My husband & I recently purchased a 9 x 12 hand knotted transitional style rug from Shabahang Royal Carpet. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. They couldn't have been nicer & more patient with us as we looked through the rugs available in the store. Moe was able to give us a detailed history of each item we liked. When we finally decided on our rug, he gave us a very competitive price. The price was minimally more than the mass produced rugs I was seeing at Room & Board & this was is handmade. My wife and I have been shopping for area rugs for about six months and we've been to perhaps a half dozen rug places. We happened to stop into Shabahang last week. The owner, 'Mo', as he prefers to be called, helped us thru perhaps fifty rugs which was no small task. Finally he suggested that we pick out our 'top five' that he would deliver to our condo so we (actually only SHE) could evaluate them in-situ. Two days later Mo arrived with two helpers, moved the furniture out of the dining room and spread out each carpet. Three of the rugs we liked in the store were rejected out-of-hand and for the two we liked, they repositioned the (heavy) table and chairs so we evaluate the two rugs. We really liked the one that we were 'iffy' on when we saw it in the store. We bought it on the spot and Mo's two guys returned 30 minutes later with an under-pad that required everything to be undone and then redone once again. How many rug dealers are going to shlep five rugs to you, lay them out (with the furniture) and happily wait while we (she) decide? I don't know home many rugs are in our future, but if Mo doesn't have them (or can't get them) we will go without. My wife is particular; she says, 'Trust Mo'. read more

The last time I bought a dining room rug, in 2003, the kids were small and we were broke. I mail ordered something. This time when our dining room rug died I thought, I'm finally going to get a *real* rug. I did some research on buying Persian rugs and frankly was pretty intimidated. But when I walked into Shabahang they were very kind, applying no pressure at all. The man I worked with actually talked me down to a smaller rug, and encouraged me to look for something that I loved and go from there. He quickly picked up on the things I was responding to and pulled some extra rugs from a pile of new arrivals in the back. I selected a rug but was still nervous - would it work in the room (a.k.a. I might suck at choosing a rug)? He told me I could bring it back if the rug didn't work, but that he thought it very likely it would be great. And he was right. I got that rug home and put it down, and the dining room looks 1000% better. The rug is also softer and much easier to clean than the old one. I'm now plotting to replace our living room rug as well, with something from Shabahang. read more

This is now officially my second experience with purchasing a genuine Persian rug over the last 5 years and in fact it's my first experience with them that lead me to write this review. An experience above and beyond my best hopes! We needed to replace an area rug and we saw the tent sale sign. I went in later and Esfahan was such a help! He patiently showed many rugs, took out the ones I liked. I said I would have to have my husband look at them and he said they would bring them to the house! The brought them the next day. Esfahan's father and helper came. They were wonderful. After putting each of the rugs down, we all agreed on the one we liked best (even though it was not the most expensive...they are interested in a great fit and customer happiness). Mr. Shabahang measured the rug pad we had and had the helper cut it while I paid for the rug. The rug is of excellent quality and is just beautiful! We walk past it and sigh with delight. I dropped my rug off for cleaning at the Libertyville location, and picked it up at the Wilmette location. Friendly, knowledgeable owner and staff at both locations. Because of the good reviews, I decided to get some much-needed repairs done on my Bukhara rug at the same time. The stains and damage that I never thought would come out were gone without a trace, the fringe was beautifully repaired, and the worn out spots were hand-dyed to match. My rug was far from the most valuable or beautiful one in the store, but it was handled lovingly for the family treasure that it is to me. We first started looking for rugs over 15 years ago. We came into Shabahang and never went anywhere else. Mo and his son are fantastic! When my sons drive past the store they still say can we go in and say hi. They are in college now and still remember going in there when they were in kindergarten. They made it fun to shop for rugs. His enthusiasm makes looking at and learning about the carpets very enjoyable - he really wants people to know their choices and understand what makes one different from another. I explained to him that this rug belonged to my late mother and father and was very special to my brother and I. He cared for the rug as it was his own. The owner cleaned and restored this rug to it's original beauty. The owner was very, very knowledgeable about the entire process. He shared with me what steps he would be taking and kept me informed of the process along the way. When I went to pick the rug up I was overwhelmed at the magnificent job he did with this rug. The owner, M. Shabahang, is very patient in showing various pieces and explaining about their manufacture, style, and quality. He obviously takes great care to be knowledgeable about each piece he sells. The store has great variety and many styles of rugs we did not see at any other store. He had a good selection at the larger size we were looking for (12'x15') where other stores did not. After a few trips to the store, we whittled down our selection to 4 different carpets. We still weren't quite sure what would work in our room, so Mr. Shabahang brought them to our home and had them laid out, one by one, in the location they would be. My wife received a Persian rug that here grandmother bought in the 60's while on a trip. The rug was used heavily and had become tattered, dirty and quite worn. I contacted Shabahang Royal Carpet about cleaning it. Not only did they clean it well, they also made a number of repairs including bringing it's full deep colors back to life. The edges were frayed and they did a wonderful job of restoring the rug to nearly it's original quality. By far, one of the best experiences of my decorating process. I had been everywhere... I mean everywhere.....all stores on the North Shore, Evanston, many in Chicago, and Smithe in Oakbrook. I needed a large rug 10x14 for not a large price. I walked in and told Moe the size I needed and my price range. He said he could work with it. (Earlier that day, I had been told by a place in skokie that I could get a bound carpet for that price.) He brought a number of carpets to my house and we tried them in the room. I wound up going $1000 over budget but the value for the Peshawar I bought was amazing. (Btw, I had been quoted prices $3000-4000 more at other places.) Also, Moe has a great eye. Better than many "decorators" I have worked with. I highly recommend and I am very picky. read more

We recently bought a home and I have been shopping around A LOT to get the best quality and also at an affordable price and hands down, you don't need to look any further. Not to mention, I am always looking to support a family-owned business and the family who owns this store is very nice and accommodating.
