Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice (DineLA 2026)
Joann V.

4 stars My first DineLA experience of 2026. The Canoe House is a restaurant I've had bookmarked for years and I just never had a hankering to go to...until today! DineLA has always been a hit or miss for me, so I'm happy to report that I had a good experience! For DineLA ($25), this is what I got: Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice: I loved how the tuna wasn't super spicy. However, the rice block was too thick to eat comfortably and I didn't think it was crispy enough, but I still thought it was super tasty. 4/5 stars Short Rib Loco Moco: I've never been a fan of the loco moco, but, today, I decided to give it another try here. The short ribs were really tender and I felt like I got a lot of meat. The gravy was pretty good to me. But, as an Asian person, I need a lot more rice that what they gave lol...however, it was already a pretty filling meal. I had to take the rest to go. 4/5 stars Chocolate Lava Cake w/ Vanilla Ice Cream: I'm not super into desserts, so I'm not the best judge of this, so I'll just say that it is definitely a chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. 3/5 stars There is a small parking lot on site and plenty of street parking. Service was ok. Decor was Hawaiian-themed and very cute. Overall, I had a good experience and would come back.

There are so many yummy options on the menu, I will defiently be back to try! My friend and I ordered the chicken and waffles; however, I wanted pancakes instead of waffles. The pancakes were ok but after trying the waffle I realized I should have kept the waffle! It was suprisingly flavorful. We also got this appetizer that had fried white rice and spicy tuna. It was sooo good to me but my friend wasn't the biggest fan.

Ordered: - Spicy tuna crispy rice (4.5/5): number one reason we wanted to come, loved the crispiness of the rice and freshness of the tuna. Sauce wasn't too spicy and perfectly complimented the amount of rice included per portion - Chicken tortilla soup (4/5): warming and delicious. - Short rib loco moco (4.5/5): generous portion size that was a flavor bomb with a nice fried rice base. The boneless short rib was super flavorful too - Pineapple upside down cake (4/5): Wasn't too sweet and loved how moist the cake was. The coconut ice cream provided a cool and fun contrast to the warm cake - didn't even need to use any whipped cream that was given on the side! Like a tropical spin on bread pudding :) Overall (4/5): Came here on a Tuesday evening for the DineLA course. There was plenty of parking in the front and back lot. The establishment was pretty quiet since we arrived early so we got our choice of seat and placed our order promptly. Service was friendly. We loved the variety of food that we were able to try thanks to the DineLA menu and everything was well executed - we walked away super satisfied!

Another pleasant experience at th Canoe House. If you come early enough, you can do happy hour too that's available in the bar and patio Their menu is so Californian with deep Hawaiian tendencies All the food is freshly prepared with quality ingredients. Portions are generous too. Prices are very affordable for the area too. The best dish is their short rib loco moco which comes with fried rice, fried egg and topped with fried onions. So many textures. The coconut shrimp was a little sweet. The short bib melt was good if you want the short rib without the gravy. All their fried items were so crispy without being greasy There is parking available in their lot which sits on busy fair oaks Ave Service is great. They don't rush you out but is available for all of your needs You have the beach vibe going on inside and outside

Yummy Hawaiian themed brunch please with affordable bottomless mimosas! My group of six were quickly seated on the outdoor patio and we all enjoyed our food. I loved my macadamia pancake! Servers weren't stingy with the mimosas either and our waitress was good at checking in with us. Would definitely come back for a group brunch!

The service was so nice. I saw the Bacon & Bleu burger on yelp but it wasn't on the menu. I asked the server about it and she had it made for me!! It was DELICIOUS!! I learned blue cheese definitely belongs on burgers. The place is nice too. My dad LOVES their hawaiian fried rice. Also, not pictured but we got the crispy asparagus fries and they were SO GOOD!! We asked for extra sauces w it and the server was happy to give it to us :)

Great food here tastes like a nice home cooked meal. Very generous portions, I cannot get enough of the short rib loco moco. They have a few great classic beers on taps and pitchers available. The service is quick and fast from order to food on the table felt like 15 mins or less for my party if 16! I did not grab names but our one server and one assistant server did not let any waters of coffees run empty. The ambiance feels almost like a mom & pop restaurant friendly staff and big smiles all around. They really go the extra mile I have gone here quite a few times and I felt compelled to leave this review. Strongly recommend Mac & cheese and short rib but they have other great Hawaiian classics. I have not had anything bad in this menu yet! I will definitely be returning my next stop is for brunch!

We had such a great time at Canoe house! We went for thirsty Thursday and they had happy hour prices for their beers all night. The happy hour brussels sprouts were very crispy and their burgers and fries were so good too! The gentleman at the bar took great care of us all night and all the staff we interacted with were very friendly too. I was able to park in their parking lot but there is street parking around as well. Will come back again for more happy hour fun!

