A great spot if you're craving some hearty broth!! They specialize in bone broth dishes so if that suits your fancy, I highly recommend this place. Also a great measure of quality for Korean restaurants are the staple side dishes like kimchi and diced radish kimchi, both of which were superb and fresh here! Service was quick, no-nonsense style. Not overly friendly, but not rude in any sense. Food comes out quick after you put in your order and they can refill side dishes at your request. They were pretty busy for dinner so don't expect them to give 100% of their attention to you if the place is packed. I've seen some complaints about the broth not being seasoned. The chain is from Korea and I heard the staff spent 4 months learning how to prepare everything properly. We went last night and the place was already getting packed from word of mouth. Shin Chon specializes in sullungtang, a Korean ox bone soup that has been cooked for many hours until the soup is milky from the bones. I've gone to Shin Chon multiple times since it opened a few months ago and consider it my go-to place for sullungtang. FOOD: The menu is a bit short and primarily consists of sullungtang with different meat options like oxtail, brisket or tendon. The menu has other soup options like spicy yukgaejang and galbitang (beef short rib soup) as well as non-soup options like dumplings and braised short ribs/oxtails. I've tried almost all of the menu items and can honestly say you won't be disappointed with anything you order. The sullungtang is nourishing and really hits the spot on a cold day. You can season the soup however you'd like and can ask for chili paste if you want to spice it up. Kimchi (cabbage and radish) is the only banchan provided and is absolutely delicious - especially the radish kimchi. PARKING: The restaurant is small and tucked away in the building neighboring 9292 Korean BBQ. You'll find parking is very limited directly in front of the restaurant so plan to park in the 9292 parking spaces if you decide to frequent Shin Chon. They are known for the sullungtang and it didn't disappoint. I ordered their combo sullungtang and you can tell the milky broth is not watered down and cooked with bones, tripe and other meats to make it taste rich. There was a little too much tripe in there for me and next time I might try their regular sullungtang or ask for no tripe but it was still delicious. It comes with a generous portion of radish kimchi which was my favorite and regular kimchi. Their fried dumplings were also really good and the batter for their seafood pancake was great and packed with seafood. Their mandu guk and yukgaejang was also pretty good but I would stick with the sullungtang if it's your first time. read more

This place is a MUST for seolleongtang. Seolleongtang is a Korean ox bone soup that's cooked for many hours to an entire day. This allows for flavor to be extracted from the bones and other beef parts. When fully cooked, it looks milky/cloudy. It's best commonly flavored with salt, green onions, and red pepper and eaten alongside rice and banchan (side dishes). I love seolleongtang and find it to be one of my favorite comfort dishes, especially during the colder months. It's a dish I often order at Korean restaurants. When we first discovered Shin Chon and their specialty with seolleongtang, you can only imagine my excitement. The menu isn't extensive with no pictures. Aside from seolleongtang (and there are different kinds of seolleongtang that you can order), they also have oxtail soup, cabbage soup, galbitang (beef short ribs soup), beef knuckle soup, dumpling and rice cake soup, spicy beef/vegetable soup, beef/vegetable platter, braised short ribs, braised oxtail, seafood pancake, bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), and dumplings (steamed and fried). The seolleongtang is delicious and flavorful. I also like their braised oxtail, dumplings, bibim naengmyeon, and seafood pancake. Frankly, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of their dishes. Service is friendly and attentive too (even if you don't speak Korean like me!) - we always felt that the owners and servers were accommodating and warm. read more

This place is great! Noticed this place when I was going to Cafe V, as it's located on the other side. You may miss it because it's not visible from Duke St. but you'd be missing out. If you're a fan of Seoulangtang you need to come here. There's a few places in Annandale that serve it, but this place is by far the best. There's a few other items on their menu that I'll try as the weather gets colder, but based on my first trip I can't recommend this place enough. read more

