Creative cocktail and beer-mixtures, nice patio seating, small parking lot in the back, DILL-icious fried pickles! Definitely worth a visit for happy hour or anytime you want a relaxing place with good food and a great service.

Burger with gluten free bun! 2.5 out of 5 stars

Food is good! We have eaten here many times. Love the chicken pot pie the Shepards pie and the curry fries! Those are go too for sure. This go around I tried the burger with a gluten free bun. It was OK. And the service this go around was not good. I know good help is hard to find but sheesh. She was terrible ! Oh well we will be back regardless

This was like option three of a list of three restaurants I wanted to go eat at on a Saturday afternoon. Nothing here screamed yum. But I was overruled and ended up here around 7pm. Not gonna lie... the place kinda smacked. It ended up being a lot better than what I was expecting. I mean, it won't change your life but I can definitely see myself coming back here to try something else off the menu. There were two in my party, and we went with the classic fish and chips and a Reuben sandwich with no sides since the waitress mentioned that there's a huge amount of fries that comes with the fish. She was right. I ordered it with slaw and honestly that was my only regret. It was sooooo much mayonnaise and tasted as such. Ended up adding it to the Reuben and that was the only way it was able to be eaten. The fish wasn't too bready and the oil they used to fry it was a good quality / still pretty fresh because you could taste the fish and not all the other things that were fried in the oil throughout the day. We had a dog with us so we sat outside on the patio. The front part of the patio is for smokers and the other half is for non smokers. There's a ton of seats and even more inside. Inside was a bit dark but I guess that was the vibe they were going for. Bathrooms were pretty bad which is to be expected at a pub and both are unisex. We went with some classic London and Scottish beers. A Black and Tan and a flight of beer. You get four 5is pour. I used to live in London and the different beers definitely took me back. I appreciated that it only cost me 12 bucks which is pretty good for a taster. Parking is tough. It sits basically in the middle of a short block. There's an entrance to the highway right there so it comes with a ton of traffic and a good amount of noise. There's a lot across from the restaurant for parking. Some street. And a residential street behind it. Plan for at least 10 minutes of frustratingly looking for a place to park especially during high foot and car traffic times. Great time here and would absolutely come again!

My last review from 12 years ago is FAR from how I feel about Shakespeare Pub & Grille nowadays. The staff goes above and beyond and are some of the friendliest around. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. This is the only place I've ever seen my father *not* be able to clean his plate. The fish and chips are the best around. I recommend getting a side of curry sauce to dip your chips in. Their specials are great too and they ALWAYS offer a vegetarian option. Definitely look into their pairing dinners too, they are a TON of fun and the food is phenomenal.

    Full English
    Kari R.

Longing for the days in England and Scotland, we decided to eat out for a Full English instead of cooking at home. I normally make a Full English breakfast myself, but my hubby had been wanting to come here to try one. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. I ordered the veggie breakfast, and it came with a frozen veggie burger patty that was not appetizing. The potatoes were overcooked and hard, and we had to wait a long time for the toast. It was cold by the time it came out. The bar itself is nice, especially for a holiday or to watch a football game, but sadly we will not be back for brekki.

Longstanding San Diegan haven for all things British! Love the authenticity of this establishment from the traditional decor to what's playing on the tellies (Formula One and Premiere League, baby - you'll need to get your NASCAR and NFL fix elsewhere :P) and of course the proper pub grub. Portion sizes are fit for a king - a single serving of Chicken Tikka Masala (served with basmati rice, chips or a bit of both and Naan bread) will fill you right up with all that carb-y goodness to soak up the curry. My only (minor) complaint is with service - despite plenty of available seating both inside and on the patio, there was quite a long wait to be accommodated on my recent visit. A sign at the door read "Please wait to be seated," and so we did, but no one likes to queue when there doesn't seem to be any reason to!

Great service at bar! Great gluten free Guinness Beef Stew! They have The Great British Dip you can get with a gluten free roll - that's for my next visit!

It's hustling and bustling on a Saturday night. Service is quick though, and we waited less than 10 minutes to be seated. The establishment and decorations inside do remind me of British pubs, especially with the tight spaces and chatter. I tried the sausage rolls, Yorkshire pudding and gravy, and fish and chips (allegedly voted best fish and chips in the USA). Sausage rolls: The puff pastries were soft and nearly soggy. It would be great if they were crisped up a bit. The sausage itself was nicely seasoned though. Yorkshire pudding and gravy: the batter was light, puffy, and crispy, and it was delicious dipped in the savory gravy. I would get this again. Fish & Chips: For the USA, not bad. I've had better in Ireland and England. The fish fillet is very long, but it wasn't flaky or moist enough for me. The fillet on the dry end. The chips were good being a thick cut but still piping hot and soft on the inside. It came with regular peas, not mashed. The food was generally okay. If you really want English food, then this can satisfy your cravings. Parking is slightly hard to find as it is metered along the street.

Wonderful Guinness - nice pour and solid shelf. Additionally the house can was wonderful especially for the price (and they did not skimp on the pour). They had trivia going on Sunday night (a bit loud) but it makes up for it that you can enjoy a cigarette on the patio - you can't find many places that allow that anymore. Staff here is always very sweet and energetic- excellent British pub.

