Words of warning... DO NOT GO HERE AT ANY COST. I purchased a Living Social deal for the Shear Shack, and if I hadn't it would have saved me at least a year of heartache and attempting to grow out the worst cut I have ever had. I have a very discerning eye when it comes to haircuts. I notice the little details that some people may overlook. At this time, I was wearing my hair in an inverted bob, and I really just asked the lady to give me the same thing but shorter. However, what she gave me was really uneven with pieces that were longer on one side. I went back and asked her to fix it, but she just ended up making the OTHER side shorter. At that point the owner stepped in and offered the fix it. I asked her to also fix the back, because the layers were too long. I wish I had just never gone back! The owner cut the back of my hair with clippers like a man or an old lady. You would not believe how many tears I shed over this ridiculous haircut. I ended up getting my hair trimmed every couple of weeks after that to try to slowly make it a more feminine shape. Please just take my advice and do not go to the Shear Shack. read more

I went to Shear Shack for the first time 2 months ago for a haircut. The staff were very nice, and the stylist gave me a good haircut. I purchased some hair products because I was told there was a discount if I purchased them at the time of my first haircut there. When I got home, I found a voicemail on my phone telling me they had undercharged me for the products and I owed a few more dollars. I thought that was very strange, and for good customer service, they really should not expect me to come back and pay for their mistake. But I wanted to maintain a good relationship with the shop as I expected to go back for future services, so I returned the next day and give them the extra in cash. SEVEN WEEKS after my haircut, I got another voicemail from them saying "oh, we are really sorry but you were undercharged $9.00 for the haircut you got 7 weeks ago. Please call us back to arrange to pay the extra." Seriously? I immediately sent an email asking for an itemized bill so I could see where this extra $9 came in, and pointed out that I had already given them more money after the fact and felt I had paid what was owed, and then some. Not surprisingly, I got no response. Suffice it to say, I will never return to this salon. read more

Groupon brought me to Shear Shack. As a faithful Yelper, I read the reviews prior to booking my threading appointment. Upon reading the reviews, I booked with Surekha. Surekha was a nice lady and she did a rather clean job on my brows. Minimal pain, no holes... she just cleaned them up. A point that turned me off, eliminating a star from this review was the snide tone that the lady in the front took when she realized that I had a Groupon. I wish I could write a good review--I WANTED so much to like this place. But I will not be going back. Long story short, I went in this am to treat myself for my 40th bday. I had an appt. for a facial, eyebrow threading, manicure, and pedicure. Ding 1: I had to wait 20 minutes for Erica, the woman assigned to be with me for the morning. Ding 2: She completely screwed up my eyebrows. Completely. I asked to keep them thick--one was kept thick, the other super thin. I looked ridiculous. Ding 3 and 4: Really lousy pedi/mani. Lousy. Carelessly, sloppily done. The facial was terrific, but didn't make up for everything else that went wrong. I did have the woman at the front desk fix my brow, so now at least they match--but they're not what I wanted. I was looking for something special for my bday, and came home really disappointed. The lady who took me did a OK job, but it burned and hurt quite a bit. Also she did not clean up my eyebrows or put any cooling lotion on it, I thought this was very unprofessional. I wandered in one day since this place seemed like the only decent option close to where I live in the chaotic mess called Northern Virginia. I was new to the city---sad, nostalgic, wanting to slap myself for moving here, and terribly disappointed with EVERYTHING around me!!! After I walked out of this salon, more disappointment followed coupled with another urge to slap myself a little harder. The services here are pricey but range from mediocre to bad so if you're looking for an A++ salon experience, this place is a total waste of time and money. It only looks inviting from the outside. The women who work there are like amateurs. They just pick up a pair of scissors and start chopping hair without applying any sort of skill or technique to it. I have been to shear shack twice - once for a facial (5 stars!!!) and once for a haircut and eyebrow threading (2 stars). The haircut itself turned out to be quite lovely, and the threading did away with my stray eye strands -- but the whole time, I had the feeling that I'd walked into CoCo Chanel with a target bag. "Hmmm... what shampoo do you use?" I have a dry scalp, and at the time I was using the glorious product head and shoulders. She responded with raised eyebrows. "That's the same stuff you clean your floor with." Ah, yes, but my floors are clean and have no dandruff. Also, head and shoulders = $5, your shit in a blue bottle = $30. End of story. I also had dyed my own hair, and asked for highlights on top of it, which she actually refused to do, unless I paid to have my whole head redyed. She then continued to tell me stories about people who ruined their hair with at home dye. Now, flip side: The facial, given to me by a lady who's name I can't remember, but is a small older lady with an accent, WAS INCREDIBLE. She was so nice and skilled that it felt like a full body relaxation massage, rather than just a facial. I've been there a few times for eyebrow threading with average results. I never liked the fact that no one washed their hands before doing my eyebrows but thought I'll just wash my face as soon as I get home. I had the misfortune of getting Ang (I'm sure that's misspelled -- she's 30is with long curly hair and makeup covered acne) one day who had the bright idea to finish the threading with some sort of "eye massage." She was pressing her fingers into my eyes like it was a back muscle. It was really painful. I did not say anything at the time trying to be nice and out of shock, like, "what the..?" I washed my face thourougly upon returning home but my eyes began to itch and swell over the next couple of days. Long story short, I ended up with an eye infection and should have sued the place but settled for a free threading after complaining to the manager since my insurance covered the cost of treatment. The free threading done by the manager was lame and no one could tell my eyebrows had been shaped at all afterwards. I could have complained again but decided to never go back out of exhaustion of dealing with inept people. I'm still looking for a good threader, so far Lucy at Classic Look in Springfield has been the best but she is often not ready for her scheduled appointments, a little bit more expensive and her results are mostly good but sometimes average. The search continues but Shear Shack is most certainly crossed off the list!! read more