Just finished a bowl and starting this review as I wait for the check. Just opened two weeks ago and was excited to see a Korean Bone Broth Soup house! My hopes were high to see a suhlungtang establishment finally being built in VA. After experiencing Ktown in LA for years, my love for korean food skyrocketed. For 30 years I hated this soup growing up; didn't understand the allure the older generation had for it... until Hanbaht Restaurant in LA. So to see korean cuisine get better with these newer spots, I had high expectations for this place. Let me get to the point. Overall Score: 3/5 Ambience is nice, fresh but also of course it is; it's spankin new. Service was nice. Now to what ultimately matters ... the food? I was unfortunately disappointed; to the point I wouldn't come back on my own. To be candid, you can tell they are genuinely creating an authentically methodical bone broth. The soup is HEARTY. It's Milky, thiccc, and fatty - so you absolutely know it's broth from hours of brewing. But the flavor? it's non-existent. Very confusing to the brain. I had to put 3 scoops of salt to make it taste balanced. I will shamelessly compare them with Hanbaht LA because, there, you literally don't have to touch the soup. Just add the green onions and it's kotdamn magical. It's like having filet mignon, medium rare, but in bone broth form; better eat it as is. But... I also want to be brutally fair, and say that maybe this just a different style?? Perhaps its so traditional, like 1800 Joseon Dynasty-traditional, that's the way our Korean people had it. So perhaps the very old generation will love it. For myself, it was just absolutely uneventful to my tongue, but filling and hearty in my stomach. Technically made right, but tastefully dull? (still trying to pin it down) Meat quality: A+ One thing that def stood out was the meat! It was tender, fatty and almost juicy (unlike some places in centreville whom shall not be named; but is the only one open 24/7 :P) You can tell they payed attention to the details and made sure it wasn't rubbery and dry like most places. But also don't expect a lot. Serving was sort of scarce. Last but not least, the side dishes. sigh... disappointed. If anyone's a suhlungtang lover, they know that Kimchi and Fermented Radish is the cherry on top. The Kimchi here was too fresh, unfermented and did not compliment the soup. Fresh Kimchi means less flavor, so it's not fresh the way us Americans may view the word. The radish? it was salty and unfermented which is an absolute no go in my book. I want that juicy tang! Price? sorry but it's not worth $15.99/bowl. That's just too expensive; they're more expensive than the post-pandemic inflation prices in LA. Yes it's hearty, and methodically made, but I personally wouldn't pay that much. I will continue to search for a comparable suhlungtang experience as when I fell in love with it. Honestly one of the best korean restaurants in the area. They have a very specialized menu consisting of soups but they are very delicious. You can taste the thick bone broth and when I've brought home leftovers it congeals in the fridge which shows you the content of the collagen vs just water. Their kimchi is one of my favorite in the area and I will literally order another bowl of rice to just eat the kimchi. Love love love the more diverse, mom & pop shops coming to Annandale! This place is very much a hole in the walls, although decorated nicer. They have menus that are pieces of papers just stapled together, only bottled water, and when you speak to the servers, there's a 90% chance they only speak Korean back to you, but we're all trying our best here. The menu doesn't have pictures but is descriptive enough to get around. They are known for their sullongtang so make sure to snag one of those! You have to season it yourself so make sure you don't over salt it and add lots of scallion! The braised oxtail dish is also one of our favorites. It is flavored more similarly to Chinese dishes. I just heard a Sull long tang soup place Grand Opening in Annadale, VA. I had to try it out! Shin Chon is brand new & clean traditional Korean soup restaurant that specializes in Sull long tang soup. The interior is modern/ rustic, which lends it a great vibe but, Above all, the food has to be delicious. Honestly, the soup here is so mouth-watering delicious. The authentic taste is deep and rich and reminds me of being in Seoul. The quality of meat is tender and soft 10 out of 10. The radish kimchi is so good, and they have napa kimchi also. Let me start off by saying. I am not a big food review guy. But, I have to say the soup here was amazing!!! Let's start off by talking about the broth, the soup was clean and had a deep beef and oxtail flavor within every drop. The soup was very reminiscent of traditional homemade soup my mother would make when I was not feeling well. Not only was the broth on point but, also the meat was tender and soft and the noodles was smooth and bouncy. Also I would like to note that you could tell there was no MSG or artificial creamers used in the making of the broth. In other words it tasted Authentic!!! All of that matched really well with the sour spicy radish and freshly made kimchi that came with it. Not only was the food great there but, the service was just as awesome. The weather is a bit cool today and we thought seolleongtang would be a perfect meal to treat ourselves. Firstly, the restaurant is beautifully decorated and features lots of wooden accents with an extremely warm and comforting design. Admittedly, I am trying to connect more with my Korean roots and don't have the best Korean, but still felt welcome and had a wonderful meal. The menu currently only has a few items which to me is good thing. They know what they're doing. We were able to place our order very quickly and service was friendly and prompt. The seolleongtang was milky and had no excess fat. The slices of beef were nice and tender. It was very refreshing and the tables are always restocked with salt and green onions to adjust to your taste. The kimchi is crunchy, fresh, and packed with flavor (not overly spicy). It's a good contrast to both the soup and pajeon. This is my favorite seafood pancake I've had. The pajeon is fried perfectly brown while the seafood stays tender. I'm used to other places having a bit more chew especially with octopus, squid, or shrimp. Here, the pancake is a bit fluffier and significantly more tender than others. The beef and vegetable platter was solid. The dipping sauce added a lot of flavor depth. Overall, I have nothing bad to say. We left very full and happy.
