He suggested this place in the West Village, but we couldn't get a table there at the time we wanted to go. Fortunately, I was able to find that they had another location in Midtown and we were able to get a table. I have never had Georgian food before and was excited to try it. From the second, we walked in our experience was excellent. The restaurant was very charming with a very chic feel. Our server was so gracious and helpful in explaining the menu. We tried several traditional dishes, and they were all out outstanding. The food was so flavorful. We had the eggplant rolls and the Adjaruli Khachapuri as an appetizer. Both were amazing! They left me wanting more. For the main course I had the Chanakhi (lamb stew). This dish was so delicious. The lamb was tender and the sauce was savoy, perfectly seasoned and had so much flavor. My daughter had the Shkmeruli (chicken with garlic sauce). This creamy garlic sauce was amazing. I need to figure out how to make it. My son had the Kupati (house made sausages). I can honestly saw these were some of the best sausages I've ever had. The flavor was so unique and delicious. My son's girlfriend, who is a vegan, had the cauliflower with walnut sauce. The cauliflower was roasted perfectly and the walnut sauce is like nothing I've ever had before. It was so creamy that it made me question whether or not it had dairy in it. Another hit. To finish it off, we had the Khinkali which are these huge soup dumplings with beef and pork filling. Our server told this traditionally they eat them at the end of a meal so we follow tradition. Fortunately, our server explained to us how to eat them by holding them upside down and taking a small bite and drinking the soup out. These were massive and more than I should've eaten after appetizers and a main course. Nevertheless, we enjoyed them thoroughly. I really enjoyed this restaurant and the experience. I felt like I experienced something new that I can't wait to come back to.

It has four dips and comes with 3 *tiny* little circles of cornbread. Read that again: 4 dips, only 3 tiny little pieces of bread. Adding insult to injury, they'll charge you $6 if you order a side of cornbread (and that side order is just 3 additional tiny little pieces, which still isn't enough bread for the appetizer dips). Free hospitality tip for Ubani: if you're charging $29 for dips, go ahead and provide the customer with enough bread for the dips instead of being so stingy. On the plus side: nice setting, nice servers, and the khachapuri is tasty enough. But I can't imagine returning - the value for money just isn't there. Management, please take note.

The khinkali were juicy, flavorful dumplings with that perfect burst of broth inside. I am a big fan of brothy dumplings; however, the dough was slightly thicker than I usually like. Nonetheless, flavor was good. The Adjaruli khachapuri was definitely the star of the meal! It was warm, cheesy, and incredibly creamy. I loved that you can add an egg on top, which makes it even richer and gives it that perfect velvety texture when mixed together. The adjapsandali (eggplant dish) was also delicious, with a great balance of vegetables and a kick of various spices. Highly recommend trying this place at least once with a group of friends or family!

I came away disappointed -- nothing on the plate tasted authentic. Both the salmon mtsvadi and the chicken tabaka tasted nerfed, like the spices had been dialed way down. What came through instead was mostly acidity -- heavy lemon and salt, across every dish, with none of the depth I was expecting. It would have helped if the dill and pomegranate had actually been part of the dish rather than sitting on the side as decoration. Maybe this is just an Americanized take on Georgian cuisine, but either way, I didn't like it. The ambience didn't help either. We were seated behind the bar, where the tables were packed in. The row of people seated at the bar were a bit rowdy, and the passage was so narrow we got bumped every few minutes.