I have been to Shear Shack several times to get my eye brows threaded and really right now is the only place I trust to touch my brows. There are many pluses.....it's not to far down the road from my house, the ladies are always very nice, walk ins are welcome - I've never had to wait very long even when other people are also there waiting, they have a punch card system so you can eventually get a free something, parking is free, the price is right - comparable to just about every other threading place in the area and the shop is clean. I will say though to let who ever is threading your brows how you want them.....thin, thick, cleaned up, etc. Otherwise they will do what they want. ALSO if you have never had your eyebrows threaded I highly suggest it! It really does clean them up nicely and is pretty painless (and I have a very very VERY low tolerance for pain). And again this review is only for the eye brow threading. read more

I've been going to Shear Shack for threading and hair cuts for as long as I can remember. Earlier this year, I added massages along with facials and all the other good stuff they offer to the list. The women are always professional yet personable. The quality of service far exceeds any of the other salons in the area yet the prices are reasonable. What I love the most is that the girls take the time to listen to my concerns and will actually have a conversation regarding workarounds and/or possible alternatives. Imagine that! Shear Shack is the BEST! I love this place so much that I rent a car from DC to travel to VA for hair cuts. My friend from work has the best hair and recommended her stylist, Nettaya, to me. Ever since then, I will not go anywhere else! Nettaya is the best. She cuts layers really well and always remembers me and my likes/dislikes. Plus, the haircut and style is only $35 or $40. I can't believe I used to pay eighty dollars or more for haircuts at salons in DC!!! The salon is very clean and nice. They are full service: massage, manicure, pedicure, jewelry shop... ect. I haven't tried the other services yet, although their eyebrow threading seems to be very popular. They always have lines of people waiting on that service. read more

I went to Shear Shack a few month back and wasn't impressed. I has my chin threaded and a facial. The threading was fine, painful but that was to be expected. My facial wasn't good at all. She hurt me several times when she did extractions, and when I told her this all she said was "Im sorry," with an attitude. The facial wasn't anything more than a wash, mask, and moisturizer. Positives- it was clean and I received prompt service. But I won't going back. read more

