Stopped in after 8 on a Thursday hoping to get a drink and bite at the bar. It was packed with a fun combination of locals and visitors and the host went out of his way to ensure we had drinks and watched over us until two seats opened up. Then we met Eric, who continued to provide the best service in town and did his best to make sure everyone at the bar knew each other. We shared a flavorful mushroom quesadilla and Caesar salad with mahi. The mahi mahi was so beautifully prepared it flaked apart with a fork, and the dressing was much lighter than the creamy version too many restaurants serve these days. Even with the wait at the beginning (get those reservations in!), it was a leisurely hour and a half of good food and wonderful company. read more

Just amazing. What a great treat in Key West. We were lucky to go right after the Keys open after the pandemic and this normally busy place was just opening so there was no wait. We had the fish feast for 2 and it was a great way to taste multiple things on the menu. All of it was fresh and yummy and it leaves you in a good spot, not to full. A friend recommended this restaurant so we decided to try it on our last night in KW. Went with my husband, our 17 year old son and his friend. The bread is delicious, everyone liked it. They have a very good wine selection. I got the tuna poke and crab cake for dinner. The poke was not the best flavor and kind of mushy. The crab cake was very good. My husband yellowtail special and said it was pretty good. The kids got the three cheese ceasar which they loved, and the meatloaf which was a little mushy but ok. Overall the flavors were not the best but ok. The service was also good. I feel like this place is trying to be upscale, but the food just isn't there and they allow animals inside. We argued over this rating, I think it should really be a 3.5. RJ was adamant that it should not be higher than a 3, which is A-OK so that's still a good rating. Their service was great, it's the entree prices that we were unhappy about. Don't get me wrong, we are in KW and are happy to pay for something that makes us walk away and say wow, that was amazing and worth ever penny. That just didn't happen. RJ also didn't like that it's called Seven Fish but we could only find 3 on the menu, unless they are counting shrimp and crab as fish. They did not have grouper for an entree which was what we really wanted. The grouper sushi was fantastic, and the crab cake appetizer had the flavoring of conch fritters. But $33 for Mahi?? It was good but not $33 good, and it was just barely over cooked. I said maybe $22 good, and RJ said $24. Plus we can get mahi anywhere. The corn salad was delicious, but we both read mashed potatoes on the menu and RJs came with halved potatoes. It's dark inside, and there are windows viewing the parking lot, so it's not like you are paying for a view. The sound really carries in there so it's not quiet even with a half empty restaurant. There was a very loud party of 10 or 12 and we could hear everything they were screaming about. They do take temperatures, and are seating every other table but we might as well have been sitting with the loud table. I'm glad we tried it so now we know, but it won't stay on the rotation. My experience at Seven Fish could be summed up by what I like to call "being Gatsbied." It's when someone RAVES about something to the point where you believe that it has to be the greatest thing on earth. And then you go to experience it for yourself and it just doesn't meet the sky high expectations you had. I'm sure there's a psychological term for this but I use that term bc I'm a huge Leo fan and loved The Great Gatsby when it came out and I raved about it to everyone and they all came back and told me it was "just ok. Not worth the hype." So that's essentially what happened with Seven Fish. My ex boyfriend LOVED this place. He had gone to Key West a few times on family trips and told me many times that this was his favorite restaurant of all time. When were dating, he went there for a trip and acted like dinner at this place was the highlight of the whole vacation. He even looked it up on Yelp once and was flabbergasted that this place didn't have a solid five star review (as you can see, I'm not helping the case there). So obviously, my expectations were sky high. So when I went here myself, I was flying solo. When I walked in I knew I wanted to sit at the bar. The ambiance is nice. You can tell it's more of an upscale restaurant than many others in Key West. I just ordered a bottled water. I looked at the wine menu but nothing stood out. My biggest disappointment was the lack of appealing seafood entrees. They have quite a few but nothing sounded that great. I wanted an actual fillet of fish, not scallops, shrimp or seafood pasta. I went back and forth on what to get. I settled on the mahi dish which comes with mashed potatoes and ratatouille. It felt like it took awhile for my meal to come out. I would say 20 minutes or more. I figured for one dish it wouldn't take that long. The mahi was good. Tender and juicy. Flaked right off. The mashed potatoes were also good but just not the right side for the mahi. It did not complement the fish well. Mashed potatoes should be the side to a nice hearty steak: not a light flaky fish. The ratatouille made things even more weird. It again just did not feel like the right side for this Fish. It was a better choice for side than potatoes but still not right. The ratatouille was just okay. Lastly, sitting at the bar I was the only one by myself. I'm so used to bartenders talking to me or at least asking me a few questions (especially in a tourist destination it's to easy to just ask "where are you from?") This bartender was nice but didn't start any type of convo with me. In fact he'd just stand in the back corner of the bar when he didn't have anything to do. I just thought that was odd. I know I'm the one traveling alone and I don't expect everyone to go out of their way to be nice to me. But I feel like trying to at least make small talk is something I've experienced with every bartender (regardless if I'm alone or not!) So all in all, this place is not at all worth the hype that my ex put on it. It's just ok. Don't go out of your way to come here. But I guess it's a good option if you're looking for a nicer dining experience while in Key West. read more