This is a perfect spot for a classic American-style breakfast. It's usually quick to get seated, though weekends can get a little busy. The theme inside is very Hawaiian with cute booths that make the space feel welcoming. The food was good, we had their breakfast omelets and macadamia pancakes, which were delicious! Unfortunately the previous times we came it has always been great service but this time the experience fell short due our server. From the start, our server, Jayda (or Jada), was very dry and short with us when taking our orders. She forgot to bring out our side order and the extra spread we requested, and there were no check-ins at all throughout our meal. Every time she passed by, she avoided eye contact, which made it frustrating when we were trying to get her attention to pay. Eventually, we had to go to the hostess stand to ask for our check. When our server finally came over, she seemed bothered and just handed us the bill without a word. Maybe she was having a rough day, but overall the service came across as inattentive, dismissive, and unwelcoming, which really took away from what could have been a great experience.

I had lunch here today for DineLA. I arrived just before lunch at 11:30am. Just a few others before me. We were all greeting by a very nice smiling Host/Server named Tiffany. It was a bright sunny day and I opted to eat at the outside patio. The food came out quickly by different friendly staff. The food was very tasty and I got a little Hawaiian vibe with the decor and food. Restaurant is clean and inviting. Do order the Hawaiian Fried Rice. The Loco Moco looked good also. Don't forget to get the Pineapple Upside Down Cake for a delicious Dessert. Say hi to Tiffany and the friendly staff. Parking: a small lot and street parking available. Obey any parking restrictions. Rating: 5 Stars

Loco Moco so good.

My first time at Canoe House, and wow--the ambiance is absolutely on point! It instantly gave me Hawaii vibes, like I had actually been transported there. The food was outstanding--everything tasted fresh and full of flavor. My absolute favorite was the Mac N Cheese topped with BBQ pulled pork--comfort food perfection. The short rib loco moco was also delicious, and the Hawaiian fried rice did not disappoint. Service was attentive and friendly, which really added to the experience. I'm already looking forward to going back--especially for Mai Tai Mondays! Definitely a spot I'll be returning to again.

I met up with friends recently at this restaurant. We had great service, good food and drinks (save room for dessert). The decor was Hawaiian style with tropical drinks. Thank goodness for Yelp friends that discover these places I didn't know about. This cute Tiki bar was a real treat! We are able to get a circular booth and could see and hear everyone in our group. MENU HIGHLIGHTS: -Loco Moco with Short Rib -Spicy Tuna with fried rice. -Fish and Chips -Herb Crusted Mahi Mahi -Sesame Teriyaki Salmon -Kalua Pork w/rice/black beans -Hawaiian Fried Rice -Aloha Fish Tacos (I chose Gazpacho soup for my side dish) -Pineapple Upside-down Cake with ice cream They open at 9AM for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Lunch begins at 11:30 - Monday through Friday. Breakfast menu is available for week day lunch too. Note: Online orders and delivery available through Door Dash. We had an enjoyable evening, The service was top notch, Im sure you'll love it too. Don't forget to tell'em that Rosemary sent ya!!

Saw them part of dineLA , and a Hawaiin restaurant seemed cool to try. Came on a Sunday evening for a date night. Service was good. Appetizers were good spicy tuna on rice was great. Pork tacos were good, the short rib locco moco even better . Desserts were great , boysenberry cobbler was better than expected. Prices were reasonable on the menu, worth visiting. Not a fancy restaurant, but quite solid. Overall I would say 4-4.25

Ask the Community - Canoe House

When are the bottomless mimosas?

For weekend brunch- Saturday and Sunday up until 2pm to purchase with a meal; and the bottomless mimosas have a 2 hour limit. It's still plenty of time for drinking with a friend or a party. Enjoy!

Anyone know if breakfast is all day?

I believe breakfast is only on weekends and until 2 pm. At least that is when bottomless mimosas stop :P

There's a parking lot dedicated to the big shopping plaza that Yard House is located in. They have a 90 minute free parking with validation. My group and I went around 3:30 and there were a lot of people seated and waiting for seats. Although their restaurant is pretty big, the hostess did mention that they only had 3 waiters working so a lot of sections were closed off. We were seated within 10 minutes of waiting. We browsed the happy hour menu and ordered pretty quickly after sitting down. Our food all came out one by one. It was pretty decent for the price. We ordered 3 appetizers and the total came out to be ~$35. Appetizers: Poke Nachos (7.4/10): There's a good amount of tuna fish layered on top of the nachos. I really liked the wonton chips they use for this dish since it's a lot lighter than a regular tortilla chip. There's three different types of sauce that they drizzle on top for the nachos. There's a good amount of sweetness and spice between all the sauces. I just wish there were more fish and avocados. Chicken Tenders and Fries (7/10): This one is just your average chicken tenders with fries. It came with 5 tenders and a small basket of fries. The dipping sauces included ranch and honey mustard. This wasn't the same honey mustard I was used to and it had a sour taste to it. The chicken was crispy and had good seasoning in the batter. The fries weren't that good. It was soggy and didn't have any crisp to it. Chicken Nachos (6/10): This one was a heavy on the stomach dish. There's two different types of salsa, cheese, beans, and then a scoop of guac and sour cream in the middle. They used a tortilla chip instead of wonton chips for this dish. Everything felt like a mouthful.

