One thing that stood out was the use of citrus in their wraps. This is a nitpick, but the way they're wrapped in paper irks me; it's like they're wrapped with the paper rather than after. The King's Gyro Fries: Meat was seasoned well and I appreciate how there wasn't just feta and tzatziki. Though, the fries themselves could use some time in the fryer to crisp up. There are 2 shawarma kings in UDistrict so double check where you go! I went to the other one before and had positive experiences, so I decided to check this one out, probably different owners but similar offerings. This one is a bit easier to find parking as there is a somewhat sketchy parking lot that is probably free (park at your own risk) that saves a lot of headache especially in the weekdays when parking is pricy on the street. I got the shawarma plate as takeout (portion sizes are huge - you can get about 1.5 satisfying meals in one order) which included a generous portion of rice, lamb (you can choose beef, lamb, or chicken), some salad, hummus, and pita bread. Ordering as dine-in has a bit better presentation, but more or less similar experience. The lamb is a bit tough to chew at some parts, but otherwise flavorful and satisfying. The rice specifically was pretty good. Decent fast casual spot, good for a quick meal. read more

It's pretty rare that I write a review, and even more rare that I write a negative review, but my experience this evening at this Shawarma King warrants it. So, let me first say that I'm not from Seattle, I come from Pullman, a much smaller city on the other side of the state. While not totally bereft of culture, there are only a handful of restaurant options there that aren't your standard hamburgers or pizza fare. So, having moved recently to Seattle, I've been excited to try new things. I happened to be in the neighborhood and popped in here with my friend to get a bite. First, the good-- the place is decently clean, smells okay, and the service was friendly. The prices are pretty reasonable for the amount of food you get. The lighting was actually pretty nice-- soft, warm, enough to see well but not overwhelming. Unfortunately, that's all I can say in terms of positive remarks, because the food-- oh, god, the food. I have never had shawarma, but my friend has, and she assured me that what we received tonight was not typical by any means. I got a plate of lamb shawarma-- so, lamb, rice, something that I think was hummus, a bit of salad, and pita bread. My friend got a shawarma wrap. The lamb-- dry to the point of being almost desiccated, yet rubbery and difficult to chew. Virtually tasteless. When I say that the food here was bland, I don't mean that it wasn't exciting in the Epicurean sense. I mean that it literally tasted of nothing. The rice was fine, it was cooked to a decent consistency, but again had no taste. None. It was almost uncanny. You know in the Matrix when they're eating nutrient paste and complaining about how they miss the fake food from inside the Matrix because at least it tasted like something? This shawarma plate was that. It was nutrient paste, arranged to look like food. The hummus, again, same general issue. The pita bread tasted like packaged pita bread, because that's what it is. Unfortunately, that was the best part of the meal. I was actually really hungry, so I ate the plate, but I did so by dousing it in the sauce available on the table and then salting it heavily. Only then did it begin to approach something resembling a palatable meal. On top of all of that, the food was lukewarm, which I'm not even sure how they managed that because they cut the meat off of the rotating spindle that cooks it when you order it. The rice, the hummus-- I understand if that's not piping hot. The meat, though? The thing that was literally in a vortex of hot air two minutes before I put it in my mouth? Guys, I'm not a picky eater. I'll eat cup-o-noodles every day for lunch. I don't DO fine dining. But what I experienced here was so bad, it actually made me feel a little ill. It's like my body was beginning to question whether I was actually eating FOOD. I'm surprised that this place has four stars, and it really makes me wonder if we just caught them on a bad night. I almost feel bad for being this critical, but again I'm really not a picky eater. I don't have a refined palette, but I really had to choke this down. Serve your food warm, use some spices when you cook, and make sure your meat isn't mummified. Please. (And, yes, for those of you wondering THAT question-- I can taste and smell everything else just fine. It's not my senses.) read more

If you're looking for something quick- they typically have my food ready within 5 minutes! My go-to's are the Shawarma Plate (portion is generous-I always have leftovers for lunch the next day) Greek Fries and the Lamb Gyro sandwich meal (this meal comes with fries and a soda!) The chicken is by far our favorite, as there's always a generous amount of meat and seasoning is on point. The hummus that comes on all plates is also very good. Shawarma King has been my favorite place for shawarmas in Seattle for almost a decade. They were always open late, and it was a dependable place to grab a bite to eat after a bar crawl or club. This is a newer location (they have two locations on the same street sort of like Starbucks does with some of its cafes). Good news is that it's the same menu, same killer shawarma but in a newer space and a part of the Ave with better parking. If looking for something more substantial, the mixed grill is also solid. Every time I show up to pick up takeout, whoever works the front seems really confused about what the hell I'm talking about, even when they definitely received and fulfilled the order. Legitimately some of the worst food I've ever eaten. Most of it was technically edible, but totally lacking in any sort of distinct flavor. Fries were freezer-burnt, wraps were soggy, meat was dry and tasteless. Vegetables tasted like they'd been cut around a week ago, fries like they'd been sitting under a warmer for most of the day, completely unseasoned. The baklava barely resembled anything you might call "baklava". It was around 40 layers of filo pastry with a single layer of honeyed peanuts in the center. I took a single bite and had to spit it out immediately; it tasted as though the filo pastry had been coated in some sort of chemical sanitizer. Completely inedible. Not only that, but when one orders baklava, you expect hazelnuts, walnuts, and pistachios. The item wasn't even labelled as containing peanuts, and my partner has a peanut allergy, which could've been extremely dangerous had I not noticed. The falafel had this strange, bitter, baking-soda like flavour to them. Took a single bite and spat it out. Almost like someone included a bunch of raw lemon peel or uncooked dough inside of it. Gyro / shawarma is pretty standard (shawarma is a little dry), but the standouts for me have to be the very flavorful lamb shish kebab and juicy and tasty chicken shish kebab and beef kofta. I guess it depends on who is making the food. No consistency at all. Awesome food! I've eaten here quite a few times on my lunch break and for dinner at both locations and the staff are very friendly, efficient and everything looks clean. The Lamb or Chicken kabob and Kofta plates are usually what I get. The lamb and Chicken Kabob chunks are tender and juicy with a little taste of lime but it doesn't overwhelm the other flavors or taste like rubber like a lot of places I've tried that are more expensive.
