I finally came back as promised with lots of pictures. Unfortunately, the service has not changed much. They give you menus and a pencil, and you mark down what you want on the sheet and they pick it up. With this type of setup, we didn't really get a chance to interact with our server. Honestly, we weren't even sure who our server was since one person sat us, another brought out water, and someone else picked up our order sheet. Whenever we asked for drinks or anything extra, it felt like we were bothering whoever we happened to stop. My husband cannot eat dinner with just water--he needs a soda--but when we asked for one, it felt like it was a huge inconvenience for the server to get it. The food, however, is really good. We especially loved the chicken chow mein again. The biggest downside was the portion sizes. There were three of us, and the portions felt pretty small, especially considering how expensive this place is. Overall, the food is great and the service is just okay. This place is fantastic. I was in Hayward for work and drove down because of the good reviews. It was 100% worth it. I was by myself but I was seated immediately. Staff was very quick and helpful with questions. There is a cool window where you can see them making the dumplings. I ordered the Thai iced tea, chicken fried rice, beef and broccoli, and pork XLB. Quick visit to the Bay Area and decided to check out Din Ding Dumpling House in Union City Decoto area for lunch. Located in a shopping plaza so there's plenty of parking but can be difficult to find a spot during peak times. It is clean with a good size dining area with plenty of dining tables. This spot offers dim sum dumplings as welll as traditional Chinese dishes. The dishes are more Mandarin style, rather than Cantonese. The staff are friendly, courteous and very welcoming. Received very good service. It was lunch time so the place was packed but the staff were very efficient, checking in often and refilling water. I love Din Ding Dumpling House -- one of the best restaurants in Union City! Parking can be a hassle, the parking lot is huge but as they are many restaurants there, parking gets very congested. Depending on the time, parking can be tough. Their menu is extensive, many options to choose from. I enjoy their clay pots, noodles, fried rice and dumplings. Food is flavorful and delicious; a little pricier. The staff members are kind and polite, they are attentive but not overbearing. Ambiance is simple -- black table and chairs, sauces on the table. My family and I have been coming here for years now, maybe close to 6 years. This business has had its ups and downs, but right now, it's definately on the upward trajectory. We visited on a Friday evening at 6:30PM, and the wait time was 30 minutes. The place was packed, and I'm starting to think this place has gone viral. We've never seen this place so packed on a weekday, but we wanted to choose a "less busy" day to celebrate mother's day with our mom. The Xiao long bao here is her favorite in all of the Bay Area. Even with the long wait time and crowds, we were seated, given our menus and waters promptly. They did keep forgetting to give us our condiments even though we asked 3 times. We eventually just asked the table next to us if we could borrow theirs. We ordered: - 2 orders of the pork Xiao long baos: 5/5, the juiciest Xiao long baos around. I always gently put them in the soup spoon to keep all of the juices in, then poke a hole in and fill it with ginger and vinegar and eat the whole thing. It's usually really hot, so be careful about burning your mouth, but it's soooo good. - 2 bowls of plain right, to help neutralize the amount of flavor, salt and msg in all of the food! - Pork chops with garlic sauce 5/5: It's fried so it comes out crispy, soaked in a very thick garlic sauce. It's flavorful, and honestly I'm sure this raises my cholesterol every time I eat it. - Mongolian spicy beef 4/5: half the dish was full of onions! So they definately skimped on the beef, but one of the tastiest Mongolian beefs we had because they actually put chili's in it. The beef was tender and not tough to chew. Probably wouldn't order again due to how they skimped on the beef. We like to try a new dish every time we visit. Between 4 people, it came out to roughly $100 with tip and tax. Overall, we'll keep visiting, but it was so busy, we'll try to visit between Monday-Thursday instead to see if they're less busy... The restaurant interior was dated and in a little shopping center so I wasn't sure what we were in for, but it really doesn't matter if you're Din Ding Dumpling House and your food is even better than the fancy place that shall not be named and also starts with "Din." My favorites were the xiao long bao (of course), "twisty cucumber," veggie buns, and spicy dry noodles, all loaded with the table chili oil. The sauteed string beans and bok choy balanced out some of the carbs and heat and made the meal feel healthy enough. Their shrimp fried rice is one of my go-to favorites--perfectly balanced, not too salty, very flavorful, and they definitely don't skimp on the shrimp. On this visit, I tried the braised beef in a pot, which came with mushrooms, mixed vegetables, and potatoes in a savory sauce that was absolutely delicious. We also ordered the shrimp & loofah xiao long bao. This place is well known for their XLB, and this one did not disappoint--fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The spicy beef brisket noodle was another highlight, with generous portions of beef and tasty noodles. If you enjoy heat, I'd recommend asking for it a bit spicier. We got in with a group of 7 right before the lunch rush (there definitely seems to be an uptick in crowds 12:15-30ish. and got a table straight away. We panicked when we thought we overordered, but in fact it was a good amount (with a few