I have been searching since months for a good salon and finally decided to go to Shampoo JC for my hair cut. I took an appointment with Jorie. She is really sweet and her consultation extremely helpful. I reached 10 mins before my appointment and they offered a variety of tea/coffee to begin with. Over a cup of tea, I spoke to Jorie about my personality and idea for the hair cut. She was extremely patient and came across a bunch of options. We then proceeded for my hair wash followed by the hair cut. It took about 50 mins for the hair cut and hair wash. I was really happy with the hair cut. We had a nice conversation. Jorie also recommended a few products suitable for my hair. Unlike most places, she not once pressurized/insisted on buying them from the store. Everyone - from the lady at the reception counter to the employees are warm and nice! Definitely found my salon! Also, make sure you take an appointment beforehand! They are almost always booked. And your hair cut includes a blow dry! It really made my day! read more

I recently went to Shampoo JC on two occasions; once for a cut and the other for highlights before my wedding next week. Both times I made sure to book Maria. I'm a newbie to Shampoo JC but was willing to give them a shot because Maria has cut my hair for almost a decade now. The salon was clean, organized, and I really enjoyed the art that is all over the walls. As soon as I walked in, the receptionist greeted me and offered me something to drink. On both occasions, I've felt well-taken care of and appreciated as a customer. The young lady who shampoo'd my hair during my color was extremely nice and we had a very enjoyable conversation. She made sure to check if the temperature was okay for me and the products that they use are wonderful. Regarding the cut/color. Maria is an incredibly talented stylist who has cut/dyed/styled my hair in every imaginable combination during the time that I've known her. I prefer short layered cuts and even when I've been so busy that I haven't been able to go for almost 6 months, her styles grow out beautifully. I'm very excited for my big day next week and highly recommend Maria (and Shampoo JC)... I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair! :) read more

So I've never wrote an review before but here we go, I been here a few times and went to a girl name jackie, she was great apparently she had surgery on her hands and when i called to make an appt. They said she not in, so i called a few times after, weeks and weeks NO JACKIE! ok. why not just tell me she doesn't work there anymore! Instead they tell me to go with this guy Ramon,OK. well my hair came out ok. i got a perm and everything was fine. 8 months later i went back to get a touch up and my life was DEVASTATED! he put the perm in and had someone wash it out, i really didn't like the way the wash girl washed it out but ok..... As he was blowing me out i notice my hair was hard and stiff and ask him " whyyy is my hair like this and he said "ohhh its fine you just got a perm and thats the way it is" LISTEN I'v been getting my hair perm/done for a long time and NEVER has my hair EVER looked or felt like this. long story short.. I PAID $220 and went home with this hard hair, when i got home i felt horrible and i called him and told him im not happy he did however try to fix it BUT the DAMAGE was already done. After a few weeks my hair started to FALL OUT my edges was GONE! ( CLEAN No HAIR AT ALL) i had to cut it ALL OFF:(( I had his number and he had mine, idk but maybe he could of call me to see how my hair was? i just felt he didnt care or maybe im asking for too much ? its been a year and my hair is doing much better and its a lot healthier but still short and just waiting for it to grow back to the length i want. read more

I needed to get a haircut and they had an availability for the time I needed, so in terms of flexibility they were really flexible. The staff was nice and friendly. However when it came to my haircut it wasn't exactly what I had wanted. I told the hairstylist that I wanted layers with side bangs. He gave me straight bangs instead of side and the layers weren't done fully. Might have just been the hairstylist but I wasn't satisfied with my haircut. Outside of that it was okay. read more

