I thought this restaurant had permanently closed down and I was so sad because we loved ordering from them. It appears that they recently re-opened, possibly under new management. I'm happy to report that the food is still as good as ever. I did a happy dance when I found them on GrubHub. We ordered the salt and pepper chicken. I'd previously tried it before but only the chil version which is INCREDIBLY hot (but delicious). I called them today and they confirmed they were able to prepare it not spicy. Total game changer! I was able to eat the chicken without a problem. It was as delightful as I remember minus the heat. Notes of cinnamon in it with perfect blend of self and pepper. And so crispy! My yet additional review of Shanghai I felt was needed to ensure all fans are aware of one thing....SHANGHAI (and its proprietor Simon) IS BACK!!! The original menu is fully in tact, as good as ever, but with the welcome addition of hot-pot dinning. Choices of ingredients are beautifully curated in the most appealing DIY fashion, for each diner to select and determine the amount of greens, protein and such that is desired as well as what type broth is of interest. This dining style allows one to 'check many boxes' of individual preferences or avoidances. To my knowledge, no other Asian restaurant in the area is offering hot-pot dining in this way. We have driven down this road several times and recently wanted to stop and dine in Shanghai restaurant. Small and quiet Restaurant, the space is comfortable as you want to eat there. Surrounding the wall decor, there are small Business cards that read " 5 cats = free soup dumplings." Very unique and fun wallpaper, I found it remarkable at least over 100 have been part of the decor. The food was homemade and made tastefully without a lot of oil. The Wonton noodles was not made with egg noodles. Everything was fresh and for such a cold night, Shanghai restaurant hit the spot. Ordered takeout of Crab and pork soup dumplings, Shanghai shao mai dumplings, beef noodle soup and garlic cucumbers. The only items I enjoyed were the soup dumplings and cucumbers. There was something about the flavors of the shao mai I did not like but couldn't put a finger on. The general tsao's was very salty, and I like salty food. Entrees were $17 and you get a small foil container. The dumplings are comically small; for $9 you get basically a sample. Soup dumplings aren't anything to write home about. The vegetable dumplings were actually pretty gross. There are other places in Fort Lee that blow them out of the water dumpling wise. The crispy pork was good, very crunchy, but nothing remarkable. I wouldn't eat here again especially for the price. By contrast, I have spent this much money at TS Ma in Wyckoff and received better food and more of it. Overall, food isn't that good and the value is awful. read more

Tried : 1) Shredded Eggplant w/ garlic - Not what I was expecting in the it had too much Chinese spices - I thought I tasted "Mala"spice. Some may actually love this, but that just personally not for me. I was expecting a very regular stir-fried eggplant with garlic hahaha. I was craving some Chinese food in NJ and stumbled upon this restaurant. It's a bit small inside, but they have a few outdoor tented tables as well. We were seated quickly on a Sunday afternoon at 1PM. We ordered the sweet and sour pork ribs, string beans, soup dumplings, and pan fried dumplings. The soup dumplings weren't my favorite. The dough was a bit chewy and dry, and they had minimal broth, but they tasted okay. The string beans and pan fried dumplings were pretty good. The sweet and sour spare ribs were so tender and flavorful! The only thing I'll say is that the food is a bit on the oilier side, but I didn't mind it too much. Really nice food here - can't complain about a hole in the wall that feels pretty dingy even by Asian cafeteria level standards. But they can make some good soup dumplings and that's worth coming here for alone. I mean it's not like Ding Tai Fong level (in Asia specifically) kind of stuff but it's about as good as you'll get around this area (and in NYC in general). The honorable mention item though goes to the hot oil spicy dumplings as the flavor is very authentic and has a great kick to it. The scallion pancakes here were kick ass though. It was not artery clogging greasy shit like what you get in the local takeouts and it had an almost airy quality to it that made it taste super awesome. This is a must get. The vegetables we ordered were fine and the regular dumplings were okay. But the items I mentioned above are the must gets (the wonton noodles were ok but it's the stuff up top that's worthy of stuffing your face with). Generally speaking really nice food and the folks here are pretty busy but attentive. If you want decent soup dumplings, come here! read more

Small place with parking in the back. Met a friend for lunch on a weekday and we were the only guests in the place. We were greeted right away and served pretty quickly. Tried the spicy dim sum, pork belly and reg dim sum. All were decent. I will definitely return to try other dishes. Very plain with indoor and outdoor seating. The worst take out I've had in a while. The general taos were like bite size rocks, overcooked with a decent sauce. The beef udon noodles, dumplings, vegetables were all water logged, overcooked and bland. Order said delivery in 35-40 mins and they were here in 15 mins. We went for a Saturday lunch, The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived. They have a FREE parking lot in the back. There are both indoor and outdoor (in booths) seating available. Their menus have few dim sum and lots of great Sichuan dishes. We tried the shrimp dumpling, pea shoot leaves, eggplants, Sichuan cold noodles and home style tofu. All items were served pretty quickly. Except the cold noodles, we loved all the other items. The eggplant had an amazing sweet and spicy taste. I haven't dined in here for a while but their takeout is just as delicious as I remembered the food to be. The pan fried dumplings have a nice crispy outer shell mixed with a little bit of a chew and a burst of meaty flavor. The soup dumplings are not recommend for takeout as they tend to stick to one another pretty quickly. I love their veggies now, they are not overly oily and are well seasoned. So glad the restaurant installed individual heated tents for outdoor dining (there are five tents set up that can seat up to 4 people each). Restaurant itself is pretty small and there are a few tables should patrons choose to sit inside. Got there on a Sat around 12:30pm and glad we got seated inside a tent right away. It was very windy and luckily the tent was pretty sturdy. It was a really cool dining experience. Staff told us right away to turn on the heated lamp above us which kept us warm the whole time. I did still need to have my coat on. Hand sanitizer was available which was a nice touch. Disposable utensils (tea cups, chopsticks, spoons and bowls) were provided. Saw the staff disinfected our table right after we left for the next group of customers. Awesome! We got two orders of the crabmeat soup dumplings. While they were very flavorful, I preferred super thin skin although my fiancé actually loved these slightly thicker ones. The scallion pancake was very crispy and tasty though a bit greasy. The wonton soup was delicious though in a small bowl. The free tea in a cute pot was surprisingly amazing!!! Staff was very friendly and attentive, and food came out quickly. We got a reward card for a free order of soup dumplings after five visits. Only one unisex restroom inside. There is plenty (metered) parking right outside the restaurant. A small, hole-in-the-wall type eatery that specializes in Shanghainese breakfast and dishes. Came here for lunch on a weekday and the place was pretty full. Service was good and quick. Our food came within 5 minutes of us ordering. We got a soy milk, crispy dough (you tiao), pancake crispy dough roll, scallion pancake w/ beef, pork shank, soup dumplings, and Chinese water spinach. For the most part the food was pretty good, though nothing was exceptional. The one thing that was not good was the you tiao. It was very different than the you tiao I've had at Taiwanese and HK restaurants. It was much denser and not as crispy. So that as a disappointment. Soup dumplings were good, but as good as the ones at nearby Soup Dumplings Plus. Their small dishes range from $5-$8, entrees from $10-$15. So the price is pretty reasonable.
