Strangest and worst experience at a dentist of my life. Team informed me at end of my cleaning appointment that I would have to come back for part 2. At the end of appointment, they also told me I had to pay $80 despite being told I am in network for full coverage when arriving. Before I came back for part 2 of cleaning, I received a phone call that I was no longer in network and that they could cancel my appointment for me. Ok???? So I am being screwed because of an insurance issue? I had x-rays done during my visit as well. Dentist and team forgot to mention that I have a wisdom tooth coming in and that it needs to be removed ASAP. I very much enjoy my visits to Sheffield Square. Everyone is so friendly and easy to talk to. Ashley is always so helpful with my insurance, billing, and booking questions. Allison goes above and beyond to thoroughly explain my dental hygiene, provide care suggestions, and answer all of my questions. Dr. Tokowitz is great on the follow-up with additional recommendations and making sure I understand the plan for improving my dental health. They provide a ton of information, but I never feel like they're unnecessary or that they're being pushy. For example, they're recommending I get a mouth guard and explained why but understand that cost is a consideration for my choosing to wait. I greatly appreciate this. Other practices I've been to have come across as condescending or unsympathetic. This is never the case here. Aside from the actual office visit, the text reminders for appointments and further communications via email and text make getting in touch with them incredibly easy. I have been going to Dr T for a few years now. I initially started with them after having severe pain in my mouth and they were able to get me in quickly and start addressing the issue within a month. I ended up needing a root canal and they were gentle, patient and understanding. Ashley does a great job of keeping me updated on payments and helping me schedule appointments. Recently, I had to cancel my cleaning appointment and wasn't able to schedule another appointment for 8 weeks. Dr. Tokowitz immediately scheduled me a follow up appointment after a routine cleaning to fix botched fillings from a former dentist and get a broken retainer out. I had my first visit today and could not be more impressed. I am so grateful that I went to Sheffield Square Dental. I was being treated by another office, but couldn't get in earlier even though I had pain. Sheffield Square got me in the next day and corrected my treatment plan. Another office had scheduled care that I didn't need and seemed to miss other things. Dr. Tokowitz and his staff were awesome! This was my first visit, and they were very comprehensive in getting my dental background. Allison (I believe) was my dental hygienist, and she was fantastic and made the experience super comfortable. I've never had any dental issues, but I have been told previously that I might start experiencing pain in my jaw due to TMJ disorder. Well, I recently experienced some pain, so I asked Dr. Tokowitz about treatment options. He was extremely thorough in examining my teeth and the alignment of my jaw, and was really helpful in explaining my options for orthodontia and a night mouth guard. I ended up going with the night guard as a first step, and he did the custom mold right then, so I'll have the night guard in a week or two! I was dreading my appointment due to bad experiences with other dentist offices, but Dr. Tokowitz and his staff were absolutely great! The receptionist (Ashley?) was very friendly, the woman taking my X-rays was great, my hygienist was lovely to talk to--very open and transparent about what I needed to know--and Dr. Tokowitz himself is a very kind, capable dentist. I've been going to Dr. Tokowitz for the past 4 years and have been very happy. Dr. T is incredibly thorough, careful, and has a true passion for dentistry and keeping his patients' mouths and teeth healthy. He strikes a good balance of making sure all problems/concerning areas are addressed but also not recommending unnecessary procedures, etc. The billing process is straightforward - if any additional work beyond a standard cleaning is needed, the front desk checks with insurance and gives you a printout of the cost breakdown. I had to find a new dentist that was in my network, so when I began my research - somewhere near my home - I came upon Dr. T's office. It had some good reviews so I thought I would give it a go. Ashley at the front desk is great. She's nice, professional and is also knowledgeable about dental care and often steps in to get the appointment started. All the billing was done perfectly and I knew all my costs with no surprises. Dr. T is wonderful! He's very friendly and explains what he is doing which makes me feel very comfortable. I had to go in for some extra care this year and was accommodated on very short notice. After my visit, I received follow up emails checking on my pain level and offering options for a return