Shift Kitchen is very, very small, but it suits Flagstaff really well. The food was absolutely amazing and so flavorful! My husband had the bacon jam burger which I'm assuming is only cooked to a specific temperature, as my husband wasn't asked how he liked it cooked. It came out perfectly rare and was a MASSIVE burger patty. Served along side were the truffle fries with, "secret sauce." He loved it, especially because he made the joke that the secret is they drove to the valley for In- N- Out sauce. Haha. I stepped far out of my comfort zone and ordered the roasted corn and peach pasta. WOW! The assembly of flavors was amazing and the texture of pasta was perfect. Belly full, heart glad! read more

What a great find! I found this place searching on non other than Yelp. My husband and I were only in Flagstaff for one night, so I was happy that this was the one meal we had there. We ordered the Relleno Burger and Braised Short Rib and let me tell you this was one of the best and most non greasy burger we've ever had! We would go back just for the burger and fresh made chips. It was also a nice experience to sit at the bar/chef station where we got to watch the talented chefs at work. We had the pleasure of chatting with the chefs about the meals and had small talk. Wow. Just wow. My wife and I came here as a respite from our family Xmas vacation and we left happier than a pirate plundering a ship full of booty. We sat at the bar which let us chat it up with one of the amazing house chefs Brian. Our server Sarah had nothing but great recommendations for food and drinks. Just trust that everything you order here will blow your mind and satisfy your palate. We ordered Pickled fries, the mussel toast, the bison short rib on a bed of pumpkin polenta, the burger and a side of the house salad. Topped it off with a couple affogatos. Literally everything made us do a happy dance. Even the cocktails were hits! We can't rave enough about how happy we left this establishment. This was my first time ever buying a staff a round of drinks and getting to ring the bell. For just $15 I don't see how we could've left without doing so! If you are in town, stop by here. We had a fantastic dining experience here. Highlights: -We sat at the bar alongside the open kitchen, which was really fun. We got to watch the food magic happen and the kitchen staff was open to chatting. -They encourage you to share plates, which we did between three of us, and it was a wonderful way to connect. -The cocktails are actually cocktails that take skill to make, and they were quite tasty. I appreciated that they had a non-alcoholic mocktail options. -The pickle fries and basil sorbet were major highlights. -All of the plates we had were well-made and flavorful. Other stuff: -The restaurant is small and our server was incredibly attentive and informative. -The ambience was fantastic. Open, warm and inviting. -This restaurant is fancy and nice without being stuffy or pretentious. -Overall I thought the experience was worth the price. -If you want to go here, which I would highly suggest you do, make a reservation. read more

Coming from someone who's been in the culinary/ service industry for 10+ years... The service is one of the two stars given. The servers were nice and attentive and checked in often and always cleared things because we were at a small table. Drinks and food came out at a good timely manner too. The second of the two stars goes to the mussels toast and partially the Brussels sprouts appetizers. The Mussels Toast had every texture and flavor component you'd want. The creamy aioli, the slightly pickled spice of the fresnos and jicama for crunch and the bread was toasted perfectly and mussels were perfectly cooked. This was the best thing about this place. The Brussels were really good but when you have such small sprouts it's easy to over fry them which they were so they turned a bit bitter, however the goat cheese and honey helped with the bitterness. Overall Brussels were good. However, I truly don't believe a restaurant should stand alone on their appetizers, because entrees are usually the star of the show especially when shift has such a small menu in general. The Birria lamb tagliatelle was a good dish except that the pasta did not have enough sauce at all. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the spices were delicious, however tagliatelle is a thick pasta and needs a lot help with sauce to produce flavor, the pasta was cooked perfectly al denté it just needed more sauce... Now for the dish that ruined the experience, The Bison Short Rib with pumpkin Polenta, fried acorn squash chips and pomegranate seeds. This dish fell so flat, the short rib was dry and not cooked long enough so it was tough. The pumpkin polenta has zero seasoning to taste, the fried squash chips were good for texture and the pomegranate seeds works for a sweet bitter component but the dish overall was just not right and not worth $34. We told the server after trying 3 bites of the dish what was wrong with it and we decided to just move on to dessert to give it one more shot but even the carrot cake didn't taste like a carrot cake and the Cinnamon Toast Crunch held the most flavor out of the whole dessert... The manager dropped off the bill and said the owner took 50% off the price of the short rib we didn't even eat and was cooked terribly. We asked the server when she came back why only half was taken off and she said unless it's pretty extreme circumstances like the cook of the dish being bad they won't take the whole price off and she said they rarely ever take the whole price off. This is understandable from a small business standpoint but from a guest stand point and the dish being completely off they should've taken the whole thing off the bill. But they didn't. Definitely wont come back. We as a couple spend so much time serving people and working in this industry which I know is one of the hardest industries mentally and physically but to come here as our big dinner and spend our hard earned money for a wee little getaway during our busiest season and to have this experience sucked so bad. Walked in around 6pm mid-week and was asked if we had resos, to which we didn't, and they said they could squeeze us in if we could finish by 730. No problemo. Staff was very nice the entire time and they checked on us fairly frequently. Had the: Bone marrow app w/house made chips (10/10) - loved it. Probably the best version of bone marrow i've had. Was savory and sweet as there were figs/apples in it (i can't remember). Chips were great. Beef coulotte (8/10) - nice and tender, well cooked to medium rare, no chewiness/tired-jaw syndrome. Well flavored. Fried pork chop (9/10) - when I saw it, I was a bit worried b/c of the thickness and thought it'd be dry, but it was perfectly cooked for a fried pork chop. Still juicy and tender. Nice flavor, not too salty. Was topped with a fruity kale mixture that helped lighten it. Good size too - i was definitely full. Would definitely go here again if i ever visit again. read more