My stylist, Maria was amazing! Not only did she give me the perfect cut for my face and the perfect long layers for my hair type, which is coarse and can be frizzy at times, that allows me to wear my hair styled or just natural waves. I have already received multiple compliments from people that don't even know me on my haircut. It looks great even in the mornings before I even wash it. Maria was wonderful to talk with as she cut my hair and made me feel very comfortable so I was able to enjoy this time which made my day better( it had been a rough one). The salon had a nice , warm ambiance also. I highly recommend this salon, but specifically Maria, who is a master with hair, but also with building a solid client relationship. I booked an appointment with Maria today, haircut, gloss and a bowl of color. As soon as I sit down for consultation, Maria would ask me questions about my requests then cut me off middle sentence. Maybe she had too much coffee( I saw her drinking some), she asked me how I want my hair cut, I said I wanted layers. She cut me off again mid sentence said gotta be careful with the layer some people cuts it really high and go on and on. when we got to the coloring process, I said i want a chocolate brown type of color, she said we didn't have time today because my hair is really dark and would take time lifting, which is true. But then she started to going on and on about why my hair would turn red/warm when its highlighted and researching the hair color I wanted to do. All and all after 5 mins of researching which i didn't ask her to do, she then told me the hair color she researched can't be done today, its for future reference. Now Maria I appreciate your research, but I didn't ask for a 10 min hair lesson on something I couldn't do today. Also, if you ask the customer a question please allowing me to finish, It really annoyed me to get cut off a few times when I'm actually the customer who is paying you for a "Service". I was looking for some suggestions, not being cut off or criticize on what I suggested or advise me on something i couldn't do today. So Yeah I was pretty annoyed and rolled my eyes a few times when she cut me off, and when she told me the color she showed me couldn't be done today. She told me I have to get shampoo first and make me waited at the hall way for a while, she then bring her coworker over who has not heard any of our previous conversations trying to tag team me. Maria then said I had too much attitude in front of her coworker, I then explained I didn't want to sit there listen to hair suggestions I didn't ask nor can it be done today. And I said can we just move forward without having another long conversation. Maria then starting to have a fit, she just seem like very upset/angry/unhappy. At this point, who wanted to get a hair cut from a hairdresser who is pissed, and to be honest the feeling is mutual. So I told Maria if its gonna be a problem then I don't need this hair cut and she agreed with me. Which is fine, maybe we both had a bad day and did't communicate well. What I didn't expect was, as me getting my bag and leaving the salon, she started to walking behind me and yelling out loud at me "don't come back to the store, she didn't need a customer like me." She wouldn't stop antagonizing me and yelling out loud so everyone in the salon can hear. Ms. Maria, I know we had a disagreement, but I didn't do or say anything disrespect you, you are the one cut me off when asking me questions and you are the one go on and on researching on colors that can't be done today which i didn't ask for. I was peacefully leaving without saying anything negative about you to any customer or people who worked there. YOU DO NOT OWE THE STORE NOR DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO TELL A NORMAL CUSTOMER NOT TO COME BACK TO THE STORE JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE CUSTOMER. you shouldn't be antagonizing/ yelling at me as a customer, especially when I'm peacefully leaving the place. You are not the bully/queen bee of hair salons, that is not your store and you should have some more respect and customer service to people who come to the store even though they are not your regulars. You thought you could yell at customers and get away with it and you are wrong. No one is gonna get yelled at for no reason and not fight back, definitely not me. I was trying to find a local salon that could give NYC quality service. Since Shampoo JC had the most number of reviews on Yelp, I decided to walk in and have a consultation with whoever was available - which turned out to be FRANCESCA. She was very nice and I felt like she really understood what I wanted done, so I decided to take a chance with this salon. However, she wasn't available til a couple of weeks out and I couldn't wait that long. She assured me that JACKIE was more than capable of taking care of me and that she (Francesca) will be there on the day of my appointment to make sure Jackie knows and understands what she and I have talked about and