This was a first time adventure. We arrive, not knowing at all what to expect. The menu is a fixed price. Everybody at the table must order the same level of menu, and once you get there, you can see why. We all agreed upon the ultimate, and we're rapidly seated. The server understood instantly that we were rookies, and was helpful and pleasant for our entire adventure. He showed us how to place the orders for the broth pots that are used to cook the various items. He also showed us how to place the orders for more of the all-you-can-eat items. In addition to the meats and special items that came from ordering, there is a conveyor belt that contains more items such as pastas, vegetables, and things like tofu, fish, and other things. We each chose a different broth, and you have controls it your table that control an induction cooktop to heat it up to your preferred level. The only complaint I had about the entire visit is that the controls are hard to access. You have to bend down since they are under the edge of your table, and they are not intuitive. So you have to look at them. It is difficult. That is my only complaint. The broth I got which was mushroom based was very good. The meats were things like ribeye, New York strip, brisket, pork, shoulder, chicken, and you would toss them into the cooking broth for a number of seconds pull them out, and they would be cooked to perfection. Grabbing things off of the conveyor was extremely easy, and they managed to keep it full. Delivery of the meat items was achieved using a second train system that would stop at your table and you would unload your little items and begin using them. Very automated. You ordered off of a touchscreen, your items arrived at your table within two minutes. Again, I cannot say enough about the service. It was extremely fast! The server who personally handled our table was outstanding! The food was delicious, in the atmosphere was wild. The walls were covered with Japanese anime art, and the music was a mixture of Japanese pop and K-pop, with a little hip-hop thrown in for fun. The all you can eat model meant that our prices were still quite reasonable. Like most oriental all you can eat, they do expect you only need to grab what you will eat. They're not big on wasting food. And I don't blame them. Their prices are reasonable. Unlike conveyor belt sushi, where you pay by every plate you grabbed, here you are paying for the ultimate experience. This was an outstanding adventure. Had a great time and experience here for dinner for on Sunday! The food was great overall! Really appreciated the wide variety of veggies and sides that went by on the rotary. It is an excellent way to grab items at your leisure! Saw some unique items that aren't always on the menu at other hot pot places (would recommend the fish balls filled with egg and roe)! The broth was also fairly flavorful. I tried the mushroom and my partner had the sukiyaki. The sauce selection was also good- my only complaint was the chili oil was kind of harsh. The price is great for everything that is included for any level you select. I would advise to just go for the option that includes beef. It's why most go to hot pot anyhow! Was a little disappointed they did not have pork belly, but all the unique non-meat options made up for it. The service was good after we were seated. Drinks came out quick and everyone servicing the tables was friendly. They checked to make sure we knew the process and where the sauce station was. The only person that was maybe having an off night was the one at the front door taking people's info. There was a small wait (like 20 minutes), but it was not crazy busy at the front of the location. However, this woman looked like she wanted to be anywhere else doing anything else. The location is on the smaller side, but that is in keeping with the area. The inside is decorated brightly and is a lot of fun for fellow anime fans! AYCE hotpot located on Milwaukee Ave in Wicker Park. Parking is fairly easy. This place is quite the experience. We went for the top option which gives you extra meat and seafood options which your waiter has to take and it gets delivered to you on a train!!! Everything else is on like this carousel that goes around to all the tables and you just take what you want off it. There are choices of different types of broths from fairly bland for the less adventurous to spicy Korean broths. Basically you select your menu type and then broth. You can order specialized items through some screen at your table. I got kimchi broth and it was tasty and spicy. This place is very fun! Love the rotary aspect, lots of items in the menu, drinks (NA and alcohol), great place for kids even if they aren't big eaters! It's an experience for them. I came here on a Sunday around 1pm and there were three of us. We got the lower priced