clearly disappointed at the serving size of his lasagna, but, sensing that it was one of those posh, city restaurants, he didn't complain. I would have complained about my Chicken Milanesa (cold, no sauce, un-filling), but I didn't want my dad to think we were being ripped off. The good thing was that we still had room for desert, and the chocolate cake was good. My dad loved the chunks of Feta cheese in his cheesecake. Surpisingly, we were in and out in a little over an hour. My opinion: It would be smarter to be a waiter here than to be a customer here. read more

I was very excited when we decided to try out this new restaurant that we have not had the opportunity to go to since it was opened a few months ago. We got here with a party of 6 and although the patio was 80% full there was a table open for 6 on the patio and the dining room was nearly empty. The host told me that we had to sit inside because we did not have a reservation so i asked that we sit at a table next to the open window and pointed at it... He said yes and ran up to set it up. The problem was he was not setting that table up but set up a whole new table in the middle of the Dining room not next to the window as promised. I talked to the manager this time and then the host came back and said it was reserved. I will give the rest of the story after this but at the end of our meal, after over an hour, those tables were finally sat... They were empty the entire time until then. We finally all got our food to go with the warm 2 btls of wine we ordered (white should be chilled!?!) and my food was cold and the sauce had actually congealed to the point of a skin over the top. I complained and he asked if I wanted a new one; I said yes please. It came back 8 min later and was still the same plate, just reheated evidenced by the bites out of it. The only reason we ordered a 3rd btl of wine was because it was raining and we had a birthday with 4 girls so did not want to go out in the rain. I honestly blame this all on bad management, not the staff who did what they could to make the night okay. I came here for happy hour by a recommendation from a friend and I ordered what the friend recommended as well. I got the red sangria which was pretty good and: French fries: not bad only because the truffle oil saves it Calamari: my least favorite dish, didn't really care of it Margherita pizza: pretty good Cesar salad: decent The friend also recommended the chicken sliders but we opted out for the tiramisu. I dined at this place for this first time ever this week even though I've been in DC for almost 3 years now. I realized soon enough that there's a reason why I never really hear people talking about this place, despite its convenient location. To sum it up--the service was uppity (read: awful) and the food was...not particularly memorable/bordering on "ech". The real deal-breaker for me started when I asked the waitress to describe what type of pasta cavatelli is. Let's break it down now--I think I said something along the lines of, "What type of pasta is this?" and pointed to the dish on the menu called "Cavatelli All ' Indiavolata"*. (I love me my pasta and carbs but I'm no Italian cuisine connoisseur.) Anyways, this lady, who clearly couldn't care more, responded curtly with, "Whatever it says on the menu." Okk. I take this response in stride and try to ask my question again by rephrasing it. The second time around she still doesn't answer my question and says the dish has sausage and broccolli. Um, thanks for reading the menu back to me! I knew that lady! Finally, on the third go-around, we get on the same wavelength---she actually addresses my question and says, "Honestly, it looks like earthworms." Yes ladies and gents, she just described the dish as earthworm-y looking. That probably should have been my cue to totally switch up my dinner choice, but I stupidly still order the dish anyways. It was a ho-hum dish overall. The broccoli rabe is definitely still bitter. (I am not counting this against the dish since that's what broccoli rabe does, but more making an "FYI" note.) Meanwhile, the sausage it comes with was ground up into tiny bits, which only further exacerbated the earthworm-imagery that was stuck in my head and affecting my palate. Suffice to say, I ate only half the dish. To be fair, the server was attentive enough after our food came by refilling our water and asking about whether we wanted dessert. Unfortunately, I still got the general feeling that she was doing the bare minimum to get by. The way she addressed my party felt slightly condescending overall. All in all, I will NOT be going back. At least, not until the staff gets an attitude adjustment and/or starts carrying a thesaurus with them. Solid spot for sure! From the looks of the website you would think you were headed to an unchill pizza chain but this is certainly not the case. We met two other couples here on a Wednesday night and had a great time. I'm not sure if they take reservations, but I would recommend it. It took about 40 minutes to get a table but thanks to the bar and minimal wine menu, I was a happy camper. Food: I got a really great tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella and also chicken. My boyfriend loved his pizza but I wasn't a huge fan. I skipped dessert but one of the guys at the table ordered tiremesu and it looked unreal! Service: Solid Location: 5 stars! This is a lively modern-feeling Italian restaurant which is right next to the DuPont Metro stop, so it's ultra convenient. It has a pretty big menu so everyone should be able to find something they like. The star of our meal was the spinach gnocchi. It truly tasted like it was homemade by an old Italian grandmother. The veal dishes were also great and everything tasted fresh. They also have a large patio which can accommodate big groups, which can be hard to find in the city. I do think they have too many tables on the inside, however as it feels very squeezed and cramped. read more

