Have I ever had Indian food? Yes. Lots. This place is unique. It's quaint. It's extremely affordable. It's delicious but flavors are just different in the best way. You really have to try it yourself understand. I had cauliflower, my husband had butter chicken with garlic naan. Appetizer was mixed fried. The absolute star of the show was the free appetizers. Crisp bites with delicious fresh sauces. I'm telling you. If you're in Dorchester you need to stop and give this place a try!

Shanti had been highly recommended to me by co-workers and friends. Food was so good! I think pricier than most Indian places but worth it. I was surprised at how empty it was on a Sunday 5:30PM - my friend and I were the only ones dining in for the whole 1.5 hours we were there. There were some take out orders, however, so perhaps it's more of a takeout place. When you arrive, you are greeted with some chips and dip. Between the two of us, we got the Shanti Special, korma, saag paneer, and garlic naan, which we intended to bring home half for our SO's at home. It was definitely a good amount of food, came out super hot, and the presentation was appealing. The server at the end was very concerned and disappointed that we had only eaten a little of the food, and she was quite worried that we did not enjoy it. We explained to her we were intentionally saving some. You can tell she cared a lot about the food there! She nicely brought us containers and bags for our left overs and let us split the check despite us putting everything onto one bill. Street parking was easy enough to find. Will be back to try other dishes on the menu! Definitely a standout Indian place in the Boston area.

As a Bangladeshi American born and raised in NY. I can tell you, this place is some of the best Indian food I've had. The food is delicious and authentic. You can tell it is fresh and you can feel the char and tomato in the butter chicken. The prices are very reasonable especially for the amount of food you get. My wife and I got butter chicken, naan, bhuna lamb and an appetizer platter. It was so much food that we had to take the dishes, rice and some of the appetizers home. Service is prompt. Restaurant is definitely a nice place to take the wife or family for dinner. It is quiet and upscale but not too fancy, somewhere in between. Had a great time, will definitely be back when we are in town. I can see why they've won best of Indian food awards for many years

Honestly, Shanti is hands down the best Indian restaurant around Dorchester/Boston area that I ever tried. Indian cuisine is on my list of top 5 favorite type of food to indulge. Normally I would get chicken tikka masala (extra spicy ) or butter chicken. But last night, I tried their tandoori chicken for the first time and it was amazing! I've had tandoori chicken before from other places but Shanti was so much more well seasoned. Of course , I had to get it spicy. Both the flavor and spice was amazing . You can either get it as a whole chicken or half chicken. I believe it was $17-$18 for half a chicken and it's probably $35-$36 for the whole chicken. Half chicken feeds 2-3 people. It usually comes with either rice or plain naan. TIP - MAKE SURE TO ASK FOR EXTRA LEMON. IT PAIRS SO WELL WITH THE CHICKEN. As always, always ask for their condiments. All their chutney sauces is amazing. It's a must have.

Old Tandoori chicken covered in gravy instead of the fresh batch of Butter chicken I actually ordered

Usually love the butter chicken here but tonight when I ordered my usual instead of making me a fresh order they gave me a bunch of old tandoori chicken pieces covered in sauce and hoped I wouldn't notice. I very much noticed and it did not taste good. Whoever in the kitchen decided to pass off old meat on a Sunday... please don't ever do that again. It's dishonest and the irony is your actual butter chicken dish is good.

Shanti is definitely the best indian food I've tried in GBA. Is it amazing food? No. The meat dishes we had were all overcooked, and gave the distinct impression of chicken being added in after the fact. However, the spice/flavor profiles were generally good, and that is hard to find in the area. I'd definitely come back if I had a hankering for classic indian restaurant-style dishes e.g. tandoori food, meat curries.

Chicken Biryani, Saag Paneer, Dal Makhani, Naan, Tandoori Roti, Chicken Tikka

Did a big to go order to give them a fair shake while finding what the local go-tos are going to be. We got dal makhani, saag paneer, chicken biryani, and tandoori chicken (chicken tikka). Along with roti and naan. They didn't ask how spicy to make anything, and honestly everything was eerily mild. To the point of being under seasoned. Nothing was really punchy and if it did carry a flavor it was a baseline funky spice that was the same across every item. It was all edible, with the exception of the dal which was too salty, and really unpleasant. That was a bummer because it's a favorite of mine. Adding cream to it the next day helped to Robert the salt down. So, while I'm definitely going to be eating the leftovers, we'll keep looking elsewhere for a go to for Indian. We already have Singh's Roti for "West Indian" (Trinidadian, in their case) around the corner from them in the meantime I guess.