package which was $34/ person, under 6 is free. It was meat heavy, but the veggies / lots of fish options come through on the conveyer belt. I didn't think that the veggies were very fresh or that there were enough veggie options. They didn't have white potatoes, or tofu balls. If you're more into hotpot for the veggie delight this place might not be right for you. We got the spam fries which were good and very hot, a side of fries for my kiddo, and the steak sushi (fully cooked steak on a rolled rice). I got a hot tea, which tasted like fish water. The deal here is, you pay ahead for whatever you want. You get a bowl of broth, I selected mushroom, then you order your meats. The veggies and noodles are on the lower track, take whatever you want. Your meat comes on the upper track, many different ones to choose from. Throw it in the boiling broth, take it out and chow down. You get 1 hour for all you can eat. Including some nice desserts. I was so stoked to try this place. I had to add my name to a waitlist for a party of one and they would call me when my table was ready. It was about a 20-minute wait. But then I was seated at the counter next to another single. I ordered the top package which was everything (including all the meats) and dessert. You get 90minutes total and use an ipad in front of you to add meats and it comes via a train. You can also mix your own sauces at their sauce bar. There are some great options. I made my own and tried one of the housemade sauces. The RIBEYE was my favorite of everything I ate. All the food was fresh, easy to cook, and amazing. It doesn't fill you up too quickly so you can try plenty of items. There are something like 60+ items on the conveyor belt to try. Most give you instructions on how long to cook in your hot pot broth. You can get your broth refilled as it evaporates too....and drinks are extra, except for water, which is ice cold and such a welcome treat with one of the spicy sauces I tried. I love shabu shabu and frequent their Chinatown locations as it's closest to me. We came in and were seated right away with no reservation on a Sunday afternoon. The staff is very attentive and always refilled our water. They asked if we needed anything whenever they'd walk by. The food is always very fresh and the meat is soooo good. I always get the sukiyaki broth and it is very delicious. Their sauce making bar is has many options. I usually mix soy sauce and sesame seed sauce along with garlic and green onion as well as broth when I it is warm. WE have been to a few Hot Pots in the city and in the burbs. THis is one of our favorites. The stff is freindly and accomdating. I love that each person gets their own pot and their own broth choice. They have a rotary belt that brings you the veggies and noodles and you grab what you like. Do not lover order or grab because it is the manager's discretion to charge you for what you did not eat. This is my favorite place in Wicker Park, honestly maybe all of Chicago. I go here so often, once I went twice in one week and a server joked with me, "see you on Sunday" when I left Shabu Plus Rotary Hot Pot, my comfort place. There are some different tier levels you can pick from that include different things, I always go for the most basic tier though. There's also a couple different soup bases you can pick from. I highly recommend the tomato base, it literally always HITS. The beautiful thing about this place is how easy it is to try a ton of different things you might not have ordered normally! My favorite things to get are wood ear mushrooms, watercress, bok choy, yam noodles, and glass noodles. There are literally so many options. I love how the little info cards on the conveyor belt also tell you how long to cook the item, too. Of course, the star of the show is the MEAT!! You order the meat (and drinks and desserts) on the tablet at your table. The meat comes out on these sick Transformer looking semi trucks straight to your table. It is seriously healing to be here. Especially as the weather is getting colder, there's nothing like having a cold beer and hot pot with your friends! Sometimes they play anime music or kpop which is epic. I wish they'd play anime on the TVs (hxh is my recommendation) but every time I've been here it's usually got sports on so that the white dudes who got dragged here don't get overstimulated. Wow, what a fun spot! I love hotpot, and I've been a fan of conveyor belt sushi since going to one in LA as a kid. What a great concept, to have the hotpot ingredients coming around on the belt. When you come in you'll have to choose if you want the standard or premium option. Go ahead and get the premium--it was definitely worth the extra $10. Each person gets their own broth. I went with my sister, and I got the sukiyaki and she got the mushroom. Mine was a little on the sweet side and the