The hummus here will change your life. And you can get it to go and eat it all week which makes it even better. I love the family owned business aspect of this place. Junade, one of the sons that works here is so friendly and we came back to eat after grabbing some hummus just because he was so polite. SO GLAD WE DID. The food here is cheaper than a lot of the other gyro places we've tried, and it's just as good. This is also one of the few places in Denver that actually has the big things of lamb and chicken that they shave. All that being said, it is on the corner of Grant and Colfax, so don't expect this to be the best romantic date night atmosphere. But, it's a great little stop. My boyfriend talked this place up big time because I have long stood by my assertion that there's no good middle eastern food in Denver, and he wanted to prove me wrong. Unfortunately, this place didn't even come close to living up to expectations. It was just okay, and way, way, waaaaay too expensive. I ordered a grilled chicken plate. The salad came out first. The greens weren't particularly fresh...you know when you have to pick the soggy bits out of a bag of greens? Yeah, lots of soggy bits. Mealy tomato. That weird, brain looking part from the pepper. No good. The hummus was good. I'm picky about hummus and theirs made the cut. Their pita is store bought, but slightly less cardboard-like than most of what you find in the states. When my meal came, it was literally a plate full of rice and a chicken breast. It wasn't bad...it was just very mediocre. I will say without hesitation that I could make it better. The chicken was kinda difficult to power through. Good flavor, but dry. The server was nice, but the service was a bit slow. The worst part was the price. $19 for my lunch and a Diet Coke. There now should be no review for this place at all! I do water fasting for the days sometimes eating once a day? What does this have to do with this review? It was the first place I ate all day on Friday and I was purposely food poisoned. I suffered all that night staying up most of the night excessively. I am so mad at this place! I had eaten there for years no incidents at all. But since the attitude has changed since the father left. And the sons have taken over especially the cook, it is a bad feeling in that place. The hummus is out of this world! Coming from a person who doesn't really fancy hummus and now jumping on the hummus bandwagon, that means a lot. We ordered the chicken hummus and the lamb kebab. Both were splendidly sumptuous. The hummus was so smooth and the bread so soft and warm that even without the chicken, it would have been great. The rice on the lamb kebab was so light ! The salads and condiments were great additions to the entree. This place is a gem, and I'll be coming back whenever I crave for Mediterranean food. read more

I live about five blocks from Shish-Kabab Grill, so I've been in for a meal quite a few times. This afternoon, I called over to order a gyro for pick-up. After placing the order, the man who answered asked for my name, and said "thanks." No total, no time estimate. I asked how long it would be, and he replied "um, twenty minutes?" I headed over to be there a couple minutes ahead of time, and the gyro was ready. Boy, was I looking forward to this. In my first few experiences, these really were the best gyros in town - packed full of tasty, tender meat, with enough lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sauce to make the perfect meal. Things seemed a bit off the last time I was there, but I chalked it up to a rough day. Anyway, I got it home and dug in. Sigh. The meat is still incredibly plentiful, and definitely tender, but seems to have been drowned in salt. Some pieces were burnt. There were almost no onions or tomatoes, and the itzatziki was just about non-existent. The onion rings were definitely frozen food, which was a let down because they used to be outstanding. Previous reviewers have noted that the staff isn't exactly friendly, and this is pretty true. They're never downright rude, but its certainly not a warm atmosphere. For this reason, picking up the food has always worked well for me. I hope my last couple times there have been flukes, because I've enjoyed Shish-Kabob Grill's food for years now. For $8 you get pita bread stuffed to its bursting point with that delicious lamb-beef gyro meat. The onions, tomatoes and lettuce always look and taste fresh, and you get just the right amount of tzatziki sauce. You also get your choice of fries or onion rings. The service is a little lacking since it never seems to have but one or two people working at a time. I adore their hummus. And I'm a bit of a hummus snob. But they make it the way I want it... very creamy. Their falafel is pretty good, and I like their rice just fine too. The garlic dip, though good, gives me heartburn. Too much garlic for me. It's a rather