So disappointing! Had to show my daughter the beautiful Brown Palace. We were hoping to sit at the bar and learn a little history, but instead we got an extremely rude bartender. Condescending! We decided we didn't want our tip to go to him, so we asked to sit at a table. We ordered the calamari and it was pretty bad. It said lightly breaded - but it was heavy and tasteless. I stopped by twice. The first time was later in the evening for dessert and after dinner drinks. The restaurant was not crowded and we were seated at a table in the back corner. The bread pudding dessert was amazing. However, I went back for lunch the following day with a group. We sat at the bar. The restaurant was packed and while close tables were fine for late night, I'm not sure it works for a lunch crowd. The portions were huge, but my cheesesteak sandwich was just ok. My first visit was less than stellar so I decided to try again a week later. On my first visit (a Thursday) I was given a happy hour menu. $5 wells sounded really good for this locale. The bartender was less than attentive and not talkative or friendly at all. I ordered two well drinks before happy hour ended but was charged full price when I cashed out at 6:20pm. I asked about it and he claimed he must have rang them in after 6 but still only gave me happy hour price for only one drink. My second visit was on a Tuesday. This time I was told there is no happy hour menu. Not the same bartender but same indifferent attitude. Did his job but nothing more. I ordered food this time. Prime Rib was about average at best. I live nearby and really wanted to find a place with great food and service which I am willing to pay for. $10 for a well drink, no friendly interaction and mediocre food....needless to say I won't be back. The dry aged burger has been excellent on previous occasions. Today the food was fine, it was the bartenders service that was questionable. Sitting near the taps, a keg emptied and I was showered with beer. Down my arm...in my hair...the bartender apologizes and hands me a bar towel. Then my burger comes sans one of the toppings. The Sunset Wheat ran $5.75 a pint. A little high considering I left wearing one. This is fourth experience, and by far the worst experience there so far. The burger is typically a 4.5 of 5. A neat place for a hotel bar, but a bit cramped if you're wanting a table. They've got a good selection of food for a tavern (the kobe burger was delicious) and a decent beer selection as well. I've been coming here for years. It's one of my favorite places to go when I'm in Denver. Took a friend here two nights ago, was really looking forward to it. Service, via Ian, was outstanding and personable. Our salads were great. We ordered a filet and a buffalo rib eye. Can't speak for my friend's filet but my steak wasn't very good. I suggest the kitchen TRY the food they make frequently to avoid complacency. There was nothing special about it. It was slightly tough, not thick and expensive. A bit unusual for me, but I had a ribeye the night before in some random restaurant on the Western Slope and it was outstanding, and it was $12 cheaper. This is DENVER! There's supposed to be great meat. My benchmark for great steak is Peter Lugar (I'm a NY'er). They consistently nail it every time. I really suggest the kitchen look deeply into their repertoire and make sure they really believe things are up to snuff. Now, here's something else. What's with serving these entrees in bowls?? This isn't just some picky afterthought. The tables in ST have low slung seats, that means that you have to raise your elbows to eat. Putting steaks in those bowls means that in order to clear the rim of the bowl to cut your steak you have to raise your hands beyond what is comfortable. Steaks belong on plates, not those bowls. Oh, why didn't I return my steak?? I was enjoying a mini reunion with my buddy and was loathe to alter the vibe of the meal by sending it back. I hate to think that on my next visit I have to find another place. The Ship's Tavern is a classic spot and I'll return, but with considerable scrutiny. read more

We enjoyed the Brown Palace and spent the day admiring the beautiful hotel. Sadly, it seems the renovations will not preserve it's future. Glory of the past is being dimenished slowly. Some of the floors had cheap looking furniture added and nothing to resemble the hotels statis. It is over rated at this time. We ate in the Ships Tavern and it was very nice. Ordered a lunch meal and we all got soggy buns. No one wanted to mention this to each other and finally a younger one did. If we go back we will order our sandwiches with the bun on the side and build it ourselves. This really was a shock. Ruined the sandwich. Then the cake came. Beautiful in looks and big. It had the taste of any store bought economy cake and was a total disappointment. Just overall it was disappointing. Waiter was pleasant but the food is far below standards of any restaurant for a lot less. Doubt we will ever eat at the Ships Tavern. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the bread on the sandwiches. Very unspectacular. We're staying at the oxford and wanted a change in a scenery, we should've stayed near the oxford. Lookin for a 10p dessert so we walkd .75 of a mile, freezing ears and all. We arrive and notice its half empty, but the pleasant hostess says they only have one table open that seats side by side. Well ok atleast its with my girlfriend. The waiter was beside himself with excitment when we told him we were just looking for dessert. The desserts took forever and a half to arrive (20 min.), the pineapple upside-down thing was horrid...the chocolate lava cake was bite size. overall not going again....ever. i'm sure their food is good, but the service was not very good at all. read more

