Very sad and disappointed to see what it used to be a fantastic customer service experience. This place has obviously gone through ownership or management change. It used to be the place that you chose over Home Depot solely on their great customer service. Our most recent poor experience was today Saturday with the person supposedly in charge named Lukas. He needs to go back to customer service training Course 101. He was uncooperative, purposefully difficult and uninformed of their business. I used to love this place. Went there to get some wood cut and delivered. They went through the cuts with me over and over, drew it out, measured, etc. Then they didn't show up on the day of delivery, and told me days later it was because they miss-counted $16 worth of cuts (on a $300+) order. They could have delivered on time and eaten their $16 error or asked me to pay $16 more, but instead they cost me the weekend. Then they admitted their error, and... delivered the wrong cuts, missed key pieces... and ignored emails asking to deliver the missing pieces or refund the order. I've got a half-finished, completely out of line project and I will not bother ordering from them again. Maybe they have better wood than Home Depot, but if Home Depot screws up, they fix it. Today I needed 2 items, and I didn't want to go into the store, even though everyone was wearing a mask, and all customers' temperatures were checked at the door. It may be my rustic upbringing, but my design aesthetic runs towards wood and leather. Bother me not with your shiny steel tubes, crystal trinkets, ebony whatever. But a quarter-sawn oak frame with coffee-dark leather cushions is like an altar. You don't need to "love materialist things" to be able to appreciate the stunning beauty of natural materials, lovingly crafted. Sadly, not everything my hands create match the picture in my head at the beginning. Or, maybe, what I should say is that this is the beginning, so not everything my hands create match the picture in my head. But I'm getting better. And I'll keep getting better. And when I need large, solid wood to turn into expensive dust (and nice finished products), there really is no competitor to Shell. Their selection of hardwoods is second to none. And a wide variety of wood already tongue and grooved means I get to spend less time mindlessly shoving things through my dado and more time crafting a nice finished product. I'll be back. Why five stars for a lumber store? Easy, I'm not a lumber guy. Wood to me comes in a flat packed box from Ikea. I put things together with that Ikea wrench that coms in every package. When I bought this backyard cabinet that was really easy to put together but didn't come with shelves I knew I was going to have to venture into the real wood world. I first went to Home Depot to find out they don't make the kind of cut I needed for the shelf. I'd driven by Shell Lumber for years and kinda new this was the place to go. The guy who helped me was amazing. No judgement from him just quality service. He listened to what I needed, how it would be used, selected a wood for me, pulled it down, marked it off, set up my order and the next day I had three wood shelves with a special angle cut (from the Mill Shop). No muss, no fuss just service and the exact product I needed. I love companies like this. To me, this type of service always gets five stars. read more

Really poor customer service. We were looking to buy some new doors and they basically treated us like we were pieces of crap and stupid. SO SORRY... didn't know you have to give the width measurement first (and they were sure to correct us). Kind of your typical hardware store that probably deals mainly with contractors and makes consumers feel idiots for shopping there. We went to their "special order" department with a third surly guy kept saying "no" and continued to make us feel unwelcome. They were marginally more friendly across the street at Home Depot and showed us a much larger selection. No wonder I never leave the beach and pay twice as much at the South Beach Ace hardware. Real humans work here! I love going to Shell Lumber whenever I get that DIY itch. I snap a few pictures at home of whatever project I want to work on, then I show them to any of the many Shell employees walking the sales floor and ask them what I need to do. I have never stumped them. They give me easy to follow directions and they don't judge me for not knowing in the first place. Nine times out of ten, they have what I need, and when they don't, they send me on my way with a few suggestions on where to get it. Did I die and enter a fresh wood cut heaven? No, just Shell Lumber. Now I'm used to the Home Depot off of 136 and 160, and the 2 Ace Hardwares, but Shell Lumber was a man's toy store. I went with a friend to pick up some cherry wood he had pre-cut there for his soon-to-be kegerator. But before that, we got to walk around and take in the great and varied selections of wood, sheets and more. Oh, they also have a hardware store. Its a bit claustrophobic, but that's alleviated by the free popcorn. I've never had harder wood than when I was at Shell Lumber. read more

The best hardware store in south Florida. If they don't have it they will get it. The people are great, the popcorn and coffee is free and they have all most anything you could need. Their wood shop is great for small custom projects. I needed an extra wide threshold and they whipped one up for me. Worst customer service of my life. Went in to store Saturday March 31st looking for hangers for paintings, I needed 18 pcs, so I special ordered with Sergio Bonilla, paid order and asked him when will they be ready, he said Tuesday AM, I asked do I need to call first, no way , he said, we need them for our stock and you can be sure it will be here. Surprise, surprise I went in Tuesday and nada back Wednesday, nada, back Thursday, nada... finally on Saturday I tried to cancel order, the lady on the front said I needed to speak to original salesperson, in SHELL LUMBER if you do not have a designated salesperson you are in" no mans land", she said he stepped out for a few minutes, by this time I was loosing it.... finally she paged him and I was able to cancel the order and let Sergio Bonilla know how disappointed I was with his service. read more