I love coming here to see Sumera. She takes care of me like no one else has. I schedule a full two hours to have her dye and cut my hair, pamper me with a manicure and pedicure, and thread my eye brows. I leave looking and feeling amazing. Last week she prepared for my visit by brainstorming on some new hair colors. She hit it right out the park - I've received so many compliments on my new winter cut and color. I'm blown away by the negative reviews as I've had nothing but pleasant experiences here. The staff is wonderful, social, and will do what they can to make your visit pleasurable. I eat at Indaroma all the time and one of the staff there recommended this place. They were super nice, not busy on a Friday afternoon, so they took me in quickly, got my pedicure done in about 20 min and had plenty of time to spare to dry my nails in the ultraviolet light thing before meeting my boyfriend next door for dinner. My toes turned out nice and it felt good (Anu did a nice job), it was quick, pretty clean with sterilized tools (though I took off two stars for using really gross looking hot towels on my legs- one had a pink stain and the other one had a brown stain and the emery boards/nail buffers looked pretty used, most places will wash those out between uses). In the end, they did a very good, efficient job. The pedicure was $30 and reasonable given the speed and efficiency. And my toes look great. I'm happy with the end result. read more

I have been getting my hair cut here for the last year and often get the scalp treatment which is not only super relaxing but does a great job at bringing your scalp back to life. I first tried Shear Shack in January 2009 for eyebrow threading. I've been back several times since. They do a great job and the price is right ($12). Much better than waxing. On a visit late last year Sukekha started doing a heavy sales pitch for additional services. Was a little put off because it felt pushy . I told her I'd think about it. Fast forward to earlier this year. Bought a Living Social coupon for $100 of services for $45. Figured would be good opportunity to try a facial or massage. Unfortunately, I forgot about the coupon until the expiration date (7/29). Called them to try to get an appointment and was told they were booked solid. Was told if they had any cancellations, someone would call me back. Never heard from them so had to eat the loss. This Tuesday, I get a call from the owner telling me they received calls from several people in the same position and offered to let me use the coupon as a $45 credit toward services. I booked an appointment and went in yesterday. The spa area is very clean, calm and relaxing. Sukekha gives a good facial (my first ever) and great upper body massage. I left relaxed and de-stressed. My only complaints are: - Sukekha is a little too chatty for me. - front desk person very blah. Would have been nice to be greeted when I came in. read more

