They ruined my wedding dress and refused to change it even to the original form. In a bind with my wedding dress that came in late but needed alterations, I called Sew Elegant about an appointment to get my dress altered. The woman who answered said she had to check given the time crunch (which is a month). This was all understandable. However, I could hear her asking if they could fit me in, and before they gave me an answer, they asked "Where did you buy your dress? What designer?" I couldn't remember the designer but I mentioned I did purchase it at a chain bridal store to which the swift answer was "No, sorry, we're very busy." Really not cool. Very disappointing as all the other ratings said how nice they were and did quality work. That may be true about quality of work, but their response to my request seemed really elitist and harsh. read more

I had high hopes for this tailor since she was referred by Lovely Bride but unfortunately the quality of the work was very poor. Similar to Grace S (so thankful for her review) I had a very simple/form fitting dress. My dress is designed to be super tight. After 3 appointments, the dress was still too big - it was baggy at the sides and too big in the chest/butt. It was pretty clear Esin was not going to take it in anymore - paying $950 for tailoring of a dress that didn't cost much more than that, I was very upset with the turnout. I took my dress to a new tailor (the one Grace recommended) a week before my wedding and the new tailor completely fixed the dress. She also confirmed the cups Sew Elegant used were cheap materials, the bustle was done incorrectly, and the dress needed to be taken in a ton. The new tailor was half the cost of Sew Elegant even with the rush fees. read more

I seem to be in the minority, but I had a really rough experience here. I found every appointment to be rushed, and Esme and her crew to be distracted--they always seemed surprised when I showed up for an appointment, and even once gave me the wrong dress. I also never felt listened to. Twice I had to come back and demand more seriously that they make a change I wanted, instead of talking me out of it because they wanted to get me out the door. Any time I complained, their first instinct was to say it was just the dress, rather than working to correct the issue. I also found the quality of alterations somewhat lacking--lots of puckering in the seams and the hem was longer than we had measured, meaning I was tripping over dress all night. If I hadn't paid (an insanely high amount of money) up front, I absolutely would have taken the dress elsewhere. read more

