The food is actually really good...IF you can get it! They run out of stuff most days by about 3pm and I'm not just talking about Bakery items. I've went quite a few times to get a salad (they have great salads...a million times better than kneaders salads) and they're out of either lettuce or turkey or something else. This has been on-going for a couple years, so it's obviously mis-managed b/c that's unusual. I can't be the only one going thru the drive-thru at 3pm for a salad only to get told they're out of something. Also sometimes the customer service is not that great.. just kinda meh..like they'd rather be somewhere else, but I find that's the case these days wherever you find younger people working. The guys are always nice..it's usually the girls that act annoyed. One other thing was the other day we bought some sweet rolls and they were definitely stale. AVOID THIS PLACE. Inefficient, and quite honestly, ran by dumb, distracted employees. I called ahead and ordered sandwiches. The person on the phone was a moron and couldn't take down my simple order. He asked what day I want to pick up the sandwiches when I said I will be there in 10 minutes.... Um today. I get to the restaurant and paid for entire 5 sandwiches. I only got 4 sandwiches. One of the sandwiches I got with no bacon.... the sandwich had only tomatoes and lettuce! Wtf! I love Shirley's. I was first introduced to Shirley's not realizing where they were from about 10 years ago when a friend brought me some orange sweet rolls with cream cheese frosting! Sooo good! Since then I have been back many times, filling out multiple stamp cards when ordering at least a dozen sweet rolls. Then I decided to try their cafe foods when they moved to their new location and wow, I can now get sweet and savory foods in one stop. Time for an update! Shirley's stepped it up and I need to give them some props! The lunch menu at the new location is just great now, complete with a drive-through. They make everything to order so plan on more than a super-quick wait for the food. It's well worth it. The baked goods are still royalty at Shirley's. Try everything. I was happy to see a longtime provo baking institution opening up a full fledged restaurant. I was not happy after going to said restaurant. This is annoyingly a carbon copy of Kneaders, which bothers me on a few levels. First off, it looks like a scrapbook store. It's new, so there's that at least. Second, the employees are inept high school students. Awkward. And third, the food is just not good enough to make me put up with points one and two. I ordered a salad, and we were staying there to eat. My salad was literally crammed into a tiny plastic takeout container. It was impossible to eat as it was spilling everywhere, and was not up to par for an entrée size salad. Husband had an unremarkable sandwich on subpar bread. Shirley and I used to have a thing. She was close to my work, so during my lunch break I'd walk over, get a quickie, and go back happy and satisfied. The one day she quit the afternoon deli-ites. No more cold turkey. No more beef. But now she's back. Sure, she's too far to walk anymore, but she's willing to meat me. I had to go. She had sample cinnamon rolls and carrot cake. It was awesome, but I made a mistake--I cannot resist a good meatball sandwich. My group got a turkey avocado, a BLT, and some soup. Everyone's stuff came before the meatball--in fact it was a long delay. When it came, it wasn't an Italian meatball. It was some teryaki/BBQ ball and cheese on a roll and it didn't do it for me. Shirley's is the place I always end up at when I don't know what I want for lunch and I'm stuck in the 5 mile radius of restaurants close to work. It's not bad, but I never find myself "craving" anything from Shirley's. Probably because its literally the exact same thing as Kneaders. And I'm not a big super fan of that either. It's sandwiches, maybe even "fancy" sandwiches, but sandwiches nonetheless. I had an issue when I came here once at 4 pm and literally every single pastry item on their menu was sold out. I get it. Bakery. Fresh. Whatever. But I'm still annoyed that they were sold out. I drove over to Kneaders and got a fruit tart within minutes. I think Kneaders just prepares better? I don't know. All I know is that it was annoying and the girl on the drive through speaker was absolutely clueless that I was there in the line, yelling "Hello?" into the speaker while she talked with her friends ON THE MICROPHONE? It's weird all around and I JUST WANTED AN ECLAIR. The sandwiches are decent here. Last trip I had turkey, cranberry and stuffing sandwich because I like to pretend it's Thanksgiving every day. The sandwich was cold (I was hoping it would be hot), but decently tasting. Not my favorite faux thanksgiving leftover sandwich, but it was fine. I also had a sugar cookie. Which had cloves and cinnamon in it so I really have a hard time calling it a sugar cookie when it tasted vaguely like a snickerdoodle. Whatever. Now I'm just being a bitter dessert elitist. All in all, Shirley's isn't a bad choice. I know lots of people love it. I loved it a lot more when it was small and less known (hipster Rebekah comes out with a vengeance) because I think it tasted better and was less mass-produced. But I don't hate it and I don't wish I was on a different galaxy when I'm eating it. So I guess that's a plus. read more

