I have never been when the restaurant was busy. Last time I went, there were no other tables. The time before that, two other tables were seated. Regardless, the food is fantastic. I always get hot and sour soup to start out with, then it just depends on what my palette is feeling. I bet if they started serving dim sum on Saturdays and Sundays, traffic might increase. Shanghai Kitchen has the most authentic Shanghai food we've ever had here. One of us grew up in Shanghai. The pictures on the wall of old Shanghai are fun to see as well. The Sichuan dishes are authentic. We ordered exclusively from the "Chinese menu" -- it has English translations for everything. As for the comment saying this is the "worst Chinese I've ever had": Why would you order sweet and sour chicken and everything else you list at *Shanghai* Kitchen? I visited for lunch last week, and enjoyed the food. It's been a while since I've enjoyed Chinese food, but Shanghai Kitchen does a great job! I ordered the chicken/beef/pork curry, which was very tasty (honestly, I probably would've enjoyed it more if I picked one type of meat instead of going for the combination). What I really enjoyed, though, was the scallion pancakes I ordered as an appetizer - it's been a long time since I've had a good scallion pancake! My office is relocating to downtown Denver in a month, and this is one of the places I'm going to miss. I don't find too many good Chinese restaurants around. Most of them are the overpriced, ritzy restaurants where you pay $15 for an entrée, and the rest are the greasy spoon diners that pack you full of substandard food. I wish I read the reviews before going because I'm not a very picky eater but I was kind of disappointed. I ordered egg rolls and beef chow fun. Egg rolls were vinegary, bitter, and inedible, even after trying with the sauce. I asked the server for a different sauce to help but she brought me a sauce that was sour, so it did not help. The beef chow fun, big portions and the beef was good and not overcooked. But the beef was big slices so I had to chew for a while. Flavoring wasn't bad but I had to add lot of soy sauce to add more flavor. Interior was nice and seemed clean. Overall I might come back, just won't order the egg rolls. read more

Authentic Shanghai food! The taste is so real! You can tell the owner is from Shanghai from the Chinese title "". It is amazing to find all these Shanghai dishes in the menu in a such small restaurant in Denver. The place is clean. The people are friendly. Talking with them in Shanghai dialect brings so many memories of the six years I spent in Shanghai. Highly recommended for people want REAL Shanghai food. I've been coming here for a while and the food has alway been consistent and delicious. I'm not a vegetarian but the sesame tofu is awesome! They closed for remodel and now it's back and looks great- way more appealing to sit down for dinner. This place has great service and they look like they are ready to be busy even when they aren't.. This restaurant is totally a scam. They intentionally defraud guests no matter who you are Chinese or Foreigners. Firstly they provide you with a menu, but they ask for a totally different price (25% higher) for each dish when checking out!!!. When you ask for the reason why they charge a different price they will tell you they have the right to adjust the price cuz there are very little tiny Chinese characters on the right corner of menu stating "we have the right to change the price anytime". They failed to inform any customers before the ordering, and I asked all customers there if they know they charge differently from what in the menu and none of them knew that. That is totally unacceptable for all customers and that is totally a defraud!!! The lady/manager is extremely rude and disrespectful and full of lies. She said she knew we came to their restaurant several times and knew us, but it is our first time been there. A place full of lies and fraud, Avoid this place and let more people know this!!! read more

Order from the Chinese menu if you want a different cultural gastronomical experience. A variety of choices to explore. They also have delicious American style Chinese dishes that include a plentiful selection of lunch specials. My server was very nice and helpful in choosing a dish I would enjoy. The owner also came to my table and struck up a conversation. He told me about Shanghai where he is from. I had taken a month long tour of China in 2011 and spent six full days in Shanghai. This is a really solid lunch place in the DTC. I've been here several times. The hot & sour soup is terrific. I've tried a variety of entrees here. Today I had one of the specials on the board which was a basil canon chicken- denoted as spicy. It was spicy and yummy. My boyfriend had the triple mongolian delight and it was also really good. The food at the Shanghai Kitchen is so yummy. I highly recommend you grab a lunch or dinner at this great restaurant. The staff are so sweet and helpful. I didn't know what I wanted to eat, so the server made a suggestion and it was delicious. Ton ton noodle (I think that was the name) with chicken. It is a must try! Also, there was a moive made in the restaurant. They allowed me to take pictures of the newspaper clips they have hanging on the walls. They are so proud of the moive and I cant wait to see it. When down in the DTC, I always find myself in wonderment how people nourish themselves. It's a foodie's black hole!! However, occasionally, I'm directed to a place that isn't advertising teenage waitresses in short shorts or isn't owned by a corporation. The "Shang" (yes, awesome nickname) is an example of the opposite. Good, not great food, family owned, and the food is the only thing crying out for attention. I called for pickup this fine evening and found it ready to go in 10 minutes. Not bad at all. For $40, a mountain of food was obtained for dinner times two. I have never dined in at Shanghai Kitchen, so my review is strictly based on their delivery service and food. I am a fan Shanghai Kitchen. Their food is very good, albeit, I do agree that the quality of the chicken they use could be improved. They are a little high priced as well, unless you get the lunch specials. What I LOVE about Shanghai Kitchen is the variety in the their menu (not just Chinese, but other Asian cuisines), the fact that they offer American desserts and, by far the best thing about Shanghai Kitchen, is their service. They are friendly, speak clearly, efficient and accurate. If I'm ordering Chinese food, I'm ordering from Shanghai Kitchen. read more