agreed on. A week later (3/29), I was back for my appointment. Francesca was NOT in the salon. I was disappointed but thought that if Jackie was as great as Francesca said she was then I have no problem explaining what I want done again. I sit in the chair and showed Jackie photos of the cut I wanted and the color that I wanted. I told her that I wanted a long bob, and pointed a few inches below my collarbone to show her how long I want my hair to be. All through this she was nodding yes, and even said, "I know exactly what you want." She then cut my hair in chunks and joked that she was done with the cut. I thought it was distasteful but just smiled. She then proceeded to cut off more chunks of hair (I thought she was done) and then -- EVEN MORE hair! This was when I asked her what she was doing. ONE HALF OF MY HAIR WAS THE RIGHT LENGTH BUT THE OTHER WAS CHIN LENGTH! She looked surprised that I was panicking. And then it slowly dawned on her that she cut off WAY TOO MUCH. She apologized of course, but the apology can't really make me feel better. I didn't have a choice but to have her continue and finish the cut (I'm not walking out with half short, half long, choppy hair) but to be honest, I just wanted to get out of there. I'm not one to make a scene but this is the first time in my entire life that I felt so upset/frustrated/disappointed/agitated about a haircut especially when: 1. I showed a photo of the length and color that I wanted. 2. I told her I wanted a LONG bob (how anyone can misunderstand this is beyond me) 3. I pointed with my finger exactly how long I want it, even saying it should be a couple of inches BELOW THE COLLARBONE. Then Jackie had the audacity to say that it was a MISCOMMUNICATION. I don't know what else I could've done to be any clearer! She then asked me to still let her color my hair. I refused because I simply CANNOT TRUST her anymore. This is when the floor manager walked up and apologized, asking if I would let the owner fix my hair, or they will give me a complimentary service when I come back, etc. Yes, I understand that they are trying to fix things but I am SO UPSET and I HATE THE CUT so much (TOO SHORT and LAYERS ARE CHOPPY) that I WOULDN'T DARE COME BACK. I really wanted to like Shampoo JC. I liked Francesca. Maybe if she was the one doing my hair, I would've been singing praises instead. Oh and I'd also like to mention that one of the girls in the salon (the one with silver/grey hair) was telling Jackie in a VERY ANNOYED voice, "She's done. Just let her go." (note that Jackie still needed to "polish" the cut) She probably thinks I didn't hear her. To me that just speaks volumes of how she treats clients. At least Jackie sounded like she was sorry and was trying to fix it. Though it still doesn't change the fact that EACH TIME I look in the mirror and see this HORRIBLE cut, I will be reminded of this AWFUL experience. Very happy with my cut by Jasmarie! I hate going to salons.. haven't been in two years. I just always feel so awkward when I go! My hair was getting out of control, though, so it was time for a cut. I haven't been to a salon in Jersey City before, so I gave Shampoo JC a try. It's a small little salon, I must've walked by at least 10 times since I moved to the area without knowing what it was. I was there for an appointment at 5 and they were right on time. I mentioned I still wanted long hair and I wanted layers and Jasmarie made that happen. Very pleased with the end result and she also gave me some low maintenance tips, because the last thing I want to do is spend time on my hair at 6am every morning. The cut and dry took about an hour. I had ombre highlights before two years ago and Jasmarie suggested balayage if I want to go with some color again that would be easier to maintain. I made an appointment through Lifebooker a while ago and was excited to visit my first Jersey City a salon. Unfortunately, my stylist was cold; she assumed I was a teenager and treated me like one until the end - when I told I her that I am a working professional in my mid 30's (I look extremely young). She says that she assumed I was a teenager, I would not be able to tip. The cut turned out to be a mess. I had to go some where else to fix it. I went to this place with high hopes after reading a lot of the reviews, however found my hair in bad hands. I had Alex, she's a very kind person, however I DO NOT recommend her at all. I had told her i'm very picky with my hair, do not cut more than 2 1/2" off, I want long layers, and I want side bangs. I even showed her a few pictures of what I wanted. After much gloating about how she works for vogue magazine and she's a celebrity stylist my hair came out HORRIBLE. I saw pieces of hair that were 5" on the floor and I have NOTHING close to long layers. My side bangs look like I have a mushroom atop my head. She paid no attention to detail or what the customer wants. Pick another place and pass this one its not worth your money or the time it takes to grow your hair back. I'm never going back read more