It has an amazing fresh essence and reminded me of being at the edge of the sea and the fresh sea spray hitting you. It was perfect with the food! *Khinkali - I really LOVE dumplings and these were OUT OF THIS WORLD! The beef and pork blend was amazingly seasoned, tender and juicy, the broth inside the dumplings was warm and tasty. I even loved that they put some tips on the menu on how to eat them like a true Georgian and I took their advice and was in dumpling heaven! *Adjaruli - TRULY LOVED the tastiness of the this cheesy, eggy "bread bowl". When Maya brought this to our table she offered to stir it for us by blending the cheese and egg on top! WOOOOWWW!! There was literal toe curling happiness every time we ripped off a piece of the yummy warm bread and dipped it into the cheese and egg blend. So satisfying total comfort food!! *Lula Kebab - OH MY GODDDD TASTY! Litearlly the best lamb kebab I have EVER had. The lamb was tender, juicy and seasoned beautifully! The wrap it was in was soft, chewy and a perfect vessel to transport that yummy lamb into your mouth. We ordered this with the mashed potatoes and they were yummy as well!! When I got to the Williamsburg location and observed the door locked, lights off, and the interior like nobody was there (with no indication there would be no one coming), I was crestfallen. This restaurant defined popular Georgian food. It is one of the reasons I make a trek out to a neighborhood that I would not otherwise dare set foot in for more than an extended period of time. When I observed they also have a Manhattan location, I figured, okay, try them out, what the hell, maybe it will be fine. Three subway lines later (okay, I could have done it in two), and here is the result. Firstly, the service is amazing. The entire wait staff is warm, welcoming, intelligent, and passionate about what is served out of their kitchen. Liza may not be working here (or at least was not there during the time I was here), but the service is still first rate. Secondly, the interior space is more intimate than the Williamsburg location. It feels more Manhattan-y than Williamsburg-y, if that makes sense. Now that I got the non-food stuff out of the way, here comes the part you came for, the meal. I ordered five things here. You will see why later, it will make sense to you by the end. Khachapuri: My new favorite snack is a must at any Georgian restaurant. To say this is a calzone or a stromboli is being condescending to this lovely cheeseboat (had to do it). It is a little on the small side, but the cheese and texture is beautiful and I never once had to pick up a fork to eat it. Your server will even mix everything for you if you ask. Grade: A- Khinkali: Six to an order, just like at the Williamsburg location, they are tasty, but it is looser. They fall apart too quickly upon that first nibble. I know not to eat the knot, because when my server took my plate away after I was done eating them, he smiled wryly at me, knowing I did it right. Grade: B Chakapuli: Probably the weakest thing I ordered, the lamb is tasty, but also super fatty and super tender. I deliberately did not eat the sauce and some of the other bits because of the richness and the onions that were at the bottom of the dish. The fact it comes with two nice pieces of bread helps mitigate things, but I played it smart by just taking the big stuff and using the bread as a binder. Grade: B- Kharcho: A staple at any Georgian restaurant, this is essentially Lagman soup, but they use rice instead of noodles as their carb weapon of choice. The lamb is beautiful and the broth has a beautiful aroma and fragrance. It also comes with two nice pieces of bread to really soak in more flavor. This balanced out the out of balance Chakapuli. Grade: B+ Georgian White Wine Flight: Yes, I got a flight, four glasses of the restaurant's finest white wines. I had a glass for each of the meals that I ate. Each wine has its own character. My server even gave me a suggestion on how to go about drinking them. I know very little about wine, so I will not go much further than this. However, each wine I tasted, tasted better than the previous one. I do know Georgia is known for its wine, and by the end of the flight, I was starting to see why... maybe. Grade: A- That is not all. I also ordered a Honey Cake for dessert, because I know all too well that honey is the great equalizer in all things savory. This will put it all in its place, like Godzilla restoring the balance in an inhumane world. Honey Cake: One bite told me all I needed to know. It is outstanding. Well balanced, terrific flavor, outstanding texture, ridiculously, out of bounds in terms of how it should look and feel. This dessert may have ruined all things dessert for me for the time being. It is simply the best way to end a meal, and to go out on a high note. Grade: A+ -- Some of you may be saying, why would you do this? Why would you go all the way out here for this? 1.) Because I can, 2.) The experience is largely outstanding, and 3.) It is not always about those two, it is the adventure, and eating what I ate here gave me a sense of adventure, from start to finish. Stay classy Cheeseboat, I know you will be just fine until the Williamsburg location reopens, if it ever does. If not, your Manhattan location will do you justice.

Service was a little slow but nothing unforgivable considering it was a busy Saturday night. We split the Starter appetizer which has the most delicious array of sauces, including this garlic-buttery sauce I'm forgetting the name of that was so delicious I wanted to beg for the recipe to it. The only thing is we wished it came with more bread so we could continue to enjoy the sauces! Then we split the fried chicken sandwich, which was perfectly juicy. It's not hard to make a good chicken sandwich, but this one was a standout amongst some of the other restaurants we've tried in the area. Next, we got the adjaruli so we could try a taste of more traditional Georgian cuisine. This was yummy and came with a cute little table side presentation but it is VERY filling. My friend and I were only able to tackle half of it before we were leaning back holding our stomachs. A very rich meal that would pair well with more bread or something else on the side to cut that richness. Overall, this was super yummy and we will be coming back! Even if just for that sauce! So good and I look forward to exploring more of their menu!
