The food was meh. I ordered the waffle and it was really dry and bland with a weird texture. The bacon was tiny and really limp. Overall unimpressed. But by far the worst part was our server. Who, for reasons I don't understand, felt the need to try and explain to me how eggs are cooked. It started with me ordering the waffle and being curious about what it meant by "malted". I assumed malted powder, but I wanted to be certain. It was just curiosity. So I asked what the malted waffle was, and she goes, "It's a waffle." Oh yes, thank you for that very informative and supremely helpful information. I understand everything now. Please insert my eyeroll here. Anyway she finally told me there was malt powder in the batter (thank you, took you long enough) and after I ordered the waffle since it came with eggs she asked me how I wanted them. To which I replied, "over easy, yolk broken" and that apparently was too much for her to process. She asked me if I meant over hard, to which I affirmed a negative. I repeated myself, "No, I want over easy, yolk broken." She then tried to explain to me how eggs are cooked tell me there are only three ways to make eggs, which I nearly started laughing at. I cook, so I was highly amused. She then ended with, "Well what do I tell the kitchen!?" I nearly told her, "Try 'over easy, yolk broken' maybe?" but I refuse to be *that* customer. So I instead ordered bacon since that was something simple enough for her to grasp. I was the late comer to the group I was with, and it turned out that she'd been rude, short, and curt with everyone else as well. So I felt slightly mollified that it wasn't just me, but wow. This is the perfect place for comfort food especially breakfast food. Thankfully, I ordered the gravy sauce on the side because they put a lot of it and it's on the saltier side. I had the chicken fried steak based on the reviews and it was no disappointment! I'm so glad I ordered this dish. However, prepare yourself for a heavy meal. I honestly could have split the dish with someone because it comes with hashbrowns, 2 eggs, and 2 dollar cakes (regular sized pancakes) or toast. The hashbrowns however had no flavor and were super soggy. My significant other ordered the fried chicken sandwich and the biscuit was amazing! It was fluffy, crunchy on the outside, and cooked perfectly. My boyfriend's hashbrowns were disappointing as well. The service was great all very friendly staff. But, my boyfriend's dish takes longer to cook and I wish they had told us that ahead of time because we waited more than 30 minutes for our food with no one checking in on us. Our server made up for it by giving us a discount which was a great way to compensate for that. read more

I would not recommend Shirley's diner because of the service. My father found a long black hair in his pancake hoping it was mine but it was cooked into the pancake. The reasoning for this must have been that they're employees had their hair tied up and only covered with a baseball cap. Our server coming with our food was going too fast and dropped my toast. After this incident she didn't come back with more so, when the manager ran past our table I asked if I was going to get my bread. However he did come by but just like the server he was going very fast, too fast and set it down and walked off and he didn't even apologize. The server only gave us one refill on are drinks and when she asked how we were doing indicating that she was asking did we need anything and, as she was asking she was already walking off. This restaurant is very understaffed, the food is good but I don't think I would go there again. read more

I did a review about 18 months ago. Not much has changed as far as my opinion. This place is still one of the best places in Omaha for comfort food. Breakfasts are outstanding. They no longer have the hash brown stack on the menu, but if you ask for it, they will make it. The Tuesday meatloaf special is worth every penny. I had a triple cheese burger there last week and it was delicious. It was also huge, a double burger with bacon and all the usual trimmings. The onion rings are great and they give you enough that you could make a meal out of just them. The owners are wonderful people and are always welcoming. I eat there are least twice a week and sometimes more. I never get tired of their food. The chicken fried steak is their signature dish and it is fabulous. You will never have a bad meal there. The number of people they feed is a testament to how good the place is. Their help is always wonderful and give great service with a smile. read more

