We ordered the Braised beef and it was still cold. The taste was good, but you can tell it was not made fresh. For the price of almost $20 dollars not worth it either. It seemed more like an 11-15 dollar dish. The Shrimp with egg chef special was good, but also not worth the cost. I was looking to find something more high end. It seemed like something you can make easily. There was ore egg then shrimp and the shrimp were small with minimal flavor. I doubt we will go again. The location is out of the way for us and the prices are little bit steep for simple food. I will say the food is more authentic under the chef's special side and a better choice then their typical options found in most asian restaurants. I think the places in reno need to stop catering to those tastes and just embrace their authentic flavors and focus on selling these. It is a better way to caption the audiences. We were the only ones there which made me kind of worry but I remembered it being good last time so we went ahead ordering quickly. I am not over exaggerating when I say our food arrived within 5 minutes of ordering. It's was good. But, I noticed, i felt extremely fatigued afterwards. For all the Californian! Do not come to this restaurant, worst Chinese food ever! We got stuck in the snow around Christmas time, the owner was super rude and unfriendly. The food was bad, the old man is rushing us to order, we ask for some recommendations, he refused. We are Chinese, and came to support some local Chinese restaurants, we came in a large group with babies, the overall experiences and food quality are just a nightmare. The ribs are too sweet; overcooked; the shrimp was not fresh; we asked for couple dishes, the owner said they sold out, etc. If you are from California for travel and want some Chinese food, go somewhere else! read more

Seven of us decided to try this newer restaurant behind the black bear diner of south virginia. This is a northern Chinese restaurant with their menu interspersed with some Cantonese items on the menu. First of all, if you decide to try a different restaurant and you are not familiar with, ask the wait staff what to order. What comes to mind is "when in rome". Certain items should not be ordered for dinner because they are lunch items, like fried rice and chow mein for instance. We ordered beef fried rice, like I said, this is a break in protocol when white rice is normally ordered for dinner, it wasn't bad but I wouldn't be the one to order this item for dinner. The drunken chicken was a pretty authentically prepared dish, this was a specialty which many restaurants will not serve because of the complexity of preparation. a winner in my book! Lemon chicken was the next item, I would never order a dish like that, it just shows lack of imagination in what to order, come on chicken in batter deep fried with a lemon sauce, pretty gross. Mongolian beef, this was a pretty good dish to order. This was a pretty authentic dish with lots of green onions which is the star of the dish. Sweet and sour pork was the next item, i must admit i would never order this dish either, but the dish wasn't all terrible. Curry chicken was not too bad, but it did use white meat chicken which is not normal for this dish. Asian dishes normally do not use white meat, this is used because of the different clientele preferences have changed. Another item ordered is a spicy beef dish, I have no comment other than it was okay. Beef belly or brisket hot pot with chilies and Shanghai bok choy and sweet potato noodles. This is an item that one should not order if you cannot tolerate extremely spicy dishes. This is an item I would never order also because it's simply too spicy for most people to tolerate. I did enjoy the sweet potato noodles because they do not absorb the spiciness of the chile broth. The last item is a deep fried flounder. This was done exceptionally well and a bonus, the fish was a female so lots of eggs were in the fish. This dish is best eaten as soon as it is presented, you just simply cut it up and eat everything with the exception of the head and the internal rib bones. Together we ordered four beef items, three chicken items, one pork and one fish. Ideally only one of each item is ordered and a lamb dish and a vegetable dish or two should be ordered but then again it just shows that ordering an asian meal is difficult if one doesn't wish to experience a true meal but are stuck with familiar boring items. I would return to try some of their true Shanghainese menu items but with a much more crowd that is willing to try some of their specialties and not some items which I have mentioned above. read more

Had high hopes for this place, but it fell short. Wife and I were here Saturday afternoon, not busy at all. The menu has your typical Chinese food items plus it has the authentic menu in the back of the menu. Decided to try the beef noodle soup, salt n pepper tofu, generals chicken, chicken and salty fish fried rice and sweet and sour pork ribs. The beef. Noodle soup was a clear broth type which really didn't have the typical beef noodle flavor. It really didn't have a lot of flavor and the beef was very fatty. The noodles seemed like pre cooked noodles. It was ok but just not flavorful. Salt and pepper tofu was ok. Pretty good flavor if you got a piece w seasoning on it. Generals chicken was very tough dark meat. Flavor was ok but meat is way too tough. Fried rice was ok. Worst part of the meal was the sweet and sour ribs. Most places that make these traditional sweet and sour ribs will make it so the meat falls off the bone. Not so here. Very rough and not even close to coming off the bone. Pretty sure they missed a step In the cooking process. Very disappointing dish since other places in town make it perfect. Told the waiter and they didn't even offer to take it off the check since it was barely eaten. Most place would do this. May or may not be back to give this place another try. read more

