    Veggie Spring Roll

I recently tried Old Saigon Vietnamese Bistro on a beautiful, chilly morning and went there for lunch with a friend. They offer a lunch menu that includes one spring roll and a choice of one main course for $18. While I found it a bit pricey, the food was delicious and well prepared. We ordered the veggie spring roll and veg pho, both of which were flavorful and satisfying. I was especially happy to see that they have many good vegetarian options, which is not always easy to find. Given that there are limited good dining options within Steiner, this place is very convenient. A nice touch at the end of the meal was their complimentary spoon brûlée, which was a pleasant surprise and a great way to finish lunch. Old Saigon Vietnamese Bistro is a lovely spot if you're craving comforting, flavorful Vietnamese food. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming, making it a great place for both a relaxed meal and a casual outing with family. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try more dishes next time.

5 stars for the Pho alone. The Pho was flavorful and savory. It was very much like the ones we had in Vietnam. The portion is massive with plenty of noodles and beef. The chicken curry was also tasty. Service was very friendly.

I love this place because the staff is so friendly. Everyone greeted us when we walked in and the hostess seemed interested in asking about our day. For dinner we had their fried egg rolls and the shaken beef, which seems to be one of their specialties. It was very flavorful and delicious! Then on the way out we got a nice little bottle of wine as a gift for being new customers! We definitely will come back when we're in the area.

The friendliest staff and owner. We had shaken beef and it was so tender and delicious. Presentation was beautiful. Their egg rolls were also super tasty and full of meat! The place is cute and has an aquarium in the back. If we lived closer, we'd be here a lot!

AMAZING place!! Been one of my solid choices for great quality food in the Steiner ranch area. I love it here and the service is always top notch! It's a family run business and the place is always so beautifully decorated! I always feel so welcomed here and taken care of like family. Highly recommend!

Probably the best Vietnamese food we've ever had! My wife and I went in for dinner tonight and were incredibly impressed with both the atmosphere and the food. We got shrimp spring rolls for an appetizer and they were delicious! For our meals, my wife ordered the shrimp vermicelli and I ordered the shaken chicken wok. From the moment the food hit our mouths, we were in heaven! The sauce on the shaken chicken wok was smokey with a slight sweet taste. My wife mentioned this is probably the best vermicelli she's ever had even outside of New York City. Afterwards, we were offered their crème brûlée. To say it instantly melted in our mouths would be an understatement. It was perfectly cooked with a slight crunchy glaze. The atmosphere inside was calming and beautiful. Soft, soothing music accompanied the stunning visuals of each of the hand, painted murals. Don't forget to check out the outside koi pond! I simply cannot express how amazing Old Saigon is! Both Liem and Jen, along with their children Chrissy and Alex, and staff have done an incredible job with this new edition to the Steiner food community!

Great vibe with comfy booths. Last night I shared the Beef Lemongrass (plenty for two). Tonight I had the Duck Curry. Not very spicy with red peppers and delicious grilled pineapple! Both nights the meal ended with a surprise taste of complimentary Crème Brûlée. Perfect restaurant for a family gathering or birthday dinner!

Family owned and they definitely thought of everything from ambiance to fresh flavorful food! Loved the plants, fish tank and calm background music. Easy place for conversation, and the staff is super friendly and attentive. They went out of their way for our peanut allergy and surprised us with a taste of their creme brûlée. Ordered the crab spring rolls, Shaken Beef and specialty Pho. All excellent and had plenty extra to take home! Will definitely come back and look forward to trying more of their dishes! A true gem nestled in the middle of Steiner Ranch neighborhood.

