After eating at Shadows many times our last meal was last night. Our bill was $39.53 , I put a $50 bill in the little black folder that contained the bill . We waited for 22 minutes and the server never returned with my change . I asked to speak to the manager , never saw him . So I called security , they never showed up. I got the message , rotten food , lousy service , then keeping my change then avoiding my request to speak to the manager , then the security never arrived. My word to any body thinking about eating at Shadows restaurant on Avenue 40 just west of Madison DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Shadow Restaurant has gone down hill in the last three years. The food use to be very good but not anymore. Prices are out of line. $16.00 for a hamburger which is nothing special. The take out prime rib dinner recently thrown in a box, potato was awful, like it was baked in the morning. The meat was very fatty and sitting in enormous juice. The Shadows Restaurant not only provides really nice dining options - but also provides spectacular views from both indoor and outdoor patio seating. It is a favorite of most Shadow Hills residents - and it certainly is one of mine ... not only for the convenience, but also their specialty night menu's and warm service from eager, welcoming staff (many who have been with the restaurant for years). 1/30/19 I have been taking my patient here for the last few months, every two weeks. We have had great experiences here until today. :( Although, when we first sat down our balding waiter did ask us for a drink order and brought back drinks fast, hence the one star. But here's where it took a turn for the worse, it took him 20 minutes to ask us for a food order. Absolutely, ridiculous! I also observed another male server and a female waiter, ignoring us too and walking around cleaning tables off, serving food and drinks to people who came way later than us two, but somehow we were served our food later than others because the waiters were literally catering to everyone else pretty much, besides us. Even my patient, who has a form of Alzheimer's and forgets things she did and said within minutes, started realizing that it was taking an unusual amount of time to get any kind service. I felt so bad, watching her realizing we were being ignored by the staff pretty much for whatever reasons. We are never coming back here for lunch, we will be having lunch somewhere else with a more competent staff. You lost a good customer and we will be telling everyone about this terrible experience with the balding, incompetent waiter you are employing here!!! Shame on him and the staff today. I will be calling their manager tomorrow to complain. read more

We stopped in for an early dinner (about 5pm) and had a great meal and impeccable service. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who seated us in a perfect window corner table. Our server Cynthia was very professional and just the right amount of attentiveness. She took our drink order, then our appetizer order and finally the dinner order. We had a shrimp/asparagus appetizer & calamari. Dinner was the lamb shank with pappardelle noodles & shrimp w/tomatoes & cream sauce. Cynthia made sure we had warm dinner rolls with our meal. Worst food EVER!!! My 97 yr old mother was served spoiled chicken salad. She was picking at it n I asked if it was good, she said no. I tasted and it was indeed spoiled .... Her French Onion soup was so salty and looked terrible we sent that back! Server came back and said the chicken was rotten but they'd make a new batch. I said no thank you...my husbands Roast Beef looked like a 5 year old put it together. Hardly any meat n the lettuce was piled high... my Tuna Salad was very dry, like they didn't put any mayo in it... the Ice Tea isn't fresh brewed and tasted like powered... they did take my moms meal off the bill. My mom left without eating anything because she was done with it... I would say the whole experience was enough to never go back... she's been living their for 15 years and it was never like that... I feel who ever the cooked needs to go... sorry for having to write this. I usually don't but the spoiled rotten chicken should NEVER have been served. It's a blessing she didn't eat it all or there might have been a problem.... read more