Esin is amazing! I bought my dress at a store in California for my NY wedding and I was referred to her by a Vera Wang employee. Not only is she the sweetest, cutest, most caring woman ever, she is EXTREMELY talented. After having the dress altered I felt really self concious about the top of my strapless dress being too low on me (Vera Wang dresses are designed like that) so she literally took apart the entire bodice and rebuilt it by hand. I had my wedding dress altered by Esin, after my appointment I felt confident that the work would be done accordingly. I had to decide if I should go ahead and pay what it was going cost to alter the dress. She is EXPENSIVE!! The only issue I had was, when I picked up my dress I got home to notice one section on the dress wasn't finished! This was a HUGE inconvenience to me, meant I had to return the following day and wait for the dress to be Altered. Very bad work! Not done by the business owner. She passes on the work to her team. I took my dress in 2 weeks before my wedding and she assured me that it could be done properly! she told me that because it was beads it would be $900!!!!! seeing that my wedding was in 2 weeks I felt that I didnt have a choice! When I saw the job that she had past onto her team I was shocked! I wont go into details, bottom line is that I WAS NOT ABLE TO WEAR IT and a couple of days before the wedding I had to buy a new dress. I don't write many reviews and typically I reserve reviews for the places I want to support but.... I can't let this slide. I've worked in service and retail jobs since I was 15 and I know it can be a tough world to inhabit and that brides in particular can be high pressure clients. That said, I'm not exaggerating when I say that Esin ruined my dress. And she knows she did. Here's what happened: I bought a Marchessa dress at a sample sale. It was missing some beads and it had about four or five small pulls in the silk chiffon overlay that the sales girl told me should be easy enough to fix. She showed me what needed to be done and did one for me. We went over the dress carefully and agreed on a fair price for it based on the pulls and the missing beads. A seamstress in Brooklyn who was booked referred me to Sew Elegant. There were so many wonderful reviews I ignored the negative ones. I called and made an appointment. When I arrived Esin was busy with someone else and had me wait a while and then attended to me in between fitting other customers. I showed her the missing beads and the pulls and explained that I didn't need alterations, I just needed the beads and the pulls fixed. I had brought the dress in a shopping bag for transport from Brooklyn to Manhattan, but I asked her to please steam it when she was done and keep it hanging in the plastic garment bag. She said she could do what I asked, but I had to go get the milk-white rhinestones for the beading on the dress. So I spent the next three hours scouring the findings and trimmings stores in the area to find the exact beads that were needed. Again, that seemed fine to me. I know they are unusual and she is busy. When I came back we came to a price agreement: $100 for the beadwork, the pulls and steaming. She was done just a few weeks later and I was very happy. But when I came to pick up the dress, she rummages around behind a curtain and pulls the shopping bag out, puts it on a chair and walks away to go tend to another customer. My heart sank. Why was the dress still in the paper bag? I opened it and the dress was in a heap at the bottom of the bag, with the beading- with all of those little spikes that hold the rhinestones in place -laying on top of the delicate chiffon. As I gently lifted the dress, some of the settings caught on the silk and caused more pulls. When I took the dress out I saw there were dozens of pulls, some of them actual holes. The beads were fixed, and they looked good, but my dress was a wrinkled mess with bundles of thread poking out here and there. Esin returned and saw me blanche. I asked her "what is this?" She told me to look at the beading first. I said the beading looks fine, but what *is* this? She immediately gets defensive and raises her voice at me and says "I didn't want to hang it because it is too heavy!" which is just nonsense. It had been hanging in my closet for a few weeks, it was fine to hang. I asked her about the pulls. "Those were there!" she exclaimed. I told her a *few* of them had been there, and she was supposed to fix them, not make more! Who treats a wedding dress this way? At this point there were a few things going through my head: one my dress is ruined. Two there are other brides in the store and I don't want to freak them out completely. Three, I don't want to fight with this person. I just don't. I just want to get the hell out of there and figure out what to do next. I said "I asked you to fix the beads, fix the pulls, and steam the dress." She said "I'm never working with sample sale dresses again. This always happens!" This struck me as an incredibly crappy thing to say and I said "that's probably for the best. Just charge my card. We'll figure this out." She had the nerve to charge me the full $100. When I got it home, I saw she didn't even do what I asked on the beading. I took a day to calm down and called and explained the situation to one of the assistants. She said Esin usually doesn't give refunds. I said I'm fine paying for the bead work, but that was only 1/3 of what she said she would do. The assistant said she would ask. She called me back shortly and said that, surprisingly, Esin had agreed to refund $50. I was fuming, but I accepted it. I have taken the dress to two other highly recommended seamstresses. Both of them said there is nothing to be done for the size and number of the pulls on my dress. The holes are there and if I try to cut the threads, the holes will just get bigger. This is my wedding dress and while it wasn't perfect before, it now looks shabby. I was a good customer: polite, prompt, and clear about what I wanted. I did what she asked, agreed to a price and she screwed it up and then raised her voice at me. I'm sure she's worked miracles on thousands of dresses, but I would warn anyone who has a sample dress or a used dress to stay the hell away from Sew Elegant. She may decide that you and your dress are not worth her time or care either. read more

I picked up my dress 2 days before my wedding just to find a hole in the middle where the seams were open. The response was "we have too many dresses to make sure all are done". My mom was really upset and questioned her high price (1000$) but was challenged and told that it was a big job. If it was such a big job and we paid 1000$ it should have been ready on time and not have any open seams 2 days before my wedding!! read more

