Anu is a SHEAR genius! I heard about this place a lot, and pass by it everyday. It was time for some maintenance, and waxing only leaves me burnt and broken out. So, as painful as I THOUGHT it was, I took the plunge! I walked in and she was at the front desk, she was very kind and welcoming. I told her about previous issues I've had with threading where people were too harsh that it left me scabbed which had made me boycott the service completely. She assured me that wouldn't happen and something told me to trust her, so I went with my gut. She was ever so gentle that in my mind I thought, "that's it?!" only because I was thinking to ask for ice to numb the area to be treated. What a drama queen I am!!! Held my expectations in check since I came here on a Groupon and never get out to Alexandria/Manassas (read: I spend my hard earned bucks on DC attitude). Best scalp massage I ever had, and I've had them everywhere. Easy to get in on short notice near New Year's. Super nice stylist, NO ridiculous upselling, quiet and chill salon, large and light. Talented with the shears and very, very good at communication, dialogue and feedback, essential for a good stylist. Updating my review now that I've visited for a massage. My original review is at the end. Here's why I downgraded my rating: My massage therapist was very friendly and super nice, so much so that I feel kind of bad to say this, but the truth is the massage was pretty bad. It was supposed to be deep tissue but was more like vigorous swedish. I asked for more pressure and she did but the rubbing was still very fast and not like previous deep tissue massages I've had where the therapist evaluates the tightness of my muscles and applies pressure accordingly. I am used to massage therapists that identify problem areas and work to get the knots out, and that didn't happen. I asked ahead of time for her to focus on my arms and shoulders but she spent most of her attention on my legs. On the plus side, the facial massage was nice as were the warm towels at the end. I really wanted to like this massage. The therapist was personable, I was able to get a same-day appointment, the facility is clean, the price wasn't too bad and the location was convenient. But it's really all about the massage, so I don't think I'll be back, at least not for a massage. Too bad. I'm continuing my quest to find an excellent deep tissue massage in Alexandria. Original review: Good colorist, friendly enough staff, great availability of walk-in appointments. I went for a color and cut and was pleased with the result. Also enjoyed the scalp massage and would like to go back again for a full-body massage and/or facial. Other reviewers say they felt like they were pressured to try other services but I didn't feel that was. I was offered a scalp massage (a minute or two was included in the shampoo) and I accepted a few more minutes at a buck a minute. I didn't feel like I had to say yes. Also I wasn't pressured to make a massage appointment even after I asked about what massage services they offer. I just said that I'd probably do that some time in the future and there was no mention of booking it now or anything. I was happy with my experience here and plan to go back. I see Carla for color, cut and highlights and she is awesome! When you are in her chair she makes you feel like everything is about you and makes sure you are happy! This place is completely unprofessional and undeserving of your patronage. I've been to Shear Shack MANY times over the past 5 years and I've finally had it with their non existent customer service. It is not unusual for me to be left waiting 20+ minutes for my esthetician, even WITH scheduling an appointment well in advance. Of course, no apologies are given and no one has tried to fix this overbooking issue. On several occasions, other patrons have interrupted my appointment with an esthetician and they continue a conversation while I'm waiting.... The owner is also very rude and unresponsiveness to many of the patrons that enter the salon. I will not be returning. read more

I get threading done regularly at Dupont Threading by Nitasha and have always had a positive experience. But I saw a groupon for this place and thought I'd try it. I could not get out of the chair fast enough. The person doing the threading went so slowly that the pain was excruciating. My eyes were tearing and I kept sinking further and further in my chair trying to escape the torture. I had to ask her to wait several times so I could regroup and steel myself for more. The lighting was also fairly poor so it was hard to examine the work that was done and see if there were any missing strays. When I got home I noticed a number of strays that I had to clean up with a tweezer. Worst of all, the next few days the skin over my eyebrows was red and had little bumps - the beginning of breaking out. This has never happened to me at Dupont Threading - in fact I could walk out of there and go right out and no one would even know I had just gotten my eyebrows and lips threaded. When she was finished I literally ran out the door and promised myself that I would never go anywhere but Dupont Threading again. read more

I have been taking my children to Shear Shack for haircuts for a while now and the more I go the less I feel like I am an appreciated customer. If you take your child to get a haircut at Shear Shack, be careful because they charge separate for everything from the shampoo to the haircut to the blow-drying and you are not getting anything special. It can cost you up to $45 by the time you walk out for a simple child's haircut. I forget sometimes and think I can walk in and tell the stylist what to do to my child's hair and sit and wait but not at Shear Shack. You have to sit right there or keep close by with your child to make sure they don't try to sell them with other services. I guess they think the child is paying the bill because I have been caught in that twice now and have had to pay a ridiculous amount. I think it is sneaky and wrong and when you complain or say something they just keep ringing up your bill and don't acknowledge your concern and hand the bill to you. You would think being a repeated customer with three children that would count for something so that is why I need to find another salon. Also in the beginning when I would take my children in the owner would always try to sell me any service she could which made it real uncomfortable just sitting there waiting but maybe because of all these comments written about them trying to sell you whatever they can I have not been asked in a while. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way my brows look after a tried-and-true Shear Shack threading. Some of these ladies are truly artists. Anu is my trusted go-to person. I'm very particular about the shape of my brows because they are my most prominent feature. If my brows aren't perfect, I look terrible. Really. Stay away from this place. I have been going there for five years to get my eyebrows threaded. They used to do a pretty good job, but I noticed more uneven brows in recent months so I stopped going. I went today because I was in the area, and after the woman was finished, I saw a HUGE GAPING HOLE IN MY EYEBROW. She tried to brush it off and pretend she didn't notice. Seriously lady??? I went to pay and she clearly saw that I was upset and offered to fix it, but I was not about to let her touch my eyebrows again. To make matters worse, the front desk attendant (and a woman that I'm pretty sure was the manager) just stared at me. No apology, no offer to not charge me for this horrendous threading job, no class at this salon... I paid my $12 dollars but left no tip and will never go back again. I had a groupon for an eyebrow threading and I hafta say that I was disappointed. The brows were uneven and the technician seemed really distracted. I thought that the pedicure was good though. Nice location and environment but I don't feel comfortable getting my eyebrows done here again. read more