Everything was okay. Between the two of us we were debating between 2.5 and 3.5 stars. As a server, a lot of things were done wrong. I asked for a margarita and she started listing vodka and asked if I wanted it dirty. She seemed new which is fine. Then we ordered our prime rib rare and it was brought out medium so it tasted like a pot roast. Our mussels for $18 had 9 in mussels in total. I was a little shocked when my coworker booked this venue for our lunch given the 3 stars on Yelp. But I was pleasantly surprised. We had a reservation, the table was ready with waters already on it. Very efficient! They gave us some complimentary bread - decent / average. Ordered the soup of the day, which was chicken noodle. I didn't want the full portion and the waiter accommodated by only bringing out a cup size. Also ordered the philly cheesesteak. Oh my goodness - that will feed 2-3 people. It is huge. I selected the fresh fruit, and it was very nice fruit (I hate when the "fresh fruit" at other restaurants are nasty). Server was super nice and knowledgeable. read more

We recently stayed at the Brown Palace and had lunch at this Tavern on Day One. I ordered the lobster sandwich. It was terrific. The bread was made on site and the lobster was plentiful, fresh and tasy. I also ordered a Marker's Mark Manhattan. They pour a real drink in that bar. We came back much later to see what was going on as they have a pianist later in the evening. People had so much fun, singing and laughing. The pianist was a really good sport. I've heard great things about The Ship Tavern and, it being part of the Brown Palace, I was excited to have an opportunity to finally try it out for Restaurant Week. Had I been to a dive diner on Colfax, the food and service probably would've been significantly better. First, I was seated at one of their two-seaters with a pole behind it. No problem there except as a taller person my feet were getting stepped on by other patrons headed to their tables. And my server couldn't be bothered to even acknowledge me for at least 10-15 minutes. Mind you, this was 515 pm, not the heart of dinner time. Typically the food will make up for things. The dessert was the best item, compared to the seafood chowder and the signature item prime rib. First the seafood chowder was so bad that the seafood almost couldn't be tasted -- because the soup had so much flour and was incredibly thick (not like a chowder, but like a lot of flour in water). I believe this made me ill, as I soon got an upset stomach from it being clogged with this. Also, the server didn't bother to give me bread -- maybe because I was dining solo? but everyone else received bread. Then the prime rib arrived, closer to medium than the requested medium-rare and with so much fat-gristle that half of it was inedible from the fat or overcooked aspect. Plus everything from prime rib to potatoes and veggies were immersed/saturated in some sort of sauce that seemed thicker than au jus (whatever happened to letting the food flavor speak for itself -- I guess it couldn't and this was necessary?). Combined with the horrible chowder, I got to a point where I couldn't eat any more and felt nauseous. To take high road, I asked my server for a to-go box -- mind you, my meal 70% uneaten -- based on having an upset stomach. As an aside he said "you don't want your dessert to go, do you?" -- well yes, I'm paying for it so yes of course. And then I had to wait at least 15 minutes before I had to beg for the bill -- again I said I had an upset stomach (I didn't say, "your awful food has me on the verge of throwing up") and so you'd think the server would've been clued-in to bring the check with the to-go boxes. Then he cheerfully wished me a great evening -- yes, good customer service in general, but not if you can see I was physically ill and didn't eat 75% of my meal. To summarize, maybe I was just unlucky and/or maybe this establishment serves excellent food to those not dining during Restaurant Week. Regardless, based on this indifferent service and horrific food, I won't be back, nor will I recommend this restaurant to friends, family or colleagues. read more

