Decent Chinese food for being close to Times Square. We tried the pan fried pork buns, soup dumplings, house special fried rice, pork belly baos and chili wontons. Out of the five, the pork buns and the soup dumplings were the best. They had steaming hot soup and the skin on the soup dumplings were nice and thin but didn't rip. They only came in quantities of 4 which is sadly really small and not great value for the price. The fried rice was also delicious, and while I liked the spicy wontons I didn't like that the peanut sauce took away from the spicy flavor. I think the pork belly bao is worth skipping because I found this to be pretty boring and uninteresting compared to others I've had. The pork belly itself was kind of thin and not the chunky kind you'd expect. I was also a bit disappointed to find out that if you want chili oil, you have to pay for it. It's only $1, but still, I've never been to a Chinese restaurant that charged for this so that was very unusual.
I really like the soup dumpling. The rice cake was decent. The wonton was too heavy on the peanut sauce. The crab meat pan-fried bun was just OK. The service is fine. The place is clean.
Stopped in for lunch today and was very happy. Cute little place with nice service staff and a huge menu. We ordered Beef with long hot peppers and the house special pork and crab soup dumplings. This was authentic food, and delish!! We'll be back to experience more of this menu!
I came here to try the pan fried soup dumplings which were okay, but I still prefer the steamed soup dumplings instead. We came here for an early dinner and the restaurant was pretty full. We also ordered crab soup dumplings, mini wonton soup, and scallion pancakes. The best part of the meal was the crab soup dumplings which had thick enough skin that didn't break when you grab them, filled with lots of meat and soup. The scallion pancakes didn't have any scallions in it and just tasted like fried oil. The pan fried soup dumplings have a very thick outer skin that make it difficult to bite into. The service was good and they are able to turn tables over quickly to get people seated. Overall, I would choose another restaurant over this one if you're in the area.
I stumbled upon a new years until lunar new year dine in promotion (on social media) for either their pork soup dumplings or pork pan fried buns for 1$ each. 4 dumplings for 4$ (1 promo per person). The food was incredible and made super fresh to order. My favorite was the pan fried buns - they fry the top of the bun instead of the bottom with an amazing crisp. Hot soup is prone to gushing out of the bun, so consume with caution so you avoid burning your tongue. 100% recommend getting those pan fried buns. The soup dumplings were also good, but not as memorable as the pan fried buns (shengjianbao). They do the noodles pretty well as well - the only disappointment was the tofu crab sauce dish that I ordered. The tofu/sauce felt bland and lacked flavor. Despite that, the pan fried buns just rocked it outta the park for me so much I still say it's 5 stars in my book. The interior was also very comfy for dine in - they started using ipads for customers to order from - and the pictures helped a lot in the ordering process. Love the deals, love the flavors and price - especially in this part of town!
Shanghainese street food gem in Midtown! Came for the savory pork mooncake -- flaky, juicy, fresh out of the oven, and only $4! Also grabbed their $1 pan-fried soup dumplings -- some of the best pan-fried soup dumplings I've had in the city. Everything felt super authentic, from the vegetarian duck to the rice cakes with shepherd's purse. Prices are great, portions generous. Perfect for a quick lunch or craving some comfort bites. Will definitely be back -- and no need to go all the way to Flushing!
Pretty good! We ordered the Braised Beef Noodle, Shredded Pork Noodle Soup, Pork Xioalongbao (Soup Dumplings), and regular pan-fried pork dumplings. Both of the soups were good and were a good portion to even share if you're getting another food item. The braised beef noodle soup had a clean broth, which was refreshing. The Shredded Pork Noodle soup didn't have much flavor, it was salty, and it didn't have much pork. Both of the dumplings were good, but nothing crazy. The service was great, and the staff was super nice! The place is cute!
TLDR: Pan fried soup dumplings = BIG YUM. FOOD: I came here with four friends, and we shared a bunch of things, which is definitely the way to do it. Everything we got was very good. We ordered a variety of different soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, and a few veggie dishes. For the pan fried dumplings, we got pork and cheesesteak flavors, I know that sounds weird, but both were good! SERVICE: Really good. Prompt and super nice! AMBIANCE: Largely simple but overall nice. There are a few details, which I was surprised by, like chandeliers with a Tiffany blue color around them, quite elegant. TIP: I think the ideal number of people to come with to this restaurant is a total of four. Most of the dumpling dishes come in sets of four, so if everyone wants to be able to try stuff, 5 is an awkward number. OVERALL: Will definitely come back when I am craving pan fried dumplings!!
If you're on the hunt for pan-fried pork buns with an EXTRA THIN wrapper, I've found the winner--Shanghai Time serves up sheng jian bao with the thinnest wrapper I've ever had in NYC. I visited Shanghai Time about two years ago, and their SJB is still at the very top of my favorites list no matter how many new shanghainese spots I've tried since. Like how could they pack so much juicy broth into a paper-thin bao dough, and still get the bottom crunchy? The location is super convenient - in the heart of Times Square and only 3 minutes away from Port Authority. ＊Pan Fried Pork Soup Dumpling 生煎包 $9.95 ＊Dan Dan Noodle 擔擔麵 $9.95 ＊Steamed Vegetable Dumpling 翡翠素餃 $8.95 ＊Shredded Steak Truffle Fried Rice黑松露牛肉炒飯 $18.95 ＊Little Rabbit Milk Pudding 小白兔奶凍 $8.95 They ran out of crab meat sheng jian bao when I went, but I would definitely go back to try that one! While their sheng jian bao is absolutely S-tier, the rest of the food we tried felt pretty average in comparison. Dan dan noodle was aromatic and flavorful, yet the truffle fried rice could have a bit more of the truffle flavor. I do remember their shanghainese stir fried rice cake (薺菜肉絲炒年糕) was good though.

