TLDR: Suspicious about a quote I had received from Big Wave for $3,123 in repairs to my blower I reached out to Shawn Lambert HVAC for a second opinion. I had troubleshot past the capacitor (good), and Big Wave recommended replacement of circuit card, fan, motor, and igniter. Why would all of those items break simultaneously, and parts would take 3 weeks to arrive. I called Shawn Labert and they weren't able to schedule me until the following week. Shawn called me back immediately and remarked that since I had already taken the trouble to check the capacitor, replacement of the control card should be well within my ability. He even suggested ordering one from Amazon which I had assumed was only available from an HVAC supplier. Finally, he even offered to be available to answer any technical questions I had. His encouragement was all I needed! I found a replacement card on Amazon sold by Rheem for $151. It arrived the following afternoon. That night I installed it within 30 minutes, and my blower roared to life! I literally saved $3,000 and 3 weeks of living in a hot house. A few days ago, we experienced a power outage, and my air conditioner stopped blowing air. After reading several reviews, I decided to have this company come and check my unit. I was informed that the diagnostic fee would be $89, which would be credited toward any necessary repairs or services. Devin came out to assess the situation. He discovered that a fuse was burned and replaced it. He also checked the AC capacitor and noted that it should be within 5% of 12.5 volts, but it was slightly lower, so he recommended replacing it. He quoted me $169 for the service and the capacitor. While checking the unit, he mentioned that another capacitor on the roof also needed to be replaced, quoting $285 for that part. Additionally, he clarified that the $169 service fee did not include the cost of the indoor capacitor, which would be an extra $165. I found this pricing quite unusual and expressed my concern, to which he replied that these parts are generally expensive. The total came to $589, but Devin said he provided a discount, bringing it down to $500. I asked him to leave the old capacitors for me to inspect. After doing some research online, I found that one capacitor was priced under $20 and the other slightly above that amount. I have included pictures for your reference. Essentially, the initial issue was a burnt fuse, and the two capacitors were replaced because they were old and potentially damaging to the unit in the future. However, the pricing for these parts feels dishonest. I had read many positive reviews about this company, particularly praising Shawn's honesty, so I am left feeling disappointed. It's disheartening to think that in our community, some may take advantage of others simply because they can. I believe we should treat each other with respect and integrity, especially when it comes to services we provide and receive. Unfortunately, my experience here has led me to feel that my trust was misplaced. I would not recommend this company; integrity is not something you can sell. Devan showed up w/smile & was as professional & fair as I could've hoped for. Here was his analysis of our AC's failure as listed on the invoice: Service Call Check system found outside compressor not coming on check electrical found capacitor has failed supplied and installed new dual run capacitor found condenser coil dirty washed out condenser coil with water and removed all dirt and debris started system and tested. Found indoor temperature not blowing cooler than 70° checked and found System low on refrigerant topped off system with new 410 a refrigerant got supply air to 54° system is on cooling at this time. Unit is 14 years old but in good working order job is complete. May I add that he allowed me to watch him work, while showing me all of his gauges that were alerting him to our problem(s). My Nest Thermostat stopped working correctly after just over a year (known issue can't be fixed - don't buy one). Shawn was awesome! He returned my call immediately and offered to send someone on Monday (it's Friday).
