19 out of the 21 times I have been there the food was amazing, twice it was just O.K. but I feel like it's still a great place, and will continue to go there! I would like a few more sides, and a slightly different sauce option or two. I feel like the tea should be fresh and the lemonade should be as well. I'm from Georgia, and this is the closest to southern food as you can get around here! Their brisket burnt ends are delicious and the sauces have a good range of flavors. The corn spoon bread is to die for and really has that southern consistency which is hard to match. The apple pie baked beans aren't too bad, just a little sweet, and the homemade pickles remind me of my grandma's. The only thing is that I wish the mac & cheese had that baked texture (it's just really creamy!), but that's just a personal preference. Overall I think this place is a win for Fort Wayne, and I can really appreciate the redesign of the menu, it was definitely a good step in the right direction! read more

When you walk into a BBQ house and the dining area is lined with first place cook-off trophies, you know you're in for some good eating. Hands down the best ribs and beef brisket we have ever had, anywhere. I never knew beef brisket could be smoked and be that moist. Complex flavor combos in the rub and the BBQ sauces complement the meats perferctly. Impressive smoke ring. We were wowed. I would glady award five stars...but the sides are disappointing; "blah" would be an appropriate descriptor. A place this good should be able to pull off the whole package - amazing meats AND sides. We found this spot on Yelp while passing through on 69. Drove 5 miles off the highway to check it out. I ordered the brisket, pulled pork, macaroni, and apple baked beans. The brisket was delicious, the pulled pork was also good except it was dry. But if you added the BBQ sauce to it you couldn't tell it was dry too much. The macaroni and cheese didn't even taste like macaroni. It was like eating bare macaroni pasta with a ton of jalapeños. I'll be honest, I'm a meatavore. Shigs, as it's often known, is a perfect place for the meatavore. The barbecue is good. The sandwiches are enjoyable. The sauces are exactly as you'd want. For me though, the stand out, and what makes any good barbecue place better than average, is the sides. The corn "spoon bread" is creamy, sweet, but not overalls so, and makes a great foil to a pulled pork sandwich. The potato casserole, with its frito topping is a nice change from cold potato salad you see a lot of places. The green beans are good and smoky. The tomato cucumber salad is a summertime classic, tart enough to cut through a sweet barbecue sauce. The remaining sides suffer from going too far or not far enough. The apple pie baked beans are far too sweet. The macaroni salad is bland, and could use a pick me up, as well as being packaged away from the hot sides (it always seems to be lukewarm when received, rather than chilled). The Green Chile Mac n' Cheese just needs more. Either more green chile, more cheese, or more work. I wanted it to be a vivid trip to the southwest, but it felt more like someone snuck vegetables into my Mac n' cheese. Overall, Shigs is a go to place. This place is one of the best places for BBQ in Fort Wayne. It's a quick service, counter order restaurant, with Southern-style smoked meats and sides and some creative sandwiches. They also serve beer and desserts. I have been here several times and never had a problem with the quality or quantity of food I received for the price. The only reason I give Shigs in Pit four stars is because their service to get the food out to you tends to be slow. Even when I've been during the slow yours, and even though they have the sides prepared sitting in warmers, it always seems to take 15-20 minutes for my order to be up. This seems long, since the way they take orders is very efficient. Don't come here in a hurry during your lunch hour, but definitely come here if you're looking for some good, homestyle BBQ. read more

My husband and I recently visited Shigs and Pit after finding it on Yelp. We were in Fort Wayne for the evening for a concert and wanted to have dinner beforehand. He absolutely loved his burnt ends, they were moist and delicious however the ribs that he and I had were disappointingly dry and tough. As for the sides, we each had the green chili mac and cheese, flavor was good but it was very oily, and the spoon corn bread, which was very good. We ordered desserts and they were very disappointing. The banana pudding was grainy and the pumpkin bread pudding was served cold and without the normal runny icing that I am used to on top. read more

My sweet southern man and I were out on an adventure day together, and we were looking for something interesting for lunch. I did a quick search of the area and pulled up this diamond in the rough. We navigated there, it was an early Saturday afternoon. Upon first glance, the place was quaint, clean, and inviting. I had heard from friends that the burnt ends were where it's at, so I ordered that with 2 sides. My love ordered the pulled pork with 2 different sides, so we could sample each other's and try new things. First of all- the burnt ends were amazing- lived up to the hype and then some! We ordered the Mac n cheese (with green chilies)- mind blowing! The Coleslaw was crunchy and had just the right amount of vinegar. We had the cheesy potatoes with bacon as well as the southern style green beans- both equally delicious. We had to box some up to go- couldn't finish it all together and certainly didn't want to waste a bite! For the money, about $14/pp, there was enough food for us for 2 meals (lunches). I would rather have ate at Applebees.. The meat wasnt bad, but the fries had to be ate with a fork cause they was so small and skinny and mine looked like they was the scraps you find floating in the deep fryer.. The BBQ sauce was so watered down it didn't even stay on the meat. If they improved on the quality of the fries and thickened up the BBQ sauce then maybe,just maybe I'd eat here again..
