We had the blessed opportunity to visit Shem Creek. First of all, the drive up is picturesque, with beautiful waterways all along the way, and the views at Shem Creek do not disappoint. I highly recommend the fried crab claws and the fried platter of oysters, shrimp, and flounder. We've also eaten at the Charleston Crab House across from the market downtown, which is affiliated with this restaurant, and that was an awesome experience as well. They liked it but wished the sauce had been served on the side instead of already mixed in with the scallions and tomatoes. The standout for me was the waffle fries - they were really delicious! Food: we got the peel and eat shrimp and she crab soup to start. Both were fantastic. The main course was scallops and the captains platter, which was a combination of fried shrimp and flounder. It is a great option if you want something classic and shareable for the table. The location is also a big part of the experience. You are right on the marsh at Shem Creek, and if you time it around sunset the views are awesome. It is one of those places where you can just sit back, enjoy the scenery, and take your time with the meal. Service was really good and the staff kept everything moving smoothly even though it was busy. Only thing to know ahead of time is that parking can be a little tricky, especially during peak hours since the spots fill up quickly. Just give yourself a little extra time. Came in when it wasn't busy, which was nice, but the experience was pretty mixed overall. First thing to note: happy hour is only offered in the bar area, which wasn't made very clear upfront. I ordered the happy hour wings and was honestly disappointed. The portion was barely a serving, and they didn't even toss the wings, just fried them and dumped a heavy amount of seasoning on top. No balance at all. I also had the crab cake sandwich with waffle fries. The sandwich itself was good, but the fries were just okay at best. A lot of them were so hard you couldn't even bite into them, which was frustrating. Another downside was the pricing. I didn't like that they charge different prices for cash vs. card. Being charged extra just for using a card feels outdated and should be clearly stated beforehand. They charge a fee for paying with a card which is in such poor taste, especially when you have menu items that are $75+. That should be just the cost of doing business. Also, for a table of 6, a 20% gratuity was added to the pre-tax total, along with the CC fee. It took our food almost two hours to arrive as well. Won't be going back and would not recommend. we used to go there a lot when it was Shem CREEK BAR AND GRILL. We went last week to the new Crab House and will never go again. Ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell. The first bad was no minuet sauce. The server said that everyone asked for it so why not serve it. . I put one in mouth and spit it out. It was so bad I can't believe anyone would serve it. Next we went for one of our long time favorites all over Charleston the Whole Crispy Flounder. We have had it everywhere this one ranked in the lower 1/3 for flavor, quality and presentation.