SETTING: My fourth visit. Colder than cold out. 5 of us at the bar for happy hour. Friday night 6pm. Very few diners. STAFF: - Nathan at the bar. Friendly chap. A keeper. - Uncertain if he thought we nodded on having a second glass (which we didn't) but we were charged for his random extra pour all the same. At least at $4 each for the newly-opened house red it was still a deal. - Note: happy hour is only available at the 12-or-so-person bar. CUISINE: No complaints by those in the group who split the happy hour calamari. DECOR: Bar is cold on bare skin. Right side of bar views a "back area" a bit. Tele for distraction, for good or bad. - Paper napkins. Better on the rest. - Restroom okay. - Main dining area sports farmstyle rush seats and tables tightly intermixed, so be prepared to be in a boisterous, Euro-style setting when it is full. - Smartly added a make-shift double-door portico for the winter months to cut the draft. Classy drapes might be hard with wheelchairs, strollers or crutches. (Or so goes my excuse for that.) RESULT: Would go again. Worthy of: drinks out - though bar is so-so, dessert, date, family (if not too loud for parents, etc), friends, group of friends on a full night might be too hard to hear as it gets loud... but at least that means we might not be too loud for it. I really like the homely atmosphere of this restaurant. The waiters were very friendly and joked around with us, saying we looked too young while pouring glasses of the Chianti Classico Riserva Banfi '05. I enjoyed this wine very much. I had the Buffalo mozzarella wrapped with prosciutto and sliced cantaloupe for starters (this was solid), and the ravioli della nonna for my main course. The ravioli was very tasty, and I think hand made, but the portion was relatively small compared to some of the other pasta dishes that my friends ordered. Overall a great dinner! read more

I had the pollo parmigiana. Service was average. The chicken itself was decent, the mozzarella cheese was very good, but the sauce (gravy) was awful. I thought the price was too high as well (23.00). They also serve potatoes with it which doesn't make sense to me when you offer pasta as a side. Don't try to switch, you will be charged! Definitely did me a favor if they were going to pour more of that bright orange colored sauce on it. You can do better in the area if Italian (or chicken parm) is what you are seeking. read more

Consistently delicious pasta is in a friendly atmosphere which is great for people watching and usually great for conversation too. The burrata with avocado and tomato appetizer was the best I have ever had. The pastors are a mix of classic Bolognese style dishes (which are perfect) and some more adventurous types also. Many of the pastas are homemade. The wine list is great-list of wines on the menu are by the glass or a bottle and these are very reasonably priced. Topping out at $38. If you are feeling a bit flashlight have many wines that are more expensive on a separate menu. I have eaten here for years and have always found the pastors to be superb the wine is delicious and the atmosphere welcoming It's a great place if you're going to the Phillip's Collection for a concert or to see an exhibit. read more