This is our first (and LAST) visit to Shirley's Diner. 1. They need experienced servers. Our young waitress was nice, but delivered our water glasses by the tops (where you drink from--gross!), never did bring our side dishes (hash browns, toast) that came with our breakfast items we ordered, and we had to flag her down and ask for everything we needed several times (napkins, refills). The toast and hash browns that were supposed to come with our meal never did arrive. The young boy bussing the tables did an awful job sloshing the rag around, and our table was not clean when we sat down. Our coffee cup and soda glass were delivered to our table with sticky fingers from syrup, and the Sprite was mistakenly filled with soda water the first time around. For the table next to us, the busser left spilled water on the seats and the floor for future guests. It took him 15 minutes to bus the table from the guest that left previously, as he clearly had never been taught how to wipe a table and didn't have a bussing tub to remove dirty dishes so he made several trips to the kitchen with 2-3 items in his hands each time. Service was SO SLOW and there was a 40 min. wait when we arrived. Hiring more experienced servers would create a much better customer experience and eliminate the long wait times. 2. The food did not come out as ordered. I ordered an omelet but substituted the hamburger for bacon. I received a greasy hamburger omelet with bacon on the side. Nobody checked on us to see if my order was correct. My side of pancakes did not arrive at all and I could not flag anyone down, so I had to go to the counter to ask for them. When I explained that my meal was not correct, they did offer to make me another one, but by then my family was done eating so it was too late to eat. They did take the omelet off of our bill, but I hated wasting my Sunday morning brunch at this place since I left hungry and grossed out. 3. The food we did receive was sub-par. My husband's biscuit gravy was tasteless and bland. My son's club sandwich was just fair. There is no reason for us to return for Shirley's as the food was just okay and the service was terrible. I'm disappointed. I had hoped for better for Shirley's with their beautiful new location. read more

On a god note...the food was pretty good. We had ordered salads. We waited and waited and here comes our food. We never got our salads. The waitress comes over and I said something about our not getting our salads. She said she got busy and forgot. I was livid. We ate our dinner and I went and talked to the manager and the manager didn't seem to care. The waitress said she would take the salads off our bill like she was doing us a favor. I have yet to have anything bad here. They have my (and my wife's) favorite cheese frenchee ever, a really good hot beef, the best chicken and waffles I've had, and really good chicken fried steak/chicken. I'm not big on breakfast, but my wife loves everything she gets here. We love on the opposite side of Omaha, but try to get up here as often as we can. read more

I just ate here and was sadly unimpressed. Our omelettes were overloaded with onions, even the waitress commented, but still was dine to give them to us. The biscuits were dry and my hash browns were literally sitting in a pool of grease. I couldn't eat them. My toast was so hard I had to break most off to find a piece I can eat. The pancake was burnt on the bottom as well. Also we ordered wheat toast with mine and pancakes with my husbands and when I told the waitress that we received two orders of white toast instead she replied with "well that looks like wheat toast to me" I promise I was in no way rude when I brought this to her attn, so was very confused by the reply? Absolutely the very best chicken fried steak in the city of Omaha! It is always consistently good. The Spanish omelette is another favorite of mine. The burgers are yummy too. Service is great too! You can't go wrong dining at Shirley's. read more

It would be a 5 if not for the service. We were seated and waited. And waited. Then a hostess came by for our drink order. She did not know if the kids meals came with a drink or not. I asked her to check and then ordered a water for my child in the meantime. She came back with a big water (for a toddler) and then saw her error and asked if I'd like a kids cup for water. Did not let me know if milk came with a kids meal. However, she was polite, just uniformed. Then we finally got a waitress. A manager had to ask the hostess to tell the waitress to help us. Then the waitress took our order and asked what kind of eggs my husband and I would like with or meals. I thought only one of the orders came with eggs, but whatever. I'm kind of preoccupied when dining with children. (And it's not my decision to eat out at a sit down restaurant with children...it was at the request of grandparents who we were with.) I originally ordered my son a #2 but after seeing someone with chocolate chip pancakes, I asked the waitress to "scratch the #2 and give him an order of the chocolate chip pancakes." When our food finally came, there was the #2 and I asked her who it was for. I said I asked her to take that off and do the pancakes. Well, she flipped out and said that is not what I said and that she didn't know why I would order two meals for my son (as there were still pancakes coming). I said I don't know why either, which is WHY I DIDN'T DO THAT. It was all very confusing and in between all that I realized neither myself or my husband got the eggs we ordered. I didn't bother saying anything because I would've gotten my head ripped off at this point and I didn't want to make EVEN MORE of a scene with grandparents there. Whatever happened to, "I'm sorry there was a misunderstanding and I'll get that worked out for you"? If I wasn't there with extended family, the manager would've gotten an earful. And the waitress was lucky grandpa was paying and probably left a decent tip. As for the food, it was awesome as everyone else stated. If we go back (and I definitely will be asked to be seated elsewhere if the same waitress is working) I'd like to try the onion rings. The chicken fried steak was delicious, as was the omelette I had (although so savory I couldn't finish it) and he hash browns spot on. Reminded me of Waffle House hash browns (sans cheese) but better, if that's possible. The decor was great and of course the grandparents loved the nostalgia. read more