Ordered takeout: chicken tikka masala and chicken vindaloo with an order of garlic naan - all classics! Both were really good, flavorful, and I was going to shoot myself because I didn't ask for mild because most places, the spice level is higher than normal. To my surprise, I'm glad their average spice was nothing.

We came during the evening, the service was amazing and loved the vibes inside the place. We ordered the garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, lamb korma and of course mango lassi! The garlic naan was super tasty and so was the chicken tikka masala!

Whether you are a student, a local or just someone in the South End and Back Bay area looking for good affordable Indian food in Boston, this place consistently delivers. Worth mentioning upfront for students -- Mela offers the weekday lunch buffet for $11.99 with a valid student ID, available through March 2026. The regular weekday buffet is $14.95 and the weekend buffet is $17.95. For a full Indian buffet in the South End Boston that is genuinely one of the better deals you will find in the city right now. The ambiance was warm and inviting, the kind of place that feels comfortable the moment you walk in. The owners were friendly and you could tell they genuinely take pride in what they do. We started with the aloo tikki chaat which was really well done. The balance of spice and sweetness was spot on and the depth of flavor made it feel thoughtfully prepared. It is one of those dishes where every bite feels complete and it set the tone for everything that followed. The mango lassi was just as good. Thick, rich and satisfying without being overly sweet. It felt authentic and filling, not the watered down version you sometimes get at other places. For the main we went with the vegetarian dinner for two which is one of the best value options on the menu at this South End Indian restaurant. It comes with soup, two gravies, basmati rice, naan, raita and two desserts, so you get a full and complete meal rather than just a single dish. We chose the malai kofta and saag paneer. The malai kofta was the standout, creamy, rich and deeply flavorful in a way that genuinely reminded us of food in India. The saag paneer had a fresher and lighter taste that balanced the richness of the kofta perfectly. The naan came out hot from the tandoor, soft and slightly doughy, and worked beautifully with both gravies. Everything on the table felt cohesive and well thought out. The desserts were the highlight of the whole meal. The malai kulfi is made in house and you can taste exactly why that matters. Rich, smooth and perfectly sweet. The gulab jamun came out warm and soft enough that it melted the moment it hit your tongue. Both were outstanding and the kind of ending that makes you want to come back just for dessert. If you are a student at Northeastern, BU, Berklee or Emerson looking for affordable Indian food near campus, Mela is exactly the kind of place you want in your regular rotation. The student buffet deal alone makes it worth knowing about. Between the food quality, the warm atmosphere and the strong vegetarian friendly options at this affordable Indian restaurant in Boston, it is easy to see why this place has lasted nearly two decades. We featured our visit on Instagram @bostonvegeats where we cover the best vegetarian and vegan friendly spots around Boston and Mela earned its spot on the page without question.

I didn't try the goat curry, palak paneer or naan, but they looked pretty good too. Services was okay - one of the servers (manager?) was a bit rough around the edges but softened by the end. We're not too experimental and we're not big eaters so our order included garlic naan, lamb rogan josh, and chicken tikka masala with a beer and glass of chardonnay. The best recommendation; there wasn't a morsel left. We left pleasantly sated and walked across the street to our show. We had also bought jumbo shrimp from Costco, with heads to be the main course. (Her favorite!) This was an issue. Apparently these were disgusting and needed to be cleaned. There were so many shrimp. I'd slept exactly 1 hours the night b4 because my in-laws were jetlagged and wandering around the house and backyard at 3am. I'd also worked a full day. So I suggested take out for the main. It was unpopular, however there was no way I was letting MIL clean shrimp by herself for hours and no way I was spending the next two hours of my life helping her do it after working a full day and sleeping 1 hour. To give my husband credit, he researched this place extensively. We ordered the saag chicken, which was exceptional. It stood up to the other dishes on the table. (I have not ordered from an Indian restaurant in the Boston area that comes close to how good this spot was. My in-laws would have complained about every other spot. They liked this one.) Instead they thought it was great, and they are so difficult to please. Pray for me, tomorrow I gut perfectly lovely jumbo shrimp for their black vein and remove the head. (My husband is the one who bought these and paid extra for the head. He is doing extensive yard work involving a lot of heavy lifting, otherwise he'd be in charge of this job. I will also not be helping him, as was planned so he will suffer) Suffice it to say, 10/10 would recommend. Planning on adding it to my regular rotation. It will be approved by your Indian in-laws.