I went to Xtina a couple of times and really liked how she did my hair. Unfortunately, the last time I went to her she nicked my neck while cutting my hair. I know it might not be a big deal to some people but it really upset me. Needless to say I decided to go back to my old salon in the city for a few months. Recently, I really needed a trim before going away and opted to go back to Shampoo JC and try out a different stylist. I read a lot of great reviews about Harley and made an appointment with him. From the minute I sat down in the chair to when I left I felt rushed. I'm assuming the girl sitting in the waiting area was his next appointment and I had been squeezed in. My shampoo/condition, haircut, and blow dry took all of 18 minutes - I am not exaggerating.My hair doesn't even look or feel like it was cut. Set an appointment for a haircut. Showed up a little early and was told to come back later as they were running a little behind. Not a big deal. Came back and 15 minutes into when I was supposed to have my appointment, all of the stylists were still busy with other customers. What's more, no one seemed very apologetic about the wait - which makes me think this happens a lot. There are a lot of other salons in the area. Maybe give them a call and make sure all is on schedule and give yourself some breathing room to wait. read more

I started going to Shampoo when I decided to break up with my $150 a cut NYC stylist. It was a very hard breakup. We had been together so long but my wallet was telling me it was time. I had met a few people in town that had been getting their hair done by Cristina and I decided it was worth a shot. I mean, hair grows back right? Love these guys! I found my new go-to salon in Jersey City I previously frequented another salon, but was looking for a change as I'd been getting the same style for years. I browsed Yelp and saw Shampoo JC had a deal, so I bit the bullet and went for it. I read from previous reviews that said it's good to let the receptionist know the style of hair you have and the style you're looking to achieve, so they can match you with a stylist. The receptionist matched me with Francesca, who was top-notch, though I imagine all of the stylists would do a bang-up job. Francesca was super friendly! I rarely chat with stylists because convo and small talk seems so forced, but she was genuinely really cool to talk to! We discussed books and more books, films and TV shows. Being comfortable with your stylist isn't necessary but it's a nice perk to have - Francesca and the Shampoo JC crew were very friendly and personable. Now the cut itself. I told Francesca that my superthick Asian jet-black hair takes forever for me to fix every morning. I wanted a style past my shoulders, layered and most importantly, easy to fix every morning. She made sure she understood my needs before getting started. She showed me the length my hair would end up being, explained how my style would look and made sure I fully understood everything before getting started. That's something I definitely appreciated as I've been to other salons in the past where I've ended up with a cut that was nothing like what they described. End result: I love the cut! And it was exactly what I had wanted. The volume was reduced in my hair from the layers and it actually is easy to wash and go in the morning. And how else did I know Francesca did a great job? I received 2 compliments within the same week - 1 from my coworker, and another, a complete stranger. No questions asked, I'll be going back to Shampoo JC again read more

You'd think that in the NYC area, one would be able to find great hair stylists, but I've been consistently disappointed. I've come home in tears because a stylist cut my hair too short or another thought that a choppy anime look would suit my round face and body frame with man shoulders (like a competitive swimmer's). So glad that JC Shampoo is in my neighbordhood! I go to Athemia (cool name right? It's Greek!). She-is-awesome. I have long, thick (really thick - my best friend says that I'm a Chia pet: Ch-ch-chia!) black hair with soft waves. Athemia has always cut my hair the length that I wanted, the way that I wanted (layers framed around my face), and provides a pleasant experience. She doesn't rush when blowdrying my hair or complain that I have "lots of hair" (in that apprehensive tone) like others have. I pay $60 without tip (like I said my hair is long and thick), but I figure I've paid the same or more elsewhere and haven't been as pleased with the results. I have been trying out different salons in JC since I've moved here - and this one seems to be my favorite so far. It was easy to make an appointment - and you have the option of doing it by phone and online. The receptionist was great and she set the tone that you were really going to get you money's worth. They offer you something to drink , which includes beer if you're in the mood. Christina was my stylist and was straight up awesome. In addition to being a cool person in general, she is genuinely a good stylist. I'm not that good at always knowing that I want to do with my hair - or what would suit me best, so she made sure to ask the right questions to help me figure out what I wanted. I never had a stylist really do it that way before. I've seen episodes of Tabitha Takes Over so I know! haha. The cut, color and highlights turned out just the way I had wanted. Probably better. Can't really expect more than that. Also to note- I did get the great head massage you always hope for. Few things to take note of - they have a strict cancellation policy and they only take tips in cash. Some may think this is too picky -but I think based on the quality of services they provide it's totally justified. Think I found my permanent spot. read more

