Loved this place! I ordered the Shrimp Diavolo and was super impressed. I was so full I could hardly finish it all. The sauce was creamy with a slight bite to it. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and there were plenty of shrimp! There was also a nice amount of vegetables in it. Small cut pieces of asparagus, tomato, and spinach. Goat cheese was plopped on top as well which was a nice addition to the creamy, spicy sauce. Our waiter was very attentive and kept checking in on us. The place was small and quaint. We had tickets to the Denver Botanical Garden but arrived early. After asking for restaurant availability from a young lady at the main desk, we walked a few blocks to this restaurant. Let me say, the walk was enjoyable. We're still learning about Denver and it's neighborhoods and the walk was short . I loved the hand drawn menu that is noticeable as you walk in! This place is small and intimate and we were seated quickly. Our server was friendly and let us know about the specials of the day. I tried to convince my other half to enjoy a birthday meal but he wanted something small so we chose two small plates. Capresse salad and Fried Ravioli and an adult beverage. It was very busy at dinner time and even with a reservation we waited to be seated - it wasn't long but it definitely slowed down the service. We wait about 15 minutes for our wine to be delivered. One of my friends arrived earlier coz she thought the PARTY was at 18:30hrs. When I first arrived, one of the server lead me to the Upstairs seating. When walking along, especially the Wooden Stairs, there was a WEIRD FUNKY SMELLY SMELL. EEWW?? & Hmmm.. We were seated upstairs aka "THE COVERED PATIO" since we had a HUGE PARTY of 12. I was here due to one of my friends, BIRTHDAY Party Celebration since she likes Italian Food ALOT! Our server gave the Menu and brought out "a ball of bread" and its dipping sauce some-kind of Balsamic Vinegar. She also brought out glasses of water as part of our beverages. DO TAKE NOTE: Some of the items featured on their ONLINE WEBSITE ARE NOT in the Main Menu coz they changed, hence its NOT UP TO DATE. This time around the Broth is much more flavorful and 4 of us like it. 20:03hrs : Appetizers of Calamari Fritti, Mac & Cheese and Crab Cakes were served. Between 20:46hrs and 20:51hrs : MAIN ENTREEs were sent to our table. My BIRTHDAY Friend, opt to have Spaghetti and Sauce (Add Meatballs). Her BF also opt to have the Spaghetti and Sauce (Add Meatballs). From the feedback of My Friend's BF, the MEATBALLS are so HARD AS A ROCK, aka SOFTBALL, BASEBALL. He was unhappy and voiced his concern to our server and even to the Manager later that evening. He even mentioned that this is the WORST Meatball dish he had in his entire life. Majority of the food were TOO SALTY for my personal consumption. Since we were seated upstairs, still there is the FLIES problems and even insects flying over everywhere, during the Dinner evening. *SIGH* During our dinner, one of my friend FOUND A PLASTIC in his food. Showed this Plastic to our server and our server brought it back to the Kitchen. Apparently, the Kitchen aka The Chef mentioned it was "GARLIC SKIN". We bet to differ. My Birthday Friend rate this establishment as 1 STAR at best due to the service, the food and she was UNHAPPY with all the situation aka BIG DRAMA that had happened that evening.. We talked to the Manager and he apologized several times and even COMPENSATE the items which were NOT to our satisfaction especially the MEATBALL Situation. Personally, the items I ordered were the Crab Cakes, and Seafood Cioppino for my Main Entrée. The Crab Cakes were OK aka Decent, Edible and comes with a bed of salad. BUT the Seafood Cioppino is LOADED with ALOT OF Saffron Threads, Loaded with Summer Herb Fettucini, NOT SO MUCH with SEAFOOD. The Broth was slightly salty, though at first I specifically request for this Item to be EXTRA SPICY like the SPICY ROSA Sauce in the Shrimp Pasta Menu, but it falls short. *Double Sigh* The "Seafood" items found in my order of Seafood Cioppino were clams, mussels, shrimp and salmon. It was indeed underwhelmed for my personal taste bud. *Tripple Sigh* The rest of my friends said their food were A-OK, nothing stellar, nothing fancy. The Tiramisu Martini ($6.95) were just A-OK too. It was indeed an evening filled with "DRAMA". End the Dinner evening almost at 22:00hrs. Take note since we have a HUGE PARTY of 12, its an AUTO GRADUITY of 20%. Love this place, the service and the food were both amazing! We came for our 5th anniversary on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was packed! We didn't have to wait long for an outside table, probably like 3-5 mins. We had an amazing server, his name was Jaime/Jamie (sp?) Really funny guy. You know how sometimes you just connect with people? I felt that from our server. First off I'd like to say that their bread is probably one of the best bread I've ever had at an Italian place. Toasty, warm, well-seasoned and super soft/moist on the inside. The sauce was perfection, I love anything balsamic so it really hits home. I would go back for the bread alone. Another server was so considerate, he walked by and said to