Here's a review of our experience: Bottomless Mimosas: priced around $16 per person which was a pretty good deal! The staff is pretty diligent on coming around and refilling your glass whenever they catch it bordering empty. I'd say that they are pretty generous with their pours of champagne as well! Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice: The rice was very crunchy, which was nice! My friend and I really enjoyed it. Mac and Cheese with pulled pork BBQ: Big portion size! I was able to bring it back home for left overs, however, it went very quickly back at home. It was a really good dish. The pulled pork is sweet and the mac and cheese is very creamy. Overall, a very well-rounded dish. Ultimately, my friend and I would be interested in returning to the Canoe house in the future and exploring more of the menu! We were in South Pasadena and looking for a casual place to eat. We really liked the overall vibe of this place and the staff was really pleasant and service was great. They did have a happy hour, but it wasn't anything special and definitely not something you would go out of your way to visit for. My wife and I shared the Loco Moco and a side of brussel sprouts, while my son got the burger and fries. He seemed to really like his burger and fries since he ate everything. My wife thought the Loco Moco was just okay. I probably wouldn't get it again and that's why the one less star. We would probably come here again, but would try something different. DineLA has always been a hit or miss for me, so I'm happy to report that I had a good experience! For DineLA ($25), this is what I got: Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice: I loved how the tuna wasn't super spicy. However, the rice block was too thick to eat comfortably and I didn't think it was crispy enough, but I still thought it was super tasty. 4/5 stars Short Rib Loco Moco: I've never been a fan of the loco moco, but, today, I decided to give it another try here. The short ribs were really tender and I felt like I got a lot of meat. The gravy was pretty good to me. But, as an Asian person, I need a lot more rice that what they gave lol...however, it was already a pretty filling meal. The theme inside is very Hawaiian with cute booths that make the space feel welcoming. The food was good, we had their breakfast omelets and macadamia pancakes, which were delicious! Unfortunately the previous times we came it has always been great service but this time the experience fell short due our server. From the start, our server, Jayda (or Jada), was very dry and short with us when taking our orders. She forgot to bring out our side order and the extra spread we requested, and there were no check-ins at all throughout our meal. Every time she passed by, she avoided eye contact, which made it frustrating when we were trying to get her attention to pay. Eventually, we had to go to the hostess stand to ask for our check. When our server finally came over, she seemed bothered and just handed us the bill without a word. It was a bright sunny day and I opted to eat at the outside patio. The food came out quickly by different friendly staff. Met up with a group of friends here for our Cinco de Mayo dinner celebration and had a lovely time! Food was decent, drink specials to suit all tastes, vibes were chill and fun, and service was excellent - shout out to our server Mackenzie for taking such great care of us! While this is a Hawaiian-themed restaurant, we opted to celebrate here bc they have a variety of tacos on the menu as well as margaritas. It was a great spot bc it was lively without being crazy busy and overrun for the holiday. We made a reservation ahead of time and were seated immediately upon arrival. For our food, several of us got the Aloha fish tacos, some pork tacos, a moco loco, and an order of Parmesan truffle fries. I was one of the fish taco orders and I opted for the side of gazpacho which was a unique menu item. A sampled the truffle fries and they were delicious with a nice texture. The fish tacos were plated beautifully but were very bland and the fried fish had a strong oil flavor that tasted old so I wouldn't get this again. But the gazpacho was surprisingly delicious- it's a cold tomato style soup that tasted like a nice salsa and the large bits of avocado really made it a nice accompaniment. I also couldn't resist trying a side of their macaroni salad and it was a solid recipe - if you like macaroni salad it won't disappoint. Our table enjoyed several varieties of the margaritas as well as a tiki torch drink from the specials menu and all seemed