I have been going to Shamshiri in Nortridge for decades, to savor their mouthwatering Persian selections. My favorites are their kabobs and different modifications (think sour berries) of generous amounts of basmati rice that accompany their entrees. The Mast O' Mooseer (yoghurt with shallots) is another of my must haves. Generally, I always get the koobideh kabob to go, but this time, I was in the mood to sit down and have some chunks of meat. I chose the Shish Kabob, which is advertised as grilled filet mignon pieces. The restaurant prepares it medium well and past experience revealed it to be dry and tough. So I asked for it medium rare, for the first time. The dish that came to my table had marvelous optics. The beef was well charred, had an intoxicating aroma and well distributed coloring amongst the seven generous pieces. But there were a few problems. For one, I could not comfortably cut into the beef without using excess force, and shredding it. I asked for a sharper (steak) knife and was told that was all they had. While the meat was juicy, it was extremely chewy. I even questioned whether it was filet mignon, because it did not look and behave like it. I was told it was. If that was the case, could it have been a bad cut? This substantiates why I am leery about ordering meat pieces. Amongst the other items, the thick creamy yoghurt did not disappoint. Same with the grilled onion and tomato. The saffron rice is always fluffy and abundant. The green salad was crisp and refreshing. Take home message? Looks like I will have to skip the Shish Kabob and stick only with the koobideh, if I am ever in the mood for skewered grilled beef. read more

This place has been around forever but this was my first time trying it and I was not disappointed. I stopped by for dinner with my parents who have been coming here for over 30 years. Kinda bummed they didn't bring me sooner! It is by no means a fancy restaurant but the food is incredible. Shamshiri, meaning sword or a type of Persian black tea, is in a typical, unassuming Socal stripmall. Nothing fancy and down to earth as is the food which takes its cues from the standard Persian repertoire, but done through a humble homemade filter. The portions are extremely large here to show hospitality. You will never leave hungry here. There is more than enough to take home for another lunch to save from cooking another meal. 0) On the House: Large Plate of salad of crisp, chilled iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber with a nondescript creamy, tart dressing. Pita bread basket. 1) Tahdig: Almost all rice based cultures covet the crispy, crunchy rice found at the bottom of the flamed cooking pot. Basically, to recreate this crunchy rice on a large scale, Tahdig is now fried Basmati rice. You can opt to order thickened stews to put on top of the Tadig. I ordered two that came in good sized bowls for 50 cents each...Such a deal!!! 1a) Fesenjan: A mostly sweet and bit sour thickened stew of mostly pomegranate syrup, ground walnuts, often chicken. Pomegranate symbolizes fertility, rebirth and life in Persian culture, 1b) Ghormeh Sabzi: Less viscous stew made from Sabzi which is any kind of green vegetables but, in this case, spinach, kidney beans, dried limes, and bit of beef. 2) Joojeh Kabab: Cut up pieces of bone in Cornish Game Hen seemingly marinated in yogurt so even the usually dry breast meat is moist, firm yet soft. Bravo! I just wish that some garlic, thyme, oregano, Za'atar, etc. would also have been mixed into the marinade for more complex flavours. Dry, nutty Basmati rice is the default, but I wanted to try their Shirin Polo which is a sweet, orange flavoured Basmati with candied orange zest, and generous amount of Pistachio nuts. I thought it would have been analogous to Canard à l'Orange or French Orange Duck. In their attempt to show home style generosity, the sweet, orange flavour was amped up to the point it became almost a dessert. A more subtle Shirin Polo would have made it a more sophisticated dish. Iranian Black Iced Tea: A richer, slightly stronger tasting tea than the standard wussy Lipton style orange pekoe tea. What lacked in awareness of the higher Persian cuisine, 3+ stars, was made up for by the inexpensive prices and the sheer volume of acceptable food presented. The food is consistently delicious and comforting, from the juicy koobideh to the fluffy saffron rice and grilled tomatoes, everything is flavorful and made with care. After 2 yrs decided to try again yesterday- ordered pick up. Things could not have gotten worse but they did! First: Presentation - Soltani $32.99: food did not 'look' inviting or have any aroma- I should have taken photos - the kabobs were laid on top of each other with no attempt to make an impression. The filet mignon showed no signs of having been char grilled and the pieces were not in any way uniform in thickness or size. The koobideh skewer was a rubbery piece of meat - very ugly and also lacking signs of char grilling. These 2 pieces might have been just cooked in an oven. Second: Taste (or rather LACK OF FLAVOR) Soltani should be a skewer of marinated filet mignon and a skewer of beef koobideh, char grilled. Both lacked any flavor A miserable compilation of disppointment in what could have been a truly remarkable meal. I feel such disgust for this business. We're heading back to Ali Baba where we've eaten hundreds of this meal and have never been disappointed! read more