mushroom broth was deep and savory. I love the whole concept of the broth flavoring the ingredients you add in, and vice versa. Some of my favorite ingredients that came around on the belt were the quail eggs, shrimp cheese, vegetable noodles and Korean rice cake. There's plenty of noodle, veg, seafood and other options coming around to keep you excited, but then there's all the sliced meat you can get--bacon, pork butt, brisket, NY strip, ribeye...it becomes a carnivore's paradise! If that weren't enough you can also order some fried side items that are included. The wagyu sushi was buttery tender, super flavorful, and I could make a meal out of those. The shrimp tempura had a nice fluffy batter, and the Spam fries were a surprising treat. The sushi taco was tasty, but a little too much going on. And don't forget to order dessert! The puddings are shaped like ducks and super cute. The mille crepe cake in mango was a delicious end to a big meal, and I'd like to try more of the desserts next time, but I was so full. My tip I might try next time is this: the broth cooks down as you go, and it gets concentrated from your pot boiling. The staff is very attentive and excellent about keeping your pot full, but the flavor was almost too strong at the end, so maybe pouring a little water in your pot to help refill it will keep your broth from getting too strong. Kaiten shabu!? Clearly this sushi restaurant turned hot pot spot has done really well for themselves. My friends took me here during a recent visit and it was great for someone like me that is plant-based. For $25 in the most affordable tier, I had access to a variety of fresh Asian veggies, tofu, and noodle options. All the options rolled around frequently so you are never short on options, and if you want to order meat, you can do so via the touch screen. A good hot pot spot also needs a fantastic sauce bar, and they are no stranger to the game. Excellent variety of toppings to build your own sauce along with a sliced fruit bar. My recommendation? Ponzu with green onions and garlic, or the shacha sauce with some chili oil. Only thing I'd recommend is for them to consider labeling the ingredients at the sauce bar of whether an item is gluten-free, vegan, nut-free, etc. I know seasoned folks will be aware but it would help others that are unsure or are having their first few experiences doing shabu. Last dinner and review of 2023! Came here for NYE dinner and wasn't disappointed! They don't take reservations, but we were quoted at 25 mins and got in earlier than that. The space is quite nice, and for smaller parties, you're likely sat at the single communal table instead of a booth. We've been to hot pot before, but our waiter explained how everything works pretty quickly. Ordering is easy, and it was convenient being able to see how big the portion sizes are for the veggies/sides before grabbing them to reduce potential leftovers. We stuck with mostly the beef, tofu, and some veggies. Over the years, I've learned that while I can never eat enough to break even on the AYCE cost, the best way to go about it is less carbs and more meat. The meat was pretty good quality too, so I was happy with that. The fried tofus and rice cakes are always nice to add some variation, and I enjoyed the tomato broth here. They have a few desserts on the menu (specifically the second tier of AYCE options) and we ordered a couple of mochi ice creams and two of the mango crepe cakes. We finished earlier than our 90 minutes and were encouraged to order more if we wanted to, but we decided to not overdo it or bring in the new year knocked out from a food coma haha. I think the appeal of this place is definitely the novelty of the conveyor belt! It's a fun meal experience because you can keep your eyes out on the rotating selections to add to your broth. However just speaking exclusively about the food it was pretty standard. I thought the tonkatsu broth I ordered was very watery and lacked a lot of flavor. But on the plus side the meat cuts were actually quite thick so you get full relatively fast due to the big meat portions that you order. The sauce station was well stocked and clean though so that's a plus. Overall it's probably more of a fun experience with mediocre food. One of my new favorite AYCE spots in Chicago! The value is unbeatable-- just $22 for the Yummy Plus course, which includes unlimited Chicken Breast, Pork Butt, Mochi dessert, and all items on the conveyor belt (which ranges from tofu/fish balls to veggies to noodles to spam). They also have well-stocked sauce and fresh fruit bar. The time limit is 90 minutes, which is more than enough time to completely stuff yourself. You choose your own broth base at the beginning, order meats and dessert whenever on a touchscreen pad (which arrives via a toy truck), and grab items off the rotary as they come.