So I had a fairly unfavorable experience here back in September. I came here with my best friend for our weekly dinner dates. We were really excited to try the place because it was beautiful outside and we were feeling great. The menu also looked like we would love it. When we got there we got even more excited. I suppose our excitement kind of jinxed our experience since we started to get a bit ahead of ourselves -- as I am now. The ambiance of the place was classy and beautiful. Everyone looked happy, and it was completely packed. It felt very open because of the ceiling to floor windows and large dining area. We had a reservation, and got a place by the window since the wait to sit outside would've been very long. It was perfect since we felt like we were sitting with everyone outside, just we weren't outside. Did have a few awkward eye contact moments though. I saw they had Italian soda on the menu. We knew it was meant to be. We started saying how this place is awesome and even though we hadn't tasted the food yet, we wanted this to be "our spot". The waitress that took our drink orders and brought out the bread was great. She was incredibly nice and seemed to know what was up. There was a table of about 12 people in the restaurant right by us that day. This is where it took a turn for the worse. Our waiter took our order. My friend ordered a "white pizza" -- he started to ask her if she's sure this is what she wanted but she did not hear him and he stopped himself from asking. I then ordered a pasta dish. The "white pizza" came out, but the waiter told me the pasta was going to take a bit longer. He seemed very frazzled and couldn't balance everyone in his zone. There was a table that arrived after us, sitting nearby. The "white pizza" was not what my friend had expected. The waiter seemed to know this was going to happen and said he could bring her something else. She was disappointed but said she would be happy with a margharita pizza. In the meantime, there was a huge dragonfly flying around on top of our table that no one seemed too concerned about. We waited another 20 minutes. Finally the pizza came, but still no pasta. The waiter said he was sorry but it's because of the group of 12 that was there. Soon after it seemed as though he gave my pasta dish to the wrong table. We were going to go to ice cream and a bar after so I wasn't looking to take anything to-go that I would have to carry. Long story short, I ended up splitting the pizza with my friend. I kid you not, we were waiting for the pasta for an hour and a half. By the time it finally came, I just wanted the bill and to get out of there. He offered us a dessert on the house but we said we didn't want it (even though it didn't seem like he was even supposed to do that). I got the dish packed, which was another struggle, paid for everything, left a undeserving and generous tip, then got out of there. In summary: (1) I'm sure the waiter meant well -- but blaming bad and slow service on other customers was not nice. The restaurant should be able to handle and accommodate groups of different sizes. (2) The waiter should not have offered us the free dessert if he was going to be hesitant giving it to us. (3) Waiting 1.5, almost 2 hours for pasta is unacceptable. Also, why was the pizza brought out first? The point of going to eat together was to eat together. Should have brought both out at the same time regardless of cooking times. Anyway, this did not end up being "our spot" and my friend was left disappointed not getting her white pizza, and I my pasta. It is very unlikely that I will come back. Tucked in here as the wait at Bistrot du Coin was too long for the amount of time we had to make our engagement. Wonderful location, the atmosphere is nice, however the service and food are mediocre at best. Our server decided that to make the best use of time, he would wait on our table of two and the adjacent table of two at the same time, which I didn't really mind. However, our "partner table" got everything before we did, bread, apps, dinner, by an average of 10 mins per course....How do you bring one table bread and then wait to bring the bread to the table right next to it later?!? Grilled Octopus Risotto was okay at best, nothing spectacular, Gnocchi dish was better, but still, its not a dish that would make me visit again. At least we got out of there in time to make our engagement...however I truly wished we had more time for Bistrot du Coin that night. read more

Let me preface this by saying I only do happy hour here. But this is one of my favorite happy hours in DC. The food is all very good - amazing calamari and zucchini. The food selection has lots little plates that include meatballs, flatbreads and salads. The pizza is delicious, not the best I've had, but it tastes fresh and homemade which is asking a lot at $6. Very disappointed by the food. My husband got the pasta with lobster and the lobster was no good. I got the New York strip steak and there was absolutely no flavor to it. We ordered a couple bottles of wine and they almost tasted like vinegar. We sent them back. On the up side the appetizers were good. Faux Italian eating place of questionable quality. It's the morning after having dinner at Sette Osteria, and my stomach is still feeling queazy from having a few slices of the pizza special. The pizza, described by the manager as paper thin and crispy, had in reality a medium-thick gooey crust and slathered with parmesan cheese of questionable origin -- the kind of cheese that sticks to teeth like a fungus. It was foul. While I'm told that Sette Osteria is not bad for lunch, it becomes a watering hole of alcohol for a younger and noisier crowd in the evening, making discussion over a business dinner impossible. I very much enjoyed my visit to Sette, I honestly can't really complain about anything. The décor was nice, the dining area is mainly a big open space, the tables are well spaced out where you can enjoy your meal and your dinner conversation without being involved in the conversations of every other person sitting around you. The inside is nicely decorated with bright colors that give a warm inviting vibe. I will say the bathrooms could use a little bit of an upgrade but they were clean and that is much more importantly than being overly fancy. The service was good; the main waiter was friendly and helpful. Also during the visit a woman, she may have been a manager or owner or something stopped by to check on the table and she even went so far as to apologize for the food taking a while to be delivered enough though it was easily within an acceptable amount of time. I thought this was very professional of her even if it was unneeded. The food was the real treat, a friend that I went to dinner with stated that she had eaten abroad in Italy on multiple occasions and the food at Sette was comparable to authentic Italian cuisine from real Italian restaurants in Italy, if that isn't a compliment I don't know what is. Started with the Bruschette Miste, basically tomatoes, mushrooms and black olives on three separate pieces of toast, all three were good with the tomatoes being the best, the olives were a bit salty but olives normally are, excellent, next was the Suppli E Crocchette, not as good as the Bruschette but mainly because part of it is a bland fried potato portion. I'm told it bland on purpose to serve as a palate cleanser. For my entrée I had the classic lasagna, I feel like you can never go wrong with lasagna and I was not disappointed in my choice, it was well put together with a nice combination of cheese, noodles, meat and sauce, all cooked beautifully and the flavor mixed well. Also had a very good and strong mojito while I dined. Service, atmosphere and food were all strong at Sette and I could see myself returning to sample other items on the menu, well worth a visit if you're craving Italian in DuPont. read more

