My favorite Berkeley bakery. Before the Pandemic we used to come to Berkeley monthly for my husband to get a haircut. While he was getting his haircut I'd shop around in downtown Berkeley and always stop at Sheng Kee Bakery. Sometimes I'd get there drink, but they are a 2 for deal and I only wanted one. I'm not sure if you could only buy one drink and get the same deal. They now have a hot section which includes chicken pies and bbq pork bao. We didn't try one this time, but next time I'd love to get a bao. I believe they are $3.25 each or something close. They have lots of delicious sponge cakes in the first refrigerator next to the other pasties. I really like there sponge cakes. The pink and yellow one is my favorite. They also have small pieces of cake in there main fridge. I'd like to try the mango one. It looks so good. They have all different types of backed goods. Some sweet and others Savery. They also have an assortment of mooncakes. I checked they don't have chocolate moon cakes. I've had them once and they delicious. Saturday when we were there we had a cream filled pastry with strawberries and blueberries in it. It was tasty but too sweet. I think everything in there was around $3.25. My favorite treat is the loaf. I don't know what it's called. It has 4 sections and is so good. I really wanted to get it this time, but I didn't know what I'd do with the leftovers as we were walking around Berkeley and I didn't want to eat it all or carry it around. Used to frequent Shengkee during undergrad so had to make a stop here on our day in Berkeley! We went on a Saturday around 5pm and some items were already sold out, so we ended up getting an egg custard, blueberry puff bun, and taro bun. Egg Custard (3/5): Pretty standard. I'm not a huge egg custard fan, but it was not that sweet and fine overall. It could have had more custard Blueberry Puff Bun (2/5): There was very little blueberry filling in the bun which was disappointing. The ratio seemed off and it mostly tasted like pastry Taro Bun (4/5): My favorite out of all the items we tried. This had a good amount of filling. Very soft and pillowy, and not that sweet. My friend also got the Green Onion Bun and the Curry Pork Sung Onion Twist and preferred these over the dessert items. She really liked the twist and would get it again, but thought the green onion bun was slightly too sweet for a savory item. Overall, the taro bun was tasty, but the other dessert items were a bit underwhelming due to the lack of filling. As a vegetarian, I wished they had more savory options. I would come back to get their custard buns as I remember enjoying them in college. read more

I tried both the Portuguese Egg Custard Tarts and Cream Puffs and both were pretty unremarkable at best. Mind you, I have some of the best examples of these pastries in the world so maybe I'm just spoiled. But if your going to make something for sale to the public, it better be the very best of your capabilities and Shengkee strikes me as assembly line factory bakery full of sadness. The Portuguese Egg Tarts crust was made with some sort of shortening as opposed to butter. This left a bad feeling on the palate and the whole thing was greasy. The Cream Puffs tasted like cardboard. Was there a single egg in the batter? And the cream resembled some kind of cultured cheese filling. Sorry Sheng Kee, I won't be returning. read more

These pastries are more expensive and often worse than the quality of Chinese bakeries I'm used to. Comparing the bolobao here to Mei Lai Wah or even a small Chinese bakery/Asian market, it is quite dry and sweet without the flaky top or light, airy pastry texture. I don't think these pastries are bad, but I think there are much better options. I do commend some of the unique flavors here, though. There are some green tea/taro varities that are hard to find other places, which is why I think this would be worth visiting if you are looking for something like that. read more