For me 1 order is 3 meals already because of the huge portion which also comes with grilled tomato and onions and a couple of naan pita bread, butter and sumac seasoning and extra onion. Service is quick and fast as we always order over the phone and by the time we get there it's ready(we're a couple of blocks away) Their combo beef and chicken koobideh is the best. This is a Persian Restaurant in Northridge. It has some authentic Persian flavors but I can't say that I loved it. There are plenty of indoor seating and they have a table upfront where they put together the to-go orders. Not sure why they put it up front instead of to the side. Our server was friendly and gave recommendations on what to order and what combinations to eat together. I've eaten at other Persian restaurants and I really wanted to love it. The food was okay but not the best I've had. The salad was okay. The Dolmeh were good, better than I've had at other restaurants. We got the combo chicken and shish kebab and shared it. The chunks of filet mignon were slightly overcooked. The chicken was juicy though. I liked the colorful basmati rice but it could have been more flavorful. We had a side of Gheymeh Bademjon since we like eggplant but it wasn't as good as we expected. The sauce was good and we drizzled it over the basmati rice. My friends and I had an amazing experience here. When we sat down, one friend explained that she was gluten free, vegan and couldn't have garlic. Albert didn't bat an eye lash and assured her that he would make a special meal for her. Then he turned to the other 3 at our table and asked if we would like him to prepare a special meal for us to enable us to share plates and experience a variety of meats and sides. We ended up with an amazing spread of meats, stews, several rice dishes, salad and vegetables and took home enough food for at least 3 meals. And the special dinner for our friend on the restricted diet was indeed delicious and truly a feast. Our total bill including wine and tax and tip came to about $40 pp. Given the quality and abundance of food and the amazing service, this was a very reasonable price. We have been going to Shamshiri on Roscoe and Tampa since the 80's when we moved to Reseda. Same ownership and still rocking their Kabobs and service. Albert always helps us out, my apologies if I got his name wrong. Very quick and huge huge portion of food, if your not huge eater 2 people can share a combo plate. Their salmon, chicken, and koobideh beef is awesome and phenomenal. This place is a family favorite. Their portions are huge and their flavor is 10/10. My uncle loves to eat here when they visit the valley. I, now live 5 minutes away. So when we had fall the family over we were able to order catering trays over the phone. Everything was ready in 30minutes. I let them know that my family usually orders the Shamshiri Plate and if they could make some catering trays for 15 people - he estimated the amounts and give me a quote over the phone. Service was quick and easy - they have never disappointed us and will continue to be one of our fave meals. Here is why the 3 stars: 1. Chicken kubideh wad dryyyyyyy. 2 beef kubideh was ok. Nothing to brag about 3 salmon kabob was ok. Nothing to brag about when it came to flavor. 4. They give you roughly about 2 pounds of rice with each plate. Not sure if they were appointing us to feed the hungry? $22 to $25 per plate. I didn't see it being worth it. Parking is fairly easy, and the staff are patient especially in explaining the menu items. They haven't served Sabzi here since COVID; the hummus and dough though were delicious! I'm considering stopping by just to order a quick snack or simple brunch. The shamshiri came with barg and koobideh, and it should have came with vegetables and a roasted tomato. Whether the barg or koobideh, I found them both to be noticeably dry, a little tough to eat. Flavor wise, though, I think they felt "reserved" - not bland but not seasoned to their full potential. The rice, bread were tasty, and I enjoyed the tomato. I wish there were more vegetables - a roasted pepper or roasted onion, but definitely not a dealbreaker. read more

We've been coming to Shamshiri Restaurant for over 20 years, and in all that time, they've never once let us down. The food is rich, flavorful, and filling, with generous portions and consistently high quality. If you're looking for an authentic and satisfying Iranian dining experience, this is the place to be. We usually come for a full dinner, and our meal always begins with tahdig with fesenjan--crispy rice topped with a luscious walnut stew. It's an absolute must-try, but keep in mind that tahdig can sell out quickly. We always call ahead to make sure it's available. For entrées, we love the Shamshiri Combo, which gives you the best of both worlds: Barg (a tender filet mignon skewer) and Koobideh (spiced ground beef). Their chicken dishes are just as incredible--the Chicken Barg and Joojeh Kabob are always juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. On select days, they also serve Baghali Polo with lamb shank, a dish we absolutely love for its rich, herb-infused rice and flavorful gravy.
