This place is also known as Hu Din Ji Shanghai Bistro - apparently there was a rebrand? No frills, local type of place. Went here on a thursday night, popped in and there weren't too many people, the kind of place where it's mostly Chinese folks getting legit chinese food. The waiter was super friendly, and helped recommend a noodle dish to us (my friend doesn't eat beef). His recommendation of the spicy chicken noodles was 10/10!! We got the dry version, and it was my favorite thing of the night. I would come back just to eat that. Apparently the menu has changed and I didn't take a photo, wish I had to get the exact name. It had a lovely mala spice, light vinegary taste and was jsut so good. We also got pot stickers, which had a great flavor but were a little doughy for me. 4.5/5 We came for the SJB, which I didn't love. Have been passing by this spot for awhile ever since it opened, they have been increasing expanding their menu as well as more patrons. So I finally went in to try what I believe is one of the most popular dishes in the Shanghai and Zhejiang provinces. The braised beef noodle soup. It came with thin noodles which it's just the choice of the restaurant's chef made with their supplier, as to each's liking, so it's the choice of the patrons as well. However the main ingredients is the braised beef, it's the consistency and taste that makes this dish great or a flop. The taste is I would say plain, the soup probably is made just with the beef. May I remind you that the base stock of the soup is actually more than that, first you would have to use beef bones to make a base which will take more than a half days of work which all boil down to at least a day in the process. Then one would prepare with the making of the braised beef, could be shank/brisket and it's all pending on the chef's background. Then to fuse both together is the key, to save you I will not discuss it here. Anyway, the taste of the soup is plain which has no body or depth. But the best part of the dish is the worst of the dish, the brisket. It's so dried, I could not chew it through not to mentioned swallow. So I left all or 90% on the table, even though nobody asked me how I feel about this dish. I still left them a 15% tip, right next to the stack of the chewed dry beef brisket. The place has a very efficient setup to accommodate the patrons, and that's all I have to said about this place. For those that choose to go, Godspeed! read more

Lunch 11/28/21 We came to this plaza to eat at Cocolo Ramen, but they were closed (again) so we ended up at Shanghai Bistro. They have a very limited menu. We order the duck vermicelli soup, pork belly soup and egg rolls. The duck vermicelli was ok but the tofu in it was extremely salty. Too salty to be edible. They also shred the duck so they don't give you much. My husband's pork belly was probably the best thing we ate here. It was very good, fatty and well seasoned. The egg rolls were hotter than hades so we ended up bringing it home since it was too hot to eat. Not sure why they're so popular. What we ate was pretty mediocre. read more

My hubby said these are the best potstickers in the bay area. Our other favorites are the beef tomato noodles, Shanghai dumplings and braised beef stew. Everything is good!!! And then we need to move on to the aesthetics. They recently revamped and its so lovely. You can see they put thought into their decor and setting. Bonus points for the comfy seats. This place has amazing pan fried pork buns! I ordered pan fried pork buns and spicy beef belly noodles for pickup. My dad brought the food home and the pan fried pork buns were still warm! There was a hole in the box of pan fried pork buns to let out the steam and the noodles and soup were packaged separately. The pan fried pork buns were AMAZING. Soup exploded in my mouth after taking a bite and they were really juicy. Spicy noodles were really good too but they were a bit spicier than I could handle so I'd ask for less spice next time. Was recommended here by a coworker for their pan fried buns and they did not disappoint! Prices are pretty reasonable too. We enjoyed their buns so much that we ordered takeout from them again soon after! We've tried both their shrimp and pork pan fried buns, but I prefer the pork more. Their soup dumplings also are pretty good. I like that they're not too fatty like some other places I've tried. Their pan fried pork buns are a must try. Both their pan fried pork and shrimp + pork buns are delicious. The actual bun isn't too thick. The filling is tasty on its own and even better with chili oil. They don't skimp on the shrimp and most buns had two shrimp. The skin of the potstickers had a nutty/wheat-like taste that I've never had in potstickers before and I enjoyed it. Their XLB were tasty too, but I enjoyed their pan fried pork buns the most. Their chili oil is the numbing kind that I like in moderation (I prefer chiu chow chili oil), but they were generous with sauce. I feel like Shanghai Bistro is a bit of a hidden gem, as they are located in a Newark plaza with lots of food options. The menu is relatively simple and I called in my order for pickup. The pickup process was relatively quick, and I saw quite a few togo orders when I went. I ordered their signature pan-fried buns, and a beef noodle soup. The beef noodle soup was interesting because the noodles and broth are separate. The broth is clear but when I pour it with the noodles, the sauce creates the flavor and makes the broth a lot darker. The beef is tender and flavorful, and comes with an egg too! The pan-fried buns have honestly been the best ones I've had. Even after takeout, the buns remain crunchy and juicy: be careful when biting into one because the juicy splashes out! The packaging is nice too, since they put aluminum foil to line the box and cut a hole to let out the steam. Overall I would recommend this place because I still crave their buns every now and then! read more