Happy hour, nice staff, gnocchi, pizza, European sports. That, in descending order, is what's good about Sette. Everything else is boring. But come here anyway if you want solid Italian food with no wait. Don't come here for salads. Why would you even do that? There's a SweetGreen three hundred feet away. The vegetables here aren't that fresh, and yes, that $13 Rucola e Finocchio salad really is just peppered lettuce with a lemon squeeze. Sette has the same Euro vibe as Cafe Milano (it's owned by the same team) and serves pizza that's almost as good as Paradiso's a few blocks away, but it never draws anything remotely like the crowds those places do - a big plus for me. The $4 Peroni, $6 Margherita pizzas, and various pizza-sized $5 "focaccias" make the happy hour a real value (7 days a week, 4-7pm), and generally no one but you and your friends will be vying for the bartender's attention. Everyone on staff loves soccer; I watched most of World Cup 2010 there and loved chatting with the bartenders through the games. This is not a place to choose if you're watching your fatty fats, because I just don't think they care about their healthy options. The free bread is also jaw-jarringly tough. But you're nearby, the drinks are cheap, the pizza's good, and for the next day: the gnocchi is the best hangover cure in DC. read more

I bought a Travelzoo deal for 69$ for a 4 person brunch with unlimited mimosas. I thought this was a great deal so we all went on a Sunday afternoon. The place wasn't very busy but we had reservations any way so seating was not a problem. It took way too long for us to be greeted and we were all very excited to try their mimosas. But when the waiter came over, he was nice enough and he did bring us our drinks. Then we waited way too long for him to come back and take our orders ( I would say close to 15-20 min) and then our food took FOREVER to come out. After over an hour of waiting for our food (all the while they were refilling our drinks pretty promptly) the server came over to apologize that the kitchen was taking this much time. We were also visited by both of the managers who offered apologetic remarks. One manager even said that they just rolled out a new menu and the kitchen was struggling. We are understanding people, and in no hurry, so this wasn't too much of an issue for us. At the end of our meal, we were surprised with a complimentary dessert for our patience. This is what saved the waiter's tip! Of course, we tipped on the full price of the meal, but overall, I think this place is overpriced and the food is nothing special. I had the crabcake eggs benedict and for 18$, I have had way better at less fancy establishments! The crabcake was obviously frozen and you couldn't really taste the crab at all. It was that thinly shredded type of crabmeat and way too much breading. I wouldn't order this dish again. I would rate our food experience 2-3 stars, but the drinks were quite tasty! I would not pay full price for a brunch at this place. We left the table promptly after the bill came back and when I looked at the clock... we had been there almost 3 HOURS! Hope they can get their kitchen straightened out, because I am sure other customers wouldn't appreciate waiting so long to get their orders taken and then served. Another thing to note is that they have a nice outdoor seating area if you are in the mood for that. Overall, the food was very good but the service was horrible. Ok-- the good stuff. We shared a margherita pizza (th crust was excellent) and a basil pasta dish with eggplant and peppers (SCIALATELLI alla CONTADINA). Both were very good, end of story. Now, the service. When the waiter asked us how we were, we said "Great, how are you?" STANDARD! His reply "Terrible, it's been a long night and I wish I weren't here". Ok..awkward. I get that you maybe had some bad customers, but it's not our fault. So we tried to talk with him a bit and cheer him up. We thought we did a good job, he laughed with us and seemed to be in a better mood. When he brought the bill we asked if his night was better..his response, "It will be a whole lot better in 30 minutes" (this is when they were closing and we would all be out of his hair). Well sir, I'm sorry that dining at your restaurant and paying for your service was such an inconvenience for you. Next time you come to my place of work, I'll be sure to let you know that I want nothing to do with you and then proceed to drive that point home as often as possible. read more