With so little time, two dresses I was still deciding between and so many layers to alter on the one I finally picked, I was worried I'd be turned away at the door. Not at Sew Elegant. I purchased a Nicole Miller wedding dress and was not quite 100% about it.. I loved the body of it and loved the poufy pleated bottom but I really wasnt happy the way the top of the dress looked style wise... with the key hole back design and tight around the shoulder fit. I purchased the dress anyway as I thought it would be simple to rework the top to my liking. Well the first seamstress I went to (recommended by NM Livingston NJ store) was completely baffled by my redesign request and seemed uncomfortable doing anything out of the norm (plus she had some pretty antiquated ideas about keeping sleeves from slipping off one's shoulder: a visible fabric string attached on either cap sleeve which would be seen along my back! big red flag......anyway later that week I was at MJ trimmings bridal dept and casually speaking to the woman there about my dilemma she said she heard great things about Sew Elegant and said I should go see her. She was right around the block so I went over w/o an appt and Esin welcomed me with a smile. I showed her pics of my dress and ideas for the rework. She said bring it in tmrw but she thinks it would be no problem. I brought it in the next day and we went to work... She had me find fabric to match the ruffled skirt bottom and after going in 20 fabric stores found a dead on match in color and pleat. woo hoo. I was very happy in the end... she made my dress very unique and had the idea to sew in a vintage looking bracelet on either side of my dress (she carefully took it apart and voila added the bling which *made* the dress! It looked truly vintage couture. If you have any sort of dress 'issue' I highly recommend her. If she cant do it no one else can either. She is a bit pricey yes and I recommend trying the dress on before leaving the store a final time. She packs the dress all up so nice so you feel guilty for asking however I'm glad I did b/c she made an accidental stitch error on the slip and it was visible thru the dress since it was form fitting. I did need to press a bit, that this stitch will not do, I dont want it seen etc. and after a few moments she agreed. I had to come back 3 hours later while they reworked a less visible stitch up the side. Again try the dress on before you leave for the last time. Came back exactly 3 hours later and it looked great! All in all you cant do better than Esin and crew! read more

I never write reviews but I had such a TERRIBLE experience that I had to say something. I called and asked for a consultation appointment and when I arrived, Esin and one of her assistants greeted me nicely. They asked me to put on my dress and started putting pins on me. To not waste her time, I told Esin that I am not leaving my dress there and that I had to bring it to a custom veil appointment after. She was immediately offended and said why did you come here today? You just want to know the price. I said, yes I do and she quoted me $850 which is ridiculous. I don't know why she's so surprised when they are not willing to give a quote without you coming in for the appointment. And how can she expect me to pay for a service without even knowing the price?? She also proceeded to say to her assistant that it's because I was just going to another tailor, which is not true and I told her that. She also refused to answer any other questions I had about the dress until I decide to come back, so fine. So I went to the changing room to take off my dress and I noticed there were blood stains on my shoulder strap that was not there when I put it on just minutes ago, which is disgusting. I recalled Esin talking to her assistant (not in english) and pointing to the same side of the shoulder strap but they did not say anything to me. I told her assistant and they cleaned it off for me but that should not have happened and should've said something first. Needless to say, I did not go back and I will tell all of my friends to avoid this place. read more