The $1 pan fried buns was good...well the first order we got. The rest of the food was so so. The cucumbers were okay. The wooded ear mushroom needed more flavoring. And the rice cake was too salty. It was okay I guess. Mainly came for the pan fried bun special. The second batch we got wasn't as good and it tasted like the bottom was fried in really old oil so the bottom was extra brown.
More like 3.5/5 but I think it was good for the area, but just not amazing for Shanghainese in general. Service was great though and the staff were super attentive! - garlic cucumber salad was a 4/5 - tasted very flavorful and was a good palette cleanser - chili wontons 4/5 - mixture had a lot of veggies in it and i like the flavoring but my friends thought it was too salty - shanghainese rice cake 2/5 - rice cakes were overcooked and way too soft - house special fried rice 4/5 - can't really go wrong with this dish and it had the typical essential shanghainese flavor - pan fried soup dumplings 3/5 - not very crispy nor soupy and the soup lacked flavor - shrimp rolls 3/5 - just not a heavy shrimp flavor and i wished their side sauce was tartar instead - custard buns 2/5 - buns were soft but the custard filling didn't taste like much
Was brought here by an instagram post that my friend saw and it looked so good on screen. We ended up being pretty disappointed with our experience... so don't always trust what you see on social media! We ordered the pan fried pork soup dumplings, the regular Shanghai pork soup dumplings, cold sesame noodles, and the Shanghainese rice cakes with pork. As I'm writing this, I'm realizing all our proteins were pork haha. Both soup dumplings we felt was a must when trying any new (new to us) Shanghai place. The regular ones I'd give a 4/5 for flavor but also because one arrived popped. The pan fried ones were very filling because the dough was thicker than we expected. It doesn't compare to the same dish from other places with super thin and crispy skin, which is personally my preference. So 2/5 stars for that. The cold noodles (2/5) - we ordered because it was 95 degrees out with high humidity and we just needed something cold and refreshing. It was cold is but not refreshing and the flavor just wasn't what we expected- it leaned towards the saltier side than peanut buttery. Some cucumbers on top would have made it better. By far, our favorite was the rice cakes with pork. We happily enjoyed all of it. The texture and chewiness of the rice cakes, combined with the very savory flavors were great! We also appreciated the couple pieces of vegetables that it came with. (4.5 out of 5 stars - for the flavor it was good but the portion size for this shared dish was smaller than when compared to other Shanghai places. The interior was kind of decorated. Service was good, it's more compared to a cafe than a restaurant. When you come in and are seated, you order food through the iPad and "send it to the kitchen". The food does take while to come. During your meal, they pretty much leave you alone. You can "call waitstaff" from the top of the iPad if you need something. After your meal, you ask for the check and they bring a receipt to you. Overall, I wouldn't come back for the food. It was okay at best.
Ambiance (5/5): The place is pristine, bright, and welcoming! It feels like I'm a princess dining in a tea shop. There are a few small tables and then towards the back, there more dining options. Service (5/5): The wait staff use tablets to order at the table and pay with which expedites the process. Additionally, since the establishment is small, we were attended to often. Our order is printed on a slip and tracked whenever a dish is delivered. The whole experience felt seamless. Steamed shanghai pork soup dumplings (5/5): These were delicious! The skin was thick enough that NONE of my dumplings ripped before reaching my spoon. The broth was flavorful and just the right amount of saltiness to enjoy on its own or with some sauce. Pan-fried crabmeat soup dumplings (4/5): Also very flavorful and plenty amount of soup. However, the weight of the dumpling was so heavy and hard to manage IMO. The fried bottoms was still chewy and delicious. I would always opt for the original steamed. Table includes chili oil, vinegar, and soy sauce for dipping. Wontons with chili oil and peanut sauce (3/5): Not the best wonton as it was not super flavorful Suggestion to restaurant: Provide sauce dipping bowls so we don't have to keep making the sauce for each dumpling. read more