This is the place to come for all your wood and wood cutting needs. They also sell individual Mason jars in various sizes, how random and awesome is that? Their garden department is small but the staff is very knowledgeable and bring in good quality plants, trees and palms. All your basic home maintenance needs are covered here. Don't expect the selection you would find at mass, chain hardware stores. But do expect exceptional customer service, where they will walk you to what you are looking for, rather then say "I think it's in aisle 23" and they just keep on walking by. I have never been treated so rudely in my life as by the employees in this location. Wanted to purchase over $5000 in goods and when explained I needed a recommendation for an installer, they said no. $5000 hinged on this. After years of being a loyal customer and buying thousands of dollars of building supplies over the last couple of years I tried to return something for the first time. It was literally maybe two hundred dollars worth of left over materials - all in perfect shape. I was told it was past 30days and the manager wouldn't accept it. Today they lost a customer. This is my go-to hardware store. Much friendlier and more helpful staff than Home Depot, and the place is small enough that, if you know exactly what you want, you can easily get what you are looking for within a couple of minutes of entering the store. Pretty good supply of items available, considering the size of the store. And prices are usually very competitive, even compared to, say, Target or Walmart. Just to give you an example of what I mean by friendlier staff -- the other day I arrived almost exactly at their closing time, not realizing that they were about to close. The guy at the door smiled and told me not to worry, just to come on in and try to get what I needed quickly. A lot of other places would have told me to take a hike! And, of course, there's the FREE popcorn (I've never actually tasted it, but it sure smells good). read more

If Keith takes care of you, your good. If he's out and the manager has to handle it, you're in trouble. I have used this company several times as they seemed to be able to provide timely delivery of wood and I was using a very good sales rep named Keith. There delivery people are good. However A lot of wood that is supposed to be top quality isn't. It may have huge knot holes on one side and rounded edge on the other so cannot be used for a top piece. They do, however, offer to refund for wood that doesn't work. The biggest drawback is that no-one in the store seems to know what they are doing for phone orders when Keith is not there. If it was only Keith I was rating - it would be 5 stars. However, when he is gone the manager doesn't know how to charge you and set up delivery for wood - so three days now I have had no wood when I planned on it. Izzy does not seem to be a good manager or know what he is doing. Replacing him seems like it would be smart move from my point of view. read more

This store gets one star because half my order was delivered. The rest of the experience has been a nightmare. In brief: The lumber group took my order on a post it note stuck to a computer, which was promptly lost. Emails came from unknown email addresses, without prior knowledge, so those were not timely received. It took weeks just to get a quote. Then another week to complete the quote. Promised delivery dates were missed. No follow up calls to me were made even when they agreed to promptly call back - meaning the same day. This is chronic. And this is after anywhere from a few minutes to in one case 30 minutes on hold waiting to talk to someone. And they have no way to look up an order by name or phone number - at least the call center people cant seem to figure out how to do so. My delivery location is to an open business, with the phone number on Shell's order form, yet Shell called another unrelated number prior to delivery, then chose not to deliver. Because it delivers only one day a week to a region, we lost a week on delivery, which means our project (repairing our house from the hurricanes), is delayed further. Half the shipment is still not delivered, and promises to follow up were not completed. This store is a joke, and very frustrating. Lots of wasted time with their carelessness and poor service. Frankly Lowes and HD should put us and them out of our misery. read more

Wonderful lumber and hardware store! However, I was surprised to learn that I could not pay for the order my handyman placed over the phone by credit card. I was told that I could provide my credit card information via email. This is a very insecure way to provide private information versus over the phone. So I will go in person. No big deal but seems an easy change to make to protect customers. read more

Never got to see whether their products are good or not. First call, they hung up on me ... did not try to call me back. 2nd call: Told me they would have to receive a fax list of what I needed, although I told them I only needed 1 sheet of ply with 1 simple cut. Still insisted on a faxed list! Then said they would not take credit card over phone, and would not be able to deliver when needed. All in all, a poor experience. I was refinishing a domino table and was looking for a specific kind of polyurethane spray paint. Lowes carries it for 9.99 but was sold out, Shell lumber has it for 17.99. Ouch! What a disorganized operation. Here's a step by step analysis of how my experiences went. 1.)The material is at the warehouse, said the Young lady who processed my credit card. 2.) my driver gets to warehouse, waits two hours for the delivery they assured me was there. I get it-sometimes people make minor errors once in a while 3.) against my better judgement I order more material and the young lady assures me the material is in the store, not the warehouse 4.) get to the store, the material is at the warehouse. 5.) I say I'll go to warehouse and pick it up. 6.) warehouse is closed. We're sending it there now in rush hour traffic. S*** show of an operation. I didn't just order a box of nails, I ordered thousands of dollars worth of material. Not just great hardware and lumber... I was afraid that the Home Depot would be serious competition for Shell Lumber, which has long been one of my favorite Miami institutions, but fortunately Shell appears to be continuing to thrive. It has expertise in every department and a checkout staff that is super efficient while remaining pleasant, and it is consistently well stocked for nearly anything I need for home maintenance and repairs. The prices are basic and reasonable, I've never had a problem parking (although I also find it a convenient stop on the Metrorail going to and from work), the service is super. I've found their selection, quality and prices of air conditioner filters beats Home Depot. This is where the pros go to get their materials, and for good reason. read more