We have some local favorites that we always go to, but this time, based on a friend's recommendation (who is also a chef and restaurant owner), we decided to try Seven Fish. Though we were dining during a pandemic, the only evidence of it were the masks and table separation. Service, ambiance and food have not suffered at all. It was perfection. Our server was Callie. She was friendly, engaging and helpful. She suggested the chef specialties/local faves (both entrees featuring fresh locally caught fish) and it was fresh, beautifully prepared, unique in flavor and damn delicious. Our experience was outstanding. We made last minute reservations around their peak dinner rush. We were first impressed by the suspended concrete and fountains out front. The inside was just beautiful. Irina was our server. She was great! They had someone constantly refilling our waters, which was very much needed after a long day of drinking. We tried the tropical salsa.. very good. For entrees, we had the local favorite and mahi special. Both very good! The curry cream sauce was delicious!! After reading the reviews I had high expectations, which continued when we walked in. Clearly this place has thought about sound quality, as the walls had foam to absorb the sound and the wooden chairs had soft plastic fittings to prevent chair dragging screech, yay! It is easy to have a conversation without shouting even when the restaurant is 80% full. However, after that it proceeded to go downhill. The Papa's Daiquiri was $14 and tasted like a watered down mai thai. We split a large Caesar's salad and although it was disappointing we had to split it ourselves, it was comical the 2 dishes the server delivered alongside. They were finger plates we would have struggled to get 3 pieces of lettuce on. Lol. We had to request reasonably sized salad dishes and no one came around asking if if we wanted fresh pepper. My mixed grill shrimp was overcooked so I only ate 1/2 of one of the 3 pieces. The chicken was pretty good and I loved the sauce that was over the rice. The veggies needed a steak knife to cut without the risk of half of it flying off the dish, however, no one offered that up so after struggling with my butter knife and unable to get our server's attention, I gave up. When my plate was cleared there was no comment on how much food was left of the plate and if everything was OK. The Mahi, $33, was bland - it really could have used a sauce. It is a cute enough restaurant - food was a bit unusual, but especially on the kids menu. Our 9 yr old niece literally had nothing to eat. The kids menu is filled with things that kids typically won't eat - like fish and meatloaf. To a youngster, that is super "yuck"! Highly recommend they evolve the kids menu to include more kid friendly options like hamburgers, chicken fingers, pasta (with non spicy tomato sauce) etc. There wasn't even a desert she would touch! We stopped in at Seven Fish yesterday night because it had good ratings. We also were happy because they had indoor dining with air conditioning (I am not the biggest fan of eating outside). They checked our temperature when we first came in which I had not had done since Covid started. We ordered the grouper sushi because my girlfriend is not the biggest fan of raw fish. She loved them, and as you can see, she ate one before I even had a chance to take a picture (big Yelp no-no, she should know better). The grouper was still hot which meant it was definitely fresh. I ordered the shrimp scampi, and I was definitely surprised with the amount of asparagus. I like asparagus, I just was not expecting such an untraditional scampi. So I'm going to do this review with a list of pluses and minuses. Pluses: -Very clean, modern decor -no bad smells of bad fish or bleach -all of the seafood and vegetables ingredients are very fresh. Everything definitely has a very fresh and crisp taste to it. -they are very good at accommodating gluten-free and they can do a lot of things gluten-free despite only having one thing on the special menu marked as such. -Everything was cooked perfectly the temperature -scallops were amazing -shrimp salsa with mango was amazing and they made a GF version for us Minuses: -The martini glasses have a weird C shaped stem which makes them uncomfortable to use. In fact my husband would not order a martini once he saw the glasses and we watched a table beside us struggle to use it, pick it up and not spill the beverage. -food preparation to accommodate allergies may take a little longer, way longer -Although the food is very fresh and tastes good, we just were not blown away. There didn't seem to be much as far as creative seasoning, ingredients, in preparation. This is why it's not five stars. read more

I had seafood the last couple of nights and wanted to try something different. Normally don't order chicken at restaurants, but made and exception and was very happy with it. Without a doubt the best chicken I have ever eaten. Meat was tender and juicy. The mushroom sauce was the perfect amount of richness complemented with the intense shitake flavor. The curry yellow tail snapper is by far the best dish there.... Melted in your mouth with the curry. So good. I gave it 4 stars because the drinks were sub par. 1. No pina coladas 2. Skiny colada tasted strictly like sweet run 3. Margaritas VERY STRONG ( this is a good thing though lol) Overall the place was awesome, the staff was great. I picked this place based on the 4.5 stars and the theory that seafood restaurants off the water have to try harder. The atmosphere is smart, spare and very modern Florida. If we'd stopped with a classic daiquiri and grouper roll, this would be 5 stars. Unfortunately, we did not. The scallops ($35!) were huge and well prepared but arrived with a side of chunky mashed potatoes topped with chunky mashed peas topped with ... cream of spinach soup? But the real travesty was the "crab" cake in bland mystery sauce. The high point was definitely my landlubber husband's banana chicken with sushi rice. Moist, flavorful, interesting.