After waited 20mins to walk in pick up, the guy told me sorry, cuz the lady said I'm outside & he didn't see me outside while I was across the street in my car. So he didn't out in the order grrrrr. Apologize, place my order and ask me wait another 10mins. Same price as Chinatown but half the quantity. Surprisingly is almost full house inside. Is good that it open till 2am. Now a day is hard to even find a restaurant open after 10pm. I was walking back & forth to my car & the guy came out pass me my order once it was done. Only ordered 2 steamed pork soup dumplings as my daughter was craving. The dumplings is overly salty. Can't said for others items as I didn't try. read more

Came here for to pick up lunch the other day and wow these are tasty! I especially liked the pan fried soup dumplings. I think my one mistake was not ordering online beforehand since they did take a while to make. A tad bit pricey if you are hoping to get full, but I'll probably come back to grab some dumplings to treat myself again since it's a short walk from my office. read more

I saw this place on TikTok and it looked good. Me and my friend waited over 30 minutes for our food, even though we ordered takeout. The sheng jian bao and other foods were decent UNTIL we found a really big piece of plastic in our food. I would never complain about a restaurant but was shocked at the plastic in my food. It was inside the pan fried soup dumpling and when I bit into it, it scrapped the top of my mouth. read more

Delicious food and great ambience. Perfect place to go if youre looking to have conversations and actually hear each other. The pan fried dumplings are definitely the star of the show. We also enjoyed the noodles and soup dumplings. We finished with the mango crepe pie which was exquisite- just sweet enough and delicious. read more

We were in the New York, wanted dinner, I of course, looked at my yelp app... and this place was highly recommended. And I see why. It was very tasty. We knew it was a good sign when we got there and almost everybody it was there was Asian, and they all looked very happy. Gobbling down the food. My friend Jill and I sat down picked out choices, I was very sad because they were already out of the beef curry wontons apparently those are fabulous and they were completely sold out. So that's a note for next time. But I did get the beef soup dumplings in a cooking skillet. I got the pork belly with bok choy noodle soup and the salted chicken. All which were amazing my friend Jill got the cur noodle shrimp and the pot stickers with soup inside. Both of us were very excited with our choices. We didn't think there was anyway we were gonna be able to eat all that but somehow we managed. Jill loved her curry, shrimp and noodles so much but she was using my noodles to sop up, her broth, she said it was to die for and she wasn't gonna waste any of it. I packed away all the chicken, and both of us at the potstickers and dumplings. It was so tasty and the people were very friendly. I highly recommend. read more