And I have short hair, which can sometimes be an issue. I went here as part of the Living Social deal -- $45 for $100 worth of services. I booked a deep tissue massage ($85) and a manicure ($15). Now, don't get me wrong, I expect when I go to a salon that the technician may try to up-sell me -- from a manicure, to a spa manicure or manicure/pedicure. And, hey, sometimes I am feeling crazy and may just let you wax my eyebrows after painting my nails, even if I don't see how the two treatments are even related! But. While receiving a massage from Anu, I pretty much was pitched every item on the salon menu -- from a facial for my "aging skin" to a deep conditioning treatment for my "dry hair." Did I mention it was while I was getting the massage? She talked to me about threading (I was actually curious about this as I had never had it done), told me she could give me a bikini wax while I was there, asked me if I wanted my armpits waxed (it was only a one-day stubble, I swear!) , offered to do my highlights and cut right afterward. I told her I didn't have time (true) so she pressed for me to do a mini-facial. All this while getting a massage. She gave me a threading demo on the back of my hand, and I finally succumbed to an eyebrow threading. It was so painful, I will never be having that done again! The manicure was sloppy, and, yes, she tried to up-sell me to the pedicure. At this point I have been there almost 2 hours and I want to leave. And, of course, she walked me out trying to book me for the myriad treatments she had offered me while reminding me that I should come back next week to get my eyebrows redone. I went to Shear Shack because I needed my roots done for my highlights. I told them just to do my roots, because the color takes a massive toll on my hair and I have long hair. Literally, two inches of my roots is all they needed to do!! I was very specific. When I got there, the girl seemed to be confused as to how I had blonde hair to begin with. She said she would bleach it and then see how I like the color. She put me in the chair, and I couldn't see what she was doing because of the foils. She ended up doing highlights all over my hair even though I had told her specifically not to. When she rinses it she tried to upsell me the deep conditioner, which I didn't want. Usually, the hairdressers know how hard the process is on my hair so they put extra conditioner in it anyway, without even bothering to try to make a sell on it. When I said I didn't want the hair conditioner treatment, she didn't even bother to condition my hair, which again is a massive mistake. She put me in the chair and my hair started falling out! She fried my hair off and then had the nerve to say "Does your hair always fall out when you get this done?" I wanted to scream at her!!! She did exactly what I told her not to do and acted like it was normal. As a hairdresser, she should have LISTENED to what I had to say! I wasn't too fond of the color, but I know that hair looks different after you wash it, so I decided to give it a few days and a wash to see what it did. She told me I could come back and she would tone it if I didn't like the color. To make matters worse, she made my hair fall out and literally put no highlights on my roots. I had hair falling out because she did the entire strand and had like maybe 8 or 9 strands of my roots highlighted. It was a complete waste of money. I would have told her to put in more like I had specifically told her to, but then she probably would have just fried off the rest of my hair! After washing it, it turned a nasty yellow color! I went back to the salon and told them I wanted it toned so it wasn't that color. I was very specific and told her I didn't want it to turn copper or ash because ash in my hair looks green. My mom and I picked out exactly the swatch I wanted and she went to put the toner in my hair. As she was doing that, another woman who worked there went and started her asking questions like "didn't she want it light? why would she complain about the color when you did what she wanted?" and made all these rude comments about me as the girl is putting toner in my hair and I'm sitting right there. The girl then said she would keep an eye on it to make sure that it didn't get too dark. I sat in the chair and she went and played with her phone, then began helping another customer before she remembered to come see how I was doing. She asked if I liked the color and I told her I couldn't see my own head so I had my mom come and check it out. After rinsing it out, it ended up being a mousey brown color with the roots she hadn't done turned copper. To make it worse, she didn't do it even so I have the front of my head, with no lights and no toner that is brown and then the top of my head with no highlights a copper red, and my highlights a orangey color. When they were drying off my hair so I could see it, I started crying in the chair while the rude lady kept repeating "look how nice the color is"... I started to freak out so they took me to the window to see how bright it was in the window. Well yeah, hair looks brighter in the sun, but thats still NOT what I had wanted. Now I'm stuck with this hideous hair color. It took me over 2 years to get my hair to color I wanted, and this salon not even three hours to mess it up completely. I am so angry and cannot believe how unprofessional and incompetent these people are! DO NOT COME TO THIS SALON! They are rude and don't know what they are doing. Book several weeks in advance if you're interested. I didn't, and had a disappointing experience. I purchased a certificate for Shear Shack on Living Social, and was excited about the prospect of affordable pampering. So I called at the beginning of the workweek to make an appointment for the following weekend or a weeknight, and was told that I could probably get in Saturday afternoon, and that someone would call back shortly to confirm. Instead I got a call back 4 hours later saying that they were booked solid for the next two weeks -- conveniently, until my certificate expired. I explained that my certificate would expire, and asked if there was any way I could be squeezed in or if I could talk to the manager about honoring the certificate a week after its expiration date. I was then informed that I was talking to the manager, and that no, they wouldn't honor the certificate or do anything to help offset my full loss on the certificate. So I have no idea how the services are, but I'm pretty disappointed by the management and the apparent, very strange need to book so far in advance for basic services like a manicure. (And of course, by the fact that I just straight lost money.) I would think a luxury service business like a spa would take better care of their customers. read more

I was very satisfied with the eyebrow threading at this place. I decided to check it out after my friend suggested I try it. The woman who did my eyebrows inspected my eyebrows and then suggested I let some of the hair at the end of my arch grow. I really appreciated that she discussed my eyebrows with me briefly. The staff is very nice and personable. 5 minutes resulted in clean, well-arched eyebrows. It only cost $10. My friend said to get one of the older ladies to thread. Surekha is the person I ask for every time and she does a wonderful job. The setup of the salon is always clean and service staff is very friendly. My only complaint is that the wait is a little long...so just make sure to always call beforehand and express that your time is urgent (even if it isn't that particular day). read more