visit. I did have to return and I was seen immediately and after 45 minutes the work was done and I am now happier and pain free!! This is not a new review, simply a follow up based on Dr. Ts comment to my original post. As Dr. T commented, my experience was indeed in 2005. But 5 years later, my teeth remain filling and cavity free, and my gums are as healthy as can be. I have been to other dentists in Chicago since my appointment at sheffield square, and NONE of them have found any of the problems that Dr. T said that I had and needed addressed. After every regular check-up, I am reminded how happy I am to have not paid for cavity-free teeth to be filled. I should also clarify that none of the other dentists Ive visited have relied so heavily on the Diagodent tool to make the decision to drill. After doing some searching, I found several articles on this method that were useful -- and also became aware that MANY online reviews from patients and dentists alike discuss how this tool can easily show "false positives" for decay and some dentists are known for using them to unnecessarily fill cavities for profit. Its clear that this tool can be very useful in early detection. But it also requires dentists to make sure the teeth are properly prepared and other factors are considered to ensure that the reading is accurate (if teeth arent properly cleaned prior, the numbers will be skewed) A quote about the procedure in the NY times: "I tell dental students that Diagnodent shouldn't be used as a license to drill, said Dr. Masatoshi Ando, an assistant professor at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. It's useful as a second opinion. But dentists still need to do a careful visual inspection and poke around with their explorers, he warned." Unprofessional. I can admit to lax dental care during my long period with no insurance so for that, there were no hassles or guilt trips from the staff. Two stars. It all went downhill from there. When the billing/receptionist person couldn't figure out my insurance, I was wary. When the hygienist commented on my mouth and my sex life, I was offended. When another employee commented on my skin color, and then asked me (in a condescending way) if I used sunscreen, I was annoyed. I thought I was here for dental work. Wary, offended, and annoyed. I already hate going to the dentist...there is no reason for these feelings to be brought into the mix. read more

I first saw Eli Tokowitz in May 2011, where it was discovered I needed some work done. In addition to a few fillings which all went smoothly, he sold me on 'onlays' instead of crowns because they were slightly cheaper. One on the left side of my mouth, one on the right, installed about 3 months apart. The first one caused sensitivity with the tooth to biting, which was slowly corrected with two adjustments to my bite, allowing me to chew on the right side again. After that was corrected we proceeded to work on the left side of my mouth with an onlay and a filling. After six adjustments over at least 6 months, it was never corrected. I even had them try to correct the bite again at my semi-annual cleaning/xray and still were unable to get my bite adjusted. I had pain on the left side since the installation, and continued to have pain until finally seeing a new dentist. Upon seeing another dentist, the hygienist was able to remove cement left over from a retainer on my lower teeth that the previous hygienist's were too concerned about removing or simply didn't bother with. It was also revealed that TWO of my teeth were cracked, directly above the 'onlay' Eli Tokowitz installed. I'd suspected something was wrong weeks prior to my dental exam because of sensitivity on that side to hot/cold. This required a crown and a 3 layer filling, both of which would most likely not be necessary had my bite been aligned properly. As if that weren't enough, it was discovered the onlay on the opposite side was installed on a tooth with decay that is clearly visible below the mounting line of the cap. This onlay, installed less than a year ago for $1000 by Eli Tokowitz to a tooth that didn't have the decay completely removed will have to be replaced. Overall, after $3000 work done at Sheffield Square Dental, I wouldn't be the least bit upset had they done a quality job and I hadn't been in recurring pain (and having a very high tolerance for pain) but the conclusion is they succeeded with fillings, but the onlays were probably not the correct solution. -- UPDATE I've had crowns installed by another dentist and have one onlay left to replace. After dealing with these problems the last year, I've determined Eli should have recommended a root canal on the tooth that continued to give me pain, as that is what ultimately solved the problem. In the end, he reached out to me, offering to xray and investigate the problems free of charge, and to even discuss a partial refund. I declined, but as a business owner myself, I couldn't help but respect his integrity and concern to keep his customer satisfied. read more