This place just opened today and it's great. If you want a step up from good Reno Chinese-American food or have fond memories of wonderful Chinese food in San Francisco, this is the place to come. We have eclectic tastes so we went for some of the more adventurous items from the chef's specials at the back of the menu. And WOW! WOW 1: Ox tripe with green peppers. We love menudo and order tripe dim sum whenever we visit the Bay Area. This was some of the best tripe we've ever had. WOW 2: Chengdu egg soup. We saw a dish on the menu that we've never eaten, so we ordered it. Tender balls of scrambled egg with two kinds of mushrooms, cloud ears, tender strips of pork, and Chinese greens in a delicious broth. WOW 3: Salt and pepper shrimp, in the shell fried to perfection so the shell is crispy-yummy. There are two version of this dish on the menu. This was from the specials in the back. The other might be less adventurous--probably worth asking. WOW 4: Pork with tofu. This is a special wow because it's hard to find anywhere. It uses a special super-firm tofu. Delicious. Yum 5: Just for fun we ordered one dish not on the chef's specials--beef chow fun. Not a bit adventurous and very tasty. This place is brand new and off to a great start. The sweet and sour ribs had good flavor just couldn't chew the meat. Was hard to even get a bite. I prefer mine to be tender and fall off the bone. The general chicken had good flavor but as well was tough. The inside had no changes from the prior business. Service was ok except we did let him know that the ribs were not editable. Amazing food! Amazing customer service. Accidentally arrived a little too early before my friend arrived. The lady who sat me to a table waiting didn't seemed to mind just me sitting at the table waiting for my friend. I ordered the beef stew with noodles. I had higher expectations for the beef stew. I was not a fan of the noodles at all. I prefer they had the real egg noodles or the flat rice noodle. It was alright 3.5 . But my friend had the beef sizzling platter which was "AMAZING" like 4 or 4.5 . What I really want to try is their hotpot. Unfortunately they didn't have any at the time. Tucked in the back of the shopping center by Black Bear Diner, Shanghai Bistro is quite the pleasant surprise (for Reno). Trying to avoid the Americanized Chinese fare, I go straight to the chef specialty section of the menu to find immediately get a half chub from the sheer selection of awesomeness displayed in front of me. Where tf do I start? My companions may not be (definitely are not) the heat-seeking capsaicin junkie that I am, so the sweet sweet pepper sign of destiny next to half the menu items may be a little off-putting. We settle on the braised lamb hot pot, salt and pepper shrimp, braised pork belly, and the couple's delight (My personal favorite dish). The service is friendly and punctual, food comes out faster than expected- no complaints there. Food was flavorful and fresh, couple's delight could have been spicier, but that could just be me. Definitely will come back and try out all the dishes at some point, and you should too. This sounds like a five star review, which it could be, but the water tasted like there was a lemon sitting in it for way too long and got a little funky. Came here @6:30pm on a Sunday (Father's Day) it was very quiet. I had a party of 8 which was easy to accommodate! They probably had about 4 big round tables. Service was awesome and food spoke for itself!! anyone looking for a nice Chinese dinner this is the place to go!! Don't expect it to be cheap cause they deliver great quality food! Now my favorite Asian restaurant in Reno. Good food, good service, easy parking, clean.

Food was super oily. I ordered a noodle dish, a fried rice dish, and a pork belly dish. Of all three I don't recommend any, there was a funky after taste to all of them. My party and I walked into the restaurant (completely empty) and there was no wait staff in sight. We walked out and walked back in because there's a bell when you walk in and again there was no one in sight. We waited for about 10 minutes before someone came out from the back and greeted us. They took our order and the order came out fairly quickly. We were taking it to go and there was no one that greeted us for 10 minutes so we decided no tip. The mood suddenly changed when the waiter gave us our change and we did not leave a tip. She snatched their copy of the receipt from my hand and stormed off to the back of the restaurant again. We were on the toilet for the rest of the day after the meal- we also only ate about a quarter of what was given to us. Only positive note I can give is that the restaurant was clean and it looked nice. read more

