It's been there for a long time .. I remember eating here 6-7 years ago. I was passing by oak tree and wanted to re-visit them .. it was about 6 pm and I was craving for a quick tea and snack .. nicely located right in the heart of oak tree rd. Parking outside is good... it wasn't crowded and hence the billing and service was quick . There were some tables inside to sit and eat ... Was craving for mirchi bajji and it was pre made and kept close to the billing , so people can look at it and order . The only issue was, it wasn't. Fresh . Once I ordered , they took a couple of bajjis and fried it and brought it back . Very average bajji. It was soggy and not crispy at all. It tasted a bit sour and tangy. Just had a couple of pieces and threw it out , after coming to home . Would have returned it if I had a taste in the shop itself . Disappointed ! Also orders to-go malai kulfi and of course - they gave me mango kulfi . I couldn't return it and get my malai kulfi . But the taste of kulfi was superbbb. DO NOT GO HERE... suspicion of un hygienic food. Ordered food and the following day more than half of the people who ate it fell sick ( 4/6). The symptoms started at the same time for everyone ( nausea and vomiting). After reading the other posts, highly concerned for food bourne illness at this place. Here on a trip to taste the foods in "little India"! So far, this spot is disappointing. Tandoor chicken tastes like microwaved baked chicken. No spices, no tandoor. Chole is not very tasty. Additionally, discovered they store their onions on the floor just outside the restrooms. I also saw that they had cauliflower being seasoned in a bowl on the ground just outside the men's room. This is an extremely small, hole in the wall kind of place which pretty much transports you back to one of those highway side restaurants in india. We came here pretty late by Edison standards and this was one of our few options to dine. We ordered the seekh kababs which were pretty good. They were moist and flavorful. The tandoori chicken was average amd had too much of food coloring. The paneer tikkas were a huge disappointment. They were sweet and had sautéed onions and capsicum making this dish more like a Chinese style chili paneer instead of the charcoal fired version. This was super surprising considering that the place is owned by a North Indian. We did not order the rotis or any curries which seemed a lot more appetizing. read more

Sher-E-Punjab in NJ is one of the few places I can find and trust dhaaba (road side) cuisine. Pictured here on the left is malai kebab, on the top right goat masala, bottom right dal makhni (lentils in a stew), tandoori naan and the classic tandoori roti (my favorite). Malai kebab melts and the flavor is quite strong. Goat masala had solid spice and melted as well. Their daal makhni is always top notch. The best part is that they don't add cream! It's creamy based on how well they cook it and their tarka is amazing. You can always adjust the spice level. I get a runner's high from the spice, but I love the true flavor within each dish. Sher-E-Punjab always hits the spot when I have a craving for punjabi food take out. I'm not punjabi so no idea how authentic the food is, but it does taste great. All orders are served with a side of masala onions and raita. The sabzis are light and flavorful and the breads are on point too. You can never go wrong with the garlic naan or onion kulcha. Most recently I had the vegetable jal farezi and paneer masala. Both were fantastic. We've also ordered the paneer bhurji and paneer makhani which are very good as well. I don't recommend eating in because the space is very small but this is the perfect place to get take out from. read more

This place is a hole in the wall, so do not expect it to be super clean or have Five star service or five star guests sitting there with you. For a hole in the wall the food is amazing. Was there last night and have been there over 50 times and out of 50 maybe only one time the food was decent and other times the food was great. Staff really takes care of you, but they can only do so much if the small place gets really packed. It is also great for vegetarians. Appetizers we get the papadi chat and chicken tikka and or malai chicken and they are amazing. Extremely unhygienic place. I saw with my own eyes paneer being soaked in water in a filthy bucket right outside the toilet. I felt like puking at the sight . And they are very dishonest, constantly overcharged with hidden costs. The sardar is more dishonest than the other one. If you don't believe me, go try for yourself. Decent food and convenient. Its certainly not the best North Indian food but