The decorations are kinda fun--I like attempting to read all the signs (and having my dad correct me) in Chinese. Their prices are very fair and their portions are generous! Their lunch special is pretty awesome too--$10.99 for 2 entrees but you'll want to come by earlier than 12:30 or there might not be too much left. Most recently, we've tried their hainan chicken, sesame chicken, roast duck. (It comes with a drink, so I usually get the milk tea!) If you dine in, there's also free soup available. Local Cafe is now called Local Bistro, and the menu has changed from when it first opened. It seems like now they have tried to bring it back to a restaurant, compared to when they changed it to more of a Karaoke place. While it's great that they are trying to bring it back to more of a restaurant, I'm disappointed while doing that, they've also changed the menu up. While it is still considered a Hong Kong Style Cafe, I preferred the original menu when they had first opened up, and now they've changed it. They added the baked rice dishes, and Hong Kong Style BBQ Meats and have gotten rid of the more previously offered Cantonese style dishes. Our most recent visit, we ordered the Hainan Chicken Rice Combo, Roast Duck Rice Plate and Beef Stew Wonton Noodle Soup. The rice places come with a drink, so that is a plus there. They weren't anything spectacular, same with the noodle soup we ordered. The customer service here was ok, the staff was nice, no complaints there. The ambiance is ok, it's kinda dark inside, and they have a little lamp at the table for lighting. Too dark in my opinion. Visited Local Cafe again after so long, the food is still delicious, big portion and reasonably priced. Shrimp in egg drop sauce chow fun was excellent, full of wok hei and served in a big portion large enough for the two people. Authentic Cantonese hk style dishes. Came here for lunch at around 12:15 pm on a Tuesday . Place was packed but service was kind and quick. There was only one server and she handled it well! They have a lunch rice plate special where you choose two items for $10.99 or three items for $12.99. Delicious and portions are generous! My daughter and I went on a Saturday noon for lunch. It is located across Costco where a lot of Asian restaurants are so the parking lot was packed . We went in and were immediately greeted and seated . It was nicely decorated and spacious inside with lots of tables. They were quite busy. After ordering, it took at least 15-20 Minutes for our food to arrive. We've ordered fried tofu (which is super crunchy )Bbq Pork char siu rice plate ( with fried egg and steamed veggies) and Hainan Chicken rice plate. Both rice plates came with lemon ice tea which is delicious. Char siu was and fried tofu was delicious but the hainan chicken which took the longest to arrive was bland compared to other dishes. We made the mistake of waiting and got seated. We wait for another 10 minutes - again the lady has not returned to our table. We watch as she brings water to all the tables around us who arrived after. My husband and I ask each other again - should we leave? She finally comes over as we're deciding to go. We were ready to order, but I wanted to let her know that we were about to leave because nobody came by. Without acknowledgement or apology, she grabbed our menus off the table and walked away. Food: The Hainan Chicken is pretty good with portion of chicken (black meat), rice and chicken soup. I'd say the black meat's meat and skin ratio is not too ideal but acceptable. The Beef in Egg Drop Sauce is very much recommended! It's a big portion, it's enough for 2 or even 3 to share! The Hot and Sour Soup is not the traditional flavor, so I wouldn't recommend to people who are looking for the light texture or Taiwanese style. Service: the staff is nice though they are very busy. We were lucky enough to sit by the service station, so we grabbed our own chopsticks and takeout boxes instead. Ambiance, casual but viby at the same time. It's very comfortable. Local cafe is that spot you go to if you want good quality late night eats. When everywhere is closed you can count on local cafe to be open. I recommend looking at the menu before going in cause there's a lot to choose from. The food doesn't take that long to come out either which is a plus when you're hella hungry. This place is also the perfect place to drink while you eat. They have beer, wine, and soju so your drinks are endless. The decor is very modern and it doesn't feel like you're in an old school Hong Kong cafe until you eat the food. The "claypot rice" was just plain steamed rice, not cooked in a claypot at all. I expected the usual salted fish I've had at other places, but what they served was strange, full of bones, and neither salty nor fragrant. The Chinese bacon was tough and mostly fat, and they tossed in just two sad-looking pieces of bok choy. In the end, there was nothing "claypot" about this dish. These taste like any spicy chicken wings you would get at an Asian restaurant. I would warn you that these are really spicy because they have thai chili and jalapeños. I could handle the spice but I think for those who can't it may be a little too spicy. There was about 8 pieces in one dish. What I also love is the amount of garlic and onion. I would definitely recommend getting this dish. * H1. Salty Fish & Chinese Sausage Clay Pot Rice $15.99 (2/5) -I am giving this a do not get... First, there was no crispiness in the rice. For a clay pot rice I would expect it to have that chewy crispy rice at the edge of the bowl, but unfortunately this dish did not. There was also no flavor to the rice despite the fact that they gave us sauce, I think the rice should've already been flavored. The salty fish was not as I expected as well because there were barely any pieces of fish and they had bones in them. I think that since the dish is on the pricier side and Chinese sausage isn't that expensive, I expected a little more than few pieces. I would not recommend getting this dish. * F1. Beef Chow Fun $18.99 (3/5) -This dish was nothing special. It takes exactly like chow fun. The reason I am giving it a lower score was because this was really oily. I understand that this is cafe so the expectation should be lowered but I think that if they used less oil this dish would be ok. I also like how much vegetables was in this dish but the there was very few beef. There was that good soy sauce and the noodles were just the right chewiness. For starters, I would highly recommend the claypot rice as it's made quite well here. You can choose from the traditional preserved meat claypot which has cured pork and sausages or you can go for the chicken and mushrooms claypot which is just as tasty. Their other dishes are decent with the expectation that it's quick style cafe food. I would not recommend the milk tea as it is diluted and overly sweet with condensed milk. Service varies. There's other options for $15 range which is a bit more reasonable imo despite inflation reality. Definitely not coming back again for lunch.