be careful with the bread dipping going through the patio table grates. I was very appreciative of that, as my bf always gets food on his clothes.... :) We ordered a bottle of Rose, delicious and dry, just how I like it. It was perfect for the summer. The Filet Tip Stronganoff is definitely a manly meal, filling and a good size portion. Flavor was great and creamy for sure! I wish I had more pasta in my creamy piccta cuz the pasta was literally 2 bites, but the salmon made up for it, and it was pan fried to perfection. The chopped salad had a really good tangy flavor but I thought the dressing was a bit much, however, the Caesar salad was super delicious, with an anchovy on top. There were some customers that were seated after us in the next table, they were seated probably 15 mins after us, ordered and got their food before us. Before I even had a chance to waive down Jamie, I saw him looking at the other table and went back to the kitchen to get our food. He cracked a joke saying that he went and yelled at someone for us, I sure hope he didn't, but it was very attentive of him to notice when they were super packed. While I liked the neighborhood and intimate/cozy feel of Shells & Sauce, I thought that the food and service were average. Came here for dinner on a weekend. While there were still several open tables, we had to wait a bit before the hostess would seat us. We ended up getting the Bruschetta Pizza and Stuffed Shells Duo. The pasta dish was unique - if you like butternut squash, would recommend getting the Stuffed Shells Duo. I came with a friend for their brunch service, and we both ordered the Eggs Carbonara and split an order of their beignets. The pasta sauce was on the bland side, hence nothing memorable. My friend added some Tabasco sauce to hers, just to have some sort of kick. The beignets were good, freshly fried, and had a nice doughy consistency in the middle. This is a cute little restaurant that is extremely busy during the dinner rush. The environment is very lively and chatty so it's a comfortable environment to either go on a date, or to hang out with family or a group of friends. When we ordered our food, not only did it taste amazing but the portions were huge and we were stuffed without ordering an appetizer or dessert. It was refreshing to find a restaurant with large portions because many hipster restaurant give small portions on small plates and my boyfriend leaves unhappy because he doesn't feel satisfied even after ordering $50 worth of food. Here, the price is reasonable, the environment was comfortable, and our waiter was amazing. He was very polite and made sure we never ran low in our bread or drinks. A bread bowl with a balsamic sauce comes free when you order so you can socialize and eat bread while you wait for your dinner. There's street parking available and many other restaurants nearby so even if you can't find parking very close to the restaurant, you walk through a nice neighborhood to get to the restaurant and there's always people walking or biking up and down the sidewalks. This is a neighborhood staple and has been my go-to for brunching since 2011. The thing I appreciate the most about this place is consistency. For 7 years, no matter the gaps of time when I visit, I know what I am going to get. I get awesome food (chicken and waffle tends to be my weakness), I get friendly and fast service, I get a fun atmosphere, and I get a full tummy. (Sometimes I get tipsy too!!) It is because of all of these things that I leave happy and come back for more. Yes, reservations are strongly encouraged however, there have been days I walk off the street and sit down within 5 minutes. I blame that on dumb luck or being a solo (bar sitting) but do that at your own risk. Happy Hour: a great selection of tapas, pizzas and small plates. Happy Hour doesn't get much better than this! You get a very decent sized pizza for $5! There were tons of people waiting and we just strolled in and were seated automatically. Just do it. -Pass on the Vesuvio skillet. I was stoked to see this on the menu because I loose Chicken Vesuvio but it was pretty lackluster -Order the Chicken and Waffles, even if it's just to share. They were busy, as usual, but the service was great. We started with the garlic cheese curds. I've had many a cheese curd in my day and these were unusual but amazing. I had the Chicken Piccata. The chicken was pretty tough, but the rest of the dish was delicious. My guest had the Carbonara. I'm eating their leftovers now and it's still just as good. It was Denver restaurant week, so we were able to get an appetizer, salad, 2 entrees and a dessert for $70. We started off with drinks. Wine and a Pearfect Martini. Our waiter was helpful with selecting the wine. For an appetizer we got the bruschetta. It was interesting since it had olive in it, almost a Mediterranean flair. They also have complimentary bread and oil. Next we had the mixed green salad, this was great! For entrees we got the veal Parmesan and meatball and sausage ziti. The portions were huge! We both took at least half our dishes home, but it was so good! For dessert we had the tiramisu. I haven't had dinner here yet, but they rarely have a