We always see this restaurant busy, and we would like to give it a try. We came here around 2pm before they had break time. We waited a little bit before we got served to our table. We ordered their famous shen jian pao (6 pieces) and one braised beef noodles with one extra noodles. I highly recommended their house dish shen jian pao, it's very very juicy and outside the pao skin was right not soft n not burn. We like the pao texture! It's way better than what we had from other place. Some other place might be oily. The noodles soup was good to us. I would say their soup taste a little tasteless and not salty. I actually like it. This means that they don't really put a lot of extra ingredients (msg) to make their soup taste better. It's more like eating at home. We will come back again and try out some other dishes. The staffs were nice and patient. The parking here is depends but should be able to find it. read more

We ordered the following items Pan Fried Buns Sen Jen Bao 5 stars the best in the Bay Area a must order almost every table had it. XLB 4 stars extra juicy, good skins , took a long time to come out. Smoked fish 4 stars very good but would have been better warm. Most of the Shanghai smoked fish dishes in Shanghai are now being served hot or warm. Shanghai sweet and sour spare ribs 1.5 stars worst dish of the meal premade and sitting on the counter served cold the sauce was just a congealed mess. Do not order. Salt water duck 4 stars good portions a classic dish. Pork bun 4 stars pork filling in a pastry outer shell comes in two buns. Flaky pastry core. Duck clear noodle soup 4 stars comes with duck gizzards slices, and fried puff tofu and glass noodles. Ba Bao sticky rice dessert 4 stars Service was Ok. The restaurant was packed through out the lunch rush with a waiting list. Prices are very reasonable all the above items $66 before tip. The bay area will forever be my go to for good asian food and Shanghai bistro did not disappoint. We came on a Saturday around 11:30 and it was already so packed! The restaurant's pretty big and there's a good amount of seating so you won't have to worry too much about a long wait. The restaurant had the traditional hustle and bustle of a good asian restaurant and it looked like it was mostly inhabited by people of asian descent (a good sign that it's authentic!) My friend of Shanghainese origin recommended the place and said that this was one of her top places for good shen jian bao (shanghai fried buns - think fried xiao long bai). So of course we got an order of shen jian bao, xiao long bao, and beef noodle soup. Everything came super fast, we probably only waited 15mins for everything to show up. Each order of bao comes with 6 dumplings which is perfect for sharing and trying everything. The shen jian bao was amazing - it was fried perfectly and the bao was filled with very flavorful soup without being soggy at all. I didn't like the noodles too much though. They did give a huge portion of noodles but the noodles themselves didn't have too much flavor or chewiness to them. The bistro was very reasonably priced, the total coming out to $30 total for 3 dishes. I probably wouldn't get their noodles again but their baos here are amazing and definitely worth a second visit! read more
