Recently opened Sichuan Chinese restaurant. Clean and small dining area. Came here with family members to try it out. Had my favorite vegetable, snow pea leaves. Cooked perfectly with a bit of crunch in it. Very much enjoyed the Shanghai fried rice cakes. Good snack. Sautéed egg plants were pretty good. Reminded me that eggplants tend to be mushy. I like it a bit more fried. Jinsha Prawns are probably my favorite dish here. Kind of like Walnut Shrimp at other restaurants but a salty instead of sweet flavor. Definitely recommending this one. Loved munching on the fried pork intestines. I typically prefer them not so fried for more flavor but these were a good crunch. Beef in Chili Oil was interesting. Not as spicy as It looks, more of a bumbling flavor. Beef was soft and good. For soup we had the Chinese Yam with Chicken Soup. Kind of tasted like coconut soup but overall a warm pleasant feeling. I ordered the braised pork belly to go and it was pretty good. The jasmine rice was moist and fluffy and the pork belly was perfectly seasoned with anise. I liked the baby bok choy in the braised pork belly. Portions were large. It definitely tasted better than the braised pork belly at 101 Teahaus as it wasn't overcooked. read more

We finally tried 7 Spice this week and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of the dishes! I had the chicken with garlic sauce and hot sour soup. We also ordered some vegetarian dishes with tofu. Everything was very well prepared and tasty. They have quite an extensive menu as well. Welcome to the neighborhood, Seven Spice! I found this spot while browsing Asian delivery options by my place, and I'm so glad I did. The food is solid, authentic Chinese with some of your typical American-Chinese dishes. Here's what we got and what we thought: -Crab Rangoons: least fave bite of the night. The wonton wrapper seemed to have soaked up the grease, and there just wasn't enough filling. Will skip next time. +Hot and Sour soup: Yum! Plenty of tofu and other goodies in this cup. +Wonton soup: love that it came with plenty of greens, and the wontons were silky. +Spicy chicken: Lil fried chicken bits that remained tender loaded with chilies to bring that nice numbing feeling you get with Szechuan dishes. Wasn't really spicy though but still delicious. +Mongolian beef: Quality beef used for this dish because the meat was nice and tender. Sauce was tasty too! +Fried rice with chicken: pretty good! Again, the chicken was of good quality. Nice and tender. Right amount of egg. Yum yum. One odd thing (maybe a mistake) was that no white rice came with our order. We made some for our leftovers. First of all Let me just say I am a RIDE OR DIE CHINA TOWN FAN BECAUSE Ronald and his Staff are so courteous and his families recipes are THE BEST. However I still like trying new Asian restaurants. With that being said I went in excited to try this new restaurant 7 Spices in my neighborhood because it SOOO close WITHIN walking distance to my house. Unfortunately, I left very disappointed and WILL NOT RETURN. I ordered the egg roll I was told I HAD to order 2 because 2 to an order. Now most places are flexible and will let you order half but I was told NO! GOOD thing I got 2 because they are mini and the only flavor came from the chili oil I drizzled over them. Next I ordered a cup of Hot & Sour soup with crispy noodles aka fried wontons and was told they don't have either. Soup was good and very HOT. I burned my tongue. After asking lots of questions about their large plates because their menu is very vague I decided to order H27 Dried Fried Spicy Shrimp Prawns with white Rice. First of all the shrimp were not Prawns maybe large shrimp. Covered with BAZILLIONS of THE REALLY SPICY RED . Right away I noticed the Shrimp still had the tail on them which was ok & It was fried with a lite batter. So far so good. Time to dig in. It was spicy and crunchy. A little TOO crunchy. Then I had all these pieces of shell in mouth and I got some with the pepper flakes stuck in my throat. NOT GOOD!!! HELP!!! We have a situation here people!!!! ‍ When I called my waiter over and he said everything alright I almost jumped up Hoping he knew the Heimlich. But instead after a big drink of H20 I said the shrimp still has the shell on it. He said very rudely AND??? I said you didn't tell me it would fried in the shell he very sarcastically said you didn't ask me. I replied oh yes I did . Because your menu is so vague I asked extensive questions about the dishes and how it was prepared. He's curtly said do you want it or not? I, of course replied , no I do not. In a very put out manner put he asked if I wanted something else & I only because I WAS STARVING , after asking many questions ordered the shrimp Lo Mein. Obviously, I was in a shrimp mood and a glutton for punishment. The dish was HOT with heat shrimp were a nice size, it came with some mix vegetables like carrots, onion, in the flat Lo Meir noodles. However, it just didn't have much flavor. With the pandemic and all the restaurants that are trying to stay in business this Asian restaurant will never make it unless they 1. Serve adult beverages 2. Acquire customer service skills. Remember the customer is ALWAYS right! 3. Improve their menu by adding more descriptions under the dishes. 4. I don't see how the flimsy plastic covers on table Are Covid compliant. They are very hard to eat on because they slide all over the table. Reuse not good. Normally I would consider going back to A new restaurant after they have been open for a while but not after the wait staff was so rude. The food here is fantastic and I believe they do not use MSG when cooking. I cannot taste the typical MSG with their cooking. No RLS for me tonight :-). I highly recommend their Lo Mein dishes. I had the pork lo mein and it was very flavorful. I started with the most fresh steamed dumplings, wonton soup and bok choy. My fiancé had the egg drop soup and she doesn't ever eat steamed dumplings but this time... yes and she loved them! She had the Mongolian beef and it had just the right spice. I have been exploring different Asian restaurants since moving to Austin, and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the casual atmosphere at this new Chinese restaurant. The menu presents a good balance of traditional dishes and more westernized ones, so there's something for everyone. The food was fresh, served hot and the tea fragrant. My meal consisted of General Tao's chicken, an egg roll, and egg drop soup. The entire meal was underwhelming. The egg roll was mushy and almost as flavorless as the egg drop soup. The chicken was bland and I found a couple of pieces that were undercooked. The heat wanted to be there, but just didn't quite make it. Even the fortune cookie was missing something...the fortune inside. The best part of the meal was the rice. I asked for spicy mustard and sweet and sour sauce, I was given a packet of duck sauce and one of "hot" mustard. The best part of the experience was the lady working the counter, she was sweet. This was my second attempt, because I always give places two chances, and I feel my lesson has been learned. It's too bad, they are in a great location and at noon the restaurant was empty with the exception of a single couple and myself. I think it's time to revamp the menu. read more