Go-to quick grab as a UC Berkeley student. Not healthy but sometimes I eat 2 breads from Shengkee as lunch between classes for $6. If you want to eat healthier, go get some real food please. They have affordable and tasty deals (my favorite being their Hong Kong Egg & Ham sandwich) that always make for a quick breakfast/lunch. They have a card minimum, but you'll easily meet it with 2 pastries. They also make boba drinks with free toppings included and a solid discount if you buy 2 drinks (around $8 for you and a friend) Service is quick and simple. Vibes are pretty similar to other Asian bakeries (trays with parchment paper & tongs) and they're always consistent with their products. Good buns! I will qualify my 5 stars by saying I've only been here once, but everything we got was fresh and delicious, and the service was friendly. I don't remember specifically what everything was called, but we got a red bean bun, a sesame bun, a black bean bun, and a sesame croissant. The bakery itself is cute and adorable, but unfortunately one of the associates completely ruined the experience. She messed up my order, and when I politely asked her to fix it, she rolled her eyes, slammed the register, and acted with a lot of attitude. She then went to get the manager, who thankfully was able to correct the mistake. It was very disappointing and concerning to be treated that way. The associate in question is light-skinned, short, with black hair. On the other hand, there was another associate working--tall, lean, and also light-skinned--who was very sweet and helpful, which made the contrast even more noticeable. Sheng Kee has a variety of fresh pastries to choose from. My favorite are the egg tarts and custard buns. Come early in the day since a lot of items run out in the late afternoons! I recommend also getting their cakes for special occasions, especially the mango mousse one. read more

Parking is always kinda tough on Telegraph but the store itself is clean and not crowded so I can usually get in and out under 10 minutes. Other favorites include the taro bread, almond cookies and their milk teas. 85 degrees has slightly better bakery items but Sheng Kee wins for the beverages. Great local spot for boba and a fast bite! Sheng Kee is a local favorite for both drinks and bread for its competitive pricing and its wide assortment. My favorite bread is taro marble bread! It's overall really good and the marbling on top is perfection. I also got the jasmine milk tea which was also good! It is a bit on the sweeter side though so I highly recommend asking for less sugar and ice as there is a lot of ice and sugar in the cup. I also tried their pudding which was good! Make sure to mix it first before eating it and to get a spoon elsewhere as the pudding did not come with a spoon itself. I will be back occasionally in the future for future breads and teas! My go-to Chinese bakery when I was young! Egg Tart (B) - this egg tart is very crispy and runs for less than $2, but I would've liked the sweetness to be intensified here. Pork Floss Bun (A) - my preferred choice of pork floss buns as they are very generous with the pork floss, creating a harmonious balance between the pork, mayo, and bun. Garlic Bread (B) - this was my favorite item as a kid; I like the strong garlic flavor, but I feel like some sort of salt and sugar or fresh herbs can help elevate this bread. Hong Kong Pineapple Bun (A) - I personally prefer this over the traditional pineapple bun as it is sweeter and more flaky. Super convenient location to grab a pastry for breakfast if you are visiting UC Berkeley. It is located right across the street from campus on Telegraph Ave. It is also one of the only locations that is open early. All pastries come pre-packaged so it is convenient if you are in a hurry going to class or going to catch the next bus or BART. I had the Golden Coconut Twist and it was quite filling. The good: I love Asian bakeries and pastries! This bakery is a great spot to get moon cakes or cakes! I tried the pandan cupcakes (it has no frosting on top) and the egg tarts. The egg tarts are slightly larger than average. The pandan cupcakes are small, light, airy, soft and very light in sugar ("not too sweet"-the ultimate dessert compliment for Asians). It was a chiffon-like cupcake that was airy and light. The egg tart also wasn't too sweet either. I liked that the crust wasn't oily or too buttery. The bad: I thought the pandan cupcakes lacked a bit of flavor and were on the bland side. They were a bit uninteresting. The egg tart shell was less flaky than other egg tarts I've had. Sheng Kee has always been a convenient place to drop in and buy consistently yummy baked goods. I stopped by this weekend to pickup a birthday cake and was so pleased by the service. Upon hearing it was for a birthday, they added on a "Happy Birthday" topper and a packet full of candles, a cake knife, plates, and forks free of charge. It definitely made it easier for me! We chose the passion fruit mousse ($28) and the cake itself was delicious. It was soft, delicate, and a very light sweetness, which I prefer. The syrupy glaze on top did have a subtle passion fruit flavor, but it was very sweet in comparison. It would have been perfect if the syrup had stronger passion fruit taste and was less sweet. I was surprised by the taste of this bakery. We had the green onion pork sung twist which was really, really yummy. The pork bun however was disappointing. The filling was less sweet than normally, which is good, but it was mainly fat which was really gross. The custard bun was ok. The custard was smooth and velvety, but it had artificial flavoring in it. One was overfilled while the other was more or less empty. All in all good but not excellent. read more