leftovers) and everything was delicious. Though I'm glad because they at least have a Yelp waitlist to join and easily track your place in line through the app. I arrived with a party of 4 around 1:20 pm and the wait said around 24-40 minutes so we decided to take a stroll over at Daiso next door to kill some time and within 15 minutes I received a text saying that my table was ready and then received a call from the restaurant within a minute of the text! The food was better than I had expected. ~~Parking: The restaurant is located in a strip mall so there's plenty of parking if you're willing to walk! ~~Service: Good. It wasn't that difficult to hail down a wait staff even though we were seated in the middle of the restaurant closer to the wooden divider. ~~Best Part: XLB's. These were huge! They were juicy and the outside was cooked to perfection (I've gone to some places where it feels a bit rubbery like it's underdone). ~~Tips: Try everything you think would be good at the restaurant. We've visited before many years ago and always loved their dumplings, but there is lots to choose from on the menu. This time we tried the braised beef noodle soup too. The noodles were springy and fresh and seeped in the wonders of the aromatic spices and savory beef flavor from the soup, while the beef was tender, and well seasoned. We also ordered the pork soup dumplings (usually a must when you come here). which were filled with hot soup, not as flavorful this time, but still warms the stomach very well on a cold night. For our last dish, we picked the Korean sprouts vegetable dumplings to squeeze in some veggies and were impressed how much they packed into each dumpling! Pumpkin, Shrimp, Pork Shui Mai - This was definitely our favorite dish and was surprised by how much we enjoyed it. 7 years later, and she still loves this place! We were happy to find that the quality is just as good as we remember. The XLB is packed with flavorful broth--easily 1-3 spoonfuls of soup in each dumpling. The wrappers are delicate yet hold together well. The noodles have a wonderful QQ texture with the perfect amount of chewiness. Service was friendly, the food arrived quickly, and every dish tasted fresh and satisfying. My friend and I came over at around 6 PM on a Friday and the place was packed and had a 15-20 minute wait time. The inside was a bit crowded and the tables were placed closely to each other. The food was great, their xiao long bao came hot and tasty (what else could I ask for) and their shao mai had the right amount of savory and sweetness from the chicken and the corn. However, I was given a vinegar bottle that was loose which led to me spilling vinegar on myself and around me. One of the workers was dismissive and seemed agitated over the accident. Celebrated Valentines Day at one of my favorite restaurants in this area, as a Sacramento native this is always a MUST STOP. We were a group of 2 couples and man did we order a spread! We ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice, Sautéed Bok Choy, String Beans w/Pork, Pan Fried Chives & Shrimp Dumplings, Honey Walnut Shrimp & the Pork Xiao Long Bao. Every single plate had an explosion of flavors, minus the bok choy which gave that fresh balance of veggie that we needed. (Still very good) The Pork Xiao Long Bao dumplings are 5/5! We ordered 3 baskets and I can honestly say I had a set of 8 to myself with no problem. The string beans and honey walnut shrimp went perfectly together. All in all, our whole meal was delicious and cooked to perfection. We hardly took any leftovers home. The restaurant is a packed house a majority of the time and with great reasoning! Contemporary warm and simple interior that yet reflects its Taiwanese heritage. Our six plates came out quickly with the first arriving within 10 minutes of ordering. Pork Xiao Long Baos: The highlight at DinnDing are their Incredible pork Xiao Long Baos (XLBs) with perfect thin and malleable skin on the outside, delightful yet copious soup & tender pork filling that isn't too salty on the inside. As with any good XLB, each of Din Dong's XLBs pulls away from the steam tray nice and jiggly! Take a bite off the top and the skin presents a subtle gentle feel that delivers a playful resistance before giving way to the insides. PERFECTION!! I've been to a ton of XLB places, even the famous one, and in my opinion, the Pork XLBs here set the highest bar. 11/10! Steamed Fish Dumplings: Medium thickness skin with excellent texture, tender fish and veggie filling that doesn't smell or taste fishy at all. Best Fish dumplings we've had anywhere.. (9.95/10) Pro tip: Add a teeny bit of chili oil to the fish dumplings for an extra kick! Garlic Spinach: On point, and a nice steamed super healthy contrast to the dumplings we ordered. Plenty of diced garlic throughout. (8.5/10) Dry-Fried String Beans with Pork: That said, we've also had the dry-fried string beans with pork here, and I prefer those a bit more due to the charred wok aroma of that one. (9/10) Ok.. maybe it isn't fair comparing a steamed entree vs a fried one.. Perhaps we will order BOTH of the veggies next time ! :) Shrimp and Pork Potstickers: Tons of minced pork inside, no skimping with any veggie filler like most places. Served upside down with a beautiful crunchy thin to medium thickness crust, but a fair bit oilier than I expected. -1.0 for the oiliness. -0.5 for the lack of veggies that really DO add to the flavor. (7.7/10) Pork & Shrimp Shu Mai (8.8/10) Great taste and texture to the skin, minced pork & shrimp on the inside and topped off with a teeny tiny shrimp at the top! Pretty good.. Verdict: Our favorites are the XLBs, String Beans, Fish Dumplings and the noodle soups and plates we've had here on previous visits. Din Ding is definitely one of the top XLB places here in the Bay and is worth the drive and the wait! read more