I went to Shear Shack on Saturday for eyebrow threading after buying a Groupon. The woman who did my threading (I didn't ask for her name, unfortunately) caused a small cut in my skin just below my brow. She didn't mention it, so I found out when I looked in the mirror after she finished. When I expressed my surprise that I was bleeding, she started trying to rub alcohol on it. Since I know that applying alcohol to an open wound can kill skin tissue and shouldn't be done, I said I would take care of it myself when I got home. Not only did she not apologize or express any concern about the cut, she blamed me for it, saying, "You didn't hold your skin taut enough." I've had my eyebrows threaded several times, mostly by Iranian women, and have always loved the results and have never had any problem. Also, I have never been asked to do anything except relax while the threading was happening, and no one else has ever cut my skin with the thread. Please note that my friend also had threading done by another woman at the same time, and she did an excellent job. I was also concerned that they did not wash their hands before performing the threading. This might not be a major problem if no open wounds are involved. read more

I have had two haircuts here, and I will never go back. The first one did not look good, but with barrettes it was manageable. I wish I hadn't gone back for another haircut, but I did. This time I brought a picture because I thought perhaps I had previously not properly explained what I wanted. Well this haircut is the worst I've received, ever. Two days later I went to another salon, Miracles, to repair the worst of the damage. It's an improvement, but even the Miracles salon could make it look good without going super short, which I refused to do. I've been trying to grow my hair long for months, and now I'm back to square one. Although I've had my eyebrows threaded at Shearshack, and the stylists have always done a good job on eyebrows, I'm so upset about my hair, I won't go back. One of the things I like most next to the services I receive is that Harjeet and the staff are so friendly and treat you like family! Very personable. The salon is very clean. I'll preface this by saying i was the last appointment of the day so i'm sure everyone was tired and wanted to go home. The place is very pretty and they use good products. But that's about it for what I liked. As a quick synopsis - i was treated like a walking dollar sign to be taken advantage of and the treatments were not performed with much professional expertise. I was heavily pressured by staff who tried to up-sell me additional services every step of the way. I'm fine with asking "anything else for you today" once or twice... but not constant badgering throughout the treatments that am already paying for. Worse than the up-sells was the pressure to come back to the salon, and to "bring my friends". I was told "you come back yeah?" and "you tell your friends" and "we're good for haircuts, you come to us" so many times i can't count. It was extremely uncomfortable. I had a facial and a pedicure. Neither service was good. The facial was filled with criticisms about my skin/life routine - which is actually quite good. I was hammered with elementary advice over and over... some of which was just ridiculous. i.e. Drink lots of water. (duh.) Don't put lotion on before you go to bed. (umm... really?) If you exfoliate your freckles will fade. (HA! you go ahead and tell my irish-scottish-WASPy DNA that.) The extractions were not done properly - the lady just scraped a tool around my face instead of individually extracting pores. (That's big for me - extractions are pretty much the entire reason I get facials.) The pedicure was a huge disappointment. I haven't gotten one in years, so this was a big splurge. There was no attention to my foot - she barely even pushed the cuticles back and trimmed them. There was no shaving of excess dry skin to leave my foot all smooth and pretty - just some lotion and exfoliant. I saw the necessary tools sitting right at her station... she just didn't use them. The polish was put on sloppy and when she tried to get it off she got nail polish remover on the crease of the nails so now the polish is going to wear off faster. If you're at all concerned about the quality of your visit i wouldn't go to shear shack. A while ago I went here to get my eyebrows threaded because it was only place I could find nearby that was open at 10am. I didn't notice until I got home that they were COMPLETELY UNEVEN; one was threaded properly, the other she had taken way too much off. I looked surprised, but only on one half of my face. When I was paying up afterwards the person at the front desk tried to push me to buy some scarves they had for sale. Really, lady? It was like 80 degrees that day! Who's buying scarves right before summer hits? Anyway, their other services may be ok, but I'll never go again. After a year I made an appointment with harjeet, the owner, for a "layer" haircut and color. My hair is, well WAS very long and thick, until she butchered it. I told her before she started cutting it that I have an attachment to my hair and in mid sentence, without her even consulting me, she started thinning my hair. Why would she have to do that to layer it? Why would she cut it before coloring it? To save money on color? My hair is half the thickness it was before she got a hold of it. I feel emotional distress and cry everyday. I do not recommend her or the salon. If u love your hair, don't get it cut there. read more