Let's just say, I didn't choke during the xrays (I often do). Cleaning was thorough and easy, as the hygienist was gentle and kind. My treatment plan is reasonable. We are planning the emergent procedures within a matter of days, and then my end goals were considered and added to the plan. I am looking forward to my visits with Dr. Tokowitz and his staff! I am just happy this office has a hygienist to clean my teeth. My former dentist was great, but I never felt like my teeth were quite polished the way they should feel after a six-month cleaning. read more

Oh if they hadn't changed their insurance acceptable policy years ago (traditional only now, no DMO like I had) I would never have stopped going there. Dr. T was super nice and never made me feel bad about my rotten teeth, he came up with a plan and slowly over time we got all my issues worked out, and there were many of them. Totally flexible with payment terms too, since I had to have so much work done I would pay half or so then leave a credit card imprint for my next payday for the rest. I've yet to find another dentist that does that. The funniest thing that happened during treatment was on my second to last appointment, he was finishing up and said oh next time we'll take care of that front tooth which had a very small cavity. I had totally been looking forward to getting it fixed because it was visible and I was getting married that weekend, it was now or never to be the picture perfect Polish princess. I said oh no I'm getting married on Saturday can't you fix it today? He congratulated me and seemed genuinely excited and proceeded to fix it in like five minutes. Including bonding the space between my front teeth with the tiniest sliver of bonding since it was right next to the cavity. No more Madonna gab tooth! Freaking fantastic work. I need to scan a wedding pic and do a close up on my smile only, seriously amazing work, like an artist. Like I said, if only they still took my insurance I would never have left and would still have fantastic teeth. read more

I cannot emphasize enough how poor my experience was here. To start, I was treated as if I was not in the room when the Dentist and Dental hygienist would speak about me. It was so uncomfortable and disrespectful. Then, when I asked questions, they made me feel dumb or silly for even asking. Finally, and worst of all, they claimed I had 4 cavities which needed filling. I got them filled. Next time I came, they told me I had two more. I got a second opinion and - no cavities to be filled. I am terrified of going to the Dentist. I had to have a crown put on and some cavities filled and Dr. Tokowitz did an amazing job! He is very gentle and a perfectionist! They also gave me a blanket, noise canceling headphones and an iPad to listen to music while my procedure was being done. I really like that they offer sedation as well. (I'm seriously a wimp). Just started coming to Sheffield Square Dental. I've lived in Chicago for about two years now and have been looking for a good dentist. I did a ton of research and I decided to give Sheffield Square a shot. I knew I was going to need some major work so I hoped they would be good. I went in for my consultation and the staff and doctor could not be any more wonderful. I'm always pretty nervous at the dentist but they made me feel totally comfortable. I was very impressed by the care the staff took. The doc gave me the info on what I needed to do and I went ahead set it up. I had some money and schedule issues but they were so great in working with me and I got everything handled. So far i have had two deep cleanings and I cannot say enough good things about Alison, the dental hygienist. Over the course of two visits she really did great work and honestly there was almost no discomfort. She was excellent and did such a good job of walking me through the process and my next steps. She was honestly a deep cleaning ninja. Now it's on me to keep up with my side of things to keep my gums in good shape. After a bad experience at a previous dentist and some mounting dental anxiety, I resigned myself to having bad teeth forever. Luckily I found Dr. Tokowitz and his team on Opencare. Everyone was so kind and patient with me as they worked on my teeth. I recently had a free consultation here for dental contouring. Dr. Tokowitz discussed the pros/cons of filing down a few of my teeth, and he said he could do it if that's what I wanted. But he offered another option as well. I have some crowding with my bottom teeth, and he advised that Invisalign could actually fix both issues. They did a scan of my mouth and sent it to Invisalign. In less than a minute, we received potential treatment plans and the results (pics of what my teeth would look like). In the long run, this is a much better option for the health of my teeth and gums. I truly appreciate the time and effort put into my consultation and how Dr. Tokowitz and his staff answered every question I had. Everyone was very friendly and patient.