It was a great place for some casual, mildly literary drinking on a Thursday night. The bar was in an alley, and I was happy to find free, easy street parking right outside the alley entrance. The alley was well lit enough that it didn't feel sketchy, though if I were inclined to beat someone up, this would probably be a convenient place to do it. The space was slightly below ground, down a flight of stairs from the alley. It felt like an Irish pub/sports bar with a tap list of California beers in addition to Coors Light and Guinness. Service was friendly and reasonably fast. I had a Made West Hazy IPA and a Pizza Port Amber, both of which I've had and enjoyed several times in several places over the years. I also ate some fries that were lying around, probably but not certainly by someone I at least sort of know. They weren't bad. I live kind of far from Pasadena and T. Boyle's isn't a destination bar, but I'd come back for another round or two after Vroman's. It's a comfortable spot with good draft beer, where you can relax and have some conversations.

This was one of our favorite places in pre-pandemic Pasadena. We had some "could have been better"…read moreexperiences during the awkward period of reopening several years ago, but since then it seems to have mostly hit its stride. Overall, our recent experiences have been solid. It's always great when an "old favorite" still feels like a good value. I miss some of the menu items like the lentil shepherd's pie, but we have very much enjoyed the hearty English breakfast. They also have a good selection of European beers on tap. Service has been friendly, but it is lightly staffed and pretty slow, so it's not a good place if you are in a hurry. They don't keep an eye on the patio, so if you sit out there, it's best to go inside and let them know. They also seem to have more rules than before - but I have to imagine these have come from experience. I don't think this is an ideal place to go with a large group. If it's a quiet night you might be able to pull tables together long-ways, but most tables seem ideal for 2-4. We come with our dog and sit on the patio when it isn't busy. The dog meals are massive (more food than ours eats in a whole day and she weighs 60 lbs). It's a good value, but beware if your dog is on a diet! Overall, my favorite thing is that genuinely feels like a pub, in that you can just come as you are and take your time without being rushed. A good fit for both locals and visitors in Pasadena.

My best experiences have been when I sit at the bar (alone or with friends), drinks only. Even at that, the service has rarely been stellar. Sierra Madre is the exception as far as the service is concerned. Never have had bad service there. The other 2 locations.....meh! The Old Town location is the worst as far as comfort is concerned. Super cramped and claustrophobic. No elbow room whatsoever. The other two locations aren't as tight but still need better spacing. The food here is mediocre at very best. The traditional Fish and Chips equal 3 words.....soggy, Soggy and.....SOGGY!! Crisp isn't even in their vocabulary. Both, Fish and Chips are very under-seasoned and just very disappointing and unappealing. The "Bangers and Mash" are equally disappointing. Are you serious.....deep frying the Brats to "finish them off "? The flavorless Mashed and Gravy really seal this dish as a sucker's bet. And don't get me started on the nasty frozen peas that they serve. The British Curry is the best of the traditional fare and it is barely average. Desperately in need of flavor. I go to the East Pasadena location on New Year's Eve to meet a very large group of motorcyclists for a ride, but after 3 years in a row of very disappointing breakfasts now all I do is meet them there and ride. I mean, have you ever had greasy pancakes?! And the kitchen couldn't cook an egg to order if their lives depended on it! I have to say that they do have a couple tasty Burgers though. Not what most go to an "English Pub" for but pretty much the best stuff on the menu is in burger form. The "English" is a pretty solid burger, well rounded flavors and a big seasoned and juicy patty. The "Irish" is good too. I just don't understand the Swiss Cheese, why not an Irish Cheddar?! The rest their Burgers/Sandwiches seem very uninspired, something you can get in just about every restaurant in America! Do yourself a favor and get the Steak Fries (well done) with your Burger, not the soggy homemade Fries. I went this Sunday 07/05 with some out of town guests to hit up a futbol match. They wanted to watch in a "real pub atmosphere", and had heard of Lucky Baldwins on Big Bang Theory. There was 7 of us and we arrived early enough to get a good table for the match. The place was virtually empty when we got there but filled up quickly. We all ordered our beers, then my buddies unloaded on some appetizers....5 Scotch Eggs, 2 Irish Nachos (with Steak Fries, no Tomato) and 2 Buffalo Cauliflower (1 with no sauce). Everyone Loved the Scotch Eggs, they were grub. The Grain Mustard is such a compliment. The Cauliflower was very good, with a crispy breading and very well seasoned. The Buffalo Sauce added a great kick but the Bleu Cheese Dressing was not up to par.....watery and where was the Bleu Cheese?! Our Irish Nachos were decent but came with Tomatoes (which I cannot eat). I do have to say that they do have a great variety of ale and beers. They are a little pricey though. Go for the beer, stay for the beer, be mindful of what you order!