to enjoy the libations. We also tried the pineapple upside down cake and it was a hit as well. For the hubby, I took home an order of the bow tie pesto pasta with salmon and a pineapple upside down cake and he loved all of it. The coconut ice cream that comes with the cake is especially nice. The decor here is reminiscent of a beach cottage and is really fun - the bar area even has a huge outrigger canoe hanging from the ceiling and beachy tiki hut bar vibes. I've been to Canoe House pre-Yelping days. It's a homey restaurant that serves Hawaiian cuisine and tropical libations in a casual environment. The décor is reminiscent of a Hawaiian plantation and the ambience emits warm Aloha vibes. Our server McKenzie was fantastic! (5 stars for her!) We started with drinks. Two Margaritas (Canoe House & Outrigger) and Tiki Torch, which was a special. Mine was the Outrigger Margarita, which is their version of a Cadillac. It was stiff and tasty. For about $2 more you can order your cocktail in a Tiki Mug. You don't get to keep the glass, but you do get an additional 2 oz. There were four orders of tacos - three Aloha Fish & one Crispy Kalua Pork, the Short Rib Loco Moco, a side of Mac Salad, and Truffle Parmesan Fries. Two of the four taco dishes were served with Chilled Shrimp Gazpacho and two with rice & black beans, as requested. Of course, the fries was my selection. They were perfectly cooked and generously topped with parmesan, which made them extra yummy. This place has a fun tiki aesthetic and it's a nice casual atmosphere. There's loads of seating. Thus far I haven't had issues with with seating. Staff are nice and helpful. I got the pull pork sliders with fries and the pork nachos appetizer. Both were pretty good! I do like their seasoned fries. The sliders were packed full of pulled pork. Great food here tastes like a nice home cooked meal. Very generous portions, I cannot get enough of the short rib loco moco. They have a few great classic beers on taps and pitchers available. The service is quick and fast from order to food on the table felt like 15 mins or less for my party if 16! I did not grab names but our one server and one assistant server did not let any waters of coffees run empty. The ambiance feels almost like a mom & pop restaurant friendly staff and big smiles all around. They really go the extra mile I have gone here quite a few times and I felt compelled to leave this review. Strongly recommend Mac & cheese and short rib but they have other great Hawaiian classics. I grew up in these parts and know that the Canoe House location has gone through several iterations through the decades. It opened as a pie restaurant several decades ago, I think called House of Pies, which were baked on the premises in the front area where the bar is now. It has been Canoe House for a number of years; I invariably come here for their DineLA specials, which this winter were $25, a good value for both lunch and dinner. Canoe House has a Hawaiian-ish menu, but also has American and Mexican offerings, plus a full bar with Happy Hour. They serve breakfast on weekends. The DineLA offer was 3 courses for both lunch and dinner, with some differences between the two. I had wanted to order from the dinner menu, but was I was 15 minutes too early. I started with their spicy tuna on crispy rice, a sushi dish with cubes of crispy rice topped with spicy tuna, jalapeno slices, green onions and a chipotle aioli. Tasty. I extra-ordered their crispy asparagus fries with chipotle ranch dip. Also tasty, but a small portion. My entree choice was their Hawaiian fried rice. It's always been good, but the Portuguese sausage portion seemed smaller. For dessert, I always get the pineapple upside down cake which was supposed to come with coconut pineapple ice cream, but mine tasted like vanilla. I had wanted to try the apple boysenberry cobbler, but that was only on the dinner DineLA menu. Canoe House's food has been consistent through the years. I love this place. To be honest, I used to not come here because my ex and I would always fight whenever we ate here... though in hindsight, it was definitely not the restaurant's fault. Anyway, I started coming here again about a year ago and it's SO GOOD. My friends and I always start with the appetizer platter. Fried asparagus is so good! I love the spicy tuna on crispy rice, pork tacos, and the hawaiian burger. For breakfast, they have great pancakes specials and even bottomless mimosas for brunchies. Yesterday was "Mother's Day" as we all know. My son and I were technically supposed to go to Olive Garden since that