Nice and crispy. The good old Hot Spicy Stew #25: 5/5 still incredibly filling and they're so generous with meats! There were water, bowls, utensils, and sauces in the lobby for anyone to grab, which was nice. We ordered their cucumber salad, beef noodle soup, and lamb noodle soup. Cucumber salad was 2/5. It wasn't the authentic smashed cucumber salad, the flavor was missing something, and I mean, for $7 or $8, you would think it would be amazing....it's not. Pretty disappointing, I'd much rather have my sister's over these. Beef noodle soup was meh. Nothing special. Broth was very simple, like they just added salt and that's it. Meat was cooked very well. My soup came with 1 piece of lettuce, weird.. Lamb noodle soup was the same as the beef noodle soup; it did come with the black fungus, seaweed, tofu, and some vermicelli clear noodles, along with their handmade noodles. Made sense why it was only $13.95 for the noodle soups. It's reasonably priced probably due to not being authentic, though, I wouldn't pay more than $10. They had handmade noodles, which many people do like. However, their noodles were very bland, along with their soup. I didn't find anything special here either. Maybe I'll get their dumplings or fried noodles the next time we come, but it's a no for me.

The…read moreThai basil leaves were absolutely ginormous, and they gave us plenty of them alongside very fresh limes, which I appreciated. The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Overall, Pho Phong Lưu ended up being one of those places where I completely understood the hype, even if it didn't become my personal favorite pho spot. While the broth leaned richer than my preference, I still enjoyed the experience and definitely look forward to trying other dishes next time.

After landing in San Antonio yesterday to kick off my summer vacation, the very first thing I did…read moretoday was ask my friend to bring me back to this restaurant. The reason is simple: we ate here two years ago, and it left such a great impression on us that we had been looking forward to coming back ever since. Fortunately, not much has changed in terms of either the quality or the overall presentation of the food. Everything is still delicious, especially the Pho Combo. To be honest, it's far better than most of the pho we've had in Germany. That doesn't mean the pho in Germany is bad--it simply means this place matches my personal taste much better. As for the downsides, they're almost exactly the same as before. Parking is still a major challenge, and I understand that's probably not something the restaurant can easily fix. We also tried calling ahead to reserve a table, but they don't take reservations, whether you're coming with a group of 5-7 people or just 2-3 people. We arrived at 6:45 PM and still had to wait about 40 minutes before being seated, which was honestly quite inconvenient. Coincidentally, there was live music tonight, which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, the sound system wasn't very good, so it was difficult to hear what the singers were performing. Then again, this isn't really the type of venue where people come specifically to enjoy live music, so most diners didn't seem to pay much attention to it. One thing I did notice was that either the kitchen has made a few changes over the past two years, or perhaps my own taste has changed a little. The food felt slightly saltier than I remembered, and the pho broth was richer and creamier. While that added some depth of flavor, it was a bit too rich for my liking, to the point where finishing the entire bowl of broth felt a little overwhelming. The braised short ribs were incredibly tender--so tender that a knife was almost unnecessary, and they could easily be pulled apart with just a fork. While many people would probably see that as a positive, I actually missed the slightly firmer, meatier texture I remembered from my last visit. That said, these are relatively minor issues. The quality may have dipped just a little compared to our previous visit, but this is still an excellent restaurant. If they can fine-tune those small details, it would easily return to being one of my favorite places. There's a good chance we'll stop by one more time before heading back to Germany.

Is it that time of year for another 1618 update? Absolutely…read more After my umpteenth visit, I think it's safe to say I've worked my way through almost the entire menu (minus a few noodle, chicken & vegetarian dishes). My 2025 review still stands, but after so many visits, I've noticed a few items haven't been good as they used to, particularly the chicken wings (and yes, all three of them). The Garlic Wings haven't been hitting quite the same. They've started to taste a little dry, and the saucier wings taste better the next day since they don't have time to steep through once served. The Filet Mignon Pepper Steak is still my favorite dish on the menu, but I still can't justify ordering it family-style anymore. It's delicious, but the portion just doesn't match the price. One of the newest additions--the Truffle Fried Rice is spectacular. It's light, not overpowering with truffle, and the fish eggs really adds the perfect little pop of texture/flavor. I don't think I breathed the entire time I scarfed it down!! 1618 is still one of my favorite restaurants in Austin of all time, but I think it's time for the menu to elevate a bit and dive deeper into less mainstream Asian cuisine. If anyone can do it, 1618 can.
