Mushroom with Gluten Noodle - 4/5 The mushroom and gluten were well prepared, though the flavor was a bit on the mild side. The noodles were the thin type, probably just standard packaged noodles. Shanghai Style Fried Prawns - 3/5 There are two options: one with regular prawns, and one with river shrimp. We chose the river shrimp. The overall flavor was much milder than the authentic version--it lacked sweetness, and the dish didn't have the rich red and glossy look it usually should. Food was just okay to me but the service really made me feel at home. I tried so many dishes here but my favorites had to be the Fish Head Clay Pot soup. It comes in a huge portion and had a subtle yet aromatic flavor; super comforting! I also had a dry noodle dish that I forgot to take a picture of, but it had diced potato and pork and it was really delicious. However, everything else here wasn't that impressive. The green onion sauce noodle was very bland & the green onions were burnt, the Shanghai style fried prawns were a complete catfish and arrived cold, and the stir frys had very basic flavor profiles. I've struggled to find authentic Shanghai food in my area, but I make the trek out here when I'm craving some. The Shanghai style veggie and salted pork rice is not overly salty and has good fried rice flavor. Among other Shanghainese places I've tried, they have the best salted pork rice. The fried rice cakes and Shanghai style chow mein are also solid choices. The Shanghai Meatball, a classic dish, is also one of my favorites. The only dish that I didn't prefer was the shredded pork noodle, which was a bit salty for me. A nice Shanghainese restaurant in Fremont. We actually came here because our usual Shanghainese spot was closed (it was a Tuesday). Luckily for us, Shanghai Flavor was more than up to the task! We ordered a few classics: salted duck, ma lan tou, and salted pork and vegetable rice, which were all excellent. We also tried some stir-fried loofah with gluten, sweet and sour pork (maybe a touch too sweet), and some stir-fried pork and veggies. I unfortunately don't know the name of the white vegetable in the dish, but it was delicious. They unfortunately didn't have some of the dim sum items we hoped to get (sheng jian bao and Shanghai shu mai), but they did have zong zi, which we were able to take home and eat later. I came here because I had a craving for juicy dumplings and couldn't wait for Trader Joe's or Din Tai Fung. I found that this place lacked a lot of flavor in its dumplings. The skin itself was chewy, which I liked. Typically, it's a little more delicate. I ordered the spicy wonton (which wasn't very spicy) and Shanghai rice cakes, which were chewy, but the flavor was also a miss. Shanghai flavor is a Fremont staple of authentic shanghainese cuisine with an extensive menu delivering home-cooked flavors. Growing up, there were more Shanghainese restaurants which have seemingly been replaced by spicy northern Chinese food and Taiwanese. Seeing Shanghai flavor in the Fremont area makes it not only a more unique place, but one that is well-run. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and a quick peruse of the menu, which featured lots of classics, allowed us to order quickly. A majority of our fishes here were very well done. The scallion oil noodles were delicious and not too oily. The pork kidneys were flavored well and most of all, fresh and properly handled i.e. no gamey/ammoniated flavor. The other highlight was the fish tofu and meat rice. These were both very flavorful yet delicate, balancing out the oil and flavors very well. People who might not be accustomed to Shanghainese food might find it oily and sweet,but that is not the case here. The only dish I didn't like as much was the sweet and tangy pork. The sauce was a little too heavy in their iteration, even if the flavor was perfect. All in all we found the food and the service warranting more visits to sample more of their menu. I look forward to coming back and for anybody else looking to try I recommend doing so earlier than 12 on the weekends if you are a larger party. read more

