This is our second time this week we eaten here. The first time left us excited to come back. First visit we had your typical breakfast and the patty melt. I usually like to try out a patty melt with steak sauce or a chicken fried steak off the menu. Well thank goodness I ordered the patty melt. Rye bread was toasted to perfect with the perfect amount of butterness and the side order of cole slaw was sooooo good. The breakfast was perfectly cool as well. The hashbrowns are now one of our top favorite. Not greasy, super crunchy, fluffy inside. The second time we went, we end up having the beef vegetable soup with a cheddar grill cheese and a fantastic side of cole slaw. Shakers has that vintage 60's feel to it: huge picture windows, a long counter, cozy vinyl upholstered booths and a funky ceiling with all these geometric angles. Inside there were only a few blue-haired seniors catching an early dinner or a late lunch which suggested that I would get some good food for cheap. It's an old building that has been cared for and the baked goods on display looked really yummy. I really regret not ordering breakfast here because I'm guessing that their breakfast dishes are really great. I was considering having quiche but I ordered a panini sandwich instead. It was ok, but I was also curious about their potato pancakes. For some reason the service was a bit slow even though there were hardly any customers. The Parallel Universe Diner--where I heard a woman ask for bacon "al dente" a month ago, and where I had a patty melt last week--with bbq sauce on it, as if that were the usual way to serve it. Urk! I'm sitting in my oh-so-comfy booth for one at Shakers while writing this review--and decided not to wait until I got home to write it because let's face it: when you wait to Yelp, you never get around to actually writing the darn review. I've been coming to Shakers for about a year now, and it's become my favorite place for late night dinner and early brunch. I've taken almost every person visiting me in town to this little joint and they all love it so much. My go to dishes here are the eggs Benedict (delicious gravy on the biscuits!) and the Cobb salad -- it's huge and never disappoints. I've had their pastas and sandwiches as well, and I'm currently slurping up their grilled chicken linguini. Yumsters! Parking is easy. I'm thankful for this gem of an establishment! I've visited their Diner on Main in Alhambra, too, which has one of the best burgers I've ever had. Go, Shakers! read more

The reason I am giving them 3 stars is because there was an Asian lady (I think she was the manager) who was yelling at all of the employees and it made my family very uncomfortable. I went here on a Friday night around 9pm. It didn't take too long to get seated but the wait to order food, get drinks and get our waiter's attention seemed like forever. We were all hungry and if it takes more than 30 min to get food out, there's something wrong. We ordered strawberry lemonades with real strawberries but I was only able to get my drink refilled twice. When we ordered our food it looked like some of the ingredients were sitting for a while. I think because of the lack of people visiting this establishment, they don't use a lot of fresh ingredients. Service was bad as we saw tables that sat after us get their food before we did. Plus our server would ask us what else we would need, we tell him and then he'd forget about us. Talk about service. The restaurant wasn't even busy either so there was no excuse. Parking is right next to Shakers. There's a huge parking lot there so you don't have to worry about not finding parking. The parking lot is dark so be careful. I would not recommend this place. Food for a diner was decent, service was...serviceable. But as soon as we walked in, a layer of fried oil coated my face. The open kitchen idea doesn't work for a place that serves fries with almost everything. Is this the same Shakers that I remember being on Arroyo until it was torn down for something fancier like the Hustons or the New Balance store along that strip? I was told it was always on Fair Oaks, either way, if you're set to eat at a place akin to the aforementioned places and has alcohol (wine & beer) including mimosas on the weekends, Shakers is your place. They've got a good hustle at this place, and I'm assuming a lot of these people are semi-regulars who know where to get a good Sunday breakfast or some decent priced, okay tasting food to cure your hangover. As it was, I was there because of someone's prior history with the place, and I'm cool with tradition, so let's give this place a go! The biscuits and gravy in question is served with a decent and dense biscuit, a big slice of ham of medium thickness topped with some "it's there" country gravy. The ham was good and not too salty, but I'm not a big fan of lots o' ham (humor aside). The dish satiated me, but I left looking forward to my next meal later that day. It was my mom's b-day this past weekend, so I was b-day detail. Shakers has been rocking' and rollin' with the bomb ass carrot cake for more than 30 years. Overpriced diner food, portions on the small end, questionable service. Friend and I went to Shakers for the first time. I ordered the blackened salmon burger, which was not fitting. The salmon kept slipping out; it was clearly not thick enough for a burger like how the impeccable Red Robin does it. The plates were small so they tried to cram too much food on there, giving the illusion there was more. It was uncomfortable to eat because food can easily fall off your plate. Fries were seasoned and OK, but not enough. Burger and sandwich dinner entrees are about $9 to $12. Sodas and Iced tea cost about $2.35. Desserts included their "famous" carrot cake and apple "deep dish" pie. Each slice will set you back $4 (add $1 for a scoop of ice cream). Portions again were small and not a good value. I would almost compare their dessert prices to robbery. At the end, the check came and they accidentally charged us for a coffee. I pointed it out; she took it off, but recalculated the cost and discovered it was calculated wrong in the beginning WITH the coffee. It turned out WITHOUT the coffee, the bill came out MORE than it originally did. We had to pay the higher cost. Shakers's ambiance is comfortable and nice, very much like a clean diner. They open late so that was a plus. Dinner for two came out to $40 after tax and tip. I would not recommend or return to Shakers. It's not terrible, but nothing worth Yelping home about. For a better value and service, and especially late-night dining, I suggest Denny's (REALLY, they have cleaned up their act and