I've been to Shampoo twice since October and had Alex for both visits (and only want Alex forever) - one for a two inch trim and most recently to hack it all off (8 inches or more?). I've been to the Shampoo on the Lower East Side and thought they would have a similar vibe (they pretty much do, although they do not share ownership and I think this one seems less pretentious) and I liked the idea of being able to get a good haircut in my hood. Success! I got Alex randomly, and she is cool as hell. Like, someone you'd meet in a bar and think "that chick is cool as hell." That's Alex. I told her the last time I went I wanted to cut it all off, she told me to think about it and when I was ready to come back. I waited just over a month and we did the damn thaaaang. And it turned out awesome. It's a short cut (NOT A BOB) above my chin with tons of texture and edge, as Alex would say. When I got a trim back in October for my long hair, she gave it great depth then too. What's funny is my hair took a few weeks to adjust to the trim to feel right, but with the new short haircut, it looks exactly the same after I washed it myself. Superb. Prices are 100% reasonable $65 for a haircut, although they may range by stylist, not sure), they don't push products on you and they have later hours. I bought a product this time because I knew I'd have to put more work into the shorter hair, but I didn't with the last haircut and didn't feel pressure either time. Shampoo JC, you rock. read more

The new owners of Shampoo JC took over sometime in January. The salon looks very swanky, has a good vibe. I booked the appointment over the phone. They also have the option of booking appointments online. The salon is located close to the Grove St PATH station. When I arrived, the receptionist offered to get me a beverage which is a nice touch. My stylist was Francesca, she did a great job with my haircut. I got my usual cut - layers with side bangs since this was my first visit and I didn't want to make a drastic change. I like the cut and will be back here again. They have a good rewards point system for referrals, reviews, pre-booking next appointment, gift certificates, retail purchases, online appointments. Since moving between the East Village, Brooklyn, and Jersey City, I have been a haircut nomad for years, trying each place once in search of my holy grail: an affordable and cool haircut that I can style myself (with limited skills/time) the next day. Went here last night for the first time. I've lived in Jersey City for under a year, and wanted to try a local spot rather than go back into Manhattan. Came across Shampoo JC through Lifebooker and thought I'd give it a go. I was able to get one of the last appointments on a Sunday night at 6 PM. Alec was my hairdresser. He was running five minutes late and came over and actually apologized for it and then introduced himself. So nice! Since it was a Sunday, I had spent a chunk of the day working. So by this time, I had WAY too much coffee before going to get my locks cut off. Poor Alec was really patient and clear on his plan for my hair. He frequently showed me how much he was going to trim to make sure I was okay with it. (I must admit, I hate getting my hair cut.) He did a great job--so many compliments today at work! After the haircut, he made some suggestions for future highlights/ombre options, but wasn't pushy on it, which I appreciated. He offered to give a free consultation and suggested some google searches for me for when I am ready to look into it. I've gotten two haircuts here and was happy with both of them. The first time, Xtina cut my hair and the second time Amy cut my hair. Both girls were super nice and did a great job. Xtina took a little longer than I'm used to, but that's fine with me. Do whatever you need to do to get the cut right! Also, I have a slight wave in my hair, so Xtina took the time to show me how to really accentuate the wave and wear it out. I love doing that now! Also, I really appreciated how they were not pushy and really listened to what I wanted. Most of the time I don't know exactly what I want - I usually just need some shape added back in to my hair. But the last time that I was there, Amy really listened to what I was saying and I left looking like a newer version of me! Moving from LA, I'm used to the price. It's about $60 for a wash, cut, and blow out. (not including tip) I have no idea how much color service is. The place is small and the decor is simple. It's always a pleasant experience at Shampoo JC. I discovered the salon when I lived in JC and since then I have moved to Queens and now Edison, NJ and I still return to Shampoo JC for my haircuts. They do such a good job assessing your hair and your needs so you leave the salon happy. I always get a ton of compliments on my hair after I get it cut there. Next week I will be trying the highlight service and hope it turns out as well as my cuts! The service is a bit pricey at $70 a cut but it's worth it for the results. I went here after not dying my hair for a year to try ombre balayage. I paid around $200 for the service, and it took around 3 hours. Jasmarie listened to what I wanted, and did a pretty good job - however, at the front of my hair, around my face, there is a visible line instead of the ombre look I went in for. I think she'll fix it for me - I had an appointment yesterday to go back in - but the salon was closed due to the snow storm. Hopefully I can get this issue taken care of, and then I will love my hair 110%. read more