I don't live in Sun City Shadow Hills, but I saw their take out menu and decided to try the "Ultimate Reuben". Boy, is it fantastic! I love Reubens, and I've tried them at many places around town like Sherman's and Louise's Pantry, but honestly nothing compares to the reuben sandwich served up by The Shadows restaurant at Shadow Hills golf course. It's huge in size, and stacked high with lean corned beef and tasty sauerkraut, then grilled to perfection on thick rye bread. Served steaming hot to go! I wish I found this place years ago! This is heaven for any Reuben lover! I believe it's the best reuben sandwich in all of Coachella valley . Last night...friends attended the Fish Dinner ...It was fabulous..Chef Jeff did a wonderful job...wonderful crab cakes...delicious twice baked potatoes...and veggies...and of course, great bread and fabulous deserts. They have come such a long way from the time that I moved to SCSH to now,,,they are really a terrific destination dining point. Terrible!! I ordered a french tip sandwich and the color of the meat looked like turkey and tasted like rubber!!! Could mot eat and gave back to server and asked she report it to the person in charge of the kitchen. Never a word about it,, they didn't care! We are year-round residents and decided to try The Shadows out for breakfast on Sunday. The place was about half full, so not too busy. We ate on the patio. Service was very good and the food was excellent. Only a couple of complaints: Coffee was very weak, they brought out hash browns instead of home potatoes on my wife's plate and the over medium egg was more like over easy. The biggest problem was the wait for our food to arrive. No lie, it was 40 minutes. 40 minutes! Crazy. With that said, we will give it another try as the atmosphere was nice and the food was excellent. read more

Shadows is absolutely great for lunch. Sandwiches, salads, soup...everything. It's a terrific (and reasonable) place during the day. At night they try and turn it into a restaurant, this is where it fails badly and is below mediocre. White tablecloths isn't enough to provide atmosphere (they never heard of candles or flowers) and the food is one step above a coffee shop. Not terrible, just way below what it aspires to be. So i'm 5 stars for lunch and barely 2 for dinner. read more

Service I'm finding is disjointed and confused. My order Blt on toasted sour dough bread, toasted well with a side of Cole slaw. I am reviewing the Thanksgiving buffet at Shadows. It was just mediocre. It certainly was not worth $38.00. Nothing tasted home made. It seemed like everything was purchased at Costco and just warmed up. The previous year the buffet was better. That year the salad bar had many different salads to go with the lettuce salad. Also the desserts were nothing special. Also the coffee and iced teas were not included! My whole family was very disappointed. This place needs major improvements! read more

Some things don't change for the good. Don't waste your time and money here. The menu is very limited. I went in Saturday for dinner, and the only beef they had were the beef sliders. Each slider had two thin, dry pieces of roast beef, with no condiment. I asked for spicy mustard, which they did not have. My wife ordered the pork loin, because there was no beef on the menu, except for the sliders. After we finished eating, we saw the table next to us get a prime rib plate. We asked for the manager and asked why we didn't know they had prime rib. He said "Oh! Didn't the waiter tell you about the specials tonight? We have steak and prime rib." The waiter didn't say anything about a specials. As far as the service: when we were first seated, we were brought our water and bread right away. Then, we waited and waited before our waiter appeared. We asked for more bread. It didn't come. When we could get his attention, we asked for bread again. Finally, the bus girl brought it. She said they were down a server because of the wine tasting in the clubhouse. For all this, they add an automatic 18% gratuity. There are too many great restaurants around to ever waste our time and money at this place again. read more

I'm giving it 4 stars for "most improved". While the HOA (we live at Shadow Hills - this is the 19th hole) keeps looking for the right management/operator for this clubhouse eatery, our most recent test run was much better than the past few experiences we've had there, which included mediocre food, horrible service, and a massive fly infestation. The new menu is ambitious and nicely priced with a selection of six different sliders, fresh fish, pasta (last night was Pasta Night, but we didn't partake) and a bunch of other light (sandwiches, wraps and flatbreads on the dinner menu) and heavy entrees and nightly specials. As my mark of a good restaurant (when appropriate) is their onion rings, Shadows got a 5 in that category. My veggie wrap was a 4 and my wife's salmon was also a 4, with a point off for over-saltiness. Service is now in the 'over-delivering' phase to make up for the previous lack thereof, to the point that we could have used a little less of it - fewer water refills, fewer "how's everything tasting" visitations, but if that's the worst complaint, they're off to a much better start. Prices were reasonable, partially due to a long happy hour. I really hope they can keep up this current standard; the place is practically in walking distance and the view over the golf course and water hazard is lovely. Please don't screw it up (again). We'll be watching (and eating). read more
