I recently returned to the world of Yelp and noticed that a number of my reviews from 2017-2018 were taken down. Not sure why Yelp is doing this but I'm going to do my best to rectify the ones that I feel are important. So on to my old (and new) review for Shady Grove Flooring. Because I do have some updates to note :) Here is the review from before: Those of us who are new or existing homeowners know how hard renovations can be. Unexpected problems can pop up anywhere and whatever you plan as far as budget goes...well plan again. With that being said, Shady Grove Flooring was like a breath of fresh air during a very stressful time for my family. Aaron, the owner, was very nice and professional and did his very best to work with us and within our budget. He kept us apprised of every step and made the whole process of installing/renewing wood floors seem easy, when I know it is anything but easy. My mother and father flipped houses when I was in middle and high school so I know enough to be dangerous. Despite my eclectic "knowledge" gleaned from my eccentric parents and obsession with all things HGTV, I did have quite a few questions about my floors. Any questions I brought up to Aaron, he was quick to answer, and he did so in a very friendly, non condescending way. As a woman I have had my fair share of condescending contractors- it seems part and parcel of being a woman and being interested in renovations. Heck, I can't walk into HD a not be talked down to at least once. But Aaron and his team at Shady Grove Flooring were not in any way disrespectful. He took his time to explain to me things I do not understand. I have enough humility to admit that I don't know everything there is to know about wood floors and installing them. After all, I'm a writer. Not a wood floor installer. Shady Grove Flooring were very respectful to me and my family and I felt safe being in the house with them, which is also something that as a woman I have had my share of uncomfortable experiences with. In addition to his friendliness and professionalism, Aaron's work is unparalleled. To be frank, it is gorgeous! I have seen bad flooring jobs before, heck I have lived in them, and I can safely say that the work Shady Grove Flooring did for us was absolutely beautiful and exactly what we agreed upon. Picky Hubby has no complaints when it comes to our floors. And the pricing was reasonable and competitive. I would definitely recommend Shady Grove Flooring to friends and family. Okay so now for updates. Shady Grove Flooring is still as amazing as ever. I don't have them time or inclination to go into the craziness of every step of the install jobs we've had done in the last few years but I can say that SGF has been a gem each time. I'm super picky and indecisive with my flooring choices and even with the stress of COVID, Aaron has not lost his patience with me. He and his team used masks and were very safe when they worked for us during the pandemic, which is good. We had some sub flooring issues where the builders cheaped out on the grout for our bathroom floor. The tile cracked and then there was a giant hole to the crawl space where years of standing water literally ate away at the floor. Aaron fixed the subflooring and gave us a great tile guy to come fix the floors in the bathroom. No more hole in our bathroom or our wallets! Yay Aaron! Yay Shady Grove Flooring! Yay us! PS- the pics show the floor BEFORE SGF fixed it. I didn't get a picture of it after because there is tile over it and well my phone isn't an x-ray phone. Take that one up with Apple. My floors are beautiful. I like that the owner was positive and talked through my concerns and ideas with enthusiasm. He made me feel comfortable and I loved his explanation of the process. I wasn't sure about my initial choice of stain and he put more and more stains on the floor until I felt absolutely positive about my choice. On to the review, our floors for the most part look nice but I think that's more because it's beautiful reclaimed pine than his installation work. There are fairly large gaps between the ends of some boards. He did not bother to trim boards that had broken corners so now there are boards with broken corners throughout the house. We asked him to sand the corners to give them a worn look since they had already been installed. He did one and refused to do the rest. In one, he put putty when we specifically asked him not to. The putty does not match the floor and has since cracked and looks even worse than it did to begin with. The floors that were taken out were rock solid, we just didn't like the look. They did not move or creak. The newly installed ones creak like crazy and if, you watch when somebody walks across them, you can see them moving quite a bit. You can also feel the movement as you walk across the boards. I suspect that he did not use enough nails or secure them properly. We also feel frustrated that we've had to get used to the color of our floors. We asked to see a sample board with the finish on it. He told us it looks the same as if you wipe a board with water, which he did. It did not change the look of the color much but made the grain pop, which is exactly what we were looking for. Once the floors were applied with the finish, they have a very yellow/orange tint to them that we've been trying to get used to. We've also had to get used to the pine trim around the fireplaces when we asked for white throughout. There were also major problems with clean up and finishing work. He left sawdust everywhere throughout the house. We also found nails, bottles with tobacco spit in it, trash, tools etc. He put gashes in our drywall, broke tiles in the bathroom, broke our threshold to the back door, and got finish on every surface from trim to banisters to kitchen cabinetry to appliances to tile. There are actually hand prints on our banisters from where they got stain on their hands and then used the banister. We now have to repaint the whole house (including the staircase and kitchen cabinetry), as well as pay somebody else to fix the broken items throughout the house. We had to call him back to the house after he said he was done to actually finish the work. There were parts of the kitchen that 1/4 round was not installed, there was a large portion of drywall caved in that looked like it had been hit with a hammer of some sort during demo, there was a banister not reinstalled, closet doors that had not been reinstalled and he left tools behind. There were other things that needed to be fixed after he left but we just wanted to get him out of our house. He seemed to be causing more trouble than fixing it so we resolved to pay somebody else to fix the things he messed up. We knew that he had reinstalled our bifold closet doors incorrectly because they weren't lining up properly anymore. I thought that was just a matter of adjusting them by the pins at the top and bottom so didn't worry about it too much. When I went to adjust them today, I saw that he didn't bother to seat it in the bracket correctly and the bottom pin was just resting on the floor. Now there is a huge gouge in our new floor from where that pin has been moving around when we open and close the closet door. We were excited to buy our home because it was finished and did not need much renovation beyond replacing the floors. Now it feels like there is a ton of work to do and it's upsetting to have paid somebody around $9,000 to create a ton more work and expense for us. There was also a discrepancy in his quoted price for a piece of custom work and what we were actually billed. We were told a turn board would be $30 and were charged $100. I would not recommend using Aaron because as much as he claimed to take pride in his work, I did not see evidence of it. He forgot so many things that we agreed upon that I felt the need to start taking a more hands on role part way through the process. The more we tried to explain to him what we wanted and show him the things that were not done satisfactorily, the more defensive he became. When left to his own devices, the work wasn't done correctly and when managed more closely, he got upset and the work went even more downhill. All in all this was a very unpleasant experience and I'm still finding damage that was done throughout my home a month and a half after he finished. read more

One of the worst experiences ever! Had Aaron the installer come back several times. No results floor was still humped up 2 inches. When floor was removed we found that no glue had been used on repairs and many boards with not a nail or glue! Wonder why the floor humped up in varios areas? No fastening techniques what so ever! Is this standard install practices because i know the installation instructions surely didnt say so! I had to pay $10,000 to get it reinstalled bc they definetly did not warranty there work. I would give a zero rating but you have to put something! Beware customers beware! read more

Honestly I had a wonderful experience with them! I'd recommend them to anyone. My mom needs her floors redone and I'm sure we are going to use SGF for her as well. The owner, Aaron, really takes his time to make sure you feel comfortable. I also felt like he took everything I said I wanted and anything I was concerned about, seriously.