I'm a wedding planner and I will send every single one of my future NYC brides to Sew Elegant! Don't look anywhere else, seriously. My bride who got married this Sunday 5/21/17 was traveling to NYC from Maryland. The day before she was due to leave she picked up her dress from a tailor there and it was horrible. All comments from her final fitting had been totally ignored and it fit terribly. I called Sew Elegant on Tuesday night and they got us in at 9am Wednesday morning. The dress was a disaster but they were willing to work late to open up the entire bodice and make it work. My bride left totally thrilled but at 2pm on Wednesday ended up buying another wedding dress (I KNOW!). She called Sew Elegant and they told her to come right there with it. Well, they altered the new dress in a day. She picked it up on Friday and it was pure PERFECTION. I've never seen a dress fit this well and they had a day to make that happen. I brought her a strapless dress with extra lace and tulle and she created the most beautiful long sleeve wedding gown I have ever seen. Stay away. Extremely unprofessional. Confused my appointment with someone else. Stained my dress and claimed it was there the whole time. Hem was way too short - my shoes are fully exposed in pictures. The alterations on the top of my dress were thoughtless - completely changed the look I was going for. They added a bra which you could see in all of my pictures. Every time I tried to tell Esin that I was unhappy she yelled at me insisting she was right. Extremely over priced. I can go on and on. I was referred to Sew Elegant by the bridal boutique where I purchased my gown. The dress has a scallop hem and it was way too long. When I came in for the consultation, I told Esin I didn't want the look of my dress to change, since it has a heavily linear beaded design on the skirt. She pinned the dress to show me what she would do and told me the alteration price. Unhappy with the way it looked, she advised me not to touch the dress. She told me to wear taller heels or to save my money and buy a party dress to change into for the reception. Who does that?! I would have totally give her my business in a heart beat! This review is long over due but it was definitely on my to do list. My husband and I were in NYC for a hair and nail beauty show known as IBS. On the flight there his pocket had gotten torn and every time he put his wallet in it then the wallet fell out. Definitely not a good thing in NYC or any where. So our first morning there we looked up a couple of seamstresses and some had no answer and others not helpful. When we called, Esin answered the phone and was so sweet telling us know problem just come on over. So we walked a couple of blocks and arrived there. Esin greeted us immediately. She was so sweet and attentive to every detail. While the pocket was being sown on I looked around and saw some of the most beautiful wedding dresses I've ever seen. She worked with Vera Wang but I must say she's amazing on her own. She was even surprised I had been to Turkey before. We left with the jeans about 1/2 hour later. I must say if you are looking for a very professional and talented woman for your wedding or even for a torn pair of jeans, go see Esin. I promise you won't be disappointed. read more

Recently I brought a party dress to Sew Elegant for a few alterations along the bustline. The material was very delicate and I was slightly concerned with what the outcome would be. These ladies are amazing. I did not want to make a fuss or spend a lot of money on my wedding dress. I bought a sale dress at Anthropologie, thought it fit great and that I just needed it to be taken up a tad. Boy was I wrong. The owner of the shop showed me how the dress was bunching in the back with all the buttons and the shoulders were also drooping. It was tight in the wrong areas and way too big in others. After a moment of terror when the professional seamstress offered that I go buy a different dress that fits better... we got to work to figure out what they could do to make it better. The extra challenge I offered was that I was leaving town that week and would be back for only a couple days before my wedding. They took all the measurements (which I assured them would change pretty drastically bc I would be running around in the summer heat for the next 3 months and usually drop 10lbs...) and I left town. When I got back they had made a miracle happen. The dress was just about perfect but they wanted to make a couple final fine tune adjustments upon seeing me. I went in a couple days later to pick up a dress that was literally made for me. The comments I heard constantly at my wedding were "that dress fits your body so perfectly, it is incredible"... well it it wasn't me and it wasn't the dress, it was 100% Sew Elegant Bridal. xo read more

This women saved my wedding!! After my Dad's passing, we had to move our wedding to this year and I had lost a tremendous amount of weight from the original alteration. Now, you would think that I would go back to the original lady who did my original alteration, well, I was not that happy with the first person who altered my dress (who is listed here) so I started asking around for recommendations. I will say that the price is higher than I budgeted or thought I would be willing to pay, but based on the reviews and meeting Esin in person I'm convinced it's totally worth the money (I've learned the hard way, you get what you pay for). I took my wedding dress to be altered here on the recommendation of Lovely Bride, where I purchased it. It needed to be taken in around the waist, bodice, and shoulders, which was a mesh fabric with a lot of beading. Also, cups were added, and the hem was shortened (bottom of my dress was tulle with lining). Esin and her team did an amazing job, especially with the beading on the bodice--you could not tell at all that it had been altered, and it fit me well. But it was SO expensive, and I felt rushed every time I was there. For example, I would've liked to try out some different types of bra cups, since my size is small and so the shape really makes a difference, but didn't have the option--and was charged $30 extra for them on top of the hundreds of dollars I was already paying, which was annoying. And the woman hemming the dress got unnecessarily short with me when she was trying to measure and I was talking to my maid of honor (since I was excited about having a dress that actually fit me). They also wanted me to pay in cash, which I thought was ridiculous, but they also accepted credit card. read more