makes for a decent take-out meal. The Mali Kofta ball collapses very quickly and the paneer makhni has very chewy paneer cubes and mediocre gravy. Aloo Gobi is was pretty good and nice portion. Hello Friends, be extra careful when you pay your bill in this restaurant. I would like to share my experience. Today, I went there for dinner with my friends, we ordered 4 Aloo Parathas, 3 Kulfis and 1 Water Bottle. When I went there to pay on the counter and asked how much bill, the gentleman on the counter calculated on a papper and said $55. I gave my CC for payment but I was thinking how can it be $55, so I asked him,1st time he got angry saying I know how to count but when I insisted him, he brought his paper and started calculating in front of me. And, I was also calculting at my end in my cell phone calculate. Calculation was like this: 4 Aloo Parathas - $ 24 ($6 each) 3 Kulfis - 10.50 ($3.50 each) 1 Water Bottle - $2 ($2 each) Total - $36.50 He said, he chargd for extra Raita (which should not as for 4 Aloo Paraths he gave us 3 Raita bowls and thats why we asked for one more bowl of Raita) but anyway, he said its extra charge. I said its ok but still its not $55, then he recalculated and said ohh sorry, it is $44, it's my mistake and he gave me $11 cash. But, I still did not buy his calculation and I was still thinking, how is he saying $44, so I went back to him and said, it does not look $44 to me and he got lil frustrated but started again calculting. I gave him above calculation and he said $2 for extra Raita. I said, it should not be but its ok, so anyway it comes $38.50, the he said 10% tax. I said ok even with 10% tax it goes to $42.35 and he said ok, I will give $1.75 more and he gave me $1.75. After coming from there, I realized NJ tax is 6.625%, not 10%. Anyway, I did not go back to him as there were so many customers eating food. But it seems, he intensily charged more and was just trying to make up his calculation by saying extra for Raita, 10% tax etc etc. Since I have been to this restautant few times in the past and never saw his bill as he doesn't give bill, just write something stupid on a piece of paper and without showing to customer charge it. I was thinking, he might have charged us more always as we never checked his bills and he might be doing this to many customers. I called to one of my friends who went with me few times and I told him this story, and immediately he said few months back he went there with his family and he did the same I mean his bill was also around $55 for 4 Aloo Parathas,1 Chana Mashala (which is almost like my 3 kulphis or may be $1 or #2 more) and 1 water bottle. He was telling me, he did not calculate much as it was over crowded but on the way, his wife was saying how it can be $55 and he realized that this guy charged him around $15 more. Since, this happened with 2 guys in the same fashion, I have doubt it is by mistake, it seems, they are doing it with many customers and many of them are not aware of this. Sarson da saag and makki di roti, Chole Poori, Papdi chatt, and Chicken Tikka.... the true tests of good Punjabi cuisine! And they passed with flying marks on all levels with these dishes. Simply delicious!! If you are craving some good Punjabi food, this is one of the places to come in Edision. I was here with an Aunt and Uncle (who were born and raised in India) and even they could not stop raving about how delicious our food was. Keep in mind you are only coming here to enjoy the food... The dining area itself is probably a step below a diner and the service is not the highest quality. But, what they lack on those fronts is made up with the deliciousness of the food. The appetizers are all refrigerated and microwaved so brazenly in front of you that you must pay yourself for your bravery to order them despite knowing that fact. Customer Service is HORRENDOUS. One of the most rude owners who are able to act this way only because their business volumes are booming. The way they treat people (forget customers) is abominable. Unfortunately, didn't have a great experience with the food. We ordered Chicken Makhani, Chicken Curry and Lamb Do Piaza with 2 garlic naans and rice. While the gravy of the chicken dishes were good, the chicken itself tasted like old chicken. Had a terrible taste to the meat itself, it was very unpleasant. They also used thigh meat instead of breast which is unusual for dishes like this. The lamb was alright. It was fast and they delivered on the time that they had said they would give us the food in but I believe that the food quantities very little and it is overpriced. The best Punjabi fast food restaurant on oak tree road hands down . My family