I just bought a lunch special with vegetables and steamed rice with veggie egg roll and hot &s our soup. This meal was totally disgusting. The vegetables seemed to be barely heated and tasted gross. The vegetables tasted like they were cooked??? In an old dirty pan. I eat vegetables and rice in various restaurants and this tasted gross. The hot & sour soup tasted watered down with no flavor. The sweet & sour sauce was watered and sugar was put in it. I will never eat at this place again. read more

New Chinese restaurant has opened in Austin. Ate there last week. Meal was very good. I ordered Ma Po Tofu and it was about as good as I've ever had. My wife ordered Sizzling Beef with Black Pepper and it was also quite good. I am on the fence on this place. A little pricey for the portions. Dan Dan Mei was okay at best, noodles were kinda mushy and the bowl was very wet. The big miss was no Sichuan pepper and kinda shy on the pork. Egg rolls were not really worth the calories small and skimpy filling. Steam dumplings were ok but I don't think home made. I will try them again in the future maybe could be new opening glitches I hope because they have many items that I would love too try. read more

Seven Spice is a little jewel of a Chinese restaurant in the Northwest Hills neighborhood of Austin and one of our favorite places. The menu goes well beyond standard Chinese-American fare, the place is open and pleasant, and the staff unfailingly accommodating and cheerful. Some of our favorite dishes are the cumin lamb, shredded pork with water bamboo, long bean with minced pork, and snow-pea leaves. I have no idea what "water bamboo" is but it's delicious. read more

Pleasantly surprised by how tasty the dishes are. We ordered lo mein and veggie fried rice and both were really tasty. The garlic bok choy, chicken and vegetables and general tso's are excellent. The only dish I didn't love was the ma po tofu-it was a little too oily and had too many Szechwan peppercorns. And please stop using styrofoam for rice-it is banned in so many states and countries due to its painful environmental impact. Rice can easily be packaged in small paper cartons instead. read more

I was really sorry to see China Cafe go under during the CCP plague last year. I'd patronized it and thought it was a solid neighborhood restaurant for 20 years. Seven Spice, however, is not only a worthy successor, it's better. So far I've had the smoked pork with leeks (outstanding), the orange beef (an excellent job), the dan dan noodles (very good version), and the shredded hot and sour potato appetizer (tasty and novel). I'm going to be trying a lot more things on the menu. Overall, the menu leans a little more to traditional Chinese American fare than some of the other restaurants I order from like Asian Cafe and Fat Dragon, but this is not a criticism. They do a better job than most of their competitors at these dishes. I'm going to be a regular customer. read more