unassuming spot on one of my favorite streets in the nation, Colfax Avenue. It is old school and family run, which adds to the ambiance as you step in. Whether you're in the mood for a gyro or a shawarma, this place does a pretty good job of both. You can order at the counter or sit down for table service. The gyro is a good sized pita, stuffed with juicy lamb, tomatoes, onions, and the best part... tzatziki sauce! Duh! Both the meat in the gyro or the chicken shawarma sandwiches is JAM PACKED, and almost enough to make two meals out if it. But for me, I eat the whole damn thing because it's super tasty and flavorful. I don't think you can go wrong with ordering a side of stuffed grape leaves (dolmas), and this place delivers. Just enough oil to soak up the tenderness and aroma of the grape leaves, and the filling (rice and spices) is super light to the palate, setting you up for more Med flavors. I have always had excellent service here, and everyone is super friendly. Like I said before, it is family run and you can tell that this family puts a ton of pride into their restaurant and culture. I love and and regret coming here. I lobe because the experience was 5 star but regret because now I'm going to be an addict! We ordered the Kebah (pretty much falafels but with stewed beef in the inside) for the appetizer. It was fresh, hot, and on point! So despite the fact that this place is literally Called the shish kebab grill, I did not order a shish kebab. But once I realized the owners were Syrians, I thought I would sort of put together a meze plate of my favorites - hummus, kibbe, and fule mouddammas (a fava bean dish usually eaten as breakfast). Everything was tasty, though the dip was too rich in tahini for me ( I like more lemon). Service was quick and friendly, and prices, although sort of high, get you a lot of food for the buck. I'll be straight up, I'm writing this review solely based on the rice because it is THAT GOOD. I ordered the chicken schewerma sandwich--spiced "rotisserie" chicken in a pita with lettuce, tomato, and a garlic sauce. It's normally served with your choice of fries, onion rings, or a garden salad but I paid an extra half dollar and got the most delicious rice I've ever had (the sandwich itself was good, not great). It's spiced with something citrusy, as well as something smokey--maybe paprika? My favorite part of Mediterranean food is that I can rarely decipher all of the ingredients used and it's like a challenge to keep eating more. I adore this place and try to support it as much as I can. Their vegi combo platter is honestly the best I've ever found over the past 10 years of trying a lot of the Mediterranean spots in or around Denver. Thank you, Omar, for making me want to become obese. It's your menu, my friend, and the home cooking. To those out there not named Omar...this is the best gyro in Denver, in my opinion. That said, I hardly ever order it. Why? Because the rest of the menu is fantastic, too. Why do I think the gyro is better here? Several reasons, but first and foremost, the meat. It's not that dried out, thinly sliced stuff you get pretty much anywhere else. Here, it's thicker, juicier, and about the size of my pinky. Not YOUR pinky, MY pinky, and that's a big pinky. The other main distractions from the Gyros are: Chicken Shawarma (again, juicy and well seasoned). The sandwich is HUGE. One of the best deals in Denver. The shish kabob is heaven on a stick, perfectly roasted and seasoned meats, onions, peppers. This description doesn't do it justice, but I am at a loss for words here. I could go on and on. This is one of those menus where you don't know where to start or end. I refuse to get a gyro anywhere else because I know I will be disappointed. Omar has ruined me for all others. I hate to say it but, this place is everything I've heard and more. I kept smelling this delicious food in the halls at work during lunch because so many people have been going there. Tonight, I told my husband that we had to have it. We called in a pick up order and it was quick and easy. The food was ready in about 20 minutes and was hot and fresh. I got the Hummus Bil-Gyro plate and my husband got the Gyro plate. Both were delicious. The salad was crisp, the meat was perfectly seasoned. The hummus was probably some of the best I've had. Do not go to a Middle Eastern restaurant and expect the fries to be good. They probably won't be, because fries are just an American expectation to be served next to any kind of sandwich and the fries here are clearly straight from the freezer. You're better off sticking to the Middle Eastern food. Like the hummus, which is the best I've ever had and that includes my Middle Eastern friend's versions (sorry Behnaz). It's magically creamy and rich, like eating liquid velvet. The sandwiches are all excellent. The meats are perfectly cooked, tender, and seasoned well. They are also generously portioned, literally falling out with meat and veggies. And the falafels are simply amazing. They are so moist and flavorful. Wonderful little chickpea pockets similar to an excellent hush puppy. Best of all, Shish Kabob is an authentic family restaurant. The parents own the place and the kids do most of the waiting. Yeah, that sometime means it's not the best of service, but I've never had any major problems here. The kids are all really nice and I've had great conversations about things like comic books and Barack Obama with the youngest, a bright-eyed youngster with an enthusiastic zeal for life. So if you want authentic and delicious Middle Eastern food, don't skip Shish Kabob Grill, but do skip the fries. read more