Shirley's is a family-friendly classic diner hidden in Millard. The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is comfortable and casual. I have tried a number of their breakfast items, and everything I have tried is good. The food can take a little while to come out, but it always seems fresh and is cooked well. They have excellent hash browns, pancakes, French toast, and chicken fried steak. The food is very filling, and the prices are very reasonable. Each time that my husband and I have gone there we have both ordered breakfast meals and coffee and spent around $25 after tip and taxes. This is definitely a place worth going for breakfast. If you do go on a Sunday, go early enough to beat the church crowd, because it can get really crowded. There are only a couple of little things that could be improved upon. First, they usually have daily specials at Shirley's, but the servers have never told us about them. Second, they need to get little pitchers for their maple syrup. They keep their syrup in the middle of the table in a bottle with a cap and a handle. The bottles are a sticky mess, and if you are eating a meal that needs syrup, your hands become messy as well. Overall, though, this is a great diner. read more

Shirley's Diner is the hidden gem in Omaha. The décor is more than décor. It is ambiance! I always hope for a different booth so I can check out more. I've never had a wait staff be anything less than totally charming and accommodating. It becomes somewhat akin to visiting with an old friend. In spite of how busy they are, the staff always has time to answer questions. As far as the food goes; FABULOUS! I'd say it was "down home" but no one at my home could prepare meals like this. While I've never had a dish I didn't devour, I will say the fish and chips I had recently were outstanding. So often it is too greasy, this wasn't. Had breakfast at the new location...nice and roomy. Food was awful! Husband and I both had biscuits and gravy. Gravy tasted like glue! Both of us only could eat one,biscuits were like a 1/2 loaf of bread cut in half, very heavy! My husband said the hash browns were good, but Ralston Keno are far better. We even had to fix our table, taking our napkins and folding them to put under the leg (we were not the only ones that did that this morning). The best thing about this morning was the staff, our server was very sweet young lady and as we left the staff told "Thank You" and have a good day! Ive been here many times. Normally it's decent diner food. Today was the worst. The Rubin/Rachel I got was a sloppy wet mess that I could only eat half of. Within 30 min I was running for the bathroom. My girlfriend got nasty old mashed potatoes, since they were pretty busy you would think they would have had fresher food @ noon on a Sunday. My girlfriend and I used to come here frequently and really enjoyed the breakfast food and a couple of the dinner items. We were regulars and recognized by the staff. However, the last 4 times we have come the service has been absolutely terrible. You wait at least 15 to 20 minutes before you even are able to put your drink order in. Numerous times people come in up to 20 minutes after you and are able to order their food before you. The food is good, but it's not good enough to deal with the kind of neglect you receive here. They really need to do some training here on customer service and being attentive. If I was a manager here, I would be all over these servers for not doing their jobs. Instead, you see no accountability for people standing around doing nothing while ignoring their tables. We gave it a lot of chances after it started going downhill and we are definitely done and have not been back here in at least 5 months. read more

I've been eating at Shirley's Diner for over a decade now. For at least the last year they have been wildly inconsistent with the quality of their food and the accuracy of the order. This has happened enough over the last year I am finally done with Shirley's Diner, which is too bad. When the order is right and the quality is there it's an enjoyable meal. I am just tired of getting home with my food and something being wrong. For example order a cheeseburger and get home and there is no cheese on it. They certainly aren't forgetting to charge you for the cheese they didnt put on. This is one example but it's almost always something like that. The one time I called to complain the manager apologized and offered to send out a gift card. Gave him my address and of course he never sent the card. Which is really consistent with their inconsistency and taking their customers for granted. So what once use to be a very good place to eat is now hit or miss. As far as my family goes, we will no longer eat here. read more