My fiance and I made reservations for a Friday night, in town on vacay. Cocktails, apps, palette cleanser and mains...extremely tasty and unique dinner paced perfectly. The sorbet with goat cheese and evoo was very special and a perfect bite type dish. We walked in and were put off by the host implying that we needed to hurry our meal because another reservation was coming at 7:30 (1.25 hours after we arrived- we also had a reservation) but then our lovely server came over and she was a joy. She was so knowledgeable about the menu and had great recommendations. We loved the Brussel sprouts and our meals were delicious. This is a cool spot and the food is outstanding. I was very impressed with Shift Kitchen and Bar when we first visited it; the service, the quality of the food, and the atmosphere are all first-tier. Sharing a meal family-style to maximize the cross-section of the menu we would experience, we ordered the duck (delicious!) a couple of pasta dishes, an intriguing dish called pickled fries, dessert, and a pair of cocktails each.  Everything we tried was tasty, creative, and nicely presented.  The portion sizes were generous, and dessert was so exceptional we were tempted to order a 2nd helping. Tip: The cocktails were inventive, tasty, and REALLY strong!  It was a good thing that neither of us was driving ;-) Prices were slightly on the high side, but the dining experience was so enjoyable that it was unquestionably worth the freight! read more

It has a fun atmosphere at the chefs counter getting to see all the chefs cook and our service was very thoughtful and attentive last night. My girlfriend and I thought the food was flavorful and good but not something memorable that makes me want to keep coming back. I tend to like the Tinderbox, Atria, Josephine's of Flagstaff a bit more but again, our evening was very solid and enjoyable just not incredible like the hype made me think it would be. If you're in town, give Shift a try and I love seeing the food scene in downtown Flagstaff continue to improve! read more

Shift is a small downtown restaurant. We made a reservation for 8, and we're seated right away. The menu is limited, but the food was good. Our group ordered pasta, short ribs, and burgers. We were told the food would be brought out when ready, not everyone was served at the same time. Even knowing that it was disappointing that the first person served was done eating before the last ones even got their dinner. One person ordered dill pickle fries as an appetizer and a burger for dinner. The server never mentioned the burger came with fries, which would have been nice to know. I went to this place because it was highly recommended on TikTok and yelp but this place was really underwhelming. The food was ok at best and the menu is very limited. Everything has an undertone and taste of vinegar and the proportions were small. The service was mediocre. There were two waiters on my table and they were both kind of passive aggressive and me and my family all felt like we were bothering them. The restaurant itself is pretty cute, it gives the vibe of a house. If you're hungry do not come here. read more

We go to Flagstaff for the Fourth of July parade, and there are only a few places open to get anything for breakfast the morning of the parade. Shift makes delicious breakfast burritos they are premade, but they are still warm and delicious when they serve them.