We ordered a few dishes, hot and sour soup was good but the other two dishes were not. Beef in Chili oil was like a greasy soup. Too much grease for me to eat more than one bite. The Beef with Eggplant was bland and lacked salt. First time I ever had a Chinese dish that needed salt. But the worst part was the packaging. The lid was broken on the Beef with Chili Oil and it spilled over during the drive home and leaked into the bottom of the bag. So when I lifted the bag, all the food went right through the bottom causing the Chili Oil to spill leaving me with a greasy mess on my floor mat. This place is definitely not 5 stars. My girlfriend who happens to be Chinese was also very disappointed. read more

I was introduced to Shanghai Kitchen by my friend who is from China and it's by far the best authentic Chinese food I've ever eaten. My absolute favorite dish is the Beef with Napa in Hot Chili Oil (caution: hot!!). Other favorite dishes include Dandan Mien, Cumin Beef/Lamb, there are 2 duck appetizers that I really enjoy but can't recall the names. The scallion pancakes and soup dumplings are also really good picks - the scallion pancakes are really nice to cut some of the chili oil in the dishes. Don't come to Shanghai Kitchen for any of the typical American 'Chinese' food dishes...this is a Shanghai/Szcheuan restaurant, not a Sweet and Sour chicken restaurant! read more

Honestly, I was hoping for more. The reviews on here were better than average, and considering it's close enough to where I live, I figured to give it a chance. I ordered takeout, which admittedly, may have taken away somewhat from the experience. The dining room is nice for strip mall fare, and I get the feeling the dishes may taste a little better fresh out of the kitchen. As per another reviewer I ordered the Royal Thai Fried Rice, a Schezuan tofu and steamed chicken dumplings. The tofu was the standout. Tender tofu and flavorful vegetables made it my favorite. It may have been steep for $9 or so, but overall, it was tasty. The royal fried rice was OK, there were three shrimp, a chicken breast and a mound of fried rice in the container, but the chicken tasted a bit suspect. The steamed dumplings didn't taste steamed at all -- rather microwaved as the exterior was rubbery -- and the dumpling middle tasted like it was fresh from the Sysco truck. All in all, it was a decent Chinese experiment. Not one I'll go back too soon, but I may go back nonetheless. read more

I would like to preface this review by acknowledging the fact that i have been coming to this establishment for YEARS and had never had a sour experience with the old waiting staff. They were attentive and helpful and we always left with full bellies and big smiles. It was all peaches and cream until my last meal there, which happened to be yesterday. Throughout the time my boyfriend and i were there the mannerisms of the lone waitress were questionable at best. My boyfriend and i are of Hispanic and African American decent and to be honest, this woman treated us as if we were an inconvenience to her. When we arrived she sat us in the very back corner of the room, closest to the bathrooms, completely out of the way of any and everyone in the restaurant. At first i thought nothing of it, until she brought over a jug of water.... we were the only table that got one. Again at first glance it seems like nothing, but being sat away from everyone, and being the only table given a pitcher of water was really off putting as i began to suspect she was not to happy to be serving people of our colors. I kept trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but as we tried to order she wouldn't even look at us, when we thanked her time and time again she never once even acknowledged our existence. She did everything in her power to come to our table as few times as possible and the couple times she did stop by it was to grab plates, look as though she was being tortured, and to continue her cold- awkward and silent disproval of us being there. I would also like to make a point that there were 4 or 5 other tables being served by our same waitress, who all appeared to be of Caucasian decent, and not one of them was being treated in any of the same ways that we were. It was like this one waitress was two completely different people by the way she was acting towards my significant other and i vs. the other guests. The food has always been a pleasure but after a dinner service like that, i left with a more or less putrid taste in my mouth. Racism is not necessarily someone directly calling you a slur but in the way they carry themselves around you (i.e sitting us in the very back corner, acting like we don't exist, etc.) Black and Brown lives matter. I cannot wait to give them a 5-star before I step out of the beautiful and exquisite restaurant. The decoration is full of traditional Shanghai style which makes you travel back to 1930s. I've been to many restaurants in Shanghai, it's still hard to find a place with historical feeling like this. Moreover, the food in Shanghai Kitchen is very delicious and worthful. I personally recommend the Dynasty fish and Duck with Brown Sauce. The bamboo soup with rib, pork belly and smoked pork there is totally authentic Shanghai style. My husband, his parents and I drove from west of Denver to try this restaurant, and unfortunately for us, it was not worth the drive at all. The soup dumplings were terrible. They must have been previously frozen, they were bunched together in the steam tray, so were very difficult to remove without tearing, spilling what (very little) broth contained inside. Also they were served with the wrong kind of vinegar and ginger, so the flavor was all wrong. The scallion pancakes were deep fried instead of pan-fried, also a disappointment. My husband's parents are from Hong Kong and we have eaten Chinese food with them all over the world. We know good Chinese food when we have it, and this is just not it. We won't be back. read more

This place has one server that's absolute fire. She's always multi-tasking, carrying a bunch of plates and taking orders. I like to order the Gan Bian Siji Dou, basically fried green beans with pickled veggies. I'll compliment it with the Peking Pork Chops, very delicious. They're breaded meat with a sweet and sour sauce. If I'm feeling it, I'll also get the Xiao Long Bao, soup dumplings. Also, don't forget to get white rice!! You can mix the green beans and peking pork chops into a bowl of white rice for a delicious combination! Overall, a good experience, I've only seen it super packed on Christmas Eve. read more