is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Glendale. You really feel like part of their family when you go there. However, I changed my mind after reading 2 pages of Canoe House reviews from different Yelpers. My son and I wanted to give this place a try. I wanted to try somewhere new and different, so we made the trip to South Pasadena from Studio City and found this cute, somewhat big, lit, cozy, quaint, beautiful Hawaiian style restaurant that had so much charm to it and truly made us feel like we were in Hawaii!:-) (and I have been to Hawaii). We were seated in one of their booths by the kitchen and in less than 5 minutes were greeted by our server Aubrey. She said hello and introduced herself with a nice smile and then instantly changed her attitude from being warm to being a cloudy, condescending person and made us feel very unwelcome & uncomfortable. And made me feel a bit upset. I wasn't getting that good energy/vibe from her and needed to talk to her manager Megan and address Aubrey's incompetent, rude, unprofessional, careless and carefree behavior/attitude and I quickly requested for her to be replaced with another server. I made the right choice. I wasn't going to let Aubrey ruin my mood, and certainly NOT my MOTHER'S DAY!! A very nice, professional, gentleman with a nice smile by the name of Ariel came to continue where Aubrey left off. She took our order, brought our order and that was it. Ariel took it from there. Being Mother's Day, she didn't even wish me a Happy Mother's day. I turned to her and said aren't you going to wish me a Happy Mother's day? And with an ignorant attitude she said Happy Mother's Day and walked away. I didn't understand what her problem was. She really needs a reality check and proper training if she wants to keep her job!! We ordered their Aloha Grilled Fish Tacos which came with a side order of Chilled Shrimp Gazpacho, which was a good portion to try on the side as opposed to ordering it as a separate appetizer. We also got their Boneless Short Rib Loco Moco which came with fried rice, 2 sunny side up eggs, fried onions, gravy, and a pita triangle. The last entree we got was the Teriyaki Salmon with Forbidden Rice. My son and I shared everything. For my drink, I got their perfectly made Piña Colada and we finished our meal with a COMPLIMENTARY dessert, the pineapple upside down cake with coconut ice cream & whipped cream that is a staple at Canoe. IT HIT THE SPOT!!:-)) The food was just beyond delicious, fresh, great texture, flavors that melted in our mouths and made me DROOL! Made to PERFECTION!! Loved it. Loved it and did I say Loved it?? Great portions and still had leftovers to take home. Ariel and Megan were very accommodating and checked up on us pretty frequently which I liked. Megan the manager, even brought freshly baked bread free of charge. Restaurant was nice, clean and will definitely return next time when I am in the area and craving some high quality delicious Hawaiian food!! I didn't want to dock a star or two for Aubrey's bad behavior, since this is a 10 star establishment, but unfortunately we can only give 5 stars! I am glad I requested for our server to be changed, and we made sure to tip Ariel more than 20% for his excellent service. The tip that could've been Aubrey's ended up being his instead. Thank you Ariel, Megan and let's not forget to thank their wonderful, well trained chefs that not only made my Mother's Day a memorable event, but a great dining experience as well. It's a kitsch mainland/hawaiian place that mostly serves fried comfort food. It was generally average. The spicy tuna on flash fried rice balls was mushy, as were the french fries. Went to Canoe House for brunch on a Sunday around 11:15 AM. Our food didn't arrive until closer to 12PM, but our server Matt was friendly and kept us in the loop. He let us know that there was a larger party that they had to serve which caused the delay. That definitely explained the delay, but I'm not sure if that's standard practice--like whether larger parties always take priority over smaller ones? Aside from the wait, the food was pretty good! The prices are a bit on the higher side. I've heard about this place since 2017 when I worked in the area but never really had the chance to try it until now and I'm glad I finally did. The restaurant itself is clean, well-decorated, and has paring . I would definitely be down to come back to explore more of the menu since we did brunch. While the prices are a bit steep, the portions and service make it a good value overall. If you're in the area, it's worth checking out! read more