2.5 stars. Got the voucher for upper lip and eyebrow threading. The lady (forgot her name--an older indian lady) took a LONG time to thread. upper lip was very thorough, but she said my eyebrows were uneven when i came in so she was going to leave some spots alone so the hair could grow out... her comment was fine but my eyebrows did not look shaped at all when i walked away. i've had other threaders notice that my eyebrows are uneven but somehow i still normally walk away with evened out and nicely shaped brows. i did comment afterward that i wanted a more clean shape (nothing crazy, trust me), but it seemed like the threader was pussyfooting and took off only a few hairs at a time, so i got impatient and told her to stop (nicely! :)). and no, i wasn't asking for sperm-y thin eyebrows, just normal cleaning up and following my natural shape. i've gotten plenty of threading at malls and have never been misunderstood, so i don't know what the problem was. lastly, they ran out of witch hazel (no extra bottles in the supply room? silly), so i walked out with redness on my face. in contrast, i walk away from those mall threading kiosks with little to no redness most of the times bc they never run out of witch hazel. very friendly people, clean facility, but i'm still sticking to my mall threading for now for value AND results :) read more

Read a positive review on "Next Door" & decided to be brave and give it a try. Threading was flawless, no telltale marks. Prithi(?) also did facial. I've had many before. Was disappointed the steaming was so brief & not enough for good extraction. Massage was pleasant.The corker was pricing when finished. Be sure to read posted pricing on their web page before as I was charged more than posted. (Don't like bargaining in the US) It was corrected when I mentioned the discrepancy. read more

I've been a customer for 20+ years and I love this salon!! Not only are they amazing, but the service, professionalism & prices I can guarantee you will not find any where else. The main reason why I've been coming here to get my haircut for all these years is because Harjeet, the owner who has cut my hair for 20 years, does exactly what I want not what SHE thinks I need. I always hear horror stories about other salons where they cut your hair so short because THEY think it's what your hair needed, not here and even though all these years I've been coming back she always asks me every time what I would like done to my hair at that appointment. All the ladies are amazing and so nice. I wouldn't know what I would if they decided to close shop. If you read any negative reviews about this location, it's a completely false review and I'm confident enough to say this because of my years of experience with this salon. read more

I went to have my eyebrows and upper lip threaded and it hurt a lot more than usual. I found out why when I was home in better lighting and saw that I was cut twice. this mall has become my fav place to visit during lunch time. while I am visiting cafe and grocery store next door, I thought of getting eyebrow threading done here. Great service, the ladies were great and friendly. I went in for a haircut because of Living Social coupon. Could not get anyone to tell me ahead of time who would be cutting my hair. Very frustrated with the scheduling process, then Axit didn't cut it short enough or pay attention to what I wanted. Tried to tell her it needed to be textured on top to get volume, and cut half inch chunks instead of feathering it. At that point, I opted to just get out and not try to make any further adjustments. I went in on a weekday morning, so it wasn't super busy, but I had to wait about 10 minutes for my lady. Got a haircut, mani-pedi and eyebrow threading here; the price list is fairly reasonable. The spa itself is down-right gorgeous and relaxing, so they get an A for ambience. I had Surekha for my haircut and eyebrows, and she was pretty good. She talked me through what she was going to do while she cut my hair, and the threading didn't hurt much. She made good small talk and was very sweet. The end results weren't exactly what I said I had wanted, but she did a good job, no less. I had Shelley for my mani-pedi, who was awesome--quick, but thorough. My nails look great and she massages well. I wish she spent more time on my calluses but there was some improvement. The staff here were very nice, so I'm kinda baffled by all these complaints about rude, pushy service. However, if you're a little of a hygiene freak like I am, bring your own mani-pedi tools, because these guys don't super-sterilize and repackage their tools between uses like some other places. Also, bring your own fragrant bath salts, because they don't use any in your foot bath. Parking is convenient and they're located next door to a nice Indian grocery store and cafe for lunch in between services on an all-out spa day. However, I spent only 3 hours at the spa for my wash/haircut/blowdry, manicure, pedicure and eyebrow threading. I'll probably come here again; it's close to home. read more
