Love flagstaff and when enjoying a family spring break vacation nothing is better than beer to go. Hops on Birch location has been a bar for I believe over 20 years and the new owners are keeping that local vibe going strong while bringing in amazing beers in cans to go. Small space with just a few tvs so you gotta make friends. And if I would have stayed I'm sure I would have made many, however I just grabbed a few cans with killer art that sounded great to go. While chopping it up with the co owner I sampled a few others and i gotta say they take the week of St Patrick's day serious as there was tons of Irish festive merch and food already spread out. What a dog-FRIENDLY beer pub! We were stopping by in Flagstaff, before heading back to our home in Las Vegas. And we had our 25-pound dog with us. We always travel with our precious dog, even on airplanes, inside the cabin. I was so excited to announce to my hubby (who is often skeptical) that I found a dog-friendly brewery. To my own surprise, dogs are even allowed inside the brew pub. Now that is exceptional! Was visiting Flagstaff for a few days for a little get away from the Phoenix heat. Took our dog with us to join in on the adventures. It is very difficult to find a place that will let your dog inside in the building and not be limited to the patio. Hops on Birch is entirely dog friendly so it was a great spot for us to hang for a little bit. Bonus was they were carrying a draft of one of our favorite beers from OKC. Was surprised to see it on draft as it is not a usual draft beer. Will be coming back for more pours in the future! read more

Super cozy bar. Makes you feel like you're in the mountains and it has the tavern feeling. Haha We came here after a day of snowboarding at Snowbowl. Parking lot on the street, might be difficult depending on the time. Have to pay for parking on the street, unless you find a strip of no meters, which there is one about a 4 minute walk. There was only one bartender inside working at a time we came. He was disappearing in and out of the kitchen or something I believe. Either way, it was hard to get ahold of the bartender. Not very attentive. But friendly and helpful once you get ahold of the bartender. Really like the feel of The Rustic Tavern feeling inside. They are also pet friendly, as there were two dogs inside. Hops On Birch is an awesome bar to catch some unique and local favorites from Flagstaff/Arizona. There aren't a ton of bars in town that keep up with rotating out taps and always having some fresh flavors to try out. Personally, this is one of my go to places to try something new, but also a place that I know I can find a brew that I will enjoy. The only thing that I wish was a little improved here is the events. On the weekends you're bound to have a local musician playing away on their little front end stage which is cool. But I wish that the bar itself had some more creative events to offer. At one point, they were going to host a beer pong tournament, but cancelled a few days before because not enough people signed up which was a bummer. SERVICE: The service here has always been great. The bartenders are always super friendly and welcoming to everyone which is one of the numerous reasons that this place is so awesome. On top of that, the staff is great with offering suggestions or tastes to see what you might enjoy from their list of taps. OVERALL: I really love Hops On Birch for their reliable variety in brews and friendly service. I highly recommend them to anyone local or people passing through. Background I rarely write reviews, and when I do it has always been for positive reasons. Until recently, I would have never expected that Hops on Birch--a go-to establishment for me since it opened--would be the first negative one. Hops has an almost sterling reputation with Flagstaff locals, so these words probably won't even make a dent in their reputation. That's fine. I will never go back. After a long Tuesday at work, two days before our wedding anniversary, my wife and I decided to head downtown. We often go to Hops to unwind and then grab dinner afterwards. Almost always, we bring our dog. The Event Everything was fine for more than an hour. I had two or three beers. My wife was on her second, which I had just ordered from a different bartender whose shift started around maybe six. Following a quick trip to the restroom, I stood maybe two feet in front of the bar while another patron finished his order. When she looked up at me and asked if she could help with anything, I told her I'd like another 928 and then wanted to close out the tab. For no clear reason, she replied, "I'm not comfortable serving you." Dumbfounded, I asked her why. One word. The patron next to me tried to lean in and stop me asking. Paraphrasing our interaction: "Never seen this conversation go well." The bartender spun the pay pad around and told me I had to leave, basically spitting venom that I was making a disturbance and she could get a manager to force the issue. Again, I asked why while signing, saying I had done nothing but sit there drinking and talking to my wife. I didn't tip, mostly out of shock. Also a first. After not receiving an answer, I asked her to get her manager who happened to be the same bartender we started the afternoon / evening with. All I received was platitudes that, "This is how it works. It's at the bartender's discretion." Okay. I promised to submit reviews and let anyone I know what occurred. I've lived here 17 years and have no plans to leave. Maybe petty, but here we are. I did not swear at or in any way demean or show rudeness to this person or anyone else at Hops. I never have. Also, I think it goes without saying that with my wife less than ten steps away, I made no pass, spouted no innuendo, and--mostly because I'm introverted--did not even talk to or smile at this person. The Analysis I still have no idea why we were eighty-sixed. My wife and I were talking together at the end of a long table the entire evening. Perhaps loudly at times, but not without class or minding the other patrons. The dog only made a fuss when other dogs showed up or one of us went to the restroom. The bar had maybe six people maximum the entire time we were there. What disturbance? Who was disturbed? I've traveled a good chunk of the world and seen all kinds. I'm half Asian and my wife is from the country that half originates. We're both working professionals who keep to ourselves. I don't like to assume racism, and I've seen the real thing. It's stupid. I'm not sure if this was racially motivated. I want to give this bartender the benefit of the doubt, but I have few other reasons to draw on as to why she--seemingly arbitrarily--chose me to take her frustrations out on. What I do know is that it was humiliating. As a man of pretty well over thirty, I've forgotten what it feels like to be frustrated to the point of tearful rage. This is some childhood BS I thought was well past. My wife had no idea what was happening until we were out of the bar. She's also very upset. Because we're upset, the dog is also. The End At this point, I want no apology or explanation. I expect I'm more likely to receive the same platitudes I did previously, and that's on the most positive end of the spectrum of possible outcomes. But I won't be silent either. Few people may ever read this, but I sincerely hope that those who do find a different establishment to patronize. In all of this, I've realized that the arbitrary and hurtful whims of a single person can still cause humiliation. And in that humiliation, I also realize I am not willing to let it be. I ask everyone who sees this to avoid Hops on Birch. There are many other and, now seemingly, better options in Flag. read more

So. Much. BEER. I walked inside and was immediately in heaven. I live for that feeling when I go to a tap house and am overwhelmed by my options. I didn't even know where to start. Clearly, I wasn't the only one because this place was super busy. There was but one open table that we managed to snag. I decided to start light with a rice lager from Cerebral Brewing and adored it. My friend got an IPA from Casa Agria that was also delightful. We didn't have much time, so we left after we finished our drinks, but the whole experience was wonderful and I would love to return, especially if I had some more time to chill. read more

I gave it a 1 star..why you may ask?? Racist at it's finest... female bartender saw us coming in and acknowledged us as we sat down and waited...waited...waited. She looked at us and proceeded to start washing some glasses. Then looked at us again and decided to help patrons at the bar with drinks. Finally my hubby went up and asked what the protocol was to order and she said you have to go to the bar. Something she should have advised of from the beginning. I have a picture posted of her so everyone can see. I really hope she just had a bad day and was feeling everyone should have known about the protocol to order. Us being from Phoenix didn't know it, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. But in 2021, all people should know to advise paying customers of the rules of the land and speak up. Don't acknowledge people and not say a word because it can be misconstrued as racism. Which is where I'm at. Not a good time to have this stigma when bars are trying to make it out of the pandemic.