Made a reservation for this place because it had the best bottomless mimosa/bellini deal in the area, and I wanted to have a nice brunch with friends visiting from out of town. Service was very quick and got right down to the matter and that is something I was a fan of right away. One other friend and I ordered bottomless bellinis and the drinks were definitely free-flowing (we both got so hungover afterwards). My friends ordered a pasta dish and flatbread and I ordered the brunch tart. We all tried a little bit of each other's dishes and I have to say I had entree envy because I definitely enjoyed the pasta and flatbread more than my brunch tart. Still, it was a very enjoyable experience overall and we left very happy and drunk. I would love to come back and try some of their pasta dishes! read more

This place must have a Jekyll/Hyde complex, because people seem to either love it or hate it. In the three times that I'd been here, I haven't had a bad meal. Maybe I lucked out with my orders (veal scaloppini, merluzzo, margherita pizza w/ anchovies), the cook was having three good days, I had too much wine, or I'm a bad Italian eater (despite having backpacked through Italy one summer). Also, I liked the salads, the fried calamari, and the pizza (for example, better than Bertucci's). Service was courteous--we started with wine at the bar and had to move our check to our table. Haven't been for a formal dinner, but this is a GREAT place to sit outside on a nice night, have a drink with your friends, and people-watch. I wish DC had more restaurants/bars with street seating like this, but I guess I understand since the weather is often atrocious out. But the patio here has a very European feel; it makes me want to just loll about and have a leisurely drink and conversation. I've also ordered food -- very yummy. I've gotten the Estiva pizza, which is basically a Margherita pizza without marinara sauce. The mozzarella and tomatoes were very fresh and well-seasoned, the crust was wonderful. One minus -- last time I was there, our waitress told us they couldn't serve alcohol outdoors after 11PM. I guess this is a city rule? Their homemade pasta is some of the best in this city hands down. The chicken Carbonara & the shrimp Strozzapretti are stellar. However, the price point for the portion they offer is a bit too high. Great service, excellent wait staff. I visit at least twice a week. If they make their portions larger, they will get my 5th star. read more

Excellent and authentic Italian style pizza and reasonably priced wine bottles are what I like about this restaurant.

This review is for happy hour... at the bar; it was great! Was here with a couple of friends; $4 beers (not a great selection, but ok beer moretti), plus a wide selection of wines by the glass and rail drinks; a great selection of interesting and tasty happy hour food specials that should satisfy every taste (including $6 for a margherita pizza!). Also, the place was not crowded, so was easy to order food/drinks and carry on a conversation. read more

Great Italian place just off Dupont circle. If it weren't for the terrible bartender this place probably would have gotten 5 stars. They have a wonderful patio that is great when the weather is nice outside. I was early meeting some friends for dinner so I grabbed a seat at the bar. It's a descent size bar but most seats were empty and it took a while for the bartender to acknowledge me even though he wasn't busy doing anything. I placed my order and asked if the TV could be changed from the news to a college football game, he just looked at me and walked off. After my drink came I asked him again and after he rolled his eyes he changed the channel. That was about all the interaction we had before I joined up with my friends for dinner. Thankfully the service improved with dinner and the bartenders bad attitude seemed to be isolated. I ordered a special risotto veal Ossobuco and it was outstanding. The risotto was perfectly cooked and seasoned, it had fresh peas mixed in for a nice balance. The Ossobuco was outstanding, one of the best I have ever had. It was literally falling off the bone and I never needed a knife to cut it. It was accompanied by a rich braise which made it perfect. I wish i had room for dessert, because the Tiramisu looked amazing, but ill have to save that for next time. read more