Our go to's are: green onion pancake, fish fillet in wine sauce, Shanghai style veggie & pork rice, Shanghai style fried eel & chives, veggie & pork rice cake, salt & pepper pork choy, stir-fried shrimp, and braised pork belly & rib. I having been going to this place on and off for a while and I think they made things a little different that are good. I only had braised beef noodle soup and XLB recently and I was liking how things are now. The portions of the beef noodle soup was huge and generous. There was a lot of beef and lots of flavored broth. I wish they used Bok choy instead of broccoli as veggie. The XLB was very big in size and delicious but it lacks a little bit of soup in it. Sometimes when a restaurant has a lot of variety on their menu (like this one), the quality is lacking, but everything we ordered was really, really good. This may be my new go-to Chinese restaurant. Actually wish there was more noodles and less beef. + Sweet and sour pork ribs: These are addicting. The flavor is more sweet than sour. The pieces are pretty small, and just about every piece has a bone it in. So, it's not the easiest to eat, but I couldn't stop. + Broccoli beef: Broccoli was perfectly cooked, with just a little bit of crunch. + Shanghai style dumplings (a.k.a. soup dumplings, a.k.a. XLB): Very good for takeout. The wrapping could be a little softer, but that's probably not a problem if you had it right out of the steamer. There aren't too many tables so I can imagine it might be hard to get a table. Looks like they take reservations since some tables were reserved in advance. My group of five ordered six dishes - hot and sour soup, Shanghai vegetable combination, xiao lung baos, salted pork rice, sweet and sour pork ribs, and salt and pepper fish filet. The food came out one at a time in a timely fashion. They don't pour the soup for you so that's something you'll have to for your table. The food was all really amazing and delicious. The dish of the night was the fish! Must order! It's got the perfect blend of seasoning and the fried portion was perfect ratio to the fish. The disappointment of the night was the pork ribs which was diced really small and some parts were all bones. The hot and sour soup was very good with lots of ingredients mixed in. Homestyle cooking, other regional cuisines, and western cooking techniques all played significant roles in the development of modern Shanghai cuisine. Good Shanghainese food emphasizes on condiment usage and the importance of retaining the original flavors of the ingredients. It aims at lightness in flavor and is mellower and slightly sweet in taste compared to some other Chinese cuisines. For review #500, I chose Shanghai Flavor mainly because of the positive reviews of their homestyle food from several people I follow here. This tiny, 10-table restaurant is located in the Fremont Times Square along Warm Springs Blvd. My family and I came here for dinner last night at around 5:00 pm. Upon entering, we were greeted warmly by the lady boss, who seated us at one of the smaller tables. The minimally decorated interior was clean and brightly illuminated. One of the servers brought us hot tea while we checked out the menu. It wasn't long before we ordered the following: - Fish Fillet in Wine Sauce ($9.95) - Shanghai-Style Meatball w/ Soy Sauce (Lion's Head, $10.95) - Homemade (Homestyle) Tofu ($8.95) - Xiaolongbao ($7.95 for 8) - Fried Yin Si Juan (Silver Thread Buns, $4.50) - Green Onion Pancake ($3.50) - Shanghai Spring Roll ($4.95) THE GOOD: Fish Fillet in Wine Sauce was made with basa fillets and fresh wood ear mushrooms. The pieces of basa held up well during the cooking process. They were tender but didn't break apart. The crunchy texture of the fresh wood ear mushrooms provided a nice textural contrast. The sauce had a nice faint wine taste. The Fried Yin Si Juan, also known as "Silver Thread Buns", came highly recommended by the owner. The exterior of the buns was fried to a perfect golden brown color and was very crispy. The interior was soft and I could actually see the threads (resulted from the stretching of the dough). The buns had a pleasant, lightly sweet taste. The spring rolls reminded me of those made by my aunt in Hong Kong. They were a bit smaller in size, like those you get at dim sum restaurants. The savory filling was made with shredded pork, Napa cabbage, and sliced shiitake mushrooms. The seasoning was right on. THE SO-SO: The green onion pancakes (2) were cut into wedges. They were pretty thin but had a decent amount of chopped scallions in them. The exterior was crispy but there were only a couple layers inside. I was hoping to see a couple more. Taste wise, they were OK. The tofu of the Homemade (Homestyle) Tofu was certainly not homemade. Commercially made fried tofu was used along with a plethora of vegetables (wood ear mushrooms, sliced carrots, green bell pepper pieces, and bamboo shoots). The should have used another sauce for the dish. The spicy sauce tasted like something straight out of a bottle and it covered up the tastes of the ingredients. The XLBs were very inconsistent. The skin was a bit on the thick side. I had three of them and they ranged from dry to OK juicy. The pork filling also wasn't very flavorful. THE BAD: The Lion's Head Meatball