Like everyone else is writing, the Pan Fried Soup Dumpling / Sheng Jian Bao is not to be missed here. Super flavorful broth and a delectable crispy bottom - I would argue this is the main point of coming to Shanghai time. They sometimes take a while to come out though as they are being made fresh. Outside of the above, the food was pretty solid with a little bit of the Midtown tax included price-wise. The scallion pancake beef roll was super crispy and tasty. Curiously, the pancake didn't go all the way around the filling but it didn't make it any less delicious. XLB was about par with the other offerings in the Midtown area which has a surprising number of options. Service was friendly and attentive. We stopped by for a late dinner on a Saturday night (~8pm) and had no problem getting a table. The most impressive part about this place is how FAST they are- dishes started coming out within minutes of ordering! Overall, everything was alright- we tried the steamed soup dumpling combo, pan-fried soup dumplings, wontons in chili oil, stir-fried rice cakes, and Taiwanese pork chop on rice. I have had better elsewhere (more flavor, thinner dumpling skins, etc.) but everything was good. The Taiwanese pork chop unfortunately lacked that trademark crispiness. Opened six months ago, Shanghai Time is a lovely restaurant located on West 38th Street in the heart of the fabric and trimming stores. Jennifer and I were celebrating my birthday and both of us are partial to Chinese cuisine. I had researched and found this place. We feasted on pork soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, vegetable spring rolls, pork belly stew and Shanghainese noodles with scallion sauce. The steamed shrimp dumplings had thin translucent skin and one that I could eat nicely that I ordered a second helping. Here the specialty is the Pan Fried Soup Dumplings which needs to be eaten piping hot but as I am still on a lukewarm and cold diet we decided to get it on our next visit. Greg, the server, was efficient and explained the opening of this restaurant . Lunar New Year decorations gave the interior a festive look. A fairly large clean gender neutral restroom is at the back. We plan to return to taste more of the offerings on the menus. read more

Heard about this restaurant's famous pan fried pork soup dumpling for a long time. Finally got a chance to try it. It is delicious and is the closest version of the ones I used to have in Shanghai. We also ordered crabmeat and pork bund dumplings. Lack flavor of crabmeat but not bad either. The veggie noodle is very tasty too. read more

My Chinese friend is in town and we went here. Ordered 5 star combo soup dumplings, House Special Pan Fried Pork Soup Dumpling, Wonton In Red Chili Oil, Soy Milk and Lemonade. So good and authentic. Highly recommended and we'll definitely come back! read more
Stopped by around 4pm after visiting an exhibition nearby and surprisingly it was quite full, but we got seated right away. Their menu is filled with pictures and we just wanted to order everything. We ordered the 5 star combo steamed soup dumplings, pan fried pork soup dumplings, wonton red chili oil, scallion pancake with beef brisket, roast pork buns, ox brisket and the beef stew noodle soup. The soup dumplings were juicy and hot. The pan fried pork soup dumplings were not overly thick and was crispy with the right amount of soup inside. The wonton red chili oil was not as spicy as I thought it would be but they also added peanut sauce on top which added a nice twist to it. The scallion pancake with beef brisket was hot and crispy. The beef stew noodle soup was super flavorful and the beef stew was tender. Given the area that this food establishment is in, the food is pretty solid and reasonably priced. read more

Tried this place today for the first time. The food was amazing, I went shortly after they opened and had the Shanghai hot pepper beef with udon noodles and the wontons in red hot oil. First I want to point out that there were a lot of Asian people eating here which is always a good sign when going to this type of place. The dumplings were unlike any I have ever tried, the sauce was a curious mixture sesame oil and red pepper, the filling had pork and spinach and seasoning. The noodle dish had strips of beef that tasted like good steak, thick udon noodles, hot green peppers and the perfect amount of spice, not too hot but not at all weak. The service was ok, not the best but acceptable. You order your food from an iPad. The decor was simple but cute, all in all a very nice experience. I will definitely be returning to try other dishes. And, oh, I almost forgot, the "Amazing" Lemonade is excellent. I totally recommend this place to those who love authentic Shanghai cuisine. read more

OMG. nothing but good things to say about this place, after studying in Shanghai, I have been on the hunt for the best pan fried dumplings ever since, however, I have been constantly let down in the past until this moment. The pan fried pork dumplings at this place were super comparable to the ones in shanghai and this place deserves all the hype from tiktok. Their soup dumplings, beef noodle soup, cucumbers, and scallion pancakes were also very yummy and reasonably priced! Would highly recommend this place and J will for sure be revisiting! read more

I'm glad I didn't judge this place by the Yelp rating. The restaurant I tried yesterday had hundreds of great reviews over 4 stars but the food was not good at all. This restaurant doesn't have the highest rating but the food was very good. Try this place if you are in the neighborhood! It's very reasonable. read more
