My family loves eating and food, so when we came to Houston from Austin for a fun trip through the magnificent street that is Bellaire, we were looking for a place that would just MAKE our trip. Shabu Zone is definitely THAT guy (restaurant.) I mean, dam. (This is written 3 weeks after our visit.) The inside is huge, clean, very well-lit, and very high ceiling. You won't feel congested and it's a miracle you don't carry too much of the smell considering the 100+ individual hot pot broths steaming in the air. PACKED on a TUESDAY lunch (if a place is packed on Tuesday for lunch, you know they have BUSINESS business.) The staff moves fast too. Mostly younger workers, service is fast and responsive, and they clean tables with equal speed. Now for the value. This place might be the definition of value. My fam of 4 ate AYCE at lunchtime and with tips, it was around $120. This is an AYCE consisting of clams, mussels, blue crab, various pork and beef meat options, your individual hot pot (~7 broth types), vegetables, noodles, topping bar to make your own sauce + their own specially made sauces, and a small fruit/ice cream bar. TL;DR - The value is so high it demands you try it at least once. All-you-can-eat, large variety of quality items, and most impressively, reasonable price ($22 lunch, $30 dinner.) It was my first time here. My bff has been wanting to try hotpot. She didn't grow up around Asians so I have been showing her the ropes into eating different Asian places off Bellaire. We both chose broth #4 Tonkotsu. The soup broth had the right amount of flavor. The service was good. The wait staff were attentive and polite. We got too full off food to eat the desserts. This place is probably one of my top AYCE Shabu spots! The food here is so incredibly fresh. One of there very few draw backs is really how busy they are. It can become crowded trying to navigate through it all, but it is absolutely worth it. The first time I ever came here has been over 4 years ago on a first date with my husband and I've been hooked ever since!!! They have plenty of seafood and vegetable options. There sauce selection is a bit small, but you can do a lot with what they have. Fish sauce, chili powder, sweet garlic, black sesame sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, chopped chilis, and other basics. They have a huge selection of toppings and ingredients to get your broth just right. This is maybe one of the very few hotpot restaurants that I can give 5 's. I love that this place is not skimpy with the seafood. It's AYCE and it really is. Despite how busy it is the service is quick and super friendly. This is probably one of my favorite places ever. I have had Shabu Zone on my list for a looooong time and finally made it out for dinner- and let me tell you- I was NOT DISAPPOINTED! This place is THE BEST! We arrived early (5p) and were seated once more than half the party had arrived. The place was empty at that time but filled up quickly. Our waitress, Chang, was super knowledgeable and very, very friendly. She brought out seven small bowls for us to try the different broths and she even mixed custom dipping sauce for us!! All of the food was clean, fresh, and absolutely delicious. I especially loved what appeared to be wagyu beef (?)- a little fatty but not terribly so. Rules for cooking shabu- start with seafood because that stuff has to be done. Put your oysters, etc, in once the broth is at a rolling boil. Then dip your meats. Add starches like noodles last because they'll cloud up your broth. I found the frozen oysters especially SCRUMPTIOUS and I loved trying all the different things they have to offer. Our family loves to eat at Shabu Zone. We definitely avoid Sundays because of the long wait or traditional meal time hours (whenever possible). I recommend you come early or prepared for a reasonable wait. There is plenty of parking out front even tho the space is shared with the wide variety of other shops. The staff is very friendly and attentive. One of the reasons we enjoy visiting Shabu Zone is that they offer a nice selection of broths and are happy to mix so we can try out different flavor combinations. If you want to customize your soup even more, they have a condiment area. The center area has plenty of vegetables, seafood, toppings/sauces that can be used to make your perfect bowl of soup. We will definitely be back even though it is quite a drive for us. I recommend you give them a try as well. read more

We came here to eat on a Sunday after church, and for having a party of 6 got seated pretty quickly and did not have to wait. Service was quick and servers readily available to answer questions or make refills. They have broths for all taste buds. We really loved the spicy broth and the tonkotsu. There was also a sauce bar where you can mix your own concoctions. Their seafood, noodles/dumplings, and veggie bar were always stocked, full of variety and fresh. For our part having two people who don't like soupy food, they actually really loved the food and what they ate. They had a great meat selection, but we got #6 and #11 meats repeatedly. For the price this was a great all you can eat hot pot place. Coming from Austin, we don't have anything like this, and would probably frequent it if we had one. We got so carried away with eating I didn't get as many pictures as I normally do- we were very hungry and happy after this meal. This is one of my favorite all-you-can-eat shabu places in Houston! I go here with my family quite often. The location is easy to find and there's PLENTY of parking because it shares