Stainless steel kitchen is shiny, ceiling is different from most middle Eastern spots, it is clean, nothing hanging from it. I was a little hesitant about this place as I came in. The atmosphere felt creepy for some reason. I sat down with my friends and was promptly welcomed by a friendly waiter. Because I was not familiar with the menu, I ordered the first thing that I recognized: the lentil soup simmered with cumin and parsley. After browsing the menu for a few more minutes I blindly decided on the chicken shawerma sandwich. I had no idea of what was to come... The soup had several depths of flavor to it. Probably one of the best lentil soups I have ever had. A few minutes later, my chicken shawerma sandwich arrived. Oh my...the flavor of the chicken was amazing. The Eastern spices seasonings really did their job. The sandwich came with lettuce, tomato, fresh parsley, a light garlic sauce, and was served on grilled pita bread (the smokiness of the grill comes through very nicely). All those simple flavors married together to form one delicious sandwich! This was one of the instances when ordering something entirely foreign to my palate truly paid off. DO NOT SUPPORT THE SHISH KABOB GRILL First of all, let me say that this is not a review of their food which has generally been good the times I have eaten here. However I will not be returning and this is why... After reading through the reviews for this place I saw a disturbingly repetitive theme: food good, service and attitude bad! I just got back from lunch there and was unfortunate enough to witness some of the same problems that others have observed, and as a result I won't be going back. I was finishing up my chicken schwarma sandwich when I heard the cook behind the counter start to get very agitated. Over the next few minutes I heard her repeatedly call one of the servers "stupid" and nearly shout that she was "working with stupid people." It appeared to be a problem with an order, but as a patron of any establishment, I am not going to spend my money in a place where any employee is berated so publicly and aggressively. As I paid and prepared to leave I told the cashier that I would not be returning and explained why. He tried to explain it away as a "recurring problem" and a result of the "pressures of working back there." I'm not buying it, literally. Anyone who has worked in food service knows that mistakes happen and there are much more constructive (and private) ways of addressing these issues besides publicly humiliating an employee. I read several reviews for this place that complained of a general culture of bad tempers and poor service and it appears to be pervasive from the top down. If this server gets fired in a fit of misdirected anger about my parting comments, I can only think that he will be better for it. I was recommended to this place because it's close to my work and tried it out finally. I ordered the falafel sandwich which is what I typically get at a mediterranean place because it's my favorite and fairly basic so if you mess it up, that's not a great sign. I have to say I wasn't all that impressed with it today. The pita was warm and seemed relatively fresh, the falafel themselves were pretty big so having only three on the sandwich was plenty. But honestly, it was just ok. The one thing that this place does absolutely get right is the hummus! It's the creamiest, most smooth hummus I've ever had! I was told that they shell all of the chickpeas and that's what makes it so creamy. It's a definite must try there! One of my only regrets about moving from my old 'hood at 14th and Penn is that Shish Kabob isn't just down the street from me anymore. Okay, now they are only 10 more blocks away, but for some reason that's just outside of my I'm-starving-I-need-food-immediately range. So, I don't get there as often as I used to. To be honest, I've driven past this place about 6 times in the last few months fully intending to stop for some of those delicious grape leaves and hummus, but parking is hellacious....so, usually I just drive by with a sad look on my face, and end up coming home and digging around in my fridge, pretending that I'm eating something from Shish Kabob.
