Stopped by for lunch and wanted to try their DineLa menu. I ordered the Brussel sprouts, Hawaiian Fried Rice, and chocolate cake. I also got a Mai Tai for Mai Tai Mondays ($7.75). The drink is a bit stronger than anticipated and I asked my server if she could add extra pineapple juice to make it sweeter. The Brussel Sprouts were good but I wish I had more of it rather than just the leaves. The fried rice was good and the Sriracha added a nice touch to it. The server brought out the pineapple cake instead of the chocolate cake and forgot to tell me that they ran out. I was kind of disappointed at that but ate it nonetheless. My review: 3.5/5 Came here for an impromptu office lunch yesterday. I had read that the last day of DineLA was yesterday, and because of that, I had to check out their offerings. The outside is iconic as ever; the outer decorations was one of the primary reasons I decided to save this place on my list. The parking situation was a bit hectic, as their primary lot in the front is extremely small. After we found street parking, we found out that there was additional parking for the restaurant in the back. Nevertheless, after parking, we went inside of the restaurant. The inside fit the theme of the outside very nicely, as both were tiki/Hawaiian themed. We had discovered that they offered 15% off of your meal if you're dressed in Hawaiian prints, and we all joked that we could have gotten a big discount! We sat in a booth and placed our order. The restaurant was fairly busy and there was one guy working the floor. I felt bad for him, as he looked like he was running around everywhere. However, when it took about 30-40 minutes for our food to come out, I started to feel fairly impatient. The DineLA menu wasn't extensive but it was a good deal for $25. Also, the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The brussel sprouts were good, the patty melt was equally good, and the pineapple upside down cake was also okay. The sandwich definitely needed something to cut the fattiness, and I opted to use the hot sauce on the table. Would I come back to Canoe House in the future? I think so, but definitely not for DineLA again. I think thats what made the restaurant busy. Either that, or they really need to hire more staff during times like these. read more

Hubs & I have been to Canoe House a few times and got to try their breakfast/brunch, lunch & dinner menus. They have daily Happy Hour in the bar area from 3-6pm. It's a Hawaiian-themed decor restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Their DineLA menu was a pretty good deal for $25, but I felt like their entree choices were meh. I like their Ultimate Kalua Pork Nachos, but their full appetizer (Pupus) version. (The Happy Hour version is a bit smaller, and I didn't feel like I had enough pork.) I also love their Chilled Gazpacho! Hubs tried their Short Rib Loco Moco and enjoyed it. I think we both didn't think much of the Salmon Skillet Hash, Teriyaki Burger, Short Rib Melt, or the Aloha Fish Tacos - all of their portions are quite generous, but these dishes were all a little underwhelming. I really liked it! It is a tiki themed restaurant with Asian/Caribbean/Hawaiian fusion. The service was really quick and the food was great. I went for DineLA at dinner. The spicy tuna crispy rice was good, and the rice was very crispy! The loco moco short rib was very tender and came with 2 scoops of their fried rice which I really liked as well as 2 fried eggs and gravy on top. For dessert I had the pineapple upside down cake with coconut ice cream. I liked the spiced flavor of the cake but there wasn't too much pineapple in it. I also ordered a cocktail, the lavender lemon drop martini. I think it was the best lemon drop I've ever had. You could really taste the lavender which I feel like is too light in lavender drinks other places. I will say it is a sweet drink but that is what I like for cocktails. read more

Visited this restaurant to participate in DineLA and also because my boyfriend went to school in Hawaii so wanted to get him some authentic food. We decided to attack the DineLA family style and share the first two courses of our meals. For the appetizers the Brussels sprouts were crispy like I like but had no additional flavor or glaze, they also came in the tiniest bowl (likely used for soy sauce or other sauces). The crispy tuna rice was good but also very small portions; probably my favorite of the night. For the main course I got the fried coconut shrimp which were also very good and not too" coconutty". I was excited to try Hawaiian fried rice but it unfortunately had no flavor and I also did not like spam which I tried for the first time. My friend and I both gave Canoe House a try one Sunday afternoon for brunch and bottomless mimosas. Here's a review of our experience: Bottomless Mimosas: priced around $16 per person which was a pretty good deal! The staff is pretty diligent on coming around and refilling your glass whenever they catch it bordering empty. I'd say that they are pretty generous with their pours of champagne as well! Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice: The rice was very crunchy, which was nice! My friend and I really enjoyed it. Mac and Cheese with pulled pork BBQ: Big portion size! I was able to bring it back home for left overs, however, it went very quickly back at home. It was a really good dish. The pulled pork is sweet and the mac and cheese is very creamy. However, the rice block was too thick to eat comfortably and I didn't think it was crispy enough, but I still thought it was super tasty. 4/5 stars Short Rib Loco Moco: I've never been a fan of the loco moco, but, today, I decided to give it another try here. The short ribs were really tender and I felt like I got a lot of meat. The gravy was pretty good to me. But, as an Asian person, I need a lot more rice that what they gave lol...however, it was already a pretty filling meal. We were in South Pasadena and looking for a casual place to eat. We really liked the overall vibe of this place and the staff was really pleasant and service was great. They did have a happy hour, but it wasn't anything special and definitely not something you would go out of your way to visit for. The ambiance feels almost like a mom & pop restaurant friendly staff and big smiles all around. Met up with a group of friends here for our Cinco de Mayo dinner celebration and had a lovely time! Food was decent, drink specials to suit all tastes, vibes were chill and fun, and service was excellent - shout out to our server Mackenzie for taking such great care of us! While this is a Hawaiian-themed restaurant, we opted to celebrate here bc they have a variety of tacos on the menu as well as margaritas. It was a great spot bc it was lively without being crazy busy and overrun for the holiday. We made a reservation ahead of time and were seated immediately upon arrival. For our food, several of us got the Aloha fish tacos, some pork tacos, a moco loco, and an order of Parmesan truffle fries. I was one of the fish taco orders and I opted for the side of gazpacho which was a unique menu item. A sampled the truffle fries and they were delicious with a nice texture. The fish tacos were plated beautifully but were very bland and the fried fish had a strong oil flavor that tasted old so I wouldn't get this again. But the gazpacho was surprisingly delicious- it's a cold tomato style soup that tasted like a nice salsa and the large bits of avocado really made it a nice accompaniment. I also couldn't resist trying a side of their macaroni salad and it was a solid recipe - if you like macaroni salad it won't disappoint. Our table enjoyed several varieties of the margaritas as well as a tiki torch drink from the specials menu and all seemed to enjoy the libations. We also tried the pineapple upside down cake and it was a hit as well. For the hubby, I took home an order of the bow tie pesto pasta with salmon and a pineapple upside down cake and he loved all of it. The coconut ice cream that comes with the cake is especially nice. The decor here is reminiscent of a beach cottage and is really fun - the bar area even has a huge outrigger canoe hanging from the ceiling and beachy tiki hut bar vibes. I've been to Canoe House pre-Yelping days. It's a homey restaurant that serves Hawaiian cuisine and tropical libations in a casual environment. The staff was helpful and friendly. However, the food was absolutely awful. We ate it anyway (wish we hadn't), but we were in a hurry and hungry. I ordered the Brick Chicken. Whatever spice rub they use must contain MSG because, today (the day after) I feel dizzy, upset stomach, my joints ache, and I have a headache. Last night, both me and my husband couldn't sleep because we both felt restless and squirrly. All usual after eating MSG. The rub was also dry, sandy, and extremely salty, so that tells me it's MSG. The mashed potatoes were cold and the veg was meh. In fact, the overcooked veg was probably the best part. My husband ordered the Loco Moco and I tried it. It was flavorless and dry. He told me it was, "not good." Someone needs to get into the kitchen and see what's going on. Also, don't use MSG for crying out loud. What year is it? Edit: Returned on Friday for Happy Hour. Same great food, but lousy service. We will think twice about returning again. Disappointed. This has a super fun Hawaiian vibe! Outdoor patio too. We found out that today was Mai Tai Monday, so we just had to have one. It was fantastic! I ordered the Kahlua Pork Nachos. They were huge! The photo is less than half of the order. Plenty of pork, black beans and toppings. My husband had the Big Kahuna burger. My dad had the California Club. Both large portions and very tasty. Finally checked this place out after many years of taking my mom to eat across the street to her favorite place. Decor screamed Hawaiian which I always like, and the menu at first seemed to validate that. Deep dive into the menu puzzled me as there was a lack of rice as an option for a side. Only rice item I saw was fried rice. Preferred the Portuguese sausage and eggs. It tasted good but it seemed that what other places would give me two sausage links, here they give one and they slice it thinly so 4 pieces looks a lot but not really.