Recently opened Shanghai Bistro's menu has plenty of typical Chinese American dishes. The lone noodle dish served during dinner (vermicelli with spicy minced pork for $13.95) is on the chef's special menu of authentic Chinese dishes, many of which sounded exotic and enticing. With my friend and her twin boys in tow, we started with egg rolls ($5.95, four pieces), crab rangoon ($8.95), and pot stickers ($8.95, six pieces). The egg rolls were average and a little on the small side. The rangoon's pinched "crown" of wonton wrapper was overly crunchy, and there wasn't any sense of crab in the pouch's cream cheese filling. The potstickers were quite large, crispy, and stuffed with plenty of meaty filling; definitely the most satisfying of the trio. Beef sizzling platter ($12.95) was the lone entree ordered from the non-special menu. A hot, cast iron platter was brought to the table, then piled with food and covered with a steel cloche. A few minutes later our server came back to reveal the sizzling, steaming mix of velveted strips of beef with bell pepper, onion, and mushroom in a savory sauce. It was delicious, and definitely my favorite part of the meal. Moving on to the chef's menu, we tried a chilled jellyfish salad ($12.95), strips of marinated jellyfish mantle tossed with chopped scallion, and a sauce redolent with toasted sesame oil. Being a fan of pretty much every bit of seafood I've previously tasted, I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately for me, the crunchy/chewy/squishy texture was unpleasant, and the sharp, bitter sauce wasn't helping. My friend wasn't new to this dish and really enjoyed it, so it's apparently an acquired taste. Sweet and sour pork ribs ($15.95) were unlike the Korean variety, or any other. Cross sectioned rounds of rib bones were covered in a sticky, viscous sauce, topped with sesame seeds and chopped scallion. The sauce wasn't bad, but what meat was on the little bones was tough and difficult to chew off. Definitely not my favorite treatment for ribs. A dish of napa cabbage. pork, and rice cake ($13.95) included sliced rice cake, mushroom, scallion, and shoestring strips of pork, on a bed of cabbage. The savory sauce was good, and most of the ingredients were enjoyable. Apparently I just don't dig on rice cake. Just as with Korean rice cake, I found it to be a weird mix of chewy, gummy, and generally flavorless. Starchy carbs without any discernible reward, at least to my palate. Braised pork lion head ($14.95) turned out to be two giant meatballs--said to resemble a lion's head--ringed by baby bok choy, drenched in a sauce heavy with Chinese five spice blend (cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and Szechuan peppercorn). Seriously, the pair were each the size of a baby's head. The cabbages were perfect, the sauce was a bit overspiced, but it was the meat texture that threw me. Apparently a mix of fatty pork shoulder and belly is ground, marinated, and massaged into a paste. The end result is what I can only describe as "fluffy", and I've never encountered anything similar. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill meatball. Service was excellent, and I'd really like to sample their selection of "hot pots", wherein you cook a variety of ingredients at the table. Having seen a few folks enjoying it, I regretted not ordering one. read more

Really good food! There's a huge menu and most sound very interesting and delicious. Definitely worth several visits. The space itself is bright, open and clean. Service was good, but that's also because we were the only ones there. Not busy at all on a Tuesday night. Since I love pork belly, I had to order the braised PB on the menu. I have a favorite version of this from another restaurant so I was curious how it would hold up. They definitely differ in presentation, but the tastes are pretty much even. Shanghai's version has less garlic, but still very tasty. There's a good balance between meat and fat, and the bok choy was a nice touch. I would order this again but only after I've tried other things on the menu. My hubs ordered the sweet and sour pork. I know. I couldn't convince him to go for something else less familiar, but no dice. I haven't had S&S pork in such a long time that I actually enjoyed it this time. But, it would not be my first choice, given all the other options on the menu. We paired that with the house fried rice, which was yummy, and I rounded everything up with a cold sake recommended by our server. Overall, an enjoyable meal. The portions were huge so we got lots of leftovers. I would've happily give 5 stars, except for the fact that at some point, one of the staff was playing their personal device on the dining room, sans headsets. She probably didn't think much of it since we were the only ones there, but still, we are still considered customers, no? Perhaps a background music will help, too. It just sounded so dead. They could've filled the place with music instead of something from a show on someone's IPAD, or some such device. Good thing this has nothing to do with food, so I might go back to try some of their other more interesting offerings. And I do hope the lack of any other patrons on this particular Tuesday night is not the norm and as hubs said: 't's a stiff competition out there. I hope they survive.' read more

Came with my sister as I'm visiting from out-of-town and was pleasantly surprised at the selection of options for a Chinese-American restaurant. We came quite early so it wasn't busy but service was quick and easy. We received our dishes within 5-10min after ordering 4 dishes. We tried the veggie of the day (an-choy), House braised tofu, Szechuan beef and napa cabbage rice cakes. Overall, all the dishes were good. The Szechuan beef was on the sweeter side which is not my preference and these rice cakes were more rectangular-shaped rather than oval so the consistency wasn't as chewy as I like and was a little less flavorful than other rice cake dishes I've had, but all-in-all, we enjoyed our meal. Decor is clean and nice and I appreciated that they played Chinese music. Prices are good and on par with the area. Parking is easy with a large lot and only a couple of other competing businesses in the same complex. Good option for Chinese food in the Reno area with decent array of options. read more