I tried Shirley's Bakery and Cafe for the first time on Friday, May 16. I was ready to try something new and a bakery/cafe is right up my alley. When I walked in I noted that the store was going for a Kneaders feel and for some reason that didn't sit well me. I'm not a fan of copycat restaurants. They have a LOT of rolls, which are their forte; orange, raspberry, dinner, butter flake, etc. You cannot deny the rolls are beautiful and delicious. My hubby and I went for lunch. I ordered a Veggie Pesto Panini and he had the Turkey, Bacon, Avocado. He raved about his sandwich, as did I. The pesto sauce really made the sandwich, it was creamy which I liked. The veggies were very fresh, yum! They brought us samples of the raspberry rolls....yes please! And my husband also ordered an elephant ear. Those have never been interesting to me in any way, but I tried his and it was both flaky and chewy. Great flavor! I'm going back to Shirley's...for my daughter's graduation lunch. I really like Shirley's! My mom stayed at a Marriott nearby awhile ago and would pop in for a treat, and she recommended it to me. I'm glad she did! It's similar to Kneaders except, in my opinion, better and fresher. Their sandwiches are REALLY good and made on their fresh, homemade bread, and you can't go wrong with any of their pastries (my husband and I recently took home a 12-pack of orange rolls and cinnamon rolls, which were insanely delicious). I wish there was one closer to me, but I do visit Utah county pretty regularly. The pricing is very reasonable as well. I highly recommend this restaurant and bakery! read more

I just love how beautiful the outside is. Years ago it was a nasty looking burger joint so I'm glad it got a big upgrade. What we love: any of the fruit flavored rolls (especially the orange), turkey stuffing cranberry hoagie, Chipotle Chicken Panini and their italian sodas. First and foremost out of anything there you need to get the rolls, more importantly the raspberry cream cheese ones. Any other fruit one will do because those rolls are lit! There's also blueberry, orange and The cinnamon rolls or the cinna pull-aparts are flame too. They will add an extra 1000 calories to your day because they are more addicting than crack! Get there in the morning that will be when it's most fresh. That being said the sandwiches were fancy. I like my turkey bacon avocado is a cold sandwich. It wasn't the best probably my fault. I also tried another turkey one but wasn't impressed. They still get the five stars because ROLLS. Seriously worth but be careful they run out rather quick like by 3PM will be out of most of them. Probably the worst customer service I have experienced in a long time. It took over 5 mins for someone to even acknowledge we were there. From there it just got worse. None of pastries were labeled with the different flavors so when we asked for something specific we were met with sarcasm and a condescending attitude. Ok this review is because I came and was so disappointed, I used to loooove Shirley's I ate here every day when I was at BYU, I came for the Daily special and always a bad a great experience. I graduated last spring and just came back today and they have changed the price of the daily special from $5 to $7.49. That was disappointing but I was ok with it, but the sandwich was NOT GOOD!! They used to serve it on big thick yummy French bread slices and apparently now "french bread" means regular white (and might I add dry) sandwich bread. Also the turkey was dry too. Sometimes change is good but at Shirley's all the changes that have been made in a year are bad bad bad!! Bring back Your good food and good prices! Used to like this place for their desserts, but it's not worth it when the service is just slow. Last time I went they got the order wrong (didn't know this till I got home) and then had to drive back, get my order again, get it wrong, and come back. On top of that, there was a hair in my soup. They gave me a larger order of my soup free of charge, but didn't even offer just to refund me. Staff is nice, but not really trained to know what to do when they get it wrong. It's cute and fun inside and while I like their rolls, there are a lot of bakeries in town that offer A LOT better of service with just as good food. read more
