I absolutely LOVE this place, it's sort of expensive, but especially at night (I came at 1 am) these guys were AMAZING Fast, friendly, professional service. Fresh and hot food that fills you up, and tastes like home. These guys on the graveyard KNOW what they're doing. Every time I stop by Shellie's, I know I'm going to be treated right. Two times I've been here, and two times I've been absolutely blown away. I could not stop thinking about how good their food is when I was driving away. We ate here twice because it was close to our hotel and just about the only diner around. First time I had the Fish and Chips and it was marginal at at best. The coating was thick and greasy - I wound up just eating the cod inside rather than the coating. My wife got a burger and I thought it was overdone. Second time I ordered a Chef Salad and that was good - the lettuce was fresh and there was plenty to eat. I think if you're in the area, Shellie's might be an OK choice if you keep it simple. read more

Shellie's has moved to the former Perkins location so there's plenty of parking. We decided to go to brunch about 10:00 am on a Saturday morning - waited for a table for about 10 minutes which wasn't bad. It did take a few for our server to say hello and grab our drink order, then our food order. I think like everyplace else there's a staff shortage but that's ok. Our waiter was friendly and took good care of us. I really enjoyed my breakfast sandwich - scrambled eggs, American cheese, bacon on a biscuit with a side of hash browns. Perfect amount of food! Okay... if you like PIE... this review is for you. We travel the country in search of great pie. Shellie's came with high recommendations and so we drove in and picked out a delicious cherry pie. I had the crepes and everything was delicious. All the food was good but the PIE was outstanding. We ordered a cherry pie and then got a peach pie. We got here (Helena) late, after driving around to 4 other places that all closed early due to being understaffed. Even the fast joint was closed. Frustrated and hungry, Someone from a different restaurant suggested this place because it was still opened. Thank goodness, it was goooooood! The place was diner type experience. Crowded. Smelled a little greasy. But man oh man, don't let that fool you. Staff was upbeat. Nice. Friendly. Attentive. Food, the best onion rings. Loved the clubhouse. Too big to finish. I got the jojos with it. hubby got the Hawaiian burger. That was the biggest hamburger pattie I've ever seen. Not dry at all. Cooked thru. Very juicy. I moved to Helena in late 2020 and everyone who was a local that I had spoke to in pursuit of what to do, where to eat, etc., all had mentioned Shellie's with enthusiasm and love. After eating there, some of my partner's family asked me how I liked it and I didn't have the heart to tell them that it was one of the most disgusting things I've eaten since I have moved to town. Outside of The Staggering Ox, Hardware Copperline, and maybe one or two other joints, the culture shock of having lived in diverse areas and then moving to Helena, MT has been deeply, genuinely depressing as far as food is concerned. Melaque Mexican Restaurant and Shellie's both came highly rated from everyone, but being from two large towns that KNOWS both Mexican food and southern, hometown-style cuisine, it is plain as day to understand that these places are thriving off of local nostalgia alone. -- This review of Shellie's covers their original location as well as their new location since they moved from the original -- ORIGINAL LOCATION When I originally went to Shellie's the first time in late 2020, I got a Dr. Pepper in a dirty, flaked glass (not water spots, poorly washed) and had asked for a new one, showing the waitress -- who looked completely over me asking to have a drink that wasn't sitting in someone's germs -- who took *a while* to get me a new one, leaving the old one on the table. For food, I ordered a hamburger with their homemade french fries. The bun was dried out, the lettuce was flat, the tomato was good (but then again, I enjoy tomatoes), and the meat was dry, flavorless, and looked like it belonged to one of those Fisher-Price playhouse grill sets. The fries were hot, but by far the most bland thing on the plate (not even salted). It wasn't good, even after parts had been drowned in either ketchup, ranch, or hot sauce, but I ate the entire burger as the person who had taken me was quite enthused with sharing a part of their hometown with me. I didn't want to be a jerk and complain about everything seeing as how our meal had begun with me asking for the common courtesy of drinking out of a glass that had been cleaned. We ate here a few times after that, with myself always picking something different off the menu until getting something better than bare minimum edible.... that's when I found the liver and onions. NEW LOCATION I've eaten here a handful of times. On two occasions, I have ordered the liver and onions. Without a doubt, the liver and onions is the least worst thing to order off the menu from Shellie's. It's nothing great, but it's somewhat hard to eff up liver and onions, which makes it the best thing that they could do as minimal seasoning, very little prep, and minimal effort goes into the dish. Each time I've ordered this, I noticed there was no consistency, but that makes sense as I would assume they have multiple cooks. On one occasion, the liver was a little too tough to cut, they had given me a piece that was mostly gristle, slightly overcooked, with onions that were grilled but cold -- almost as if they cooked the onions first, then cooked the liver in the onion drippings, then put it all together on the same plate. Then there was one time that I had liver that tasted similar to how my grandmother made it. It was moist, easy to cut, onions were steaming just as the liver was, and it was delightful. On our most recent trip, I ordered chicken strips w/ fries and a side of blue cheese to dip. I got served ranch dressing twice instead of blue cheese and the waitress was AWOL with a whopping four tables in the restaurant being served between her and someone else with another (teenager, maybe?) running the front, seating people. The wait when there was practically no one there was wild. My food showed up with half the plate hot, half the plate cold, but all of it bland. The chicken strips tasted like they were bought in batches, pre-cooked, and frozen, almost like a Tyson premade but with zero flavor... They were hard to bite through, dry, and stringy. The crust kept falling apart from the chicken and off, and the chicken's texture was as though someone had boiled it to death before thinking "ah, nevermind, I want it fried." The ambiance of the new place is that of a Grandma's house after she's died. It looks like Grandpa didn't know what to do to move on, so he just kept everything the same. (Ick.) TLDR; If you enjoy Shellie's, chances are you're a local who doesn't know what good food tastes like. Broaden your horizons and leave town for a meal. The food in Helena is not good. It's simply not good. You're literally giving money to businesses who do not care about you, do not care to practice good business practices by ensuring their product is up to par, and don't even care to serve you what you ordered on clean dishes. With all that said, I'm genuinely surprised Shellie's has made it this far, but they couldn't have done it without all the pandering to gullible Helena-natives. read more

We ordered two Meat and Cheese Omelets and paid $2.00 extra each for three kinds of meat, Bacon, Sausage and Ham. These Omelets must have been made with Pigeon Eggs! HAHAHAH they were like cigar sized Omelets with three little postage stamp sized pieces of meat! Wow, also about the same amount of nasty Frozen Hash-browns out of the microwave, gack! It cost me $31.00, (with tip) for what amounted to two Half Meals. The food was less than average, and the amount you get for the price is really a Joke! Com'on man, it doesn't cost that much to make a normal breakfast you guys! The place is sticky on every surface (Dirty Tables and Menus), stinking of old grease and maple syrup. Eeeew! The place is buzzing with flies, landing on your face and all over the food! I would hate to see the flies in the kitchen! We were constantly flailing our arms to shoo the flies away! It was like fly mating season going on all around our heads and all over our food and table! Literally a Tornado of Flies!!! Flynado!!! Oh Yuck! I was quite embarrassed to have brought a guest with me to such a nasty place. The waiter was pretty good bringing coffee at least! This is a great place to eat. We've stopped for breakfast a couple times on our way south as it's very convenient, right off the interstate. The biscuits and gravy are dynamite. Asked for crispy hash browns, they did not disappoint. Recently, thought we'd try them for dinner. I had the finger steaks, they were delicious. Prices were reasonable and service was good. They have homemade pies, one of which is the chocolate peanut butter. It's the best pie ever! read more
