Located just next to campus, this bakery is very convenient stop for purchasing some bread and/or pastries for breakfasts. Having a wide selection of sweet and savory breads to choose from, I never feel tired of eating a specific bread/pastry from here. This bakery also sells cakes and drinks. For your drink options, there is milk tea with boba and coffee options, which I believe is from Peet's coffee. This location is fairly small compared to other ones that I have visited, but they still have a good amount of foods. I recommend trying the green onion bun. This is my go-to spot for delicious pastries, breads, cake slices, and sometimes even boba. The service is pretty par for the course with a take-and-go establishment and the space is always clean. Their jasmine milk tea is delicious and the boba is always the perfect firmness for me. I also love their apple turnovers, mocha/vanilla cake slices, several of their buns (ham and cheese, bacon, hawaiian bun, etc.). Delicious, light and spongy mixed fruit cake. It's been a while since I had this cake and it was still consistently very good! I was early for my scheduled pick up time and had to wait a bit. That's because they assembled the cake fresh which I don't mind at all! The fruits were really fresh! Staff were all hard at work and friendly. One even offered me a drink while I waited. I requested for no decoration on the cake because I planned to decorate the cake myself to go with our birthday theme. They were happy to accommodate. Plus, they gave me the fruits (that were supposed to go on the cake) in to-go containers. So no photo to share here since the cake decor was mine. LOL. Didn't feel like making breakfast this morning so I stopped by this bakery. For starters, there aren't a whole lot of places that are open for breakfast in the area (most open for lunch), so I appreciated that this place was available. When you get here, you grab a tray, place a clean sheet on your tray, and get a tong to help you select your items. I always gravitate towards savory options so I went for a ham and pork bun. I have been coming here ever since I enrolled at Berkeley in 2018. It is so close to campus and the pastries are so yummy! Considering its location, this spot is very affordable and when you need a quick lunch you can grab two buns for $5! You can't beat that. I've had their boba once before and it's not anything special especially considering there are many boba spots in the area but it is on the cheaper side. Here's what I got this time: Hot dog onion roll ($2.00): this is yummy but not my favourite. The roll is soft and fresh. But personally not a huge fan of the sausage. Purple romance aka taro bun ($2.75): Definitely one of my go to's. It's soft with the perfect amount of paste inside. It is not super sweet and has a subtle taro flavour so don't expect anything with a strong taro flavour. Chicken pie ($2.15): love this one. I wish the crust was a little flakier but it's still really good! There is a good amount of chicken inside and it is really well flavoured. I would definitely hear this one up before eating it though! HK Pineapple bun ($1.75): I ALWAYS get this when I stop by. It's my favourite. It's always fresh and soft and the crumbly crust on top covers the whole top of the bun (one of the important criteria I have for a great pineapple bun). Overall, definitely my favourite. I love trying out Sheng Kee's pastries. And personally I always warm mine up for 20-30 seconds in the microwave and wow they're soft and delicious afterward. Sheng Kee has been a reliable "grab & go" bakery since my undergrad days here! They have a good array of breads, sandwiches, moon cakes, cakes and milk teas! Their sweet buns are pretty decent, and my favorite to get is the pork floss buns. This time, I came to get a birthday cake for my friend- I ordered ahead online and the checkout process was smooth and simple. (Check online for their promos- they were having a 15% off discount for Valentine's day week!) I ordered the 8" fruit basket cake, and though it still looked good, I'd have to say that the actual cake looked a lot different than the one on the website. I understand that fruits are seasonal so the toppings vary, but the image online had the entire cake top covered with fruit, yet the version I picked up had a sparse amount of fruit. I've been coming here at least once every two to three weeks to grab delicious pastries and/or desserts (or coffee) ever since 2014. I usually get the HK pineapple bun, egg tarts, tea eggs, chocolate/cake slice, fruit tart, & Peet's coffee from here. It's truly a solid place to grab a quick bite to eat before or after class since it's literally right across from campus. Not the best pastries you'll ever taste but for *most* of the times I've been here, the food has been pretty fresh. Prices are very reasonable for the location, convenience, and offerings. These past few months many of my friends have had birthdays and there was no better place to go than Sheng Kee to celebrate the occassion. The selection of cakes at Sheng Kee is great and ranges from chocolate to cheesecake, and I honestly could not tell you which of them is my favorite. The taro cake is the first one I tried and from that point on I knew that they