Din Ding in Union City is a solid spot for xiao long bao, especially if you're craving something comparable to Din Tai Fung but slightly cheaper and easier on the wallet. They have plenty of seating, but I'd recommend joining the waitlist ahead of time if you're coming during peak lunch hours. The quality of their XLB is really good. I'd say they're on par with Din Tai Fung in terms of flavor and juiciness, but the dumplings here are bigger. We usually go for the pork and crab XLB, which are flavorful, juicy, and explode in your mouth with soup. I also tried the pork belly burger this time. The pork belly itself was good, but it didn't really stand out to me and probably isn't something I'd order again when there are so many other things to get. Service is decent and gets the job done. I am truly so disappointed in this experience after having many good memories here. I wrote this review the minute I left Christmas Eve 2025 and left it in my drafts folder contemplating if I should post it, here I am with my final decision: I have never had such lack of help from wait staff in my entire life. I am so disappointed in this place, you will NEVER find me back here again. Alright let's start with when we got there, we put our names on and the iPad said 3-11 minute wait. 25 minutes later, we finally got seated. I understand it was busy but this was just the great start to the dinner we had. We ordered and the food started coming. We ordered two plates of Mongolian beef to go with two plates of shrimp fried rice. We got the Mongolian beef before the rice which was the 3rd to last item that came out when we ordered 11 plates. The table was noticing that the rice was not coming out in time so I asked to cancel one plate of rice with not one, not two, but three different waiters. First two were not helpful since it seemed like they couldn't understand me or just didn't care and the third said "they already made the plate so it's not an option" and set both plates down. I was trying to ask since the rice came out so late and was supposed to go with the Mongolian beef if we could just take one off and there was back and forth without him backing down (why?? Does the money come out of your paycheck??). Anyways so okay we then get the bill and we have a service charge that we had never seen before which was $33 and we didn't see that so we tipped 20% on top of the bill. However we get chased down as we're leaving because they are shocked we left a tip on top of the service charge which now we are seeing for the first time. Completely our fault that we don't catch it before. But we had a 4 minute conversation about what the service fee was vs a tip and from what I gather they were saying it is not the same as a tip. However when we said "okay then ya we are keeping the tip on the payment" they were ECSTATIC!! Like shockingly surprised we did that so we walked away feeling like they lied to us about the service charge being a tip. Then the whole group taking the same car agreed that service fees are tips. I wouldn't know, I've never had to pay for one before. But after this visit on Christmas Eve I am just beside myself with the lack of customer service and then what seems to me is the blatant lie about the service fee not being a tip. I've seen other people comment on the rude staff and up until this point I had never seen it. Now I will not be coming back here and Din Ding will never get another cent from me. I finally came back as promised with lots of pictures. Unfortunately, the service has not changed much. They give you menus and a pencil, and you mark down what you want on the sheet and they pick it up. With this type of setup, we didn't really get a chance to interact with our server. Honestly, we weren't even sure who our server was since one person sat us, another brought out water, and someone else picked up our order sheet. Whenever we asked for drinks or anything extra, it felt like we were bothering whoever we happened to stop. My husband cannot eat dinner with just water--he needs a soda--but when we asked for one, it felt like it was a huge inconvenience for the server to get it. The food, however, is really good. We especially loved the chicken chow mein again. The biggest downside was the portion sizes. Came here with our best friends yesterday and enjoyed everything we had! The salt and pepper pork chop was my fave and my son loved the honey walnut shrimp. This place is fantastic. I was in Hayward for work and drove down because of the good reviews. It was 100% worth it. I was by myself but I was seated immediately. Staff was very quick and helpful with questions. There is a cool window where you can see them making the dumplings. I ordered the Thai iced tea, chicken fried rice, beef and broccoli, and pork XLB. Located in a shopping plaza so there's plenty of parking but can be difficult to find a spot during peak times. It is clean with a good size dining area with plenty of dining tables. My family and I have been coming here for years now, maybe close to 6 years. This business has had its ups and downs, but right now, it's definately on the upward trajectory. It's usually really hot, so be careful about burning your mouth, but it's soooo good. - 2 bowls of plain right, to help neutralize the amount of flavor, salt and msg in all of the food! - Pork chops with garlic sauce 5/5: It's fried so it comes out crispy, soaked in a very thick garlic sauce. It's flavorful, and honestly I'm sure this raises my cholesterol every time I eat it. - Mongolian spicy beef 4/5: half the dish was full of onions! So they definately skimped on the beef, but one of the tastiest Mongolian beefs we had because they actually put chili's in it. The beef was tender and not tough to chew. We've visited before many years ago and always loved their dumplings, but there is lots to choose from on the menu. This time we tried the braised beef noodle soup too. The noodles were springy and fresh and seeped in the wonders of the aromatic spices and savory beef flavor from the soup, while the beef was tender, and well seasoned. We also ordered the pork soup dumplings (usually a must when you come here). which were filled with hot soup, not as flavorful this time, but still warms the stomach very well on a cold night. Pumpkin, Shrimp, Pork Shui Mai - This was definitely our favorite dish and was surprised by how much we enjoyed it. My friend and I came over at around 6 PM on a Friday and the place was packed and had a 15-20 minute wait time. The inside was a bit crowded and the tables were placed closely to each other. The food was great, their xiao long bao came hot and tasty (what else could I ask for) and their shao mai had the right amount of savory and sweetness from the chicken and the corn. The qishan minced meat noodles was the table favorite. The pork xiao long bao and the pork and crab xiao long bao were also really good. Would definitely order these again. I wish their water cups were bigger or if they could leave a water pitcher on the table. The restaurant is very cozy and lively when full. Everything was also clean.
