My daughter goes to school in Helena. I went to visit and she took me to Shellie's. It was a Friday night and prime rib was on the menu. The piece of meat I had was cooked perfectly and was big. I am a hearty eater and was filled when I stood up. We went bsck on Sunday for milkshakes before I flew home. I tried one of the local flavors, Marionberry and was not disappointed. This place was recommended to me by my hotel while I was in town. The place is cute and definitely has that "diner" feel. After looking over the menu, I decided to go with the chicken fried steak. My waitress asked me if I wanted the dinner or breakfast portion. I asked the difference & decided to go with the breakfast version. She said that it came with eggs and toast, I did not want toast & asked for a small order of fries instead. So I get my food very quickly & my over easy eggs were cold and in addition to my fries there were hashbrowns on the plate. Had I known it came w hashbrowns, I would not have ordered the fries. You would think my server would have told me that? Not to mention her pants were ripped right in the crotch area. If she bent over, the whole place could see the goods. It seems unsanitary & inappropriate for a restaurant. The food was just ok, the service wasn't spectacular and they call you "sweetie" (I hate that). I likely will not go back. Had lunch with my mom and sister at the new location (former Highway 12) and we were so disappointed. Our waitress was a sweetheart but our food was awful and it took over 30 minutes to get. We all had burgers and fries. The burgers were good size but very dry and over cooked, grilled buns were cold and my mom's was burnt. The garnish was some seriously wilted lettuce, an onion slice and some thin whimpy pickles. The fries, which used to be fresh cut, are some kind of frozen battered things that tasted like they'd been fried in oil used to fry fish. Cost us $30.00 and it was definitely not worth it. I was in this restaurant for thanksgiving meal. Asked for white meat got mixture more dark then white. Meal is to come with roll. None served ? When it become obvious that I was pissed the roll magically appears and the pie was slapped down In front of me. If your to busy to deal with a long time customer just say so and I will find an alternative for my dining needs. read more

Love this place. We are from Canada and stumbled onto Shellie's looking for something other than fast food late night(open 24hrs). The food is classic Americana and tastes like grandma is in the back cooking. Service is fast and attentive and atmosphere is friendly. Haven't been in a couple of months, but still as good as ever. Waitress recognized me still and was very nice to daughter. Asked which of two she recommended and she said how about do one and basically a sampler of the other with no extra charge. We ordered our drinks, then the person spills hot wYer on my mom. No Manager even came over to apologize or anything. At the end of the meal they just gave her her bill. Asked for the manager to try to get some kind of compensation for the hot water. The server comes back to offer a dessert. Ask for the manager again. I actually went to Shellie's West on Euclid. The food was ok... I say ok because I am a Chicken Fried Steak enthusiast and I order it anytime I go to a new place. I did like the huge salad but would have preferred the salad bar. Nobody mentioned it and I had to ask afterwards. Service was good but I was the only customer. Place had a weird vibe as well, again maybe because I was the only customer. I guess I had higher expectations because I have heard good things about the original, I just haven't eaten at that one. I was pleasantly surprised not only by the choices on the menu but the prices were extremely reasonable for the large portions of food! The milk shakes and homemade pies were outstanding! I ate there at various hours and the service was wonderful each time with a friendly staff. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who really enjoys quality food. Wow I'm not sure what to say here I'm very upset I starting eating here regularly about 5 weeks ago. At least twice a week I always order the same item the same way as does the significant other. Other then the lunches their we don't eat out vary rarely and haven't science eating here. With in the first 12 hours of eating there my husband and I got sick at first we thought it was just a flu and it would pass it would get a little better tummy and bottom wise every few days and then would get worse after a week we began looking into what could be doing this to us we both saw a doctor and the first visit we just talked with the doc and said it's probably just a virus that should be clearing up any day a week later we returned no testing done. A week later we returned and that is when we where informed it was a gastrointestinal food born illness and was informed of proper food handling techniques which we both hold food handlers permits and know all about the rules and laws of food prep. I looked into our at home diet and mother added up the next day as ritual we where heading in to Shellie's for lunch when spouse said wait a min let not eat here today let's go make something at home I didn't understand but he explained he thinks our issue might be comming from there so instead he wants to try something else to see if we feel better so we went home and cooked it took about 5 days from our last visit to Shellie's and we both felt better so we thought maybe it's just eating out so we decided to go to steves cafe we both ordered the same type of item from steves and test the theory we both felt fine after wards so my husband thought in a few days let's try Shellie's again and see what happens. I don't want to get sick again but I wanted to be sure what was causing the issues so we went in at 12 pm ordered our usual and by midnight we where fighting over who gets to use the bathroom first. It took another 5 days for things to clear up and we have science enjoyed lunch else where just be careful. read more

I have been here about 10 times, and have only had the chicken fried steak in the small and holy cow versions... That's what I get at diners like this all across the country, and that's all I order besides biscuits and gravy... So far, Shellies' CFS Is the best I have had, to the point that I haven't tried the biscuits and gravy... I could care less if it's the same pre packaged CFS as everyone else (I have no idea about that)... Maybe it's the oil, maybe it's the time cooked, maybe it's the gravy... I don't care, I'm sold... Great service, great cooking... even when the place is jam packed, I don't see any frustration going on read more

I love Shellie's. Their food is always delicious and service is usually always good. Tonight (12/21/17)at about 7:30 a friend an I went for a late dinner. Our server was very sweet. After my friend got her food (they had to remake mine because they forgot pepper jack-but caught it before my food was brought to me) She cut into her waffle and it was quite tough and kind of cold, not burnt but rubbery almost? No big deal, stuff happens. So we send it back to be remade, mind you we're sitting at the counter right in front of the window to the kitchen so we could see the cooks. As soon as my friend sent her food back the cooks continued to glare and stare at us the entire meal, clearly irritated and more than likely talking smack. It was very clear that they were upset and they were not handling it professionally. It's okay to be irritated but you should never ever glare at your customers. I was so uncomfortable the entire meal. We pay for food to be cooked correctly. My food was excellent and my friends waffle was better after being remade. Just a tip for the cooks at Shellie's. Customers (especially people who've worked in restaurants like me) can tell when you're talking smack. And we can see you glaring at us. Your mess ups are not the customers fault. Be a professional adult, don't let it get to you, and absolutely do not glare at your customers. You only make yourself look like an adult child throwing a tantrum. Merry Christmas! read more

This was the third time I've been here. I'm in Helena for work, and often it's the only place that's open when I get done. The first time I was here the service was painfully slow, the food wasn't anything to write home about. The second time the service was a little bit faster, but when it came time to order pie, the cook decided that my banana chocolate cream pie just needed a little (like a tiny amount) of chocolate syrup on a banana cream pie. The waitress was nice enough to comp the pie as she realized there was a screw up somewhere. The third (and last time), I waited 10 minutes without getting a menu or an acknowledgement from any staff, there was two waiters and 3 other tables there. After 10 minutes another group came in and IMMEDIATELY got menus. It was very apparent that I wasn't going to get served, so I will gladly take my money somewhere where I can get any type of service. read more