the same plaza as the Hong Kong Mall. Dinner time on the weekends is always pretty busy but every time I've gone, I don't think I've had to wait more than 45 minutes for a table of 5. Due to COVID, you do still have to wear a mask at the self-serve buffet area. Like most all-you-can-eat shabu places, dinner time usually offers more options of meat compared to lunch. My top favorite meat to get from here are: beef belly, akaushi wagyu prime chuck eye, shabu zone special prime rib, and lamb leg. They're all thin meats, which I love! We also tried the pork belly but, I wasn't a huge fan of it because of the way the skin texture was after cooking it. I normally do like pork belly though. It wasn't bad though! The self-serve buffet area has TONS of options. Lots of different options for noodles: egg noodle, udon, Korean noodle, ramen noodle, etc. There are also lots of seafood and vegetable options, which is GREAT. I love it. I also love the sauce bar. You can either mix and match to make your own or you can get one of their pre-made ones. There are just so many options all together. The broth is honestly a little bland, so don't expect too much flavor from it. I've tried both the tonkatsu broth and basic dashi stock A broth. Honestly with how much food you put inside the broth, it doesn't really matter too much about the taste of the broth. I liked that our server gave us some bowls of different marinated meats to try out that they said are new items they're adding to the menu. They were honestly both pretty good! Our servers were super nice and very efficient with bringing out our meats each time. I was so impressed because of how busy it was. Great service!! My wife and I were planning to try this place out the last time we came down to Houston but ended up trying Shabu Squared. We finally tried it this past weekend, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance was great with a massive TV (playing K-POP), spacious seating, and clean facilities. The broth selection was average (it ended up getting fairly salty by the time we tried the soup at the end). You get a selection around 10 cuts of meat and most of them were fairly soft, fresh, and delicious. The dipping sauce selection was mind numbing. We tried most of them, and my favorite was the sweet garlic. There was a decent selection of fresh vegetables and seafood at the bar. They also had Korean bonchon (which looked okay). The dessert selection was limited but typical for AYCE. The service was exceptional as the meats came immediately after we ordered each time. Overall, I would say that Shabu Squared has fresher meats and a "slightly" larger selection of meats with a 3x price tag over Shabu Zone. It gets a bit busy and you don't have to hear from just my review so if you don't come at the right time you can wait a while to get in. Yummy. We visited before Covid on a recommendation from a local and it certainly didn't disappoint. The food was delicious and the whole experience was a lot of fun. You are seated at a table that doubles as a cooking surface. You get to order your very own pot of broth as well as the ingredients. Some things are brought to your table (certain cuts of meat), and some things (seafood and vegetables) are available at a self-serve bar. (I would have been perfectly happy with just the ingredients from the bar). Our server was extremely helpful in patiently explaining the process, assisting us in learning to cook and order our food as well as in making recommendations. I had two servings of broth (I ended up extremely full!) I believe I had the number 2 and number 4 broths; from the two, my favorite was number 2, which was the spicy broth. There's lots of toppings to choose from ranging from noodles, to vegetables and seafood. Of course, there is the meat, which you can request more of whenever you're ready. We had all of the beef cuts, and they were all really good to me. I also appreciate the emphasis on cleanliness (mask wearing, hand sanitizer at each table, and quick clean up when a party leaves.) Finally a legit hotpot joint besides Little Sheep, and one that features AYCE. Shabu Zone is quite a large place with a bright atmosphere and relatively clean. The food selection was huge, with multiple soup flavors, piles on piles of veggies and side items, a sauce bar, seafood, and most importantly, 10 kinds of different MEAT. Favorite soup flavor is Tonkatsu, although I have yet to try all of them. You get your own individual pot, so all you germaphobes out there can rest easy. Veggies were kept very fresh, but can't say the same for the seafood. Love all the mushrooms, meatballs and noodles that were available, with my favorite fish tofu which I can't get enough of. It's convenient to just have your own hot pot instead of sharing one for the whole table. This place is located in the HK4 plaza toward the left side, close to Boone street. Spacious parking and you don't have to go into HK4 to get to Shabu. It's more crowded on weekend nights versus weekdays. The inside was a lot more spacious than I expected. Plenty of tables around. They do have private rooms with larger tables for big party. You will first pick your broth on the menu. I always go for the sukiyaki which a sweet but simple broth. It goes well with the meat and veggies. It's also a favorite among the crowd. For meat, you will have to order as you go. For veggies and seafood, it's buffet style. My friend and I came out here last month for our yearly foodie trip. Houston has a vast Asian food scene compared to that of Austin and isn't too far away. The host sat us