wait around 11am, their food is fantastic and their morning cocktails and brunch menu aren't as expensive as many of the other Denver brunches. Happy hour deals here are great. You can get a flatbread pizza for $5 or sliders (they are a decent size and come with a side salad; 3 flavor options) for $3. There are also beers for $2.50 and a wine Yelp check in offer for $4.50. I had the balsamic vinegar bruschetta flatbread pizza with olives which was surprisingly large. I couldn't finish it because I also had a portobella mushroom slider. Their slider came with a side salad which had a little bit too much dressing on it (made the salad a little soggy). The slider itself was large and had a nice shiny hamburger bun. It was very tasty (though I preferred the flatbread). Their slider options included pork belly and chicken. I also tried their horchata espresso liquer cinnamon cocktail for $9 which was horribly small and tasted like pure liquer. I always imagine liquer to be something you add a splash of in a cocktail but I strongly felt that I was drinking mostly liquer. There was also a ton of ice in my cocktail & too much cinnamon on top of the whipped cream. It tasted more like coffee liquer than it did horchata. I am under the impression that it's only called horchata because of the cinnamon sprinkled on top. We had a wonderful waitress who was kind and helpful with our linner. One thing that was off putting about this place was the stench that was strongly apparent from when I first stepped into the restaurant. It smelled like old dirty mop water throughout the whole restaurant. What can I say about Shells and Sauce? I was thoroughly impressed with our food here. My friend brought me here to celebrate my birthday. Our table was upstairs with a view of the neighborhood. I'm so happy my friend made reservations because the place was packed. I ordered the house Riesling. I wasn't to impressed, but I didn't want to send it back as the rest of my party already ordered drinks and appetizers. I had a bite of my friend's crab cake and it was delicious. I ordered the mussels. They were cooked well but I didn't care for the sauce. I know it sounds like I wasn't that happy but the experience gets better from here. I don't really want to fault our server too much because there was a serious language barrier. I think if that wasn't the case, it would've been easier to communicate with her. We had the pleasure of meeting the GM and he was WONDERFUL. I ordered the salmon/pasta dish. My salmon was cooked perfectly and the pasta was super fresh. I loved the sauce on this dish. My friends said all their dishes were delicious. We got many different desserts. Can I tell you that the Cheesecake was bomb! It was so fluffy, it looked like red-whip was the filling. This is a nice little Italian joint in the middle of the neighborhood. I just moved here from Chicago which has amazing Italian food so this is my first attempt trying Italian in Denver and the food was alright. I got the Stuffed Shells Duo with a side of meatballs. The lavender sangria is DELICIOUS! I love their happy hour. I'm GF so there's not many options but everyone I take always loves it and has a hard time deciding between the options so they usually split a few things. It's nice to sit outside, or on the porch upstairs. I've sat inside a few times as well. The servers are a little spunky and super friendly. People bring their dogs to sit outside the fence. The Happy Hour is very nice with yummy food specials, and a dollar off beers and wines (I think). Their entrees are very good. A nice hybrid of traditional Italian dishes with an updated feature or two. We've never had any food that wasn't in the good to excellent category. We tried Shells and Sauce because we live nearby, and were told by two or three different families that it was the best Italian food in Denver. But alas, Shells & Sauce falls into the "Meh. I've had better." category for me. To set the scene: I went with a friend on a Wednesday night. It was maybe about half full of people, not super crowded as it was a little later in the evening when we got there. Our waitress was really nice, but the service was INCREDIBLY slow. We were seated. Waited 15 minutes. Ordered drinks and an app. Waited 15 minutes. Got the drinks and the app, but not from our waitress, so we couldn't order then. 20 minutes later our waitress came out and we were able to order our pasta. Overall we were probably there for a little over an hour before we even got to order our entrees. Which was just...kind of annoying. And I generally try to be understanding, I know restaurants are stressful places, but it really wasn't crowded and there were other people getting their food before we even ordered. Once we got our entrees, they just...weren't great. We both got pasta dishes. They were alright, not terrible, but not amazing by any means. They were hovering below average, as far as pasta dishes go. I don't really have much to say about the dishes other than that, they were just boring and bland. This place has really good reviews, so maybe we just went on an off night. But to be honest, given the whole experience, I don't think I'll go again to find out. read more
