We decided to come here for dinner on a Thursday around 6 PM. There were already two tables dining and another party was seated at the same time as us, so there was no wait. There was only one server handling both taking orders and bringing out food. It took a little while for him to take our order after we were seated, but he did a solid job making sure everything we ordered made it to the table. We did have to get up a few times to get his attention while he was hanging out near the kitchen prep area. We tried the AYCE option at $38 per person. Each pot comes with two broth choices. The price isn't bad, but I feel like they could offer a few more seafood options and maybe include some appetizers. The beef selection and vegetables were good, but for seafood they only offered fish roe balls, shrimp and mussels. The shrimp being peeled was definitely a plus. Appetizers are only included with the premium AYCE set, which is $78 per person. There's also a sauce bar. I made my sauce the same way I usually do at Seapot and GoGi, but the ponzu was a bit too sour and the sesame sauce was pretty bland. Overall, I wasn't disappointed with the experience, but I don't think this would become one of my go-to hot pot spots. read more

I've been here multiple times and they truly never disappoint. We came in on a Sunday night and had no problem getting seated as a party of two, which was such a nice surprise. The ambiance is lively and welcoming, and everything feels clean and well organized. Service is always quick, which I appreciate when I'm already hungry and ready to cook! We did the AYCE and ordered the tonkatsu and sukiyaki broths (our first time trying the sukiyaki and we loved it). The meat quality here is seriously so good. Our favorites are the toro and wagyu -- so tender and flavorful every single time. We came here for dinner on a weekday night and there were plenty of open tables and we were seated right away. How it works is that each person can order their choice of meat, broth, carb choice (rice, vermicelli noodles, udon noodles, or ramen noodles), and by default it comes with mixed veggies plate but you can always swap out the options as you like although some subs will be for an extra fee. I ordered a medium American wagu portion with udon noodles, tom yum soup base, and the default veggies. My husband ordered the large American wagu portion with rice, spicy miso, and default veggies. The sauces were all self-serve at a bar station. I enjoyed the tom yum soup base and the spicy miso was also good but it had a bit of that numbing spice which I can only enjoy about 1 small bowl of before I need a break from the spice. Although we didn't drink on this particular night, I did see that they offer soju, sake, and other beer options. I even saw an "all you can drink" option you can do. Our server was attentive and checked on us throughout our dinner. This spot is good for a casual hot pot night or if you have a group. The options were pretty standard and more on the simple side, which was perfect for us as a casual outing. Winter calls for sweatpants, soft music, and shabu. Shabu Shack is where I like to shack up whenever I am craving some shabu in Elk Grove. Located in the plaza of Below 5 and Ross, you'll find Shabu Shack next to Indian Oven and Fish N' Things. Parking can be tough during busy dinner times but, there is parking even if you have to walk a bit. You walk in and if there's a wait, you can wait under a cherry blossom decor tree. I find the servers to be good at their jobs. My first time here, there was a girl named Christine or Christina who was working her b u t t off tending to us and the other multiple tables she was balancing. Now, onto the shabu! I love that they have Tom Yum here, that's one of the main reasons I tend to favor Shabu Shack because of this broth. Their Spicy Tontaktsu has a little kick! Might be too much for mild spice people, but it is memorable for me. I'd get both again next time I slide my way over to Shabu Shack. The hot drops are KEY for any spice lovers out there. I like to add 3-4 drops each into my sauces. It gets diluted as you dip your meats and veggies in the sauce, but you can always ask the servers for more hot drops. Recommend 1-2 drops if you like a little heat. We do the All You Can Eat option and the beef toro is my favorite choice of meat. First couple of times here, they did not have a sauce bar. Now, they do have one so you can create dipping sauces to your liking. Never had any desserts or used their bathroom so can't comment on that. The more I visit, I'll take note for my next update. It wasn't spicy, which is to my preference. We enjoyed the angus beef the most since it was lean and that's what we prefer. Service was pretty good even with just one person working all the tables. The server insisted on their interpretation and argued with me about it, which was frustrating. Beyond that, the service overall was poor. We had to flag down our server each time we wanted to order more food, and even then, some items never arrived. This is my 2nd time coming here both times with my cousin. I love that they have a private lot and there is plenty of parking, even on a busy day you can find a spot. You may have to walk a little bit. I parked in front of Below 5 degrees and I thought it was a good spot. We arrived at 11:30 when they opened. I got there a little early and sat in their bistro set they have set out front. At exactly 11:30 when I went to the door they opened the door for me and thanked me for waiting. When I entered they offered me one of the booths. The boots are nicer then the tables, they are larger and allows you to spread out and somewhere to put your purse while eating. The heating unit is set into the tabes. Some of the tables have table top heating units that sit on the table. We both ordered the creamy vegetable broth. They still divide the pot so we can each fish out our food as it cooks. I'm glad it's separated it. It makes it easier to let your food cook and not get it mixed up with your table mates. We ordered the Waygu American and Lamb. The Wagyu reminded me of the pork belly, both had a lot of fat. I think I'll stick with the pork belly next time as it's cheaper and it tastes the same to me. I was sadly disappointed as Wagyu meat has gotten so much hype. Maybe the Japanese Waygo would have been better, but it was too pricy for me. I love the bowel of veggies they give you. My favorites are the pumpkin and spinach. Next is the mushrooms and tofu and cabbage. They have big slices of Napa cabbage. My cousin gets the vermicelli and I get the rice. She's on a gluten free diet so the vermicelli is a fancy way to not eat gluten. Overall this is a fun place to hang out with your girlfriends over a good meal. read more