down promptly at a table. We both personally like the shared experience of hotpot, but this was a nice change of pace to have individual hotpots. You get to pick your broth and up to 5 different plates of meat to start off with. For $30 AYCE and a full bar of veggies, seafood, and a different assortment of carbs (i.e. noodles, rice cake, dumplings, etc.) this is probably the best deal I've seen for hotpot in a long time. The broth isn't as flavorful as a place with more of a pay-as-you-go menu, but it suffices. I think the star of the show here is the dipping sauce bar and the bar to grab as much seafood, veggies, and carbs as you like. I'd go back! So it's all you can eat Hot Pot. Like $25 bucks per person. The vegan friendly hot pot buffet is about $17. You get a lot for the money. Spacious and well lit, I'm talking like white lights so it's pretty bright. We got the SPICY ORIGINAL HOUSE SOUP, TONKOTSU, and SUKIYAKI. Out of the three, my favorite was the spicy. The other two were a little sweet for my taste. The place setting was very thorough. We had a small plate, bowl, ladle, spoon, and chopsticks. Saw a previous review where a customer didn't have a bowl. Perhaps the business improved and learned but I had no problems and had everything I needed. We ordered one of each of the meats on the menu except the pork loin, chicken breast, and lamb leg. The meat slices were thin and cooked fast in the boiling broth. You could tell that it was fresh and not frozen. I wasn't a fan of the server who plopped all the meats down in front of us and just left. He didn't tell us what meats were what and we spread it out on the table ourselves. Vegetables, seafood, and noodles are buffet style so you can get whatever you want and however much you want. They had a huge variety of different things to choose from such as frozen GYOZA, CRAB, SCALLOP, RAMEN NOODLES, UDON, etc. They also have a great build your own sauce station. The Individual hot pot is on the smaller side so be careful not to cram too much. They do refill your broth for FREE. It's a digital stove heater so you can control the temperature to make it hotter or just turn it off. They have fruit and ice-cream for dessert. One of our good friends wanted to celebrate her birthday at Shabu Zone. So, we came to check it out. Located in Hong Kong City Mall, this restaurant is spacious and modern inside with plenty of booths and tables. As soon as everyone in our party arrived, we ordered the base soup first. Based on the birthday girl's recommendation, I ordered the Sukiyaki broth. It was the best decision ever. The broth had a very nice beefy, umami flavor to it. Best thing was that I was able to have free refills of broth if I was running low. Now, if I had picked a broth I didn't like, and wanted to switch to the sukiyaki broth, I would be charged for it. So, pick your broth wisely. Now, the fun part - all you can eat (AYCE) food! There was a buffet station in the middle of the restaurant with all types of seafood, noodles, vegetables, fish cakes, sauces, and other condiments available. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I grabbed all types of fish cakes, udon, instant ramen, seaweed noodles, one raw egg, scallops, tofu, cilantro, green onions, and built my own sauce. Anything you can think of, they offer to make a sauce. Soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, sesame paste sauce, hot sauce, actual minced jalapeños, minced garlic, etc. Loved it. Now, for the actual meat part, you have to order 4 meat dishes at a time with the waitress at your table. But, it is still unlimited meat. It's just a little less convenient than drowning your plate with meat from the buffet station. The meat slices were thin enough to cook in the hot pot broth for literally just seconds. By the way, let me get back to the broth. My friends and I all had our own individual small pots of broth that we could control the temperature of at our own seats. We each had our own electric stove top burner that had a range of heat from P1 to P5. The latter being a rolling boil. So, if you want to boil your food to death, P5 is your setting. I loved this individualized cooking, because sometimes I need to cook the food really well, and other times I just need it stay warm so I can enjoy the food. This is what makes it so fun. The only thing I didn't enjoy about this spot was their dessert station. I was looking forward to eating their ice cream. But, most of their tubs of ice cream were empty. None of the staff decided to refill this station. Also, the unsanitary way in which they kept this station made me not want to go back for seconds. There were 3 ice cream scoopers to the side just sitting in a stale water container. This container didn't look like it was cleaned in awhile, and when used to scoop the ice cream, it left ice cream water from other bins into the current bin you're scooping your ice cream from. Just gross. I think I'd recommend they just have a station with little cups of ice cream that people can grab instead of scooping the ice cream from big tubs for themselves. Other than the dessert, I'd come back for the rest. Next time, I'm going to focus more on ordering the meat than eating the fish cakes/seafood. It's pretty expensive to eat AYCE dinner here if you don't take advantage of the unlimited meat, even if your have to order it multiple times from the waitstaff. This is a great spot to enjoy with friends and family because it's fun to control what and how your food is cooked, and all the flavorings you want to add to your food as well. Yummy! read more