We sat at the bar, and despite the fact that it wasn't that busy, and that the managers were behind the bar, the bartender couldn't manage to keep our drinks full, or remember our food. A bit disappointing, given the Brown Palace's storied past, beautiful surroundings and full-freight pricing. Crab cakes were soggy, Club Sandwich was filled with a brick of packed lunch meat and the truffle fries arrived cold. The server, though pleasant, did not know which beers on the menu were lagers, or IPAs, or pilsners, etc. On the upside, this place has the nautical pub theme down: dark wood, beautiful model ships and just the right number of seats. High ceilings and big, southern facing windows keep it from feeling too dark. I've been delighted by the excellent food in Denver during these unexpected days here. Our visit to Ship Tavern last night was the definition of a mixed bag. We got into the hotel a little late and after a full day on the mountain we didn't want to go venture out into the cold Denver night for food. I had a $10 discount at the hotel's restaurant so we stopped by here: Food: I had a Caesar salad. Got the appetizer portion and it was so big that my GF mistakenly thought that the waiter brought out the entree version. Not being that hungry we both ordered something off the appetizer menu. Her lamb chops and me crab cakes. While the lamb chops were good they were ultra salty. As my GF said "I enjoy salt but that was way too much." I thought the crab cakes were pretty good. Definitely enough to fill me up. The highlight of the meal was definitely dessert. I had the homemade apple pie which takes 25 mins but was totally worth it. Service: Saw a previous review that said Francisco was a good waiter. I would have to strongly disagree. I found the gentleman to be disinterested at best. It took about 10 mins for him to acknowledge our existence and then everything was a struggle after that. Water took at least 5 mins to be refilled, he brought other tables complimentary bread but forgot our table and then he admitted that he accidentally gave our bread to a single diner a couple tables away. Again we ordered appetizers and they took 40 mins and the response from Francisco was "Oh let me call and see where they are". At the end of the meal I was trying to grab his attention so that we could order dessert to take back up to our room and tried to wave him down 3 times and he looked right past me all 3 times. I remarked to my girlfriend that I must be in the Sixth Sense or something and she's the only one that could see me. If the restaurant had been busy I might have understood some of this behavior but each member of the wait staff had maybe 2-3 tables at that time. When we were waiting for our apple pie I went over to Francisco, who was at the hostess station tabulating receipts, to tell him we were going to explore the lobby while we were waiting he told me he was leaving for the night and someone else would handle us for the rest of the night. When I finally spoke to the MOD she seemed very uninterested that two appetizers took 40 mins to come out but was at least apologetic about the salt chops my GF ate. If I was 15 years older and dressed in a button down shirt I'm sure that we would have been treated differently. I only gave them 3 starts because the food we had was overall really good. The service and manager reaction of that service left a lot to be desired. Not sure if I'll ever make it back here but the service of the hotel definitely doesn't match the service in their restaurant. Night and day difference. read more

Beautiful historic hotel and tavern. Started with a Caesar Salad. Nothing special, but passable. Bread was home-baked and very good - probably too good as I usually pass on bread. Ordered the ribeye med-rare. Excellent. I substituted mushroom for baked potato and was delighted when the dish was presented with a healthy portion of portobello mushrooms. This is really more of a 1.5 star, but I'm feeling generous. We attended with a large group with a reservation. The first thing we noticed was the smell. I am a seafood lover, but the smell of less-than-fresh fish was overwhelming and made everything seem unclean. When asked beforehand if we could request separate checks, our server told us no, it was too hard, we would have to calculate our own totals at the end. It certainly would have been much easier for him to create separate checks. Three of us at the table were served inedible food. One meal (a sandwich) was comped. The others were sent back uneaten with no acknowledgement from the server. The "risotto" was white rice swimming in oil, no amount of salt could save it. We still had a nice time due to great company, but were really disappointed to spend over a hundred dollars and go home hungry. read more

Really poor experience for early dinner on a Friday evening. Room was full, waitress was inattentive, food was overpriced and mostly subpar. Four of us dined. Two of us ordered poached shrimp which came undercooked. Not sure how that happens when the food is cooked well in advance. Sent back and did not pay for the shrimp. One in the group ordered the burger, and it came out perfectly cooked. Another ordered the bison burger medium rare and it came out grayer than the moon. Sent back. Ate dinner here, again, April, 2012. Food is great, elegant place, wonderful bread basket!, service on a BUSY prom night (*) was excellent, we arrived 15 minutes late, they were so nice to us. The food is just the best, you can get a fancy dinner for dinner, or a sandwich. It is where I want my wake! I am not kidding because the drinks are GENEROUS!!! (*) I noticed how the waiter spoke to the prom couples, he spoke to them as adults and was so kind and gentle, they were a little akward, one spilled their water....the waiter was a class act, these young people will remember the kind way they were treated someday, I am sure. read more

We visited the restaurant multiple times during our stay at the Brown Palace. The food and staff were excellent. They were attentive to our requests. The piano player, Jon, was phenomenal. He played wonderful music for us to enjoy our delicious meals too. The meals were very filling. Definitely will go their again next time we are visiting. The calamari is wonderful read more