Shakespeare bar is the perfect place to watch F1 on Sundays! They had a full food menu when we arrived at 8am. We placed an order with our server and waited over 45 minutes for our plate. Everyone in our group who ordered at the same time had gotten their food. Apparently our waiter never heard our order even though she asked if I wanted an extra plate to share the fish and chips... She was a bit rude and told us we ordered with someone else but it was very much her. Nonetheless she immediately went to grab a fresh plate for us.

    Good craft beer selection.

What I liked: Great craft beer selection place has loads of TVs. They are close to the airport, They have an outdoor patio

Let me preface, we showed up around 12:30pm on a Sunday during Formula races. The wait - an hour and a half. We decided to go to check out the specialty produce store 5 min away. Unfortunately we were not checked out when I got the text that the table was ready so we were skipped. I checked in for a 2nd time and was told we still had our spot in line but weren't next. She said it should be about 30 min, basically once the race finishes. We decided to wait and get a drink. The place is packed, I'm pretty sure beyond capacity. Tables of people with empty plates of food just watching the race, girlfriends and wives perusing ig. We stand in a tight corner with our elbows tucked trying to raise our drinks to our mouths. You get the picture. We got seated about 30 min after our second check-in. After 5min of being seated the bf went and got us some menus. About 15 min after that a waitress showed up at our table. On to business: Drinks were good. I had the Original Pimms Cup and a Harry Potter's Butterbeer. He had a draught hefeweizen and a custom flight. The food was excellent! He ordered the Steak and Ale pot pie and a side of fish. I ordered the Sunday Roast Beef. The roast was tender and flavorful, the yorkshire pudding was perfect. The fish was really delicate and flaky. The pot pie was on point! We'll most certainly be back but we will definitely consult all sporting event schedules first!

    Fish & Chips (Lunch)

Say 'ello to some of the best English food you'll have across the pond! There are a few things English people know how to do right and that's breakfast and some fish & chips. We got their The Great British Breakfast and their famed Fish & Chips (which was voted the best in SD)! The Great British Breakfast was absolutely loaded! With eggs, Irish bacon, sausage, puddings, baked beans, grilled veggies, and some fries- this was a hefty way to start off the day. Super savory and decadent. On to the stars, their Fish & Chips were probably the best I've ever had. The cod was fresh and surrounded with the thinnest most crispiest batter ever. Dip it in a bit of tartar sauce and add a splash of lemon juice and you've got the PERFECT bite. It also came with a side of peas and fries. Controversial take, but I love thick soggy fries. These fries (or should I say chips) were unbeatable in my book. Pro tip: Don't miss out on the malt vinegar! I cannot wait to be back on a Sunday to try out their roast!

For a bar, that's not always a given, and as someone who doesn't drink as much these days, that immediately stood out to me. It didn't feel like an afterthought, it actually felt intentional. For food, I went with the corned beef sandwich and it did not disappoint. Hearty, flavorful, and exactly what you'd want from a proper Irish pub. The whole place has that classic pub vibe but still feels welcoming whether you're drinking or not. I ordered the sampler that came with smaller portions of the beef stew, chicken boxty, shepherd's pie, and corned beef and cabbage.i think the stew was one of the ones i liked the best, it was hearty, the meat was tender, and the flavor was good. The chicken boxty could have used a little bit more flavor to the sauce, it tasted kind of bland. The shepherd's pie was the beef version, it was not the best I've had but still good. I feel like it also could have used just a bit more flavor or some salt. The corned beef and cabbage tasted like they added nothing to it to give it flavor, so i was a bit disappointed with it. However, the corned beef was pretty tender and i liked the taste. We also ordered the house burger which we liked. I liked the flavor the irish cheddar gave it. It came with fries, which tasted fresh and we enjoyed. It's pretty dark inside, and it definitely looks older, but that's the vibe they are going for. The largest grossest bugger hanging out of his nose, he had sweat marks so large there was no need to lift his arms to see them. He proceeded then to do shots at the bar with costumers. Which again... I totally can appreciate having a good time in a good neighborhood pub. The floors were so dirty around the booths. The menus dirty. Just over all couldn't stay and eat here. Did get some good laughs watching a few very inebriated customers, had some good drinks and went on our way. Also, for it to be a "speakeasy" vibe, you could hear the loudness of the bar through the walls. It just kind of ruins the facade a little bit. Regardless, we enjoyed the novelty of being slowly admitted to the speakeasy on the opposite side. We were given seats and upon first glance it was a dark lit space with an old fashioned aesthetic. I was surprised to see how casual everyone was dressed- I assumed there was a dress code, but I guess flip flops made the cut ‍. It took a few minutes for our server to attend to us, and when he did you could tell he was slammed. We just didn't get the table side manner one was hoping for an establishment like this. Peeking at their drink menu, I found myself disappointed that much of their options had a lot of sweet or fruit juice ingredients. So, I went for their old fashioned. For the price, it was just okay. Another disappointing moment. In all, it wasn't terrible, but it just isn't worth the hype. Overpriced and mediocre drinks and a seemingly overworked staff didn't make for a memorable experience and ended up not being for us. Glad to have tried it...but look elsewhere if you've actually been to a speakeasy. This just doesn't live up to what it's trying to sell you.