Tasty place stumbled upon while staying near Dupont circle. I think this place was pleasant enough but it did not knock my socks off. The atmosphere was nice, the service was decent and the food was okay- nothing overly impressive. We were sat at an awkward table between the bar and the kitchen/bathroom route. I felt like I was in the way of the wait staff during my dinner- just an awkward place for a seat, I had a steak flatbread and a side of olives. Olives were probably the highlight of my meal. Very tasty. My date enjoyed his pasta dish. Overall tasty but not overly outstanding ---2.5 stars. read more

Three and a half stars. Despite the Osteria in the name, the thing to get at Sette is the pizza. Now, you may ask "Why go to Sette when the new and expanded Pizzeria Paradiso is just a few blocks away?" and the answer I will give you is that it depends on what you're looking for: their respective approaches are very different. Pizzeria Paradiso knows how to execute a classical Neapolitan pie very well, but their service concept and beverage selection is very American. Sette, on the other hand, is brought to you by Franco Nuchese of Cafe Milano, and thus has a more European attitude and feel to it. You won't find t-shirt wearing, heavily tattooed and pierced servers here (at least not visibly). What you will find here are wood-fired pizzas using high quality ingredients and a lovely outdoor seating area at the corner of Connecticut Ave and R Street; great for people watching on a sunny day. While the pizzas don't quite match up to Paradiso's (particularly the crusts), they are very good. I'm a fan of the Quattro Stagioni (four seasons) -Tomato, mozzarella, mushrooms, artichokes, Italian sausage and ham, and the Indiavolata - Mozzarella, spicy pork sausage & broccoli rabe. Keeping with the Italian look and feel, wine is the beverage of choice here. so, in Dupont and looking for a place to bring you back to your days in Italy? Poor Service + average food = 2 stars; I can't say I wasn't warned. I read the Yelp reviews before we went. Here's my feedback. I was visiting DC this past weekend and my friend recommended we meet some other friends here. We arrive and they refuse to seat us until the entire party was there. Okay...not a big deal. Finally, most of our party arrives and they seat us. Two minutes later, the rest of the party arrives and we order. I was not very hungry, so I just ordered the Tomato and Mozzarella salad. My friend and her boyfriend order a salad and the ravioli. Another friend orders pasta and the other couple orders a salad and pizza. We share a bottle of wine. I mention we are in a bit of a hurry (I have a conference call in an hour). Food arrives pretty quickly. Good??? No, not really. The ravioli is cold, so my friends send it back. The server takes it to the back. A few minutes later, another server brings back a plate of ravioli. It is the same plate...they stuck in the microwave (my friend can tell because he sees the spot where he stuck his finger in to test the temperature). He calls the server over and asks why they stuck the food in the microwave as opposed to bringing him a new serving. The server replies "I am sure they didn't stick it in the microwave." Lady...there's a big fingerprint in the middle of the ravioli...they just stuck it in the microwave!! My salad was fine...not too hard to screw up tomato and mozzarella (from my perspective). So, we are finishing our food, and the server asks if we want dessert. I need to leave, so I say "no." My friends decide they are going somewhere else for coffee and dessert. So I ask for the check and remind her that we are in a hurry. She brings the check. I reach into my purse and realize I have no cash. Luckily, all my friends do. They put in. She returns and I give her the bill ($125) with the cash and direct her to put $30 on my debit card and take the rest of the cash. A few minutes later, she returns with the receipt. She has charged the entire bill on my debt card AND she kept the cash! So I call her back over...I ask her to reverse the charge and rerun it. She asks "why?" I told her because she just authorized 4 times more money than she should have. After a few words back and forth, she goes to rerun the card (so I thought). She comes back with a receipt that says $30. I ask her "where is the receipt showing the reversal." She responds "I talked to the manager and he says it will only run through for $30." I was tired of arguing with her and I am now late for my conference call. I sign the new receipt which says "$30" and I leave. The next day, I check my bank account. There is a pending transaction for $150 from the restaurant! That means, she ran it through the first time assuming a 20% tip. This transaction remains pending for 2 days! That means, there was $150 I could not access until the transaction cleared. Finally, on Wednesday, the transaction cleared for $30. read more