would be the place to get cakes for celebrating anyone's birthday in the future! Their other baked goods are also very nice and they have a good variety of breads and pastries to choose from, all of which are fresh. Cakes do take about a day to be completed so as far as I know you can not just walk into the bakery and pick one up. That being said, the employees are very nice and can try to get your order completed and ready for pick up in a very short time. Moldy Blueberry. The timeline is as follows. Saturday afternoon, bought several pastries. One of them being the Danish Fruit Boat. The same evening after dinner, decided to eat it. Once we picked it up, we noticed the blue berry was covered with white stuff, which I thought was the cream. Upon closer inspection, it's actually fuzzy mold. The next morning (Sunday), I called in to let them know about it and see what they would say. Directly spoke to the manager, who tells me that a different manager was working on Saturday, and told me if I wanted a refund, go to them on Tuesday, when the Saturday manager comes back to the store. Basically the typical "let someone else handle it" response. I asked what if I just come to exchange it, she says that I would still have to wait until Tuesday.... So what am I supposed to do, let it mold until Tuesday and bring it in ? The gas itself is not even worth the refund nor the exchange. Of the three Asian bakeries near the UC Berkeley campus, I frequent Sheng Kee the most often for their variety and lower prices. I also think their bread and pastries taste a lot better than 85C Bakery's - the bread portion is overly sweet at 85C. Sheng Kee's pastries aren't as fancy as Paris Baguette's on Shattuck, but I think SK is more worth it. Some of my regular choices include: + Hot dog green onion bun + Cream bun with coconut flakes + Pork sung bun + Coconut twist bun + Egg tart + Portuguese egg tart + Cheese puff cake If you can, TOAST THE PASTRIES before eating them! It makes them taste 5x better! (Exception: don't toast any pastries that have fresh cream on them, as it will likely melt all over the place.) You can also get a variety of mooncakes, sun cakes, actual cakes with cream and fruit and all that, boba, tea eggs, and more here. Mooncakes are pretty good. I haven't tried the rest of the items here yet - mainly here for the fresh pastries. read more

Like any other Sheng Kee, egg tarts were good, but not the best ever. They close midnight. How perfect for late night munchies! It was also my first time trying tea eggs, which costed $2 for two. Not knowing how they would taste, the tea eggs were not what I expected. I imagined more of a sweet taste and tea flavor, but it was more salty as if it were hardboiled eggs set in a soy sauce marinade. I rather liked it anyway. We rushed in 10 minutes before closing; the ladies were nice enough to serve us but I knew they really wanted us to get out so they could close up shop. (And there we were hoping to get some end of the day leftovers.) Naturally, not everything was fresh near closing, but we were highly satisfied for desserts. Since we went in around 2 pm, we had limited options with breads but instead we picked uo a few creme buns which we loved. Delicious french bread!!! The area near the UCB campus lacks bakeries, so I was beyond delighted when I found this place had french bread and other baked goods. The pastries come fresh out of the oven, nice and warm, at the opening of the bakery around 8 am. I'd recommend coming in the morning before the bakery's popular options get sold out!! After dropping off a package nearby, we decided to check out Sheng Kee on Telegraph near Bancroft. Sheng Kee is a Cantonese style bakery as compared to the other two bakeries down on Shattuck. Sheng Kee and its two other competitors on Shattuck are a new bakery format where they offer fancier, more unique and better quality bakery items in nicer packaging than what you might find in Chinatown. They had sesame toast bread, which I usually get my favorite Chinatown bakery. Decided to get a loaf to try. It was good but not as good as the one I get in Chinatown and it was a little pricier too. Their boba of their tiger milk tea was pretty perfect. The boba itself had good flavor and the milk tea wasn't overly sweet. The selection of Pastries can be a little intimidating if you're not familiar with these kinds of desserts, but as long as you're not easily overwhelmed, it's definitely navigate-able. Oddly enough, I come here for their fresh baked croissants. They are large, flaky and oh so buttery! Normally my co-worker and I go to Sheng Kee to grab some croissants before heading to Cafe Milano to get lattes before heading back to work. The croissants at Cafe Milano are good too but Sheng Kee's are $1.95 which is much cheaper than most cafe's! No need to get it toasted since it is absolutely flaky already! I've also tried their other standard breads like the pineapple bun, cocktail bun, red bean bun, and matcha twist bread. They're all good but since I live close enough to drive to Oakland Chinatown, I consider Sheng Kee's Asian breads to be a bit pricey. However, if you're a student who doesn't want to have to Bart or bus to Oakland or SF, the opening of Sheng Kee was life-saving.