was just not good. Firstly, the meatballs were served lukewarm and lacked taste. Secondly, the sauce was super oily and way too sweet. Lastly, the Napa cabbage on the bottom was undercooked. I didn't like the dish at all. On the service front, I found the lady boss and our server to be friendly, kind, and attentive. With T/T, the check came out to about $64. I really want to like this place. But based on my experience last night, a 3-star rating is the best I can give them. I may return someday, but it will be a while before that happens. XLBS: these were just okay. I've definitely had better. I guess these were average. Shanghai chow mein: this was pretty good. Although some shrimp on it would have been even better. Eel with chives: this was good, but it was a little bit too sweet for us. It was also pretty oily, but I think this is normal for this dish because everywhere we go, it all seems oily. Scallion pancake: it wasn't that good. It was really thin and not enough scallion flavor. Guess you can pass on this. I've been on the hunt for the best soup dumplings in the Bay Area. I was craving something savory after having sweets at a nearby establishment. I noticed this business in my bookmarks and decided to pay them a visit. The wait was long. I would advise to plan ahead and make reservations because my friend and I waited around half an hour (outside, because there was not much space to stand inside). I never get XLB at a dim sum joint but I knew that I had to order it here- totally made the right call! I don't want to assume that your first order of judgement in a Shanghainese restaurant should be in their XLB but I mean... Anyways, the XLB were just about right! Soup was super flavorful and savory and the meat was tender. I just can't remember if the skin was a bit too thick. The fish filet braised in wine sauce was really good, though I LOVED the pork liver and kidney. It would have been great on top of noodles but I needed to spare my appetite. If you're into gamier tasting meats, this is it. I also had the water spinach, which was seemingly simple but very healthy tasting and delicious. The service attitude is really bad. I ordered on Chowbus to pick it up. The owner told me not to use the app and gave me the number asking me to call and order the next time. Although it's more convenient for me to use the app I wanted to do them a favor to support the business. The last time I called to order she asked why I called to order, came to the store to order in person, and wouldn't take my order on the call. I was confused and also shocked by her impatient voice. I was blamed for calling to order in the middle of a workday by a senior who spoke my mother tongue. It was a really upsetting experience. read more

You don't get any more authentic as this place for Chinese food. Today was our 2nd visit in 2 weeks. We'll be back for more shanghai sweet and sour pork ribs and mongolian beef. Delish food. I think we found our fav Chinese restaurant to go to when we're in the bay area. read more

More of a 3.5. Ive had better and worse, but this is def a solid authentic spot. Food- Shanghai Style Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs: Taste was pretty good. Wish the ribs themselves had a lil more meat on them but otherwise not bad. Shanghai Style Veggie and Salted Pork Rice: Pretty simple rice dish, but really good! It comes in a clay pot so some of the rice is crispy, which I think really makes the dish. Would recommend. Cabbage w/ dried shrimp: Basic veggie dish. Came out exactly the way I expected so thats a plus. Fried Seasonal Vegetable: Its this Asian vegetable (pea shoots or Dou Miao). Also came out the way I expected so thats also good lol Overall, while I dont think its the best chinese food ive ever had, its a solid joint to go to for authentic Chinese when you dont wanna think too much or go too far so ill prob be back. read more

Pros - A/C and less oil in their dishes Cons - soupless soup dumplings aka XLB So compared to my go to Shanghai Noodle House, the flavor seems more fresh and has like I said, less oil in their dishes. Some had less flavor, such as our rice cakes and Taiwanese veggies. The other dish with no flavor was the pork fried rice with veggies. Lite oil, but major burnt rice! :( The XLB had great soft skin, but no soup ;( wah! The inside had good flavor, but dry. If they could learn how to make it more moist, I bet the soup would be there when people go and take a bite. Hot & sour soup was good here. It had a strong bite of spicy flavor and it just sucked to be eating it on a hot day lol. Price wise, I think Shanghai Noodle House is cheaper, but it's also cash too so maybe that's the catch. read more
