I was excited to try Shiver's because of the strong reviews. As previous reviewers said, go with the baby back ribs because they're the most tender and flavorful. I got the two meat combo (pork spareribs and baby back ribs), green beans and BBQ beans. The pork spare ribs were tough and not seasoned enough. The baby back ribs were flavorful and much more tender. The green beans were canned and could have been skipped. I would give this a 5/10 or 3/5. I may try it again but generally speaking this is overrated. Just got to Apocalypse BBQ and call it a day. read more

This place is worth a try if you're visiting the Homestead area. It's one of the best BBQ places at which we've eaten in a long time. In short, it's southern BBQ at its finest. Prominently located on US 1, it is not hard to find. It's brightly lit up at night and the storefront screams to you upon entry that you're about to get a wonderful downhome meal better than your mother used to make (sorry, Mom!). Inside there's long benches arranged in parallel running the length of the interior. It's meant to give the feeling that you're in a picnic pavilion. It's possible at the busiest times that you could be a little cozy with your neighboring party. But we were there at a time where it was only moderately busy and we never had the feeling of being on top of those next to us. We were seated right away and our server attended to us without delay. She clearly was experienced and very good at her craft. She did a great job throughout our stay. The menu featured a lot of Southern favorites making it hard to choose. One thing we knew we wanted to try was the fried corn on the cob and it turned out to be a highlight. It was made to perfection and tasted as good as it sounds. It's a great choice as a starter. For her main, my wife decided to try the Burnt End Sandwich, which she enjoyed immensely. I had a taste and thought it was exceptional. Another highlight for this place is the fabulous array of sides. She chose the Cole Slaw and Sweet Potato Soufflé. The cole slaw was good but the soufflé was great. I had the BBQ Chicken Sandwich with Cornbread Soufflé and Baked Beans. The baked beans were good, the sandwich was excellent, but the soufflé was special. The combination of tastes made this meal perhaps the best one of our one-week trip to Florida. It is not often when I have very good meat for my meal that I say the sides were the highlight...but these soufflés were simply that good. Something else to highlight was value. We had just water to drink so our bill with food, tax and tip was under $50 USD. At less than $25 each with leftovers to take home for another small meal or snack, I was quite happy with the value. Food is more like 4 stars. Service at to go is lacking. Plus a missing item. We ordered takeout from here yesterday. We had to drive 30 minutes to get here but he said it was worth the drive. By right, the restaurant should include what he paid for without him double checking. Other annoying thing is I wanted medium buffalo sauce. I told the gal on the phone. So they include 7 BBQ sauces. I happened to notice this because they were in a little bag. So I went back and asked for the buffalo sauce. The gal made me wait. A few minutes. Then she is just standing there looking at me. I asked for the sauces again. She told me it is $2. I did not bring money in. I did not want to go back to the car again which was parked a little far. They included all the wrong sauces. Haven't been here in a long time and now i remember why... I got the rib trio.. Beef back ribs had almost zero meat plenty of membrane tho smh.. My spare ribs were dried out beyond belief and my baby backs were tender although cold... This was a Sat around 1:30 lunch time and they were packed.. My wife ordered the half baby backs and burnt end combo... she asked for no sauce on the burnt ends or ribs and that whole order needed to be redone because the kitchen didn't follow the instructions so we didn't get to eat together.. If you're looking for fantastic BBQ, shivers is the spot. I've tried a few BBQ places and so far none measure up.

Before heading north from the Keys, I had a plan in place which included getting a taste of bbq from Shiver's - I love these one off nostalgic bbq joints, there's a reason these types of restaurants remain open for decades and I knew they wouldn't disappoint. We arrived just after they opened and before the lunch rush, this rustic looking restaurant just has the look that had me licking my chops. After grabbing a seat at one of the giant picnic tables our friendly server Kat arrived within a few minutes with menus in hand and a big smile. Our extra large glasses of Sweet Iced Tea and a Mountain Dew arrived moments after she dropped off the menus and answered any questions we had - my eyes immediately were drawn to the beef ribs and everything else became a blur, we usually share everything so a brisket sandwich seemed a good second choice especially with a request for a high fatty ratio along with fries, coleslaw and black-eyes peas. The restaurant began to fill as the noon hour approached so I was thankful for our impeccable timing knowing my food had already started to be plated along side the large amount of takeout orders. Our over-filled plates arrived and let me say they were both a thing of beauty - impressive portions and everything looked delicious and of course my first bite was the beef ribs which I had been told when placing my order they almost always sell out after my first bite I knew why. All the meats were succulent and tender and so delicious I knew it would be impossible to eat all of this food so I focused on the beef ribs this was a meal in itself and boxing up any leftovers wouldn't be an option since our plans was having us out for most of the day. Since Homestead is so far south for us and they're not local, fired up the trusty Yelp! machine and came across Shiver's. We unanimously decided to visit in, of all things a heavy winter rain storm. Parking lot is a little sparse but we likely made our own parking spot. The wait was considerable for a Sunday afternoon but you can't leave because of that delicious smoky smell! Once inside, you're greeted with picnic table seating and friendly servers. From here, go wild. You can do no wrong. Pick anything to eat and it bound to be delicious. Now mind you, when I go for barbecue I look specifically for brisket and beef ribs. Instead, we had chicken and baby back ribs. OK these were wonderful. Definitely the best baby back ribs I've had in South Florida. The problem is I'm just not a baby back rib guy. I truly did enjoy the sides which I chose, which were brussels sprouts and coleslaw. The beans looked wonderful as well. As a first visit, I did not get to try any of the others. I truly do want to try the banana pudding because I love banana pudding. The server gave me extra brisket which was moister. I would definitely come back when I'm in the neighborhood. I would order the burnt tips next time.