and I have been ordering from here for many years now and never have been disappointed . The staff are very friendly. We normally do take out . Food is always packed properly . Once we place an order food is ready for pick up within 20 minutes . Their Chana masala and yellow dal are to die for . I normally get garlic or chili naan . Their naan is nice and soft and pairs so well with any sabzi you get . They make their rice in oil making it very light and delicious to eat with the meal. Sorry, but I don't find Sher-E-Punjab to be a great restaurant. Trust me, I wish it weren't the case. It's located in the mecca of Indian restaurants. Moghul, what everyone recognizes as the legend, is a stone's throw away, and once you pass Wood Ave., Oak Tree is lined with restaurants in Sher's price range. But Sher-E-Punjab, nestled opposite Blockbuster, at the outskirts of Indiantown, fails to deliver compared to them. I decided to try it out, since my fav Indo-Chinese place just five stores down, Hakka Palace, (which was owned by a real Tangra chinese couple/daughter, until I heard it was turned into some crappy Chopstick restaurant owned by Indians) was closed for a holiday, and I didn't feel like dragging and firing up my 100,000 BTU wok range. First off, the restaurant looks horrendous. The grease and smell permeates your clothes, and god forbid you wear the same clothes to your buddy's place, your friends will literally ask what crawled up your ass and died. I've smelt some smelly Indian restaurants, but this one tops the charts, badly. I didn't feel like experimenting, so I ordered some Palak Paneer (spiced spinach with farmer's cheese), which happens to be one of my fav foods. I regret doing so. It was bad. I won't get into details, but it was overly greasy, bland, cold, and simply nasty. I ate it anyway. Now I know how bad Palak Paneer can get. Crap. Maybe it was just because I ordered the wrong dish. Perhaps the severity of the hole in the wall looks hide some real good food, (which is the case with more than a few ethnic places). But I feel bad to say that It didn't meet my lower expectations. Perhaps I'll gain the courage to try Sher-E-Punjab again soon. Maybe it's changed to keep up with the betterment of its neighbors. Trust me, I hope that's the case. So, how does an out of towner wind up at a place like this? Yelp reviews, that's how! We were heading up north to the Rolling Stones show in Newark. I promised my wife that we could stop in Edison on the way up for Indian food before the show. This is the Mecca, so to speak, for great Indian food in these parts. I made the call to try this place after pulling into this lot randomly and searching for close restaurants. I just had a feeling it would be what we both wanted. There really isn't any reason to go into ambiance (of which there is none) or service (of which there is minimal). So, I'll run down the list of what we tried... Samosa Chaat - Loved the flavor, but not enough samosa in it. Sheekh Kabob - So many Indian places serve this dried out. Not this place. Juiciest version of this dish I ever had, and great tangy flavor too. Big win! Chicken Tikka - Again, juicy and tangy where other places can be dry. They obviously know how to marinate meats here. Navrattan curry - Spicy kick to this dish. It pleased my Indian wife, and made my eyes water. Good signs for both of those. Roti - Piping hot and fresh. That's all you can ask. Mango Lassi - Tasted great, but a bit overpriced at $3.99 (I've been to higher end places that make it better for $2.50). Mild complaint... would it kill this place to throw in some white basmati rice with their offerings? Keep your overall expectations a bit lower for the ambiance, try not to mind the fact that you basically have to get everything yourself from the counter, and don't bother with the bathrooms. The best Punjabi food in the Edison area. Now that Happy the owner and the original chef are back, the food is awesome and delicious. Yes, its a hole in the wall place. My husband and I were there for dinner ordered palak Paneer, Dal Makhani and Chicken Tikka Masala. They were all finger licking good. The hot lachha parathas are to die for. Sheekh kabab were tasty as always. Not so much with malai kabab. It was very spicy, malai kabab s are not spicy!! We ordered laccha paratha and chicken curry which was tasty and filling. The price of items is reasonable, not very expensive. Kulfi is made in traditional steel cones which gives the authenticity. I would not rate this restaurant as more than a 3 because for me it was not WOW. Did not feel it was better than an average Indian place in Edison. The ambience like was a typical Punjabi thaba.