are pretty hip now with their late-night "stoner" food). Be sure to go to Denny's that are corporate and not individually owned (you can usually tell; the individually owned ones have no promotions and have crappy decor that hasn't been remodeled. The Corporate Denny's have hanging neon-blue glowing lights that look straight out of "Amelie"'s room). The decor is clean, both classic and modern with a high geometric ceiling and wood details, with teensy booth seatings as well as the bar. The place was hopping and some folks were waiting when we left although we were seated right away. The service was good and our coffee cups frequently refilled. I hadn't been here in years, yet in the last week I've come several times, both enjoyable. The first time, I had the Asian chicken salad, which was really tasty, while not drowning in salad dressing, which can be the downfall of specialty salads, more often than not. I got the half order, which was more than sufficient, and came with a piece of zucchini bread, which is yummy in its own right. They sell the zucchini bread loaves in the front of the restaurant, so if you've eaten some with your meal, and desire to buy a loaf to take home, you can do so before you check out at the front desk. You pay at the front counter, which is also where you wait to be seated, so just a head's up that you might have to wait a few minutes to pay while someone gets seated first. It's the reason I removed a star. They should have someone committed to taking payments, in order to open the space up to waiting people, and for efficiency's sake. When we walked in it wasn't busy, they had around 4 tables of people, yet no one acknowledged us. Finally some guy passed by and told us to go ahead and sit where ever we wanted. So we sit down and watch for 10 min as people coming in after us were escorted to their seats, given menus and were beginning to have their orders taken. Finally, I decide to get up and find some menus of our own. I guess because we had menus in our hand it unveiled our invisibility cloaks and they realized we were there. Waitress tried saying no one told her we were there...ok completely oblivious that u walked passed us at least 4 times. Got a cup of water and the cups were so old and beyond cleaning. If you like undercooked pork sausage and waiting an hour for food.....this is the place for you! We were able to be seated right away even though the place was very busy.... But then we ended up waiting 15 minutes for our beverages. Placed our breakfast order for their country breakfast of biscuits and gravy with regular pork sausage instead of turkey sausage. It took them 45 minutes to get the food to us....we cut in to it and discovered the pork sausage was not cooked all the way through (gross). Flagged down the waitress and showed her - her reply was "oh you don't think that's cooked enough?" -----ummmmm NO, it is pork and it was still bright pink/red in the middle - most certainly NOT cooked through. Sent it back and we did not get our cooked food for another 20 - 30 minutes! And this time they REALLY cooked the sausage to the point it was almost crispy! At this point we are hungry and getting full on coffee so we just ate the food. When I went to the front counter to pay the bill they asked how my meal was so I told him it took forever to get my food and it was not cooked correctly....his response was "it happens". What should happen is some customer service instruction. Needless to say we will not be returning. I think it get's progressively better as years go by. They have branched out opening Central Park in Pasadena & Diner in Alhambra. The menu's are very similar if not exact. We had thought about going to Central Park this morning (we should have) but were closer to Shakers so we went there. This is a go-to diner. The menu has something for everyone and usually things are pretty good. The only time I've really had a bad experience was on a busy Sunday morning. My food was fine that day, but several people at my table had some problems. I think the kitchen and staff were a bit overwhelmed that day, and I know for a fact that they had recently lost two of their most experienced waitresses to serious illness. However, they know us there, felt bad about the problems that day and gave us gift certificates for our next visit. The service is always friendly, and the coffee keeps flowing. Their soups are wonderful, and the zucchini bread is to die for. The only thing on the menu that I wouldn't recommend is the mushroom penne pasta. It's really solid, though they've changed the menu recently and got rid of the fried chicken. Breakfast is 24/7, and they have some great deserts and stuff like milkshakes. Thought i would try this place since i just moved to Pasadena and am on the lookout for places with good food at reasonable prices. I went mid-friday afternoon and the service was fine. I ordered filet of sole with veggies and mashed potatoes. The sole was undercooked and as i ate it i found myself rationalizing that the so-so wine i was drinking would likely kill any bacteria still floating around. The veggies were overcooked and soggy. I am 80% sure that the mashed potatoes were actually potatoes but am not 100% certain. I ate about 1/2 of my meal and prayed that i would not be seeing it later . I asked for a glass of purified steam water with a PH no lower than 10, without ice cus i have allergies, and the asshole waiter stopped to ask me "will tap be ok?" no, no, no, no,...... I got the southwestern chicken salad and i liked it, but they can add some freakin salad dressing to go along with it. Nonetheless, i liked it. This is the 2nd visit to Shakers. Good food. The waitress went above and beyond. Filled our cups up over and over. He had Coutry Eggs Benedict. Comes with the Country Gravy. My buddy took me here as a 'thank you for taking me to LAX' brunch.. right before I took him to LAX. The diner was very well kept, nice and clean, and seemingly organized. HITLIST: Corned Beef Hash with 2 Poached Eggs, Hash Brown, and buttered Wheat Toast - 8.1/10 I actually really enjoyed the large plateful of food. The poached eggs were a healthy version of over-medium eggs, so I cracked them open over my hash browns, letting the yolk seep in. Slapped on some tabasco and ketchup, stuck it between a piece of taste and lathered on some corned beef. DELIGHT! Was it messy? Heck yah! Was it absolutely delicious? You bet yo britches it was! I had to leave one toast and a few shreds of hash brown behind because it was simply too much food. VERDICT: Shakers was a nice, pleasant experience, but I'll probably never go there voluntarily by myself. By invitation, yes.
