After interviewing 11 painting companies, I chose DaSilva Painting to redo my painting, for 3 main reasons: 1) When Marcos came to meet with me (twice!), not only was he knowledgeable but he knew I had been burned and did everything possible to gain my trust and to reassure me that he would be responsible for the end results. Before and during the project, communication was responsive, which was one reason I felt comfortable hiring them. After the work was completed, we discovered bubbling and peeling paint in one room. The foreman, Pompeyo, attributed the damage to recent earthquakes and said the company would repair it. I appreciated their willingness to address the affected areas, but the earthquake explanation did not appear supported by the condition of the wall, particularly because the older underlying paint layer appeared intact. What made the situation especially difficult was the lack of accountability during the follow-up. Rather than acknowledging that the bubbling and peeling could have resulted from preparation or application issues, Pompeyo presented an outside explanation as though it were established fact. His explanations did not appear consistent with what was visible, and I felt that he was more focused on avoiding responsibility than honestly evaluating what had gone wrong. When I tried to coordinate the repair and asked reasonable questions about the work, the company's tone changed. Sean Love, the owner, became defensive and responded to my concerns in a condescending manner. He described me as "challenging" and said that my partner was easier to work with. I found that comparison inappropriate and dismissive. During the actual project, I had never been characterized as difficult; that description only appeared after I raised concerns about the quality of the completed work. I am not white, while my partner is, and the comparison stood out to me. I experienced the interaction as having racialized undertones: I was labeled "challenging" for following up about a legitimate workmanship issue, while my white partner was held up as easier to work with. Although the initial service was fine and the company agreed to repair the specific affected areas, I found the post-job experience extremely difficult. Pompeyo's unwillingness to take meaningful accountability, combined with Sean Love's defensive and condescending response when problems were identified, made it difficult to have a constructive conversation about the work. The lack of ownership and the way I was treated after raising a valid concern left a